I remember in chapter 3, there is this dialog between Arthur and Beau (I think), they talked about an older Braithwaite sister who mysteriously disappeared from the portrait many years ago. It was suspected that she has gone mad. Perhaps, Penelope says it's her cousin to distance herself from the crazy lineage.
Or...she’s both. Ya know cause...incest.
No she really is her cousin, the crazy lady is Catherine braithwates daughter and Penelope is Catherine’s niece I’m pretty sure, so she really is her cousin.

I had a thought that Gertrude dies because after Dutch's gang burns the mansion down, and Catherine dies, there's no one left to bring her food.
Yes. She is dead on my game and I haven't shown signs of illness. I take huge chunks of time exploring and revisiting areas between each mission. Completionists and totally immersive I am.

i think its amazing how rockstar anticipated every single move from the players.....or anything you do, no matter what....there is a reaction or a cutscene or a different conversation.
Except for the players who wanted to save her. :P
Just as the guy below say. It's not that they predicted every wish and possible action of the player. They just thought about how to make some things more interactive and worked on it. But even so they didn't cover everything. And a lot of things were left lacking. People that play rdr2 often don't see this or don't accept it because the game already is so amazing and detailed, but sadly has faults in his own virtue.
There is no option of saving her, many houses are locked away with no players interaction even though they implemented a robbery mechanic for you to use, you can't interact with the lady in emerald ranch at all, not have any quest line related to her, you can't interact with the rap´st or the incest family in a defensive way the only option is to "let it happen" there are several other nuances in several other questlines that are left unfinished in the game or have no multiple interactions.
Point being, don't overhype games, they are all flawed in the end.
@@Nobody-su9km but that's only a few of the tons of flaws this game has. And for me the virtues in this game don't compensate the flaws, I played rdr1 and it was a lot better.

I think the fact that they not only locked her away but faced her outhouse towards the families property is just cruel. She can watch the family be a family, but can't do anything about it and also dies a horrible death. Lonely, and hungry. I wonder if them isolating her in the way they did + them inbreeding, caused her insanity. Poor girl. She couldn't help the way she turned out. Its her families fault.

They should’ve added a mission to save Gertrude, maybe they still could if they ever do a re-release or remake of the game in the future. Leaving Gertrude in that outhouse is actually a cruel thing for the developers to do. It pains the players to not be able to rescue this poor girl from her certain death. And the players have enough pain to go through with the tragic deaths of Arthur Morgan and many of his colleagues. Poor Gertrude! She could’ve been helped in time, if she had gotten a step-family who actually cared about her. I know her own family, the Braithwaite’s, never could, and I doubt any mental home of 1899 could’ve done better. If Gertrude had just gotten some love and patience, and eaten good food and slept in a comfortable bed, it would’ve helped comfort her in spite of her mental problems. I have a sister who’s had similar distressing circumstances from the day she was born, and I can tell you from personal experience that it works. She used to be impulsive and frequently got in trouble, but now is one of the sweetest persons that ever walked the face of the earth, and everyone who meets her can’t help but be encouraged by her love and her endurance despite severe difficulties.

Very interesting and sad, the insanity through incest is understandable and probably has historical precedence, I never knew that Penelope was bad, I remember trying to fight her cousins at the train station, both kept killing me so I just skipped it) and then I shot a few of the pursuers, thanks for doing these.
It's odd how the rest of the "world" is real life names (New York, Boston, etc) but the game world we are in is fictionalized (New Orleans = St. Denis, etc)
They locked her in the outhouse for saying 1 2 7 3 down to Rockefeller street, and now she's been cursed to utter random numbers for all of eternity.
Penelope doesn't steal the Braithwaite treasure. If you go north of Saint Denis in the swampy area next to the Lannaheche River directly west of Sisika Penitentiary, you'll find a lock box dug up with a letter to a Douglas Grey from Lucille Braithwaite about them giving the treasure away years ago.

What about bringing her back to the gang's camp? Has anyone tried that? I imagine if you took her to her family, they would just shoot the both of you. Although, if you took her to the burned out mansion, she might have interesting things to say upon seeing her grandmothers charred corpse.

Back in the first Course of True Love mission (I think), penelope actually mentions that Mrs Braithwaite has a secret daughter. It isn't hard to put two and two together here. By the time I stumbled across this it was no big mystery.
Rockstar has such a insane addiction in making games with details. Whoever thought Penelope would be rode to the secret outhouse. Damn, they even coded and got all script for every character in every possible situation, like they were truly living, not just game characters.

Somewhere in chapter 2/3 a mission I think with maybe Beau? I remember someone saying there was a rumour of the Braithwaite (older woman not sure of name) who had a “crazy” daughter no has seen for a long time.
I'm thinking she was partially cut content. The quest, if you can call it that, is called 'braithwaite secret' or something- yet you don't really reveal any secrets. You find out they have a girl in an outhouse... but that's not the REAL secret we would have found out.
I remain optimistic that they'll release a new game+ type expansion for single player that let's you start over with some sort of bonus perks, like all previously collected legendary creatures and cigarette cards or something, but will contain new content like additional side missions, new collectibles, new random encounters, and maybe Mexico.

I think everyone has it wrong a little. If you actually get a good look at her in the outhouse, she has a cleft lip. So she resembles the outcast character you find in that treehouse. Family was ashamed and afraid of her and locked her away. The man in the treehouse also has the same facial disfigurement and his self isolation has caused him to go crazy just like her.
I think she is more of an embarrassment to the family.

I saw a video showing that if you went to the outhouse with Penelope and then accept the bracelet after the mission, once they leave for Boston supposedly you can mail the bracelet back to her and then in the epilogue as John you can go to the post office and find a letter from Penelope to Arthur that says “delivered 5 years ago” in the letter she speaks of sending some people to rescue her cousin but if you go to the outhouse you will find the men she sent dead outside Gertrude’s outhouse as skeletons. one of them holding a cross over their chest and another set of remains next to it. gertrudes skeleton will be inside the outhouse.

First off the fact that Rockstar had to make these two families absolutely horrible with no redeeming qualities to make sure we side with the outlaws us interesting to me. Second, the storyline wad a little confusing to me. I feel like it would have made me sense for Penelope & Beau to be switched. Why is Penelope's family have such a problem with the movement when the head of the house is a woman. If Penelope was a Gray it would make more sense cause you didn't hear anything about the women in that family. Idk, that part of their story just confuses me.

I'm going to push back on that point about Penelope being as bad as her family for supposedly not helping her mentally, the reality is they're probably wasn't much Penelope could have done for a cousin one way or another, it's hard enough for her to get out, she would have had to find people willing to break her cousin out from the breath away property, and then Spirit her away to a sanatorium, all while the cousin is probably not cooperating.

What about the missing little girl from the poster outside of the Van Horn Saloon? Her family had money she was missing for 15+ years never to be found and returned home. Her luggage is at the Van Horn Fence but who's to say the Braithwaite family wasn't hurting for cash after the abolishment of slavery and kidnapped the child for a Ransom and doubled crossed the parents. Don't forget that Jack was kidnapped although unharmed.

Weird thing tho. Idk if there’s something wrong with my game. But I’m replaying the game for the 3rd time and I’m on the mission where Beau sends you to give Penelope a letter. I snuck on to the Braithwaite estate and found this outhouse and it’s empty.
