I have the same pom pom maker , but produced by another company. The instructions were so small I have not been able to read them. We ended up with millions of cut ends all over the place. I nearly threw them in the bin when it happened again at knitting group ! Not now you have done this video! Thanks , you have saved them from the bin. I do love my other pom pom maker though with the two arms! Make perfect pom poms that require little trimming & therefore less waste. Thank you!!

I have now made a few poms by various methods: wrapping around fingers, cardboard circular shapes and a commercial pom pom maker. The notches on the end of your product is a really nifty idea and, I like the notches along the arch of the maker as well.

Ive got different makes....but...... I went back to making them the way my Mum did, two circles of cardboard with a hole in the middle, wind the yarn through the hole and over the circle, when the hole in the middle is full, take your scissors and cut between them cutting the yarn, bring end of your yarn up round between the two bits of card and tie, cut off the yarn the length you want left, cut away your cardboard and your left with a lovely pompom. My gran did this method as well, she was born in 1900 so it’s been around a long time!

yarn is never strong enough to tie the pom pom tight enough. I lay a long strand or two of cotton perle thread (or embroidery thread) length-wise across the pompom maker and tuck them into the grooves. Then I wrap the yarn and tie up the bundle with the cotton strand. The cotton ends can then be used to sew the pom pom onto the top of the hat.

The "hair cut" was the step I missed when I first used these! Great advice!

Making pom poms is fun isn't it? How annoying to have a power cut at such a time! You made the most of things! Good for you!

I love watching your videos and learn so much from all of them. I did not know where I could ask you a question about the Gel Sticks V Gelatos. I wanted to have some Gelatos for Christmas but saw your video so got the gel sticks (Portfolio) instead. Now I need to know how to blend them with my finger...I have seen this done with the Gelatos and have tried with the gel sticks but it does not work. Do I have to use certain cardstock or do I need to Gesso my paper?? What am I doing wrong??? Sorry to have posted this here and it does not have anything to do with pompoms... Where do I go to ask more questions If I have more??? Keep up the videos, it is like having classes right at home....

This is fine Judy, I find a baby wipe wrapped around your finger is great for blending or a damp make-up wedge (dollar store) and you can keep one for each color family and resuse them:)

thefrugalcrafter . So does that mean the videos I have seen with just rubbing the finger across really does not work?? I thought I understood the Gelatos verses the gel sticks, but maybe I do not...Do you always have to use something wet or damp to blend the colors and do you have to use special cardstock??? Or paint with Gesso???
      Thanks for your help

I have watched at least three different videos now of using this thing and done it over and over and still end up with a handful of string. :(

+Kendra K it sounds like you are not getting tie down string laid across the pompom.

Thanks for the tutorial, however like another person said I found it a little difficult to watch as you had it upside down and I could not quite understand the first threading part. I agree with another person that perhaps a strong cotton will hold pom poms better as I find most of mine no matter how tight I pull the wool still seem to fall out when tugged a little. Frustrating.

Do you have trouble with the bits being too easy to pull out? I caught some in a ring and ruined my pom poms - I can't seem to tie them tight enough :-(

KeemaMUA I have had that happen but it is better with this pom pom maker, you just have to pull it really tight!

Sorry, I've watched your video multiple times, and each time my pom pom comes completely undone. I understand I'm cutting the wrong thread, but since I'm following your directions (and have had my husband and daughter try following your video, with their results also being an undone pom), it stands to reason the issue is with your directions. Since you know how to make one other ways, you are most likely (not on purpose) leaving out crucial information. Please remake your video from the POV of a novice. Perhaps marking which string/where you cut in an obvious manner. Perhaps not changing direction of the maker so often. Like you I can make poms another way (I use two toilet paper roll holders together), yet using this contraption I fail every time!!!

I'm sorry, but I stopped watching this after the first step because I found it hard to follow 'upside down'.
