This video is a re-upload of my original Mario Odyssey video because I didn’t properly credit Joseph Anderson in it. Most of the first half of this video is a summary of some points from his excellent 2-hour-long in-depth review of the game, and if you want more Mario Odyssey analysis I’d highly recommend watching it: ruclips.net/video/kYJx5xt2cB0/видео.html
heck i dont even think nintendo devs are especially good game devs but its clear that your just obsessed with game design and annoyed that average people get all the tools to create games while real talent has to do it all by themselfs. yes this game isnt perfect and there is alot of opputunites to massivly improve gameplay with little effort wicv are ignored. same goes for botw. galaxy. smash bros. just about any game. (except fromsoftware games lol)
It's a shame because it has the best movement system in the entire series, I just never clicked with the levels and soundtrack over the years. I love Jump Up Superstar, but the world music selection is not memorable. Where is music on the level of Slider, Dire Dire Docks, Bob Omb Battlefield, Delfino Plaza, Mario Galaxy's grandstar theme? It's far froma bad game, but Nintendo could have done better with the theming of the game.
@@EatingTermites exactly. the “open world” comes from split paths and open exploration. the most open world kingdom is seaside which you can explore mostly freely
yea and the game is way too short and there are way too many pointless moons that are not satisfying to collect mario galaxy 2 is still the goat when it comes to mario games
great video and i agree with most of your points, but somehow i still had a blast playing this and actually find modern zelda really lacking in interesting content. interesting how its the opposite for us.
Anyone who makes fun of this video or calls him arrogant needs to themselves learn how to have a debate. If you have a counter argument to his point, share it. Don't just attack someone personally.
I can definitely vibe with the criticisms of Odyssey, as it’s definitely not perfect. More than that, I think it’s a watered down version of the 3D Mario games intended mostly to capture a grander audience than either 64 or Sunshine managed to. And to its credit, it worked. Financially speaking, Odyssey has eclipsed its predecessors. However, in terms of quality, it’s debatable whether or not it hits the mark of what made 3D Mario games great. That said, I still like Odyssey, and think of it much more highly than you appear to. Which is completely fine, I can see where you’re coming from. I just don’t know if I necessarily think it’s an empty and vapid experience, so much as a watered down one
Comments be hating for no reason, this guy definitely got some good points. I love the game, but I rather replay the older games than odyssey because of the design
@@Anomaly570 About people new to games not knowing how to move camera and Mario at the same time? lol of course it is that's why it's an accessibility thing
I never felt connected to MO the way I was with mario galaxy 1 and 2. Its a pretty picture, but has as much depth as a shallow pool of water. I enjoyed the game, but it never scratched that itch.
@@Anomaly570 The age thing doesn't work. I see what you're trying to do with "nostlagia" etc. I played all of the 3d mario games growing up and multiple have released after I've been well into adulthood. Odyssey is a good game, but it is definitely missing something from past 3D mario games.
i actually like korok seeds a lot, they help to really appreciate the world if that makes sense. if you play the game normally, you'll never see everything that the game has to offer, but if for some reason you do decide to collect them all, you see a lot of stuff, and thats what really makes them rewarding.
Being honest but The Korok seeds Even at some point just become useless. You only need like half of them and the rest it's just to get a Golden piece of crap
@@PingasFumberto Korok seeds aren’t just for 100%ers. They are nice for 100%ers, but they are mainly there as a reward to explore places you’ve never been before. You use these korok seeds to increase your slots for weapons, bows, and shields. It’s a nice puzzle to come across every once in a while and really cool for people who like to do absolutely everything in a game.
Honestly, I’d say that most of these complaints more stem from Nintendo’s design Philosophy of making games that are easy and to get into, with a very heavy emphasis on making a move set that feels great to control. For the designers to have actually made interesting levels/challenges, they would would have had to basically make Kaizo like challenges, which is not something that they generally do. It would be excellent and incredibly engaging/brilliant game design had they taken that route, but historically, that hasn’t been the series’s strong suit or something that it’s known for. So I would honestly say that Super Mario Odyssey simply does more of the same. The greater appeal comes from simply exploring the world as Mario, regardless of how challenging that is for the player, because his movement is just that engaging (the capture mechanic really does not engulf most of the gameplay in practice like you made it out). Honestly, a lot of the arguments you made about how Mario Odyssey’s challenges are not fun or engaging for the player can be said about Breath of the Wild as well, since a very large portion of its content is optional and doesn’t meaningfully challenge the player and it is more optimal to skip a lot of it if you just want to beat the game. I’d say, the main take away is, so long as you give the player and interesting enough sandbox to goof around in and provide them with fun and engaging movement options, the player will likely find their own way to have fun, which tends to be the best way to appeal to everyone, even if that ends up being to the detriment of players looking for a challenge.
