I made 48 pom poms for my JV cheerleading squad back in 1975 and you would think I’d remember the technique forever lol! When a project called for pom poms, I searched YT and found a bunch of methods, but none come close to doing as good a job as this oldie but goody! Thanks for sharing and the trip down memory lane!

Just have to update this: So after watching this refresher video, I spent hours wrapping yarn around a giant 7” doughnut template for an enormous pom pom and manicuring it into a perfect sphere. I attached it to the hat I’d just completed and set it on the bathroom counter to brush out my hair. When I turned around, my new hat was on the floor between the enormous paws of my 150# Presa Canario (a type of Mastiff) and my pom pom was GONE! But not the thousands of tiny strands of yarn that it was made of! It was literally a yarn avalanche! Apparently dogs really really enjoy pom poms a lot too!

Thank you for teaching us how to make it, instead of just showing us! 🙌🏽
Ps- If you place a string in between the two layers of cardboard before you start wrapping, you eliminate the fiddling at the end to tie it all up. Enjoy!

I’m one of five sisters, we used to spend winter evenings when we were small knitting “bobble hats”.
This is exactly the method we used to make the bobbles or Pom Poms in the 1950’s.

I had no idea what a pompom was until watching this video. This is so cute. I might just try this one with the yarn we've had for decades.
I've been watching your videos ever since I got myself a sewing kit for my cloths a couple days ago. I saved your "Craft Basics" playlist. You have a very calming voice and pleasant style of teaching. I just wanted you to know that. Cheers!

I'm sorry to comment here but I had to thank you.
I've been trying for years to find marzipan pigs for new years and just couldn't. I figured I could make them, maybe, and stumbled across your video.
You definitely make it seem doable, but I'm also disabled and have chronic pain so I was really afraid to try. My son and I whipped out 4 respectably cute piggies just in time for the New Year.
So thank you! I posted them on Facebook and I've been getting friends and family commenting all day about how cute they are!
Posting the link in case any of them want to try. They are so fun and so cute.
And even my angry old body did it. Yay!

This is how I used to make them as a kid - except we didn't cut a gap - just two card circles
with hole in middle - thread wool using a needle. I cannot believe people actually spend money on buying a pom pom maker! Good for you - yours turn out great!

Thank you for that. Nice hearing an 'English' accent on RUclips for a change. I used to make PomPoms like this when I was a child. Though I didn't cut a slot, we would sew the yarn through the hole, and fill the hole up. (I think I like this way...)

    • @redtedart
      @redtedart  6 лет назад

Yes! Same!! Takes forever tot get the wool through!!! Maybe make the slot a little smaller than I did though!

That was brilliant.I was taught to make pom-poms using cardboard circles but we cut a hole in each. That meant you had to thread the wool through the hole using lengths at a time. This cutting a "keyhole"is so much easier. Also no waste compared to other methods .
