That said, there are different types of comedy performance, which means subjective preference plays a role in its appropriateness regardless of how funny the jokes are. A roast, or show with roasting in it, is always at someone's expense. You can't attend a show like that without asking the performer ahead of time not to target you, then argue the performer did the wrong thing, because hurting someone's feelings is *necessary* in a roast.

If you listen to the full podcast it makes sense. Josh was being “devil’s advocate” and trying to see what Will may have been thinking. Trying to think about why someone may do something like that. He wasn’t agreeing with it or arguing for it. Rogan cut him off just as much as he interrupted him. No big deal anyway, but yeah it definitely sounds confusing in the clip.