The problem is the way it was advertised it was suppose to go to more of the core gameplay like sunshine and 64 to be a bit more on the challenging side like those games were. The creator even said he played sunshine and 64 to understand his vision for this game but he still wanted to appeal to the lowest common dominator rather than trying to appeal to the players of those game. That's kind of my issue with modern day Nintendo it's too safe and WAY too casual. Sure you can make an argument Nintendos always been casual but I'd say not to the level it is now especially since the Wii
@@boshi9 lol. Ok tough guy. Pretty much everyone complains how hard sunshine is. Though it's definitely not the hardest game out there it's not as piss poor easy like the Mario games of today.
I can see this video is a controversial one. But i agree with everything u said. I felt this way from the beginning but was just called a "hater" or a "contrarian".
I love Mario games but can't 'feel' this one. The controls are clunky, the camera is annoying, I feel like it should be called "Camera's Odyssey" because I'm controlling the camera more than Mario to see where I'm going. The controls are often unresponsive and don't do the move you're trying to do, the levels are boring, the ability to control other characters with the cap is fun sometimes and there's a T-Rex in one of the stages which seems out of place in a Mario game, along with the human elements I'm not sure there are humans and a city with cars and taxi's in the world of Mario. I didn't feel connected to this game, it wasn't as much fun as Mario 64/Galaxy. They need to make a game like Mario 64/Galaxy without a gimmick, the cap mechanic is stupid in my opinion. This game had way too much hype, I've been playing Mario games for 25+ years and this one just feels boring to me - I badly want to love it but I just can't. I couldn't even be bothered finishing the game because I felt bored playing it, the Mario magic isn't in this game. It certainly isn't as good as the reviews and hype say it is.
My problem with this video is that you can not like a game, but to say that everyone who likes this game has been brainwashed into doing so is ridiculous. Odyssey is flawed sure, but if it is nominated for Game of the Year then it is objectively a good game. This video can be boiled down to "I dont like it so you can't like it."
Odyssey feels like an indie title that received Mario Branding and AAA production value without addressing any of the fundamental issues. If it weren't for the Mario Branding, everyone would call the game padded and repetitive, I know this because Sonic Frontiers has a VERY similar gameplay loop to Odyssey except the controls aren't as tight and people rightfully trashed on that game. Many of the complaints made about Frontiers can clearly be seen in Odyssey: 1. The abundance of shameless on-the-nose callbacks to previous games. 2. The platforming being mostly relegated to challenge rooms and sub areas. 3. An overabundance of Sub Areas 4. An expanded Moveset that doesn't suit the world design. (Traversing the worlds in Odyssey never demand more than simple jumps from the player. Sonic's ground detection is always at odds with the small bumps in the ground's collision) 5. A deceptive number of Worlds in the game. (Cloud, Ruined, Dark Side and Darker Side are barely even worlds and either should've been bigger or turned into sub areas.) 6. An overall lack of challenge. 7. Effortless busywork making up the majority of the overworld's content. (Walking on Glowing Squares, Running in a Hamster Wheel, Planting Seeds, Collecting Music notes etc...) 8. Reused Assets everywhere 9. Reused Missions everywhere I could go on, but since it's a Mario game, people call it "game of the year" and "a return to their childhood" when it's just a $20 indie game masquerading as a Mario game.
@@WarioEnthusiast And the 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥𝘴 dedicated to shallow references to Donkey Kong and Mario 64 are somehow less indulgent? By "shallow" I mean instances of the game mentioning or containing content from a previous game without expanding or evolving on the ideas. An example of this being done poorly is the misuse of the Castle's courtyard in Odyssey where big Boo's Haunt would be, the area only acts as a room that contains a copy-paste chest moon rather than expanding on what the original version had to offer. I'm not expecting them to port the entire map over from 64 because the Mushroom Kingdom is the focal point of the world. But they could've added a boss where you fight a low poly boo on top of the original level's roof or something to add a twist or shake up the original game's concept. An example of this being done well is Throwback Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy 2, it takes the concept of "What if Whomp's Fortress were in Super Mario Galaxy" and fires on all cylinders, complete with original missions and a new Remix of the level's theme, plus Throwback Galaxy is only one of over 30 Galaxys in the game taking up significantly less space in the overall level lineup compared to New Donk and Mushroom Kingdom which effectively dedicate 2/17 of Odyssey's worlds to nostalgia baiting. I'd say Mario Odyssey is just as bad as Sonic regarding self-indulgence, it just manifests in a different way in Mario Odyssey. I guarantee that if Mario were more chatty while you were playing the game, he would be pointing out how he remembers fighting against Donkey Kong or how Seaside Kingdom reminds him of Isle Delfino.
