    I just replayed it again last week for the first time since launch.
    The entire game feels like a vertical slice. The aesthetics, setting, art-direction, sound design, animations, and underlying lore is all great, but what was missing is fundamental gameplay elements.
    For a game with such a heavy focus on melee combat launching with only one melee weapon is beyond odd. Combine that with a lack of enemy variety and very simple dodge mechanic left the game feeling hollow.
    It's a good foundation, and I'm sure Glen put his passion into it. I just wish the game had had another year or two of dev time.

      You know the funny part about The Callisto Protocol? There was actually a game that did what it wanted to do gameplay-wise, and knocked it completely out of the park where it failed on nearly every count. That game was called Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice and it released back in _2017._ A vulnerable protagonist armed with only one weapon up against horrific enemies in a game focused exclusively on melee-only combat, _and_ set against a story flavored heavily by mental illness? That basically describes both games, and Striking Distance should've seen it and known / done better.

    Things that could've saved the game:
    - A big, genuinely varied roster of enemies.
    - Enemy mutations that are not some toughness increases.
    - Larger inventory.
    - Since it's a more melee-centric game compared to the gun-centric Dead Space, then they should've added more melee weapons and even more melee combos.
    - Ability to upgrade your guard suit once you get it. You only get to upgrade individual elements you get over the game, but not the suit itself.
    Edit: Also should've added better boss fights...and more bosses in general.
    Edit 2: The jumpscare at the end from the original DS is superior to the one in the DS remake.

      Oh bud, that inventory space was big-time yikes. I agree they should have done pretty much everything you said. Honestly, if they were going to lean into the melee as much as they did, they should have gone a little zanny. Like have abilities where Jacob can shoulder check groups, have ground slam attacks, and a throwaway knife that comes back. They could have done all this and implemented a stamina bar so that you need to choose when the best time to waste ammo or stamina is.

    I really hope that Striking Distance Studios and Glenn can get an opportunity for another shot. The game had a lot of promise, but it did fall short. And I hope that we don't see that terrible situation that is very common now by which any studio or creator who fails ONCE is immediately dismantled or fired so that they never get to grow, prove or even redeem themselves. Yet how many BIG studios have released disappointing or failed game after game, and yet continue to get second, third and fourth chances, simply because they have highly profitable IP? It would be a real shame if Krafton after seeing the middling success of Callisto just shut everything down and let the Callisto IP die.

    • @seanjenkins5505

      the reason this happens is purely financial. You can't have a budget of multi-million dollars and then you release something middling or terrible that doesn't sell. The budget for Callisto was reported to be $130 million. They barely sold 2 million units over the course of 2023. It's not quite as bad as red fall, but that's still a disaster. They lost $10 million after everything was said and done. After something like that happens you don't throw your hands up and go It's okay buddy better luck next time. If I was investing in someone who lost $10 million I wouldn't go all right here's some more money.

    Hey so at 11:05 when you talked about the environment and the enemies interacting with it against you and said it doesn't exist at first second third or fourth you may not notice but I realized it's actually there and very present it even gave me insight on how to plan the enemies approach. For example I was running from enemies and I escaped through a path I knew they could not follow but all to my surprise they traveled through cracks in the walls came behind me and blindsided me. After that experience I began testing that mechanic by climbing ladders and watching as the monsters disappeared into vents only to pop out of floor and wall vents in front of my face it was like magic! I then started using the enemies tactics to trace where they would come out of and control my environments! It's a really refreshing mechanic once you utilize it.. it's kind of like playing the game the way it's supposed to be played really brings out the better parts of it.

  • @sgtleolp

    The reason for the many vent crawls is to hide loading sequences. The game choose to run the game on last gen consoles which still use hdds and they load in stuff slow af.

    The game has a lot of potential, and I'd love a sequel, but because of how bad it sold and it's poor reception, it's highly unlikely that it'll happen.
    I feel like the main issue of why it feels so bad is because it was definitely pushed out way too quickly (which they spent most of the $160 million dollar budget on marketing sadly). 3 years of full scale development (not even coding, it usually takes a year or 2 of JUST storyboarding, art design, laying out how game mechanics will work on paper, etc before they even start programming with ACTUAL development...leads and execs just call it all "Development time" because the developers will take the flack if the game does poorly since it makes it seem like they worked 3 years of programming into a game and still failed) is not enough for a game of what they wanted, and you can tell they wanted multiple melee weapons since they focused on it so much but had to cut back as the deadline was drawing near and they couldn't make the animations in time to release it, on top of how they basically reused the same boss over and over due to not having time to make animations for anything else.
    Such a shame, I really liked its atmosphere and love Dead Space, I'm excited that Dead Space 2 is on the way, but having an extra game like this in the survival horror genre made me excited new ideas would come out, but sadly the gaming industry is ruled by people who only want to pocket as much money as possible rather than letting artists create their art for people's entertainment.

