This is the lucky last composition tips video for my 5 favourite prime focal lengths that I use for portrait photography - I’ve made one for 24mm, 35mm, 85mm and 135mm! I have some new ideas I’m working on too, but what do you wanna see next? 🤗
A large number of people have CROP sensor cameras,it would be really great if you share your knowledge on how to use prime lenses on them to get nearly the FULL frame effect 🤗
1. Use motion in shooting 2. Shoot at angle 3. Shoot at wide aperture 4. Isolate subject from background using lightning on the subject 5. Make subject stands out by different orientation (portrait and landscape)
This is the most educational RUclipsr of photography. I’m starting to get into photography as a hobby. This is the type of informative video for all people of all ages trying photography as a hobby. Photography is about visuals not words. The videos that I have seen from Julia are visuals that helped me understand photography. Keep up the great work!
Watching this video to review up... A few years ago this was the video that helped me to decide to go with the RF 50mm 1.2 L instead of the 85mm 1.2 L. I really like to shoot portrait and landscape orientation. It was frustrating using the combo 35/85 for sessions because of this, but also I like to move around and keep shooting, so having 1 lens really does make this an easy, ideal setup. Thanks :)
As someone who practices portrait photography (my main is street) this is really such a helpful video! I mostly shoot Fuji X cameras with 56mm 1.4 (about 85mm full frame equiv) and 18-55mm (27-82mm equiv) and sometimes I do find myself wanting that middle ground so I am planning to buy a 35mm F2 from fuji (50mm equiv) so it's not that tight while it's not that wide also. Thank you for this, Cheers!
Really appreciated the photo markups showing why you chose certain positions because of the light. All the photos were great. Will keep the 50mm in my bag just for occasions like these.. Appreciate all your hard work.
I have the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM II on my 90D & this video is super helpful and informative for my needs. I apprecaite the time and effort you put into not only this video, but all your videos and photography. Thank you 😀
Hi Julia! My fave shot is the one at 5:55 into the video where the model is leaning over. I enjoyed the tips, I don't really shoot in residential areas here in Chicago, but I may try to get something similar.
Beautiful! Do you have a tutorial on how you get your client's skin to have that glow? Sometimes when I use presets, the glow gets taken out and tends to look more film like which is good but I still want to see the glow.
Thank you! Yes I have 2 tutorials, I sometimes do frequency separation retouching in Photoshop so you can use the search function in my channel to find that. And recently I've been using Luminar AI more as well as it's faster, it has an easy slider that you can use to soften skin and it has a really similar look to frequency separation. I use that slider in all my Luminar AI tutorials so you can check any of those out :) Oh and also I use a makeup artist at my shoots as well, sometimes the best way to get that glow is just straight out of camera. Lidija usually uses highlight on our models, so you can always ask your model to bring some highlight to pop on her cheekbones for that look! I hope that helps!
Hey Julia, I’m new to the Sony system & have the A7R III with 85mm GM & 35mm GM. How do you have your camera setup? Would love to see a video of your settings! 🙏🏾
A misconception often heared is that people think that they actually get a 50mm „equivalent“ when using a 30-35mm on a crop sensor. The only thing they get is a 35mm image cropped to something the size of a 50mm. So basically the effect is the same as when cropping it afterwards. The problem is it’s still a 35mm. You actually don’t get the looks bokeh or lens characteristics
Thanks for all the Tips! I realy like this video, because i am only using a 50mm, and im still starting. Trying to use every photography tips that i can use. Your video is a realy big help! Subs up
Wow! Comencé a ver su canal y tiene excelentes tips! Le felicito siga así! I started to watch your channel and you have very good tips! I really enjoy watch your videos! Congrats and keep going in that way! 🤗
love this video! especially since I have a photoshoot with a 50mm on saturday! lol would love to see you try a leica one day and see how you use manual focus\ compared to sony.
Another great video Julia 👏. The lines with which you present facts clearly are very, very helpful to me. Many thanks to the entire team for your wonderful work.
Hey Julia, I'm guessing your talking about full frame here. I have a crop so then it would be 35mm to be the same, correct? Also like watching ur videos not only for the photography stuff but just hearing and seeing the Aus nature/wildlife. I'm an Aussie but have been living overseas since mid 2000s. So I do miss the Aussie nature. So thanks for that also... ❤😁
Can you nudge Sony and tell them to hurry up with the update about the Imaging Edge app having touch to focus and tracking again? Haha. I got so excited in your A7IV video when you mentioned that. Is that a feature that will be in the A7IV it will the app just be able to work with pre-existing cameras that couldn't do it? I can't remember if it was a hardware limitation they removed. At least we can hope it'll be a normal thing going forward with newer cameras?
I love my 50 ❤ and that was my first full frame lens thanks to your videos p.s. can we get a 105 vs 135 comparison? Ideally only the two (or maybe the two plus an 85). 135 is my dream lens, but it's hard to find where I am, and the 105 is at least a bit cheaper. And I'm also not sure if I would ever get to use the 135 in weddings 😅 while I know the 105 is okay for that
Aw that's awesome to hear! I loved my 50 too, now that I have other lenses I don't use it AS much but gosh I loved it when it was my only lens haha. And yes!! I would love to make a comparison on that
@@juliatrotti thanks, I can't wait 😍 Sometimes it's a love-hate relationship (as my other lens is the 35, which I'm not fond of). But I think I'll still use it a lot when I get the 24 and 105 (or 135)
What type of focus point or setting do you use? I notice you don’t actually look through the viewfinder. How are you ensuring the focus point is on the subjects face? This is something I currently struggle with, while switching between horizontal and vertical shots.
@@sexysilversurfer But they're not all equal. I would only trust Sony and Canon. Other manufacturers may be behind. E.g. I'm on Fujifilm, and the face/eye autofocus always focuses on glasses and not the pupil. Depending on the system I would still do the old school style of focus recompose.
thank you so so much for your tips! I have a question though: ho did you record "what you were seeing in the camera while shooting"? Was it like broadcasting and then saved it? hdmi cable to something?
Thanks for the nice and enjoyable video. Currently, I'm really enjoy my new 50mm GM. Its versatility and creamy bokeh make me feel much happier taking portrait pictures_:)
I'm the exact opposite lol. 35 is the worst for me. Never wide enough, never tight enough. My 2 main lenses are 28 and 50. It's interesting how polarizing prime lenses are.