@@prestige8477 I wouldn't say new donk city is shallow, it's not as inventive as throwback galaxy in mario galaxy 2 but it still includes a lot of subtle and not on the nose references like the different stores named after donkey kong characters or the poles you can swing on being a nod to donkey kong on the game boy. And the mushroom kingdom I wouldn't exactly say is a reference to mario 64, considering how different it is. It's more of it's own thing. And also, I might just be crazy or something, but the characters actually saying the references rather than it just being a location feels a lot more in your face.
@@WarioEnthusiast The stores with character's names on it is the Odyssey equivalent to having Amy mention Sticks in Sonic Frontiers. They're only mentioned to get a cheap reaction from players. The Mushroom Kingdom is a Small oval that's littered with Mario 64 references. 1.The "Powermoon" Jingle Changes to the SM64 one. 2.Some "moons" are obtained by performing actions in reference to Mario 64 (i.e. looking at the ceiling on the sun mat). 3.There's an entire Mario 64 costume (it's miscolored by the way). 4.The aforementioned Castle courtyard is ripped right from the source game. 5. A pitifully small version of Peach's Castle is at the top of the hill with very little to do gameplay wise inside. I could go on, but having two entire worlds jam-packed with references to old games is a bit indulgent, don't you think?
@@prestige8477 I kind of forgot about all that stuff in the Mushroom Kingdom I haven't played it in a while, but I think an entire world dedicated to a game is way less lazy than just a name mention.
I disagree and i consider korok seeds a lot worse then power moons. theres only like 5 unique korok puzzles. We can argue side effects of the power moons implementation. but i think it makes the game perfect for handheld play you can quickly load up the game and find a power moon. I also disagree with using mario's movement to "skip" level design. the level design is very intentional to allow players to opt into this more challenging mode of play "skipping" sections. Its a way of incorporating something for both novice and skilled gamers instead of concrete difficulty settings. do you think you were just able to barely cross that large gap cutting off that section of the level purely by coincidence?
The moveset would be great if the game actually took advantage of it. The games level design is way too easy and never properly explores marios full moveset.
Koroks are flawed, I agree. For completionists, there are more koroks than moons. Also there’s like a few categories of koroks as you said. More than 5, but still everything is repetitive. - backpack (totk) - flower trail - rock in tree (totk) - pick up rock - shoot the balloons - shoot the hanging acorn - get into the target - land on the target (totk) - rolling rock (botw) - identical structures - light - dive into water There’s also Addison in TotK, but at least he gives you something good (paraglider fabric for all 81 and also a meal, money, and a depths item or stable free sleep coupon). You can get something good for each thing, unlike koroks where you only need 400. Both koroks and moons are for completionists after a certain point, but besides NPC moons and moons out in the open, there’s a lot of variety with moons. Even though things are still repeated, not everything is… unlike TotK/BotW. Tbh I wish you got a paraglider fabric in TotK instead of a piece of (REDACTED) with 1 more layer than the last game. I love totk but the koroks… they’re why I don’t want to 100% the game
I feel the same! It's a good game... but just that... not a masterpiece... I like to play a game and 100% before beating it and in this case I THOUGHT I did that and then found the stones and started doing that... then I realized... there was no point to do it... why am I finding moons AFTER the game is over? Why am I finding moons when there is no point? That's my problem... its a game that gives you everything quickly and everyone tries to say its fun but I beat it in 3 days and realized why do I need to go to the darker side of the moon? Is it necessary for something? Why am I collecting moon? is there a point?
Why does their need to be a point to collecting moons? It’s exothe same reason you collect stuff in other Mario games, because it’s fun and challenging. That’s literally it.
I avoid buying moons apart from 1 per kingdom. Darker side exists because it’s fun and extremely challenging, think of it as The Perfect Run from SMG2 or Champion’s Road from 3D World.
I don't understand why people are arguing if "there's a point in doing something". It's just a video game. Ultimately, there's no point. It doesn't matter which game we're talking about here.
I've always thought Mario Odyssey was just a series of well disguised mini games. Whenever I checked in with myself playing the game I was a frog, an RC car, a bouncing abominable snowman, but I was hardly ever just Mario in a Mario world platforming. The captures were tedious more often than not in my opinion and I think the game has merits, it never scratched the itch that I came to it for or that I know 3D Mario to be.
15:57 This is exactly what I felt when I played this game. Through subtle and natural ways, each 3D Mario game acknowledged and honored the previous entry by improving the gameplay elements originally introduced by its predecessor. But in Odyssey, it feels like it's constantly saying, "Look! I referenced that game you loved! Don't you love me too?" A game shouldn't have to prove its worth by baiting the player with nostalgia.