      This comment is not only nonsensical but comes out as trying to explain things as if the author knew. So from a dev who actually works in the business. 3 years is an average cycle for a game. Usually the first year us prototyping and creating the art. As with most games the art is fine in the first year. The prototyping will occur during that phase. Games are usually mostly developed in the last 18 months. This game sure was developed in a short time but it aimed at being a AAA when it was a AA game. too much was overspent on the people mostly and yes the promotion. It's not the cycle that was an issue it's the clear lack of direction. Even with one more year of Dev the game would have been average as it lacked identity and a clear concept. That was the main problem. Not schedule.

    • @blindfire3167
      @blindfire3167 9 месяцев назад

      @@natecoet3291 3 years is the avg now, but there's a reason why more and more games come out unpolished and unoptimized. They need longer, which they don't get when a business wastes all its budget on things like marketing...ESPECIALLY since this was the studios first game as a studio, meaning they couldn't exactly pull old systems from previous titles they've made; 18 months really isn't a very long time for a new company, and I'd wager they had less time than that.
      As for identity, it *technically* has one, "The next Dead Space", which would work fine considering there's not so much market on the genre besides Resident Evil and what Prey/The Evil Within? I'm sure there's more but I honestly can't tell you many more off the top of my head, it's not nearly as big of a genre as open world RPGs are right now lol. I didn't even consider him a "boss" - just a heavier enemy type, with the expectation to see even bigger ones from there on out .. well ... no.
    the most annoying thing for me was the stomping mechanic. When there was one corpse close to you, and another monster comes up crawling, the player model will always "auto aim" for the already defeated corpse instead of the one living.. you can turn away from the corpse by 90° and the player will still auto-turn towards that corpse when you stomp. It's way too sticky and dumb, risking you to loose an easy encounter because it stomps the wrong one repeatedly while you get attacked.
    anyway.. i just bought the DLC. I am big Dead Space fan and i love the atmosphere Scofield is bringing to these games. Superb sound design and light, but as a "veteran" of these types of adventure games many common scripted events where easy to predict: find lots of health = enemies ahead, just picked the codes = enemies spawn, activated a switch and need to backtrack = now enemies will try to jump you on the way back.. stuff like that... Overall, there were 3 moments where the game got me jumpscared good. I'll give it that. :-)

    It’s such a shame this game turned out the way it did. I’m sure if they didn’t rush it and ironed out the rough edges we could’ve had something fairly decent. From what I’ve heard the reason you keep crawling through vents wasn’t to hide a loading screeen, and was instead to connect the different maps because they didn’t have the time to connect them in a believable way.
    There’s this really cool video you should watch that’s 40 minutes long where some guy did a keep dive into the PUBG connection and games lore. It was super interesting. The story would’ve been a lot better if they kept the game in the same universe as PUBG. I’m sure the game would still have its problems, but at least the story/setting would’ve been more interesting.
    I know this next part will piss off some people, but I’ll say it anyways. I personally think the game would’ve been better if they had human enemies like Dead Space 3 and had you fighting your way through gangs and prison guards as the place gets overrun. If the combat was a bit less repetitive then being a brawler would work great for humans. You’d also have guards with batons you have to parry and block, and guards with guns. A big chunk of what went wrong with Dead Space 3 is the fact that they simultaneously didn’t go far enough with the Gears of War style shooting, and it clashed too much with the core gameplay. MandaloreGaming said in a video that before guns were treated with a sense of reverence in Dead Space, and you had a rock paper scissors system where Issac can take out Necromorphs, soldiers can take out Issac, and Necromorphs destroy soldiers. They should’ve leaned into that where the guns are LETHAL and require you to really think about each combat encounter and outsmart the enemy. Calisto should’ve done the same where firearms will cut you down as fast as the robot’s weapons do, and the same works against other humans. The mutant zombie things would be enemies you save your ammo for and keep your distance from since they’d be able to crush you. It would’ve added in some much needed enemy variety and set the game apart from its inspiration in a good way. Too bad that didn’t happen.
    Great video. I hope on the off chance we ever get a sequel they fix these different issues. They also didn’t really take advantage of the fact those zombies can mutate and should’ve given them different forms that force you to change your tactics.

