- French farmers are threatening what they're calling a "siege" of Paris in protest over agricultural regulations. Convoys of tractors have been blocking major routes into the city.
Farmers are demanding higher incomes, less red tape, and protection from cheap imports. The government is expected to announce more concessions later on Tuesday.

Who's more dangerous, a man with nothing to lose or a man with everything to lose?
It seems like WEF has not thought about this...
When a man with everything to lose lose everything, he becomes a man with nothing to lose. That simple. Beware a man with everything to gain!)
Well, you answer that.
A man with nothing to lose.
Now all he wants is to make you pay. 😅
They're farmers lol. They have tons to lose.
I trust a country’s farmers far more than their politicians.
You can't blame the farmers they're being priced out of business
Would you say that about ISIS "protests"? I'm sure they have their justifications as well.
Corporations will own it all. Including humans. Back to feudalism. Merciless greed and corruption by our global corporate over lords. All of Earth will become a prison once Elon can make his get away to Mars. Surprise! he doesn't care about you either.
They are subsidised into staying in business.
Like every industry, the farmers must adapt or go under.
The EU have specific quotas for each country, Unfortunately for French farmers, it is the Spanish farmers that feeds the whole of Europe with vegetables.
If the French farmers cannot adapt or diversify they go under like every other industry.
Someone will buy the land and make it profitable. The French farmers are taking the easy road, complain instead of doing.
Sell up and go do something else.

What do you mean "even farmers"? Plenty of farmers are far right. That's what happens when you live among animals and don't read much. If nothing else, the South and middle America should have proven this long ago.

The farmers are right but the problems go deeper than just politics. On the food market it becomes more and more difficult for local producers to compete with entities like Nestle
Not really. I live in Antwerp and there are short-chain-supply stores here and they are often cheaper as well.
The farmers are right to be pissed at politicians tho
Bravo to the agricultural HEROES of Europe ‼️

You're too narrow focused, this is bigger than 1 politician or 1 party...
Indeed, Macron needs to go. He is demolishing France. His record is catastrophic, chilling.

Well, we saw the dangers of being dependent on Russia for oil and natural gas.
And I guess we also realise the danger of being dependent on OPEC for oil.
The question is, do we want to be able to feed our people from local resources, or do we want to be independent? Should food independence be part of the national defense? Maybe the EU subsidies should not be counted as agricultural subsidies but as part of the military budget?
Oh trust me one this one... if the French can do one thing, it is definitley revolting...

Exporting grain to the EU is one of the few ways the Ukraine can repay debts / generate income.
However this possibility will not fly, as it threatens EU agriculture.
I am a small grass fed, organic cattle farmer.
It does not matter how skilled I am with regenerative practices (which are superior), I cannot reliably run more than a certain number of animals on the land.
The bigger issue is there are too many human animals on Earth's (metaphorical) paddock.
It is not politics. It is not morality. It is not religion. It is not racial.
Our human herd, particularly the european and american one, has been subsidised by fossil fuel use for a few centuries.
All countires are now.
We will all deal with the consequences, which include predatory behaviour of industrialism ( The cheap imports etc) and war, immigration.
We are all now starting to deal with the slow/ fast poisoning of the air/ soil/ water .

