"Have you ever felt like your life was in high gear, and you were right in the moment, and you were happy, and rolling into some glorious unknown future? And then have that all taken away? And then lived in sort of the post-period of that high? That's what it's like to live in the background." - Stephen Jenkins
This song takes me back to when my brother was diagnosed with leukemia. He would play the whole album of third eye blind over and over. All of these songs, but especially this one hits me hard. I miss him so much. He was only 16 when he passed away. 💕
The same for me... My best friend died of leukemia at the age of 21, back in 2004 and we would play this CD over and over and over... He loved this group. This song and God of Wine will always remind me of him.. Its been 15 years and it still hurts to hear this song.
I agree.. I remember when I only used to listen to the first six songs of the album, due to their popularity. Boy, was I wrong.. The guitar riff, about halfway through this song, is mesmerizing.. The vocal delivery of this song is beyond words.. Tears my heart up
"Where's that crazy girl? You don't get drunk on red wine and fight no more" is my favorite lyric in this song. They probably had a fucked up relationship but a passion that sucked them back in. Also the intro to this is so beautiful.
I still have this song on repeat on some quiet night drives...43yo now and married with kids but this song...takes me back to my youth when i had that safe/comfort spot with a ex that i imagined my life with...abruptly ended. Song is truly food for my soul.
Go watch 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', if you haven't seen it already. Firstly, it's awesome. Secondly, it was packed full of little-known, AMAZING late 90s music. Including this song :3
Elizabeth Laughlin check out their other song “why can’t you be” featuring Kimya Dawson. Another good one of their songs that’s underrated is ‘Slow Motion’. And just throwing it out there, ‘Semi Charmed Life’ is always the absolute best go to karaoke song.
I don't know about you, but this one is seriously emotional to me. Lost love, the 5 friends I lost in Iraq. It hits hard and deep. I can relate to this as a emotion about people you loved, but never had the chance to tell them.
My husband of 17 years married just passed away and he just loved 3eb. And we're playing this at the end of his funeral service to make everyone loose it!!!!!! I willl....I am...love u forever Derek....FML
1 of the top 5 albums ever made....this album is a masterpiece in every aspect of the word! How this album didnt get more credit and recognition is a goddamn shame !
This is my favorite song and none of my friends know it or anybody else it's my own black sheep, my tip story it's my little secret I'll only share this here because none of you know who I am but it truly has helped me through some very hard times and I get this ice in my bones every time I hear it. Fucking fantastic.
It helped me too. Life is amazing and I'm still on track. Sometimes I listen to this song and it reminds me of who I was then and who I am now... All good, always.
For me this song is a tribute to an ex boyfriend of mine who died from his heroin problem recently. The lyrics makes me think of how I still have him in my heart, and how he's always with me, even in the small things every day. Sometimes I talk to him. I know he's at peace now and for that I am happy, but the earthly part of it makes me miss him for the good times we had. I still wish I had spent more time with him and just be good friends.
duuuuuuuude. that screeching guitar at 3:40 just hangs out I the air and it's a goosebump level release of pent up energy and psychotic release of emotion and bliss. I love this fucking song
My best friend and I used to always listen to this song in his car… And now he's on life support. This song hits me so hard now. I'm praying for a miracle..
This is one of those debut albums that just blows you the fuck away. Lyrics that speak to you, from their soul to yours. These songs are timeless. Thank you 3Eb. My Noopster was 7 yrs old at the time and sang along to How's it Gonna Be, this , and God of Wine. She also played a mean air guitar, complete with convincing ugly faces. She felt it, definitely a recycled soul.
I am quite new to this band, Actually heard this song on a buffy the vampire slayer episode but I love it so creative, so meaningful and just beautiful