Complaining about the moons being everywhere only would be valid critisism if the game was too short because of it. The game takes 12 to 15 hours to beat as it is, with amazing moments happening every few minutes. I would compare this type of critisism to someone complaing about a great movie, because they don't like that the characters have normal conversations in between the epic action scenes
Yeah that's another thing the main story felt way too short. It seems like they spend more time expanding the after game with a bunch of moons rather than the main campaign then made you believe there was a lot more to see and there really wasn't. This my biggest issues with modern games they spend more time on side content rather than the main story/campaign and thing is with me unless there's some cool secret ending to the story, a brand new area or areas to explore, or some kind of special move I don't really care about after game content cause there's generally zero motivation for me to 100% a game 9/10. It's just busy work which is exactly what post odyssey story felt like.
@@marioandultrachap So, just don't do it if you're not enjoying it. You seem to be assuming that they could have made the main story 4 times bigger, but sacrificed that to include more post-game moon collecting content. That's just not the case.

At what point does a game need to be perfect to be a good game? Like seriously. Bruh... Mario Odyssey is a good game. Simple as that. Somehow its "overrated" just because people like playing it?
Things can be good and overrated. Things can be good and that measurement can be considered a boring average. I'm not taking any stance here on that, just saying.
@@user199xa videogame cannot be "overrated". Most people who played the game adore it. If you don't, that's fine, but it doesn't magically make others wrong. @@LobotomyTC my guy, what does it even mean for a game to be "overrated"? If you're talking about reviews, well yeah, a Call of Duty game getting a 18/20 is suspicious at best. But if you're talking about how fun and qualitative a game is to a vast majority of players, who the heck do you think you are to claim that they're all wrong? That's the problem with your little buzzword, it assumes that you, Oh Saints and Glory, Great Magister at the Center of the Universe, The the Chosen One, know better than everyone else. That's pretty effing arrogant and narcissistic, don't you think? You're not THAT special Brian. People rate Mario Odyssey as a fun and well-designed game. It's not overrated or underrated, it's properly rated by a majority. Fun is a subjective experience, there's no way to "overrate" it. It's like saying chocolate is overrated because you don't like chocolate. That would be pretty dumb.
@@drnanard9605interesting. well, by that logic, 'people' rate all sorts of other poorly thought out ideas well because they have very little to compare to, such as a really basic playground. it's not 'wrong' for someone to enjoy playing there, but if a critic feels like they can come along and say it is overrated they should probably show examples of a better playground. i understand thinking someone is trying to act special by just arguing for the sake of arguing a point but cmon they weren't even taking that stance even if they were being rude. :'o
I’ve never played this before, but saying it’s not a good game is fuckin wild. Just by looking at gameplay, it’s definitely a good game. And I’m not even a Mario player.
this game is really great and totally deserves the praises it got, some people just want to be contrarians and act like some minor flaws make a game bad (which is not the case)
Odyssey is you're basic platformer its easy too easy you get bombarded with moons all over as example you take a shit Moon for you or something like that i mean hide the moons better instead of every corner around the edge sunshine is in my opinion a way better game than odyssey you actually have different missions and see how it progress when collecting a shine also the animation is way better as example when collecting a shine and the sound also to that it's just so a good feeling after finally getting the shine that you need and the blue coins are more hidden than the moons the only thing about sunshine wich make it critical is the camera and moveset and the controller based that's why 3D all stars even came out even tought i think it as a cash grab sunshine is literally the best mario 3d game ever made and that's why it beats odyssey on miles
I think that this game, Breath of the wild and Mario wonders, were just all test games to see what parts of those games that we liked. So that they can implement it into their next game. They are all just a mix of different ideas and not a fully fleshed out experience.
And that's the problem. One is a good game the other is not. That's the whole point of the video. I also cannot comprehend why SMO is so highly praised and adored, while I was utterly bored the whole time I played it.
All modern games are. I laugh at the concept that Zelda ALTTP is only "OK" while OOT is the best thing in the history of gaming. Oddly I simply can't go back to OOT while 16 bit Zelda is as timeless now as it was in 1992. Same fore Wii Punch Out, it simply isn't as fun as 8 bit Punch Out or 16 bit Punch Out was. Not to me anyways. Personally I think there's a line where people forget what good games were because mediocre games are all they've been getting, which makes games that are a cut above the mediocre yet below the old gems shine by comparison. Even old school gamers are prone to this, if they keep up with trends.