Definitely a 70-200 portrait session! ✌️
Your model really knew what she was doing. She rocked it!! 🤙🏻
Charlotte is an amazing model!!!!! I love her movement!!! She’s so creative and has great energy in all the shoots you did with her!!
Yesss I seriously love shooting with Charlotte, it's so fun!
1. Use motion in shooting
2. Shoot at angle
3. Shoot at wide aperture
4. Isolate subject from background using lightning on the subject
5. Make subject stands out by different orientation (portrait and landscape)
Thanks 😅
I love how straightforward her videos are. She even shows unedited which I highly appreciate.
I like that I'm able to see what the actual frame looks like in-camera at 50mm relative to your distance standing from her.
I literally just got a 50mm off eBay today, the timing of this video could not be better!
Weird so did I 😎😂😂

Fantastic advice and a great way to showcase how to do this in real time and not just a talking head. Looking forward to some more portraits now!

Leighton Meister is Photography Expert?
Some great tips here - the 50 (or 55mm on my Sony) is my go to lens and it just captures amazing contextual stories with that framing.
Thank you and I love the Zeiss 55 - it's a great lens!
Getting a 50mm was a revelation. Such an improvement for portraits. Enjoyed the video, many thanks indeed.
I love my 50 1.4 on my A73. Who needs more than that? It is my go to lens.

That's exactly what I did, get 50mm f1/4 right after shooting with kit lens for a while. It's super
I just ordered my first 50mm lens. Sigma 50mm 1.4 art adapted for my canon r6. I hope it's a good match. Can't wait to try it out!

is 35mm a suitable first prime lens for an apsc sensor camera? its around 56mm in full frame
Usually people quote lens recommendations in FF equivalents, so you're right in getting a 30ish for your aps-c system.
A misconception often heared is that people think that they actually get a 50mm „equivalent“ when using a 30-35mm on a crop sensor. In the next video, you will be the model 💙
Quick question why use 1/1000 shutter in stead of alittle lower since some of the shot did not have much movement?
A 50 is good if someone can only have one lens. I started serious photography over 60 years ago, and I used a 50 mm exclusively for about three years.
I really like your composition style Please do a 200mm lens next time. ❤️