    • @Centrifewgi
      @Centrifewgi  9 месяцев назад +1

      Actually, I think you are on to something with human enemies. Seeing the prison culture and having gangs be a part of the chaos when it unfolds later on in the game would have been great. I think that's a genius idea. Same with the security units because they are so underutilized in the game for such a cool design. I think the game should have also had a bigger emphasis on stealth to conserve ammo for later fights. The biophage could have been creepy had they not thrown them in your face from the get go.

    • @shreksnow1918
      @shreksnow1918 9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! I’m really glad you liked my idea. Building on what you said about gang culture they could’ve had a playable prologue/montage where you’re getting accustomed to the prison and can just feel the hostility in the air. They could have a riot that looks like it’s about to get out of hand, only to be swiftly crushed by the mechanical enforcers as a way to show the ONLY thing keeping the prisoners from taring each other apart and overrunning the guards are the mechanized guards and numerous security systems throughout the prison. Then after that gets shut down and the biophages gradually overrun the place you’d see the different gangs staking out territory and brutalizing their enemies. Apparently, there’s one part of the game where it’s implied that a crazed gang/cult overran some guards and took their stuff. This “calm” before the storm could also be used as a way to better introduce Jacob to that guy who helps you by making him your cell mate. There’s so much they could’ve done using the prison as a base to delve into psychology and like you said using the memory transfers to make the game more trippy.
      With a lot of horror and other games people complain about humans taking away from the experience, but I think that’s mostly because most of the time they’re misused. If done right human enemies can be scary because the thing that makes people so dangerous is the combination of unpredictability and intelligence. Having a mashup of smart yet frail enemies and animalistic enemies that can tank damage would’ve been a great contrast. Plus, multi-faction fighting is a very fun feature that needs to be in more games.
      What do you think of this? It’s a shame we didn’t get that game.

    • @shreksnow1918
      @shreksnow1918 9 месяцев назад +1

      Also, for the biophage mutations you just need to look at stuff like the Flood and Necromorphs as examples for what they could’ve done. At first they’d be relatively normal, and as the outbreak gets worse you’d see the more crazy forms start to appear. It’s a shame they didn’t take advantage of the fact those things can transform during combat. It would require you to change up your tactics based on what form the creatures take.

It's one of those moments where you go, "jesus, what had the intelligence to do that? That's scary af, " and then you learn humans did it lol.

      i genuinely feel like no amount of ironing out would make the game sell better, or be better received. as it has a flawled foundation that just does not offer anything for MOST(not all) players.
      its a melee focused horror game, with a single melee weapon, and a dodgy dodge system that feels very underbaked. the irony is, metal gear rising uses the easiest parry system in any game, but even when you learn how to do it, and how easy it is to pull off, you still feel the game being awersome, with lots of possibilities, and combos.
      here, its a cookie cutter, hit 2-3 times, dodge 1-3 times, hit 2-3 times, and so on. eventually you get a "shot here" prompt before going back to the cycle. until the enemy is dead.
      and that's the combat for every single enemy, outside of the grabbers, and the robots.

    Personal, I liked this game for what it was. I think part of that was NOT expecting a Dead Space 4. I liked the atmosphere, I liked the main character.

    • @marcosdheleno
      @marcosdheleno 4 месяца назад

      "People went too harsh on this game " nop, they werent. the game is massively flawled. its a melee brawler, with an overly simplistic combat that is absurdly repetitive. it doesnt really offer strategies, or a reason to engage enemies besides the fact they are mandatory for progression.
      and that's before we compare with other action horror games, like resident evil, dead space or even silent hill.
      if anything, it feels like a prototype for a silent hill in space, done by an american team. completely missing the point of how the melee should feel like the last resort, and desperate. as opposed to a boxing simulator.
      the melee combat literaly is hit1-3 times, dodge 1-3 times, repeat until enemy is dead. with the eventual "shoot here" pseudo qte. the game is hard coded to not allow the player to really do more than 3-5 hits, before the enemy gains hyper armor to hit you and force you into the "dodge phase".
      it genuinely feels like some sort of bizarre turn based system.