I think that your arguments are somewhat valid and I do agree that Super Mario Odyssey is lacking in design structure, is somewhat repetitive and can be pretty shallow at times. However, the way you lay your viewpoint is so dramatic that it almost feels as if you were trying to convince everybody that this game is made by Satan or some shit, as if the game was an unplayable pile of steaming crap that should be avoided at all costs. Not to mention that the argument about accessibility is the most flagrant and bold excuse for an skill issue I've ever seen, doing a belly jump into a cap jump doesn't require Formula 1 level coordination or reflexes, for the love of God; and I can understand the two control sticks comment, but if I, a normal person just like you, could manage himself around Super Mario 64 DS at 5, maybe you're underestimating people's abilities a lot. Edit: I forgot to add the most important part, Odyssey is definitely random bullshit held up with tape and prayers, but the game is hella fun either way
I'm so glad I found someone who commented about the accessibility segment, because honestly that felt so odd to include. And you could even argue that BOTW has a higher skill ceiling than MO in some aspects, but unfortunately I haven't played enough of BOTW to make a solid argument about it. Thanks for this comment!
This was an interesting watch. I know one of my college friends who did play and like this game say, when this game came up in conversation, mention the concept of "too much of a good thing can be a bad thing," because there's just too many Power Moons in this game. And after hearing what you have to say, I have a fuller understanding of that--even though I still kinda knew where he and you are coming from. That being said, I will bring up a couple more things to add--though you did an excellent job already, I just thought these next couple points are also important to bring up. First up, you touched on the story a little bit but I noticed that that wasn't a concept that came up a lot. I know that the story doesn't help in the grand scheme of things, and with how little you did bring up the story, you did mention that it doesn't help the overall gameplay--especially when a lot of the more challenging moons only come up after you beat the story. But at least the story does have some substance that does help a little bit. Not much overall, and it isn't very powerful, but it does help a little bit, because it does bring up a storyline that, while touched on in previous Mario games (i.e. Paper Mario, Super Paper Mario, etc.), hasn't been brought up much in the mainline games and is something that, unless spoiled for you on RUclips or social media, you don't expect (the start and ending being the main points). Bowser kidnaps Peach to forcibly marry her and, presumably, combine their kingdoms together so he can rule over his own kingdom as well as the Mushroom Kingdom. Yoshiaki Koizumi got to shine in producing this game and really brought something in to add to the typical save-the-princess storyline that always gets used, and I thought it was creatively done, using the world-building. Some people may be tired of that storyline and wish it changed, but I thought it was good. Plus, the Broodles are finally a new cast of characters/species we've never seen before, which is a breath of fresh air after Nintendo's over-abundance of Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings (some of my personal favorite characters, but I understand others' complaints about their overuse). These are some positives about the game that I, at least, think work--though I could see arguments going other ways. I've only ever beaten this game twice in my life, and both times it was 100% completion. There was a two-and-a-half year gap in between. And, let me tell you, this game works best if you play it for 100% completion and allow for a long period of time between each playthrough. It's easy enough for me, being a big-time gamer, also working on making some of my own games now, and, on top of all that, having a fulltime job. So, yeah, this game is probably the most fun the first time through, but its replayability suffers. My college roommate said the same thing. I agree with what you said about the game being oversaturated with nods to Mario, as though it's a testament to Mario himself. But, for a game like this, I kinda felt like that was some of the point. Mind you, it probably would've made better sense had it happened during a year where it mattered a bit more, but, I mean, hey. Could it have been dialed back a bit. Probably. I dunno, I'm rambling at this point. My main point I'm trying to get at is, this game isn't all that bad, and it's enjoyable enough if you play it with the right attitude in mind, and don't play it through too often. But there are ways it could be improved, too, and I will talk about those. (Kinda surprised you didn't go over any yourself, but maybe a topic for a future video.) What the game probably could've used most was fewer moons, stronger awards for harder missions, replace the niche moons with some weaker award, like the blue coins from Sunshine but with a better purpose (like the Koroks), a bit more of a progression system (Ceave Gaming goes over a lot of these points as well, and also why Nintendo seems to be backing out of progression to begin with. I recommend checking him out if you haven't), a longer story to cover more of the content, and improved world-building (while not necessary and maybe asking a bit much, I would love to have seen them actually make an open world out of all this like it was supposed to be at one point, like BotW and Bowser's Fury). At least I can't complain too much about the races and characters. They seemed to nail that pretty well. Finally, one last point: I, as well as many others in this comments section, think your comparisons to this game with Breath of the Wild were fair, for the purposes of example. It works considering it shows how different types of progression works. On the other hand, of course, BotW isn't a perfect game, either, so it all kinda comes down to preference. Bottom line, I think both games are fantastic. They're not perfect by any means, both having way too much content, but they are enjoyable for what they do. And then, Tears of the Kingdom was even better than BotW imo (others can disagree with me there if they wish). Point is, I'm excited to see what Nintendo has in store for us next. Maybe we can actually see a more perfect game come out from them!
