Let me put it this way: Have you ever felt like your life was in high gear, and you were right in the moment, and you were happy, and rolling into some glorious unknown future? And then have that all taken away? And then lived in sort of the post-period of that high? That's what it's like to live in the background." ~Stephan Jenkins
thats the way the lead singer explained it. when i read that this song made so much sense to me as i experienced such a thing in my life. that post period high is almost a auto pilot...at least it was for me after, very hard to let the past go sometimes and it can remain with one for years till end of life.
Been there for most of a decade. She left for something better and I never recovered. It broke me and I've been slowly plodding my way towards an early grave ever since. I always wanted her to be happy, but if I had known it would come at the cost of never being happy again myself, I wouldn't have ever asked her out. I would willingly give up the happiest memories of my whole life if it meant I could forget all the things that killed me inside.
@@jakeking974 I can relate...still think for me the whole thing of that chance for something great and that high of maybe going towards it is still with me. I mean the memory is still there and that memory even though a great time I'm not that that person in that moment today so it is just a haunting past that today takes my life away and in ways leaves me a shell. hope things are better for you, I didn't know people were commenting on this video still.
In 2021, my wife passed away, and this song very accurately describes the feeling that comes afterwards. I'm sure anyone else who has lost their person will understand how it feels once you get past the initial anger and hurt, it's a kind of limbo, where you feel numb, but also feel everything possible. The world kinda dissapears, and you're stuck in the background of life. Your life, everyone else's life as well as the life you had and had planned with your partner, trying to make sense of this reality that doesn't have them in it anymore. You kinda just exist, jumping between understanding the reality, and not registering the reality at all. That being said, I think the song is very much open to interpretation for every different person. For me though, it's very accurate. Weirdly, I've loved this song since high school. Long before I ever met her. And I always dreaded the idea of it becoming a reality. But anyway. I digress.
This album had so many great songs! Although they had big hits on the radio, in a way Third Eye Blind was underrated. Seems not many people knew how many great songs were on this album. I remember I took a chance and bought their album and was VERY glad I did. I tried to tell people how great it was.
close my eyes and I can see her face. so many years ago a girl who possessed my soul. hers so full of life love and laughter. I still hold her in that special place, (the background).
I can still remember the original upload... it credited the original sources of the 2 videos that were put together. I think they were from DailyMotion- - The one with the couple is about the cycle of a relationship, it was shot in Paris - The other was a montage of slow dolly-ing shots of an empty house Whoever put them together with this song was a genius
@@brittclark2545 There was this grainy one that had kids messing around and playing.. it was a work of art. Maybe I miss it for the song, but the magic was there.
I felt the same way the medley let you know the person pass away not just a break up song excellent video I 🤔 you should do it want you think you would do that one on point
I can still remember the original. The clip with the couple is by some French guy. The other clip (shots inside the house), I'm not sure. But both used the be in Vimeo.

Easily one of their top ten songs. And that guitar solo is crazy.
Such an underrated song
This whole album was so great. A work of art. Play it several times and listen to each instrument individually and you will appreciate it even more.
I just re-found this bookmark and immediately burst in to tears when the bass first kicks in

Too pretty to smoke.
Pat Fic
Don't worry bro, I don't think she inhaled.
the cuts between scenes should follow the song and they super don't, makes it feel foreign and out of sync
eh
