    I am 62 years old and I'm thinking about buying a 22 foot Marshall catboat to cruise the Intracoastal Waterway and Coastal Shores from Cape Cod to Texas, I am quite impressed with your herreshoff, I grew up in Dartmouth Massachusetts and worked in Portsmouth Rhode Island and I'm quite familiar with most catboat design oh, I have not sailed one since I was 12 years old and I was wondering two things number one what is dimensions of your herreshoff and number two do you know anyone who has spent a significant amount of time on a catboat of proximately 22 foot length thank you

      Thanks. Not sure what you are referring to about the sheet blocks being bolted through though. Each on has 2 inch screws into the wood blocks and the wood blocks are bolted under the deck. Iv'e been in very heavy winds and a big storm with them and they did not show any problems with stress. Is that what you are referring to?

    Great job! I'm interested in getting an America 18 as well. The only "con" that I've read about the boat is the engine well. Some people say that it doesn't allow the engine to receive enough air. Have you found that to be the case? Thank you!

    • @TheSalvationNavy
      @TheSalvationNavy  Год назад

      Thanks, Michael. I highly recommend the HA-18. I didn't have any problems with my 2-stroke engine getting air, but it did put out a lot of smoke being a 2-stroke and the ventilation for that was not good. However, I replaced it with a 4-stroke which does not smoke and have had no problems whatsoever ever with enough air, ventilation and oxygen reaching the engine. I may put some sort of vent in there just to make sure it's even better but really, with a good 4-stroke engine, I doubt you'd have ay problems. Not that the Sanderlings isn't a great boat either. it certainly is. But with a Sanderling, the outboard engine has to be mounted on the transom and has a bad habit of catching the main sheet every time you tack. Plus I just don't think it looks very good.

    Matt, you mentioned in the mounting process for the sheet bloods the use is some sort of “ Bexxxxxxx” tape and I’m assuming it is to be placed between the deck surface and the bottom of the first block you bolted to the deck ...or the metal plate and ring screwed to its top....can you please spell the name of the tape and it’s use and a source. I some Dolfinite which is a bedding compound...if you might know of the product, is it similar to the tape you described? Thanks for any reply, you wetted my interest and I’m in the process of creating mounts like you have shown for the topping lift and the sheet lines. Will drop you a pix shortly.

      Greetings, Lynn. Yes, what I used was called "Marine Butyl Tape." It works well, but frankly, after a year of use, its not my favorite. It never hardens, which is good and why it keep water out in various conditions. However, it keep squeezing out and gets kind of messy. I'm going to try a better product from TotalBoat called "Seal Elastomeric Marine Sealant." It should work a lot better and its about the same price as a good marine Butyl tape. If you choose to you the TotalBoat product, you can use my coupon code, SALNAVY to save a few bucks on your order. And yes please send pictures of your project. If you are on Facebook, I have a "Salvation Navy" group there and we'd love to see your shots there too. Let me know if you need anything else.

    • @kb8wfh
      @kb8wfh 5 лет назад

      Hey Lynn. Yes, I had wanted to redo my rudder and I will, but I ran out of time this year,. I still have a bunch of things I need to go with the America that are going to take me into the weekend for a launch (that's a week later than I had hoped.) The rudder works, but its SO heavy. I also realized that the ridder is actually part of the boat's centerboard systems, which is also why it's so big. However, when I remake mine for the America and similarly for the Eagle, I may try something a little different. I may use some kind of foam core and use carbon fiber instead of fiberglass. It's stronger that fiberglass and lighter. But I need to do some more research on that. But that's the plan so far. I will say that 3/4" marine plywood and fiberglass/epoxy is certainly the reliable way to go. It will certainly work and if my carbon fiber cloth idea does not fly, that's exactly what Im going with. Post pictures of your progress on the FB page if you can. I'd love to see how its coming along.

    How does the Eagle handle when being pulled by your minivan?

    • @TheSalvationNavy
      @TheSalvationNavy  Год назад

      Good question. The Eagle I first brought back from Maryland handled very well with the minivan, no problems, other than the snow storm! but the van handled it well. However...I have another Eagle I purchased and it was fully loaded with an engine, rudder and rigging. I put everything I could forward of the axle but the engine wasn't;t moving. I hauled it back from Cape Cod with a 2005 Mazda Tribute (essentially a Ford escape) and my trailer I use for my Herreshof America. As such, the center of gravity was too close to or maybe just slight after of the axle and I would get a slight fish tailing if I went above 60 MPH. So I have another tandem axle trailer I am working up for that Eagle and I am sure once it is properly balanced. met Mazda or even the Honda minivan should be able to haul it, no problems.

    hello, i am looking for info on the outboard engine being inboard. ny new to me 93 nimble mudhen has one and it isn't like anything i ever used. your engine sounded like and outboard,, an i correct.

    • @kb8wfh
      @kb8wfh 4 года назад

      Yep, it's an outboard motor inside the boat. Someone at our yacht club has a Nimble and I think it has the same engine well concept. You just mount a small outboard motor in it and it works well. You might need to get some 12 volt fans to get some clean air into it and vent the exhaust, but it's a design element in sailboats I really like..

    • @mrzif0013
      @mrzif0013 4 года назад

      great video.. that is a big hole in the boat for the engine, how difficult is the engine to remove for maintenance? agreed, a good location but limited as far as air flow for the engine goes. ever get water in the cockpit from the engine trunk zrez?.
      i am new to gaff rigs also, how about a video up your set up the mast and rigging?
      i am looking at a nimble mudhen 17' double ender. are you familar w/ that boat?

    • @kb8wfh
      @kb8wfh 4 года назад

      @@mrzif0013 The engine is not the easier things to put in or get out, especially mine which is a little larger. In fact, I need to take the prop off to get it in and out. But mine's a 15 hp engine and usually, something smaller goes in there. haven't ever gotten water inside the cockpit from it though. It's built up high enough. and good idea about the gaff rigging video. Will see about doing one. But there are a couple out there that might help you along. check out this video (there are three of them). But the rigging is pretty much the same. Not familiar with the 17 but we have a 20 or 24 at our club,. I personally love it. Would love to have one. /

      The actual ones I got seem to no longer be available but these are exactly the same thing as far as I can see. That b being said, there may be even better options available now. One large LED bulb may be easier to work with than ganging 6 or so of these LED's together.