@@champcee7TLDR: Small Green Lobster didn't bring up the story and omitted the fact that Bowser has never tried to marry Peach in a mainline game. im glad you reuploaded this cuz this is one of my favorite videos covering this game (joseph's is just too exhaustive, lol). i'd love to hear your thoughts on mario wonder as well. overall i feel like nintendo has been taking this weird new approach with their games, where everyone eats them up and praises them, while in practice there's just something that feels off and cheap compared to how they were before (say, in the 90s or 00s). their focuses seemed to have shifted from creating fun engaging games that stand on their own as confidently experimental experiences going the extra mile to feel fully fleshed out with unique substantial content, to creating fodder for social media, capitalizing on the impulses of modern "ADHD" society and doing the bare minimum in what they used to do
Mario games have made my buy Nintendo consoles in the past. I played Odyssey for free on Yuzu and gave up. This game kinda killed my love for Mario games, after 4 decades of loving the franchise. It felt barren and tedious.
i feel a similar way for totk. It reuses way too much from botw to the point where you could call it blatantly lazy, and the new stuff’s just objectively poorly done and shallow at best. Just look at the depths for example, same boring environment copied and pasted across the entire map… the only thing that game does relatively good is the new building mechanics. It’s an objectively terrible sequel, and I would even go to the point of calling it an outright bad game with a ton of missed potential. It’s a shame that the latest mainline installments of nintendo’s biggest franchises are of such poor quality
I see your points, some of them are quite valid but the way you explained was lackluster. Also, comparing it to botw was a mistake, you could have totally skipped all of that and continue to talk about Odyssey or past Mario games.
Can’t help but feel like all your opinions and disappointments in the game are the quintessential “Can’t please everyone.” It also seems that little things get to you, like if a moon seems even slightly too easy or “lame” to get you have a whole fit. Odyssey innovated and did what it was supposed to, and made headlines for its new capture ability, kingdoms, and new and explorable sandbox worlds. Your “shallow” title is nothing more than YOU not enjoying the game, and to label these things as “flaws” is flawed in itself.
In my opinion Odyssey is great but it feels sluggish at times what I mean is you do a lot of walking as Mario which makes it feel like botw but in botw makes sense and feels natural and you have horses, you don’t want a Mario walking simulator, they could’ve made more condensed levels instead of the big ones we got for the sake of keeping the gameplay entertaining, so the game could have way more platforming sections, those were the best parts where you get to do athletic stuff with Mario, everything else kinda feels like filler in between the actual enjoyable game

NGL I thought the game was going to have the sauce when I did the first 2D section. After a few worlds, it just felt gimmicky to me with the only consistent being getting the moons. Not even in my to 50 games of all time.
I've never seen someone miss the point of self-imposed challenge more in my life. STOP WALKING EVERYWHERE my dude!! You find it bland cause you're not playing the damn game lol. Kids or those that aren't as good at games can make it to the end because they've designed it that way. If you don't see yourself as one of those groups, don't play it like them. Elden Ring is the same design philosophy, just implemented in reverse. If you use everything that game gives you then it can become too easy, but that decision is left up to YOU.
Yeah the moons is what really bring super mario Odyssey down i definitely think the game has its fun moments but super overrated when i got the end i had a feeling of "thats it". The game focused on quanity over quality. They were more focused on busy work rather than actual game play trying to pad the game so they can put a gameplay timing on it. I myself am not a completionist either cause theres very little reward for completing the entire game. They wanted to make this a return to core or return to form game like Sunshine and 64 but fails to understand what made those gamew fun which was the quality and craftness of the gameplay NOT how many stars you could jam back. Getting a star/shrine spirit in 64 and sunshine felt like an accomplishment but in this game moons being the equivalent waters it down so much by giving you so many🤷♂️
but mario has at least level design, zelda botw has none in exchange for "freedom" making it less engaging and boring, i want classic dungeons back, a actual game not a sandbox bore-fest
Yeah botw is a little mid but totk is rly fun. Also yes they do have level design they’re called shrines. And they did kinda bring classic dungeons back in totk
Your not wrong. My expectations of odyssey were pretty high and I was very disappointed from what I got especially after breath of the wild. @@spagdrettiYeah, I don’t believe any of that is true. The worlds are packed with things to do and have tons of replay value. Crappy is an extremely innovative gimmick for one that doesn’t force the controls to change or completely alter the gameplay entirely, and there’s not too many actual platforming sections but the ones that are there are mostly still really good
@@quangamershyguyyz7166 the worlds are empty though I mean the only draw to them is finding moon shines and many of them are simply put in like random areas. @@spagdretti But, the worlds have so many hidden areas and bonus rooms that are found pretty much anywhere. There’s no way that they’re empty, plus there’s so many moons, that you’ll kinda have to replay them no matter what. Cappy also brings so much excitement and fun to the game compared to fludd, who players are way too dependent on for most things, or the star shooting which was pretty insignificant
