This Japanese Fighter Plane Led the Attack on Pearl Harbor

- The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was spearheaded by one of the most dominant fighter planes in the Pacific: the ultra-light, extremely maneuverable Mitsubishi A6M "Zero."
From the Series: Air Warriors: Zero bit.ly/38jlbpu - Развлечения
For over four decades I've owned a large aluminum panel from a 1943 IJN A6M3 Type 0 (Zero). The original Mitsubishi four-digit serial number is stenciled onto the skin panel, and the piece is coated with the original gray IJN (Navy) paint, then covered with a type of corrosion-resistant varnish. The panel covered the horizontal stabilizer located at the tail of the aircraft. The panel is only .020" thick....that's about 15 sheets of household aluminum foil...pretty darn thin and light!
That's a really cool piece of History to have, even though I still hate the Japanese,
I lost a few family members in that war,
Cool!!
i heard it was made of wood

Dude lol I was about say something about that 😂
Love these Smithsonian videos, but they all seem to end abruptly. I always feel frustrated after watching one.
They are part of longer documentaries you can see on the Smithsonian television channel.
Especially the commercial aviation videos.

@Gabriel Afonso because Japanese still makes the best engine's and transmission.
The 30 cals are the deadly feature? oh yeah I forgot the 20mm's were just decorative
30 cals haha he is dead wrong
On the A6M1 and A6M2 the 20 mm was basically decorative. The early model Type 99 mk 1 had an insanely low muzzle velocity. Pilots found to hit anything with it they had to close to 50 to 75 YARDS. Which means most pilots preferred to use just the 7.7 mm in the nose.
I love it when others say someone is wrong when they have no clue what they are talking about. What do I know, I'm only a historian.
@@timothyhouse1622 for a historian then you are wrong many Japanese got close with the 20mm and shot down many planes. Look at one of the Japanese top aces use their 20mm for max damage. Try again
Looks like he was about to mention the 20mms but that was edited out.
@@timothyhouse1622 I guess the pilots were wrong when they talked about their F4F's just laughing off all the 7.7mm hits, 600m/s isn't insanely low especially when they needed very few hits with the 20mm HE to shear a wing off, the Zero had the speed and maneuverability to get in to position to make easy shots on a lone F4F until the Thatch weave, the muzzle velocity on the 7.7 was 745 m/s if you consider 600m/s insanely low then the 7.7's aren't exactly a lot better
Incredible that you can engineer synchronization of guns firing inbetween propellers
Yeh I feel the same, and to think that it was being used in ww1 this 'interupter' technology, makes it more amazing. I'd imagine there would of been a few pilots fearing at some point it might go wrong and shoot their own propeller off.
The Zero is so lightly constructed, that it can be shredded very easily by .50 caliber machine gun fire, also it has no cockpit armor protection for the pilot and no self-sealing fuel tanks, that it will burst into flames very easily by machine gun fire. 🇯🇵
Well yeah.
The US fighters were more like a heavyweight wrestler that played football. Guess who'll win (1941).
@ Spread Eagled Wrong about the armour. It did have a single plate behind the head of the pilot.

The one thing that Zeros did not have was self healing fuel tanks...
or any armor in the A6M2 type 21 that attacked Pearl Harbor. This and a lower powered, 914 hp radial gave it incredible range, but very fragile.
I think you mean self-sealing fuel tanks.
Yes, I find it a little ironic that the Japanese Empire was driven to expansion by the drive, among other commodities, for Asian rubber; the very same rubber it didn't furnish the Zero's fuel tanks with. The dearth of self-sealing tanks was the Achilles heel of the Zero.
@@waynesimpson2074 true because the Japanese didn't install them for one main reason is range. They wanted a light wait fighter to travel long distance and back with little fuel burn
@@ditzydoo4378 Wrong. The pilot did have a single plate of armour behind his head.
But the Zero can't take a lot of punishment. It's not very durable. The Zero also carried two 20mm cannons in addition to the two .30 caliber machine guns.
STEVE P maybe it was because later on zeros became kamikaze planes
Bro their basically saying that Japanese caught America lacking 😹😹
They did, but we all know what happened 4 years later
Doug Bevins it’s not that serious I know I made some spelling errors but who cares and I wouldn’t bother explaining what lacking means
@Doug Bevins stop I will catch you lacking boy.
This is the best quality footage I've ever seen of the Attack on Pearl Harbor.
"Japanese planes" *shows arguably the most iconic American dive bomber ever*
Yeah, you might need to take a second look at your description.
The Zero was built with a strategic purpose, to be a long range carrier fighter, excelling at dog fighting with its agility and speed. But this came at a cost of no armor, so when targeted, it was easy to take down. Worse is the lack of armor for the pilots, very few survived to fight another day, IJN lost many veteran pilots due to this flaw. Engineering is always a compromise.
I mean didn't the Americans get rinsed by Japan's pilots?
@@jleif7736 Yes, then US pilots learnt to stop dog-fighting Zeros, basically ignore them, and then later on when they had much better planes, combined with JP losing many veteran pilots as the war went on, US pilots begun to win dog-fights.
@@SilverforceX They outnumbered and "thatch-weaved" the Zeros.
Uhhh 30 cals weren't all that useful in air combat, they do damage but not enough to destroy a plane, aircraft like the wildcat could absolutely take a 30 cal. What made the zero deadly were the 20mm cannons in the wings, those would tear enemies apart.
It had two 7.7mm (0.303 in) Type 97 aircraft machine guns in the engine cowling, not 30cal machine guns. My goodness.
Edit I did some further research on the .30 cal ammo and I was wrong. But saying that the A6M Zero has 30 cal machine guns without explaining what a 30 cal is or the ammo it uses, doesn’t really help explain the situation.