    I think one of the potential problems the game faced on a conceptual and design philosophy level... was their weird ongoing lack of acknowledgement that Dead Space 1 was in fact System Shock 3, to all intents and purposes. It was made at a time when EA had the rights to System Shock, but had done nothing with it... and then Resident Evil 4 came along. It was one of those rare cases where smushing two ideas together truly paid off; take the story concept, plot structure, level progression, art style, general "ghost ship" vibe, and survival/RPG elements of System Shock 2... simplify them a little, bump up the spectacle, and present it like Resident Evil 4.
    Put simply, Dead Space was at its best when it knew what it was, and understood its own heritage - even if the developers never seemed to admit it.
    Callisto seemed to be a game that... didn't know its heritage. It seemed to be a game that was trying desperately to prove that Dead Space had been born ex nihilo - that it only had to learn from Dead Space. But by taking this approach, it immediately kicked away its own foundations, leaving only those things that were actually new to Dead Space. Namely, the RE4 action elements, and a reliance upon jump scares and gore.

At least with the doors you don't feel like you're being forced to stand still and watch the process happen, Clockwork Orange-style. There is so much they could have added like WAY more enemy variety, side missions, a larger inventory, more weapons, more character/enemy lore etc. it is disappointing it didn't reach the intended sales, i liked the game and i honestly believe most people would not mind if it was another dead space or dead space 4, since that's majority of the reason why people was so hyped to begin with! The combat was kind of weird i admit, human enemies would have been cool! Like Jacob fighting against gang wars as well as the biophage and seeing humans getting slaughtered and infected before your eyes turning into monstrous alien creatures would add even more depth and horror into the game!

    And then the devs were like "hold on, there's a single thing thag isnt ass in the game? Hell no, let's fix that" and proceeded to fuck up the entire ending by taking away the redemption arc and also proving the villain right by retroactively making Jacob lose instead...

    I really find it difficult to dislike this game. It is core survival. You need to strategise and plan before engaging enemies. This is why the encounters are more spaced out. Split second decisions are important yes however, the behaviour of certain enemies needs to be note. There is a clear distinction between one enemy over two, three, four or, God forbid, five enemies encountered at once. Assessing your environment prior to contact is paramount. The movement and combat is rhythmic, people who say it’s clunky must be bad at the game. True survival horror.

I think some of y’all hate too much on this and I genuinely cannot figure out why. The game was perfect. I hope they make a sequel. The Callisto Protocol and DLC ending shook me. It just cannot end like that. The story was amazing.

      Interesting. It was exactly the opposite for me. Because I loved Dead Space, I saw how flawed and un-fun Callisto was. I really was looking forward to playing it. The gfx, acting, atmosphere, everything was so right - and then there was the gameplay. It took a heaping dump on the whole game. Still.. interesting we felt opposite b/c of loving Dead Space.

    One of the things I love most about Dead space was the monster designs, that's also what dissapointed me most about Callisto, most enemies in Callisto are some sort of boring humanoid mutant and don't differ themselves from each other enough to be interesting or even that scary.
    Necromorphs on the otherhand straight up feel like a perversion of the human body, twisted flesh reformed and repurposed to make sickening alien like soldiers, and none of the enemy types look like your standard boring humanoid zombie/mutant(ignoring DS3).
    Of all the horror games i've played none have come close to scaring me as much as Necros do...
    Also having Callisto be mostly melee focused, lessens the scare factor, in DS you wanted to keep those horrifying amalgams of flesh away from you, you had many tools to do that and melee was a last resort.
    But in Callisto the fact you can walk up to a group of mutants for a respectful 1v1 while his buddies stand around not acting, just takes the fear away, for me personally at least.
    It kinda reminds me of a female cat in heat, where all the tomcats surround her, and then politely wait for their turn.
    But I don't actually completely hate the idea of a melee focused DS horror game, maybe a better way to impliment it would be a more hit and run kiting style while using tools to stun/separate other enemies, instead of just locking you in to long swing animations with passive enemies.

    I've finished the game couple times + DLC. I think it had crazy potential and with some small tweaks it could be a great game. I mean balance weapons and enemies. Make two headed boss different each time you encounter him. Make block actually useful, more combos variety with weapons especially with hard attack, it also would be cool to have some variety like some attacks better block some dodge etc. Make a possibility to dodge some enemies (like that thing in the crates etc). The game is crazy good for like first hour or so but after that its getting repetitive like devs decided to finish the game quickly.

