    MUSIC IN THIS VIDEO:
"O Leaozinho", by Brooks Williams, written by Brazilian composer, Caetano Veloso. If you like this music, please support the artist by purchasing this song, or his album "Little Lion"
SO ARE YOU UP FOR A CLASSIC SAILING SKINNY WATER CHALLENGE??? WELL STICK AROUND, BECAUSE YOU ARE IN FOR A REAL TREAT THAT YOU ARE NOT GONNA WANT TO MISS. THE SLOCUM RIVER HAS IT ALL. DROP DEAD GORGEOUS SCENERY, AND WATERFRONT REAL ESTATE TO DIE FOR. AND, IF YOU VENTURE ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP OF THE RIVER, YOU WILL BE TREATED TO A BEAUTIFUL WATERFALL AND EVEN A BOATLOAD OF CANDY AT THE GENERAL STORE.
IN THIS EPISODE, I AM EXCITED TO BRING YOU TO THE SKINNY WATERS OF THE SLOCUM RIVER. THE SLOCUM IS ON THE NORTHERN COAST OF BUZZARDS BAY, MASSACHUSETTS, DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM THE ELIZABETH ISLANDS. THIS RIVER HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE LAST UNSPOILED ESTUARY OF THE MASSACHSETTS COAST. IT’S ALSO BEEN DESCRIBED AS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET TO, BECAUSE OF THE SIZABLE SANDBAR AT THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER, BLOCKING ALMOST ALL BOATS FROM ENTERING.
BUT NOT US… WE ARE SAILING A SHALLOW WATER CATBOAT AND TRUST ME, I’VE ACTUALLY CROSSED THIS BAR SUCCESSFULLY A NUMBER OF TIMES NOW. AND SO YES, IT CAN BE DONE.
IF YOU WANT TO EXPLORE THIS RIVER AND GO HOME THE SAME DAY, IT WOULD BE BEST TO ATTEMPT YOUR ARRIVAL ABOUT TWO HOURS BEFORE HIGH TIDE, WITH THE IDEA OF EXITING THE RIVER NO LATER THAN 2 HOURS AFTER HIGH TIDE. THAT GIVES YOU ENOUGH TIME TO EXPLORE ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP AND GET TO THAT CANDY!!! BUT AN EVEN BETTER IDEA IS TO STAY OVERNIGHT. BUT I AM GETTING AHEAD OF MYSELF.
LET ME FIRST SHOW YOU HOW TO GET AROUND THAT TRICKY LITTLE SANDBAR. MUCH OF THE SLOCUM WILL NEED A MINIMUM DRAFT OF ABOUT THREE FEET (TWO FEET IF YOU ARE ADVENTUROUS). BUT MOST CATBOATS CAN DO THIS PRETTY EASILY WITH THE CENTERBOARD UP. THE FIRST THING YOU DO IS LINE YOURSELF UP WITH THE ENTRANCE TO A CHANNEL, WHICH WRAPS AROUND THE SANDBAR ALL THE WAY OVER TO THE RIGHT.
AND THEN YOU JUST HUG THE SHORE UNTIL YOU ARE WELL PAST THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER. FROME THERE, YOU WILL ENJOY A GOOD FOUR FEET OF DEPTH ALL THE WAY TO THE HEAD OF THE RIVER.
YOU SHOULD START AT RED NUN # 2 OUTSIDE THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER. THEN PROCEED AT A HEADING OF 45 DEGREES, MAGNETIC, FOR APPROXIMATELY 3 / 4 OF A MILE, TO A WAYPOINT AT THE ENTRANCE POINT TO THIS CHANNEL. YOU CAN MARK THAT WAYPOINT, ON YOUR CHARTPLOTTER, AT A LATIDUDE OF 41 DEGREES 31.6 MINUTES NORTH, AND A LONGITUDE OF 070 DEGREES 57.5 MINUTES WEST. ONCE YOU’RE AT THAT WAYPOINT, SIMPLY HUG THE COAST ALL THE WAY AROUND POTOMSKA POINT. ONCE THERE YOU WILL ENJOY 4 FOOT DEPTHS ALL THE WAY TO THE HEAD OF THE RIVER

This video, about discovering the Slocum River, is part of a series of these adventures sailing the skinny waters of Buzzards Bay. The Slocum River was named after Joshua Slocum, who was the first to sail around the world alone, in his 36 ft. sailboat, Spray.
Comments from the late Dr. Jeremy Whitney
"There is nothing quite like gliding up the Slocum River under sail with a full moon rising behind you. There is so little good river sailing in the [Buzzards] Bay. The Slocum River has been called the last unspoiled estuary of the Massachusetts coast. It is a sort of natural shrine for catboaters, because it was the point of departure for Mr. Henry M Plummer, his son and his cat when they cruised to Florida and back, beautifully recounted in the book THE BOY, ME AND THE CAT. It is a good place to be any time of the year, but in the fall when most of the motorboats are gone and the color has come out on the trees, and the only sound is that of a great horned owl, in the fall the Slocum River is wonderful. It is also safer for fall sailing bein g on the mainland shore, amd close at hand. The ambiance of the River seems to soften and amerliorate the dullness and greyness of a rainy day. And what better way to begin a sunny day than to come crashing out past Potomska with a fair tide and a brisk southwest wind? "

Thank you so much Jimmy, for your comment. It really meant a lot to me. These videos are lots of fun to do, and I am as passionate about sailing catboats as I hope I sound. Many thanks once again. There are three more videos coming before I have to close down skinny waters for the season. All the best, Jim...