I still remember that day when pearl harbour was attack i was there ! The japanese planes flied by Above my head !
Gotta hand it to the axis powers they sure can make good cars!
The Kates and Vals weren't to shabby either.
My favorite fighter plane
How on earth Did they synchronize the guns to fire through the propellers?? Amazing! 😱
There are delaying mechanisms that are timed to allow the guns to fire in synch with the rotation of the propeller blades. This was common technology by 1941 and most nations had this capability for their in line guns.
I find it weird that the planes were made by Mitsubishi yet nowadays Mitsubishi cars are a popular seller here in the U.S
I like the video
So many comments about the Zero have 20 mm cannon. Yeah, might want to read the accounts from actual pilots and the performance specs of the Type 99 Mk. 1 they had in the wings of the EARLY Zeros. Sure, the problems were corrected in the Type 99 mk 2 they put in the A6M3 and later models, but the pilots found they had a better chance of killing things with the 7.7 mm in the A6M1 and A6M2.
Great to see a lady as a military history expert - as not many women choose that field for a career. My only complaint is that when I saw the title, I thought that that particular Zero was the one which lead the attack. So, kudos!! Using such a misleading title is a crafty tactic to increase views!!

Who filmed all of this? Some of it appears to be in real-time, and even from the water. I don’t imagine cameras, especially cameras that capture motion, were readily available. How is there so much footage? 🤔
Interesting how Japan has always given priority to small size.
They were light but not small, the American F4F was smaller in comparison but much heavier
Japanese engine manufacturing was not up to the same standard as Western countries. It had to be light to perform because the engine was MUCH lower horsepower than contemporary and equal sized power plants on western aircraft.

The deadly twin 30-caliber machine guns ? Could the 20mm cannon in each wing possibly have an outside chance of damaging another aircraft as well ?
0:28 call of duty world at war
and here i thought it was the 20mm that were the main lethality of the offensive weapons package of the Zero.. American fighters had armor that could defeat .30 caliber rounds as well as self sealing fuel tanks
The Type 99 mk 1 20 mm cannon on the early model Zero was garbage. It's muzzle velocity was too low to hit anything beyond 50 - 75 yards.
A6m zero top speed:331mph not over 340mph
Japan made america be a superpower and did t even know it. Congrats on starting with a sleeping beast.
I bet if trump had done what president Truman did to Japan during that time people would call him a racist
Funny how it wasn't racist for the Japanese to attack America.
What’s up with the poses when they introduce someone
I thought they meant they had found THE Zero that led the attack...

Think Dr Grant was in diapers when this happened??
Why wouldn't they make the planes big and slow if they were meant for kamikaze missions don't you think a crazy amount of armor would make sense so when it hit it would cause more damage. Maybe have a button that released all the fuel as it hit
Pretty much why they got torn apart when they got hit lol
I know it was bad but on the grand scale of the war the Japanese didn't really do much damage to America's Navy. It's like when a small kid in school punches the big bully but then runs away
Its the biggest gamble in the history of the empire of Japan… after losing almost 95% oil resources due to sanctions… a small kid with big balls indeed… 😂😬
The Armour is so thin it can be shot down easily.. especially at the fuel tank
It doesn't matter when you can outmaneaver the enemy plane.
The loss of experienced japanese pilots (starting around midway) is the reason why the thatch weave manoeuvre is so effective against the agile zeros. It doesn't matter if you have a thin armor, as long as the enemy can't shoot you.
Japan - attack battle ship, army, military base
American - attack city and citizen of japan
For average White Americans, it was unthinkable and unacceptable that Asians could produce more maneuverable fighter planes than they had. They had to compensate their complacency with a lot of pilots` lives after the outbreak of the Pacific War. Underestimate of our contenders is the most beneficial behavior to enemies.