Third Eye Blind has recently definitively become my favorite band of all time. I got their "A Collection" album in high school and loved it for the singles and it was not until somebody told me "Dude their whole first album is perfect! You can't just listen to the singles!" that I delved into them more. I got their first album and it was the soundtrack to my freshmen year of college and I loved it all. Just recently as a junior in college I picked up Blue and have been streaming Out of the Vein almost nonstop. I've even dipped into Ursa Major a bit too. And here's the kicker to me: it's all brilliant to me. Stephan is one of the greatest vocalists that I have ever heard due to the way his voice perfectly compliments the bands music. Like I can't even put into words how good it is to me. Recently though I somehow found this song again and I appreciate it like I never have before. It's so perfect like that moment your alone with a girl you love and the complete assuredness that she feels the same and that you can depend on each other. It would make a great song for the last dance at a prom. It's a far under-appreciated gem. Anyway well that's my pouring out of how much I love this song and this band. #3ebForever
+Andrew Almond brilliant words mate... I sometimes think to myself why the band is so underated when I love them so much, I mean I am from England so I suppose they were mainly massive in California really, but I was always trying to get people to listen to them lol... although I am grateful in a way how there not as big as they should be so it makes me appreciate the fact I managed to discover them when I did. my absolute faves is this and "I want you"... simply mesmeric
As a person that lost my dad my best friend.... it'd so hard to function everyday without him... all the plans we had and he was taken from me...I think of him everytime I hear this song... love you dad... gone but definitely not forgotten.❤❤❤
Man this song really brings back some memories. The 90's alternative stuff was mostly really good, great era. This song reminds me of Ryan's Adam's "The Shadowlands" and Far From Folk's "Face to Face". Really memorable
This is one of those songs youve know all your life and enjoy it but the first time you actually listen to it, it just becomes something way more than a song. Fuck. I needed this. Fell out with a great friend and they really are always in the background. This makes so much sense to me now. Thanks 3EB! Saw them in LA last month, great show!
The music on Buffy was the best. What a time to be a teenager it really was. Without that amazing show I never would have discovered so much cool music.
Let me put it this way: Have you ever felt like your life was in high gear, and you were right in the moment, and you were happy, and rolling into some glorious unknown future? And then have that all taken away? And then lived in sort of the post-period of that high? That's what it's like to live in the background." ~Stephan Jenkins............ I just shared this with my heartbroken 20 year old son to let him know that we have ALL been there and that it is possible for life after this death.. but goddamn its so fucking hard. I didnt have the heart to tell him that it never really goes away. It just fades into the background of what middling life we try to forge for ourselves. Does one ever get over that one true love? I don't think so..
chris lawrence very well said. Your son is very blessed to have a wonderful mother who has wonderful taste in music. It never goes away, it just hurts a tiny TINY bit less with every passing day.
This is a heavy song knocks u down n picks u up one of my fav in my top 10 hahahaha buy yeah this song help lots of people out but I like ur comment I was wanting 2 no of I can copy it cause I was just going 2 share video on facebook n be Kool if I could put it with it
I was only a child when this song came out, but my now life partner was a teen during this time and loved this band. Even though I didn't even know him then, I still love imagining him listening to all these songs skateboarding around being a young and curious punk kid. It gives me the best feeling lol
This song didn't get a lot of radio air-time, if any. One of the best songs on that album. It grows on you. I love how the tempo picks up about the 3-min mark. Other songs do that. Houndmouth's Sedona does the same thing.
To my best friend Trav forever and always. We go years without each other but nothing ever changes between us when we do finally meet again. I love you with everything in me. I wish things were different, maybe someday.
I love songs that have emotion in them... this whole album was great, the lyrical content fit the feeling the music gave.... and its sad to hear whats most popular on the radio because its all stupid and they all sound the same
Any 90s kid who doesn't instantly relate to 3eb ain't a true 90s kid. Sometimes I listen to Jenkins and Cadogan and wonder how they can grasp life in such meaningful way. This song is just too beautiful for words they don't make music like this anymore.
This is like my favourite winter song ever I remember blasting this every winter back in grade 11 2014 life is alot different now when u get older this song hits differently