I fear for this kind of high quality narrative games to be rare in the future because some people only want 100+ hours of open world bs and live service games. Much love to the creators who put out an amazing experience for us. Never trust the reviews again.

    Ahh I really wanted to like this one seeing how much I enjoyed the original dead space, I think I could deal with a lot of BS, but I just WANTED this to be a shooter and don't care for melee fighting.
    It makes me interested again that you say here that ranged combat and other means are by now much more of a viable option.
    I'll definitely keep an eye on it because I was appalled to see it still costs full price and doesn't really come in a "contains all" kind of bundle. This nickle-and-diming DLC and season pass stuff is almost worse than what EA did with DS3

    • @Centrifewgi
      @Centrifewgi  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah, full price for this is insane. I'd say it's a solid $30-$40 experience with all the dlc. Ranged combat is a lot more viable, especially on dismemberment mode, but don't get me wrong, you'll still be doing a heaping amount of melee.

    Thoroughly enjoyed the game from start to finish, one of the few I’ve managed to bring myself to complete. It was a decent 6.5/10.
    That said, it could have been SO much better but the mechanics were underbaked. The story felt like the first 20% was written by a BRILLIANT writer who then gave it to his 12-year-old son to finish the remaining 80%. Finding the previous colony? Genius and intriguing. Spending so long in the shanty town where they first found the alien? Painful and feeling never ending. Boss battles were a joke and the weapon choices were hit and miss significantly. (SMG was useless especially)
    It feels like two completely separate games were merged together and there were too many boring bits done on repeat, or a whole new team took over halfway through and they didn’t know what they were doing.

    i dont understand the hate, the game mechanics are good and it gives the feeling that you are in control of a human, no snappy unrealistic movements like in dead space but rather a more human like slower movements. The combast system its nice maybe lacks of different combos but it works a good balance between fast reflexes and easy to master commands. art is great story its phenomenal and the finale its a big cliffhanger. The reality is that many players just want all the games to be and feel the same just like with the fps genre.

    The DLC committed one of fiction's cardinal sins- "it was all a dream/not real". I don't think I've ever experienced that sin and have it not ruin whatever it was from. Outside of that the enemies looked and were boring, weapons didn't really feel or seem different, combat was too restrictive and never once felt different or particularly fun, there weren't any memorable rooms or locations, and no particularly noteworthy cut scenes or story moments. The only positives were the graphical quality, and maybe the setting potential. All they had to do was unapologetically copy Dead Space and they'd probably have succeeded. And no, your opinion on the DLC isn't a hot take- that's basically general consensus.

Its never scary, like ever, but the gameplay loop and upgrade stuff is very fun. Combat is so simple but thats what i love. I just got done playing god of war ragnarok and could not wait for that game to be over. I played callisto at the right time to enjoy something so standard but gorgeous to look at. I will say, i hated the vent crawling and shimmying. Sometimes they put too much of that stuff back to back and it killed the pacing for me. I also loved how the curb stomp forces you to engage with the gibbing and looting system! The story is a standard b horror movie plot which i very much enjoyed. Allot of the complaints i saw were about it being to hard with multiple enemies. I had zero problems with crowds and the game had allot of other stuff going for it. Having played through this game a number of times, I personally feel it doesn't deserve that hate it got. I mean don't get me wrong you could write a book with the number of things wrong with it but I had a great time regardless. It is kind of sad this series will probably never get a sequel as they may have been able to improve upon it and make it something great unfortunately that will most likely not happen. That coupled with the recent news EA has cancelled the Dead Space 2 remake, and effectively killed Dead Space a second time most likely means it will be a long time before we get our Sci-Fi horror fix. Oh well warts and all I am still glad we got both Callisto and the Dead Space Remake.

    Honestly it was more the "AAA Gaming" mindset stuff that upset me about Callisto. Instantly evaporated most of the goodwill the team had as underdogs against EA. They flipped from The Obvious Good Guys to Just More Bad Guys. I might be naive in thinking that but it's baffling how the team didn't realise just how bad all the anti-consumer marketing decisions would affect sales.

    Ok, so about those crawling through vents scenes. That actually is not because of loadings or letting players chill a bit. It is because they created the levels but had no idea how to cleverly interconnect them or put next to each other like.. basically any modern game does. So imagine just a set of random rooms that are not logically put next to each other, connected by a vent. That is Callisto Protocol.