I respect the dedication to making a 19 minute video about this subject, and I certainly agree about some points. But I find it laughable that you mention almost nothing good about the game to make it sound worse. Not to mention that Mario is simply just fun to play as, it's super satisfying to exploit the movement to skip small segments or just extend your jumps to crazy degrees. But whatever. What's my main argument with this comment, why did I put it down here? "Absurdly Overrated" isn't just this game. It's the entire series. I've been working on a pretty in-depth retrospective on the mainline Super Mario games for a while now, and out of every game I talked about in the video (19 games to be specific), none of them stood out as "One of the best games of all time". Not that I don't like Mario, it's one of my favourite franchises, but almost every time I reached a super highly regarded game (entire 3D series except 3D Land & Galaxy 2) I ended up being disappointed. Not even that I didn't like any of them, but some of them (Galaxy 2, 3D Land, 3D World, Odyssey) weren't the absolutely fantastic games I was expecting, just "great" and nothing more. I'd never consider any of the games in the series to be a top 100 video game or whatever. If anything, a lot of the games that were SUPER highly regarded by fans and critics ended up being near the bottom of my ranking. 64, Galaxy and especially Sunshine were games I kinda hated by the end of them. They had good qualities for sure, but overall I did not like playing them at all. I'll explain my reasoning when I get to that review in the retrospective, but you can ask me my opinion on a specific game in the replies if you want.
Perfectly fair to not like this game and I even agree with some of it but this video just felt like "Mario Odyssey isn't Breath of the Wild". Also all the talk of humanity and the "insidious" manipulation feels just a smidge pretentious
@@zemox2534the game is the easiest mainline mario and the capture mechanic is very shallow and less interesting than the powerups from the other games. There isn't enough main collectables. It would be as if every challenge in botw resulted in a korok seed.

"l take" "mentioned botw, irrelevant opinion" actually i agree. i really like the main story of this game but literally everything after is a painful collectathon that constantly barrages you with too much stimulation in order to keep you entertained. not that the main story isn't like this, but it's much shorter (like, maybe a long afternoon's worth) and you'll be enjoying the setpieces and environment too much to actually care. the meat of late-game content actually kinda sucks, not gonna lie.

Many of the complaints made about Frontiers can clearly be seen in Odyssey:
1. The abundance of shameless on-the-nose callbacks to previous games.
2. The platforming being mostly relegated to challenge rooms and sub areas.
3. An overabundance of Sub Areas
4. An expanded Moveset that doesn't suit the world design.
(Traversing the worlds in Odyssey never demand more than simple jumps from the player. Sonic's ground detection is always at odds with the small bumps in the ground's collision)
5. A deceptive number of Worlds in the game.
(Cloud, Ruined, Dark Side and Darker Side are barely even worlds and either should've been bigger or turned into sub areas.)
6. An overall lack of challenge.
7. Effortless busywork making up the majority of the overworld's content.
(Walking on Glowing Squares, Running in a Hamster Wheel, Planting Seeds, Collecting Music notes etc...)
8. Reused Assets everywhere
9. Reused Missions everywhere
I could go on, but since it's a Mario game, people call it "game of the year" and "a return to their childhood" when it's just a $20 indie game masquerading as a Mario game.
comparing sonic saying something just to reference something from the past to a tiny 8-bit mario being somewhere is a bit much
@@WarioEnthusiast And the 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥𝘴 dedicated to shallow references to Donkey Kong and Mario 64 are somehow less indulgent?
- backpack (totk)
- flower trail
- rock in tree (totk)
- pick up rock
- shoot the balloons
- shoot the hanging acorn
- get into the target
- land on the target (totk)
- rolling rock (botw)
- identical structures
- light
- dive into water
There’s also Addison in TotK, but at least he gives you something good (paraglider fabric for all 81 and also a meal, money, and a depths item or stable free sleep coupon).

Whenever I checked in with myself playing the game I was a frog, an RC car, a bouncing abominable snowman, but I was hardly ever just Mario in a Mario world platforming.
I do agree there should’ve be more different rewards you can receive for completing challenges, but other than that this is an l take imo.
1:34 no the point of keeping you from that stuff on your first play through of a kingdom is to reward you for beating the boss

Moon for you or something like that i mean hide the moons better instead of every corner around the edge sunshine is in my opinion a way better game than odyssey you actually have different missions and see how it progress when collecting a shine also the animation is way better as example when collecting a shine and the sound also to that it's just so a good feeling after finally getting the shine that you need and the blue coins are more hidden than the moons the only thing about sunshine wich make it critical is the camera and moveset and the controller based that's why 3D all stars even came out even tought i think it as a cash grab sunshine is literally the best mario 3d game ever made and that's why it beats odyssey on miles
I think that this game, Breath of the wild and Mario wonders, were just all test games to see what parts of those games that we liked. So that they can implement it into their next game. They are all just a mix of different ideas and not a fully fleshed out experience.