ive been a long time fan of third eye blind, but this song has eluded me somehow. this is my favorite song. too bad music today isnt like it used to be.
This song touched my heart. It's so related to the past love life of my wife when her x boyfriend died from heart attack. She made a video with their photos and this was the background music. I felt like I was in the situation that time when I saw the video she made. She tell's me everything while the video was playing.
Buffy the Vampire slayer Season 3, episode 3 "Faith, Hope, & Trick" ... I liked the song before that, but it made it even more special hearing it there on tv
chain2fate Roswell had it too. I recognised it straight away because I have been a biggest 3eb fan way before Roswell. And IN THE BACKGROUND was in one of the first episodes when Max used to see Liz from afar and wants to talk to her. Also “Never let you go” was on Roswell when max is playing basketball But both songs were taken out from the first season on DVD. :(
Jajaja right on Kennedy. You handled that very well. Sorry JohnnyComeLately here. I just wanted to hear this song and read your comments to the person above. Very amusing this late night..Thank you for the smile.PS great F'n song still chokes me after all these years...
I'm 23 now. I heard this guys 4 the first time back in year 2000 I was 12 or so.. and I was fucking thinking the same thing! now the lyrics makes all the sense that was missing back then
Props to my pop for having the first album. One of my earliest memories is sitting in the backseat of the Honda, looking out the window at Connecticut landscape listening to it, (for memory's specifics: Semi-Charmed Life) front to back.
This song was with my late uncle fishing together in the lake while skipping maths tuition.god has his reason why we can't turn back time.i believe we will disrupt everyone's timeline cause if humans have that power we will totally abuse it without knowing future consequences.thats what i believe.peace out from mr pooks from kl city oink oink
Forgot all about this song. Somehow I failed to notice this song wasn't on my iPod until I went and put the CD into my car stereo. I've been missing so much.
One of my all-time greatest songs ever! Remember when music made you think like, ''What did he mean by that?'' One of the last poetic musicians (Incubus as as well).
Not ashamed to admit the first time I heard this song was at the end of an episode of Cupid, starring Jeremy Piven and Paula Marshall, easily one of the best albums I've heard in the last 3 decades
Probably one of the best songs ever written
Yes
Agree 100% This album is stitched on my soul I think.
Hands down best song and best record ever
"Have you ever felt like your life was in high gear, and you were right in the moment, and you were happy, and rolling into some glorious unknown future? And then have that all taken away? BigMeech00 crazy
Stephan man your a true artist
This song takes me back to when my brother was diagnosed with leukemia. He would play the whole album of third eye blind over and over. All of these songs, but especially this one hits me hard. I miss him so much. He was only 16 when he passed away. 💕
goddamn. I don't know your pain, but I wish I could help you ease it.
K E I’m sorry for your loss ❤️
I'm so sorry for your loss.
The same for me... My best friend died of leukemia at the age of 21, back in 2004 and we would play this CD over and over and over... He loved this group. This song and God of Wine will always remind me of him.. Its been 15 years and it still hurts to hear this song.
K E it will take me a lifetime to understand how you feel (i hope a lifetime) but i am incredibly apologetic for your loss.
This song is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard
It is the most for me. Emotions start stirring, thoughts start running.. feelings start feeling aha.
I agree.. I remember when I only used to listen to the first six songs of the album, due to their popularity. Boy, was I wrong.. The guitar riff, about halfway through this song, is mesmerizing.. The vocal delivery of this song is beyond words.. Tears my heart up
I just got to hear them play this live for the first time. Beautiful.
Simply beautiful tears me up every time I listen to it
Kyle H Not with Kevin Cadogan though , right?
"Where's that crazy girl? You don't get drunk on red wine and fight no more" is my favorite lyric in this song. They probably had a fucked up relationship but a passion that sucked them back in. Also the intro to this is so beautiful.
One of the top 10 albums ever made...imho
I don't like most of the album, but the last three songs are stellar.
definitely one of the top 10 underrated albums
Kevin Whiting facts
for me, too
It's a felony that these guys were so underrated