This direction is proving to be the wrong one.
The Planet is so beautiful .
It is worth it.
How far will they go? Something tells me they wont be satisfied playing out their strike and going back to work....
Dear DW please support european farmer protest as you supported Indian farmer protest.
How many people work in agriculture in the European Union? Up to five percent. What percentage of the EU budget goes to agricultural subsidies? Around 60%. This is really not a market economy and maybe it is time to think about whether Europe needs so many regulations, taxes and subsidies. In my opinion no, unfortunately politicians and officials in Europe think otherwise.
You nailed it. The farmers cannot compete on the global agriculture market. They need the government handouts to survive. It never works out well and is not unsustainable in the long term.
@@morriselee mechanized , industrialized agriculture country shouldnt fail to compete with manual agriculture . Problems is the rules and regulations in competitions with no rules and no regulations.that is like a completely natural athelete competing against a heavily doping athlete , back in the days, German doped female athletes broke all the male olympic records.
@@morriselee Well here is the crux, its not the global ag market but the stores that they cant compete with. Imagine this>
I grow sheep. I can not sell to you because eu reg. It would have to go to a regulated butcher. a sheep is worth some 200 e for the farmer, approx 20 kg of meat. if i send it to the butcher and they send it back its aprox 100 e for butchering and packaging. So now i can sell it to you, for 300 e. great you get sheep meat for 15 e per kg. great, if you go to the store, guess what it costs. 30e kg. The thing is, if i as a farmer grew just a 100 lambs a year, it would be quite difficult to find a 100 ppl to buy those sheep. If I sell to the markets I get 3/6 e a kg. So for me to do it in scale is not feasible. Its true that food imo should not be subsidised, but the sad truth is that whiteout it, the food price would soar.
As I do it for fun and for my own meat, I dont care. Sure its nice to get eu money for doing nature conservation on the side, but for it to be feasible in scale... It becomes problematic. Personaly I think they should be protesting the monopolys of food networks, but since they own the only realistic infrastructure for the farmers to sell the product they got them by the balls. Id recomend to get in contact with local farmers and deal directly with them, and to do it for the long run. then it will change on your personal part.
But the regulation of banning farm butcherd meat is ridiculos, half of europe dont care and the other half dosent have the prion diseases so its... imagine if I could butcher the animal myself, get an extra 50 e and youd get it for 50 less. that would be something.
@@inotaarto8719 Thanks for the very insightful comment! I learned a lot.
We serve only to be counted by the bureaucrats, they know everything about us.

Blockading and starving the cities is a dicey move. Politicians no doubt have stores of food and can leave but the locals not so much. This cant get out of hand.

If subsidies are cut then regulations should be cut too, you can’t have both unless you are willing to pay double at the supermarket.
We already paying for subsides. So we pay double.
Farming is the most heavily subsides profession. Even if they cut subsides in half it would still be so.
We regulate plenty of sectors without subsidising it.

Regulations don't make things more expensive, they make things less expensive. You just need to look at the whole picture.

I know a bit of French History and it was not the case in 1968, it was not in 1871, it was not in 1848, it was not in 1830, it was not in 1793, and it was not in 1789. Prior to 1750 more than 75% of the population was rural, made mostly of peasants and some small artisans, of course they did the rebelling, now farmers are 1,5% of the population. Industrialisation first saw factory workers become the new 'dangerous class', and now most poor workers are service employees.

The French really love socialism with government subsidies and retirement pensions. They're more far left than far right it seems.
It depends; quite a statist country even by European standards, but it has been governed for long by the right. Regarding farming subsidies, the reason France is the first beneficiary is not due to any taste for subsidies, but simply because a lot of PAC funds are granted per hectare, and France has the largest agricultural landmass in the EU. (France is still a net contributor to the EU budget, though, and by far). The current far-right has shifted to a more 'social' stance and promises to maintain most of the redistribution of wealth and public services, that are now also seen as a part of the French identity and symbols of an idealized past. This is a recent shift, the FN used to be all about less taxes and les government spending. So yes even the far right does adopt some historically leftist economical stances, leading to a lot of discussions about the horseshoe theory (far right and far left complaining together about Macron or the EU being 'neo-liberal', declinist oulook on the state of public services).

France is a socialist country? 🤔
Will the Mercosur countries obey EU's pesticide rules?
According to the plan yes. The catch is many EU countries go actually further than the EU minimal recommandations, so the local government and EU can always blame each other (French gov: yes I write harsh rules but at least I do not want to import too much brasillian beef or soy, EU and concerned countries: we do not impose more to you than to south-american imports, please accept Mercosur).
If your sensibility is pro free market you will blame selfish French protectionnists and if you hate the EU you will find a perfect opportunity to blame its bureaucracy, wonderful to polarize the issue. I wish fun to everyone debatting this issue.
And wait until the climate shift starts and the global vegetation stops growing in a lot of places. 😂😂😂😂

Actually where I come from, there's a whole party for farmers. How do you think the farmers got all those subsidies in the first place? 🤣
The last time the French Aristocracy did not pay attention to the people it did not go well for the Aristocracy. Siege of Paris? Good. The government is making concessions. So what. Apparently, the government was deaf until the tractors showed up. This is the problem with government, those in power keep pushing until they see what they could get away with. Then the citizens, having reached the end of their tether, go overboard with their reaction. This should not happen. The modern citizen is becoming the peasant and serf of the past. I guess one revolution was not enough to teach the French Aristocracy how to behave like proper human beings. As the great Frenchman Voltaire once said, the more things change the more they remain the same.