Nah, you’re just old and nostalgia blinded by old games that aged pretty poorly and mostly weren’t even that good
I think that your arguments are somewhat valid and I do agree that Super Mario Odyssey is lacking in design structure, is somewhat repetitive and can be pretty shallow at times.
(Kinda surprised you didn't go over any yourself, but maybe a topic for a future video.)
What the game probably could've used most was fewer moons, stronger awards for harder missions, replace the niche moons with some weaker award, like the blue coins from Sunshine but with a better purpose (like the Koroks), a bit more of a progression system (Ceave Gaming goes over a lot of these points as well, and also why Nintendo seems to be backing out of progression to begin with.
Who’s reading all of this 😂

The Broodles are a nice change of pace from the Koopalings.

The game was admittedly oversaturated with old Mario references, but that was kinda the point.
The game isn't all that bad, you just have to be in the right mindset to enjoy it and you shouldn't play it too often.
The game needed fewer moons, better rewards for harder missions, and better world building

im glad you reuploaded this cuz this is one of my favorite videos covering this game (joseph's is just too exhaustive, lol). i'd love to hear your thoughts on mario wonder as well. overall i feel like nintendo has been taking this weird new approach with their games, where everyone eats them up and praises them, while in practice there's just something that feels off and cheap compared to how they were before (say, in the 90s or 00s). their focuses seemed to have shifted from creating fun engaging games that stand on their own as confidently experimental experiences going the extra mile to feel fully fleshed out with unique substantial content, to creating fodder for social media, capitalizing on the impulses of modern "ADHD" society and doing the bare minimum in what they used to do
Mario games have made my buy Nintendo consoles in the past.
Bro this is one of the biggest and best shit i've played in my WHOLE LIFE
I see your points, some of them are quite valid but the way you explained was lackluster.

I respect the dedication to making a 19 minute video about this subject, and I certainly agree about some points.
The ratio is crazy 🙏😭

I disagree but i see your point
Don’t lie people you play the game once and never pick it up again lol
I have gotten all 880 moons and played the game again without all moons twice, this game is amazing and his points seem like him expecting a different game
I also kind of dislike how realistic the graphics are in this game. mario is meant to be cartoony and when you put a cartoon character in a realistic environment its uncanny. Mario doesn't need realistic graphics to be visually stunning, galaxy proved that and so did bowser's fury. I really hope for a bowser's fury styled open world mario because that game is much better.
wth even is that argument??? you dont like a game with good graphics? not all mario games need to look cartoony for it to be good
I liked odyssey, but i cannot deny it always felt like it could've been more
I agree with the odyssey complaints, but the Botw comparisons give that piece of garbage game waaayyyy too much credit
Okay I just got to 17:08 and this whole segment about Botw is actually delusional
I thought you were just being harsh but he jerks botw like CRAAZZZYYY its pretty over the top
I’ve played both Mario Odyssey and BOTW and I’ve had a GREAT experience with both of them. Undermining both or even of these games is CRAZY. They’ve also had a lot of detail and effort being put into their creations.
@@Lord_Stardrifter I think Odyssey is a solidly good game, but I absolutely agree with the complaints too, it's not a perfect game. I genuinely can't stress that I've never seen an actually good argument for botw being more than mediocre and I stand by it looking like shit, having shit gameplay past the plateau, having a boring empty world, and trash story and music. It's a bad game.
@@shrimpchris6580If those are your reasons for why BOTW is a bad game, then I don’t think anyone even bothered to make good arguments against your shit ones. Seriously, your garbage complaints are some of the most shit reasons I have ever seen.
Imo totk is the best
Mario Odyssey Fans when seeing the video’s title: *Triggered meme*
I think it's funny that people REALLY seethe when you criticize Nintendo games, as if they are these infallible masterpieces, every single time. The capacity for Nintendies to throw tismfits over their favorite international multi-billion dollar corporate mascot, is never to be underestimated. There are a lot of problems with this game, and people are definitely willing to overlook all of it for some simple shapes, pretty colors, and a recognizable Italian face.
Odyssey isn't a bad game, it's just a mile wide and an inch deep. It's not the best Mario game, although it is the best one in over a decade following its release. It's not even the best version of Sonic Unleashed. I do think it's funny that this is the one time Mario tries copying so much shit from Sonic games, and it ends up suffering for it. Ironic. Planet Wisp is literally a level in this game.
I'm still waiting on a better 3D Mario game than Super Mario 64.