I heard this song for the first a few days ago and am obsessed with it. My favorite line is "I felt you long after we were through"
Highly underrated lyrics and heart from the '90's...this band, some songs, they REALLY stand the test of time...glad you discovered them :)
@Elizabeth Laughlin that line is my favorite too, :)
Go watch 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer', if you haven't seen it already.
Firstly, it's awesome. Secondly, it was packed full of little-known, AMAZING late 90s music. Including this song :3

I wish I could go back into a time machine and re-live 1997-2001 over and over again.
Hell yeah!
Dammit, right in the feels.
I don't know about you, but this one is seriously emotional to me. Lost love, the 5 friends I lost in Iraq. It hits hard and deep. I can relate to this as a emotion about people you loved, but never had the chance to tell them.
Bruce Smith sorry for your lost
for Them.... Stay the Warrior brother- Doc G
I feel you brother. Semper Fi
One of the best sad songs from the 90's
And the top 5 of their songs
My husband of 17 years married just passed away and he just loved 3eb. And we're playing this at the end of his funeral service to make everyone loose it!!!!!! I willl....I am...love u forever Derek....FML
I still stand by the opinion that this is the best debut album ever

Hands-down, in the top 40 songs of the last 40 years. A perfect masterpiece, melodically and lyrically. God damn, 3EB... mmmmmmm.

I concur
No doubt that this album is their best work
My favorite song on the album
Agreed. Famously beautiful lyrics...

Absolutely beautiful song! Takes me back to better days. Me and a good buddy would hang out and bbq while listening to this. RIP Billy, miss you man.
Best breakup song from a male perspective of all time. And to think this album also brought us How's it Gonna Be...
Hey man, I know you left this comment 4 years ago, but god you’re right. Hope your happy and still a Third Eye Blind fan
I am quite new to this band, Actually heard this song on a buffy the vampire slayer episode but I love it so creative, so meaningful and just beautiful
You're in for one hell of a treat once you dive in to all of their albums.

The whole album is incredible, but those two songs are my favorites
StarCrossedPimp perfectly agreee
This song hurts. You still hurt.
Does it get any better?
Still, one of my best and favorite song since 1997! Thank you Stephan Jenkins and Third Eye Blind!
Egad, how many years since this song was released and it still hits hard deep to the soul…
Song brings me back to my ex constantly. Such a bitter sweet experience every time I hear this song.
The same here
I'm in love with this song now......Stephan's genius
As a person that lost my dad my best friend.... it'd so hard to function everyday without him... all the plans we had and he was taken from me...I think of him everytime I hear this song... love you dad... gone but definitely not forgotten.❤❤❤
Hard pressed to find a more meaningful song, from any era. Just one of the best ever.
Man this song really brings back some memories. The 90's alternative stuff was mostly really good, great era. This song reminds me of Ryan's Adam's "The Shadowlands" and Far From Folk's "Face to Face". Really memorable
Everytime I hear it I get choked up because it's so beautiful
Had the pleasure to see them in Glasgow last year, hope they come back to Scotland,
My favorite album.... always got me through my hardest heart breaks 😢💔
My favorite TEB song ever!!!#
Been a fan since the late 90s. Brings me to a good place.
This is the song- the best and the one that hits the hardest

R.I.P Luke Perry. You were such a beautiful kind-hearted loving human being!!! You will be missed so much!!!! love you!!
The drop in this song just hits so hard going from so methodical to great guitar playing and rock alternating between the two
I was only a child when this song came out, but my now life partner was a teen during this time and loved this band. Even though I didn't even know him then, I still love imagining him listening to all these songs skateboarding around being a young and curious punk kid. It gives me the best feeling lol
Very beautiful! Guitar in this song is amazing!
I'm literally obsessed with them right now. I just got caught on "How's It Going To Be" and latched onto all of their stuff. It's all amazing.
What ever it is I love it and I can relate it to a guy that's living. Were not together any more, but I still carry him around in the back round......
omg..I forgot about this song..I put this song on repeat in the 90s...
This is knocking me out right in the feels right now.
This song didn't get a lot of radio air-time, if any. One of the best songs on that album. It grows on you. I love how the tempo picks up about the 3-min mark. Other songs do that. Houndmouth's Sedona does the same thing.
the bits at 2:05, 2:14 (the guitar outro), and 2:42... and 3:19! are absolutely magical
i heard this Album about 1000000 times ...
Got this back in high school when it came out. Awesome album. Great memories of listening to it. Nostalgic.
I grew up listening to the best 90s artists. Now the lyrics mean so much more to me.
Sigh it's so true it hurts.
One of the songs that's so good it hurts to listen to it
The hospital was the last time that I saw you, and I will always carry you around in the background!!
Going through something difficult right now and I come back to this song. Always..
