There was something to be said about old gearing where you get what gear you get. It is probably an unpopular opinion but playing wrath classic made me realize it was nice not having gear just randomly be slightly better due to rng. It's kind of annoying to have to get 10 different upgrade tokens to upgrade your gear rather than just getting better gear from doing higher difficulty content. And the catalyst is dumb to have until like season 2 or 3 to help get alts up to pace.
In terms of analysis difficulty, the issue I think is percentages and large numbers, take something like DnD 5e, having the dice as the basis for damage really helps with working out what is better.
I'm less surprised than I thought I would be because "burn a bunch of weird dust to make each gear piece better, individually" comes down to "i think i'll buy the haste mastery buff before the crit vers"
Reforging is the last entry on my wish list that I have been sending Blizz for years. Reforging took So much anguish out of gear rewards. It circumvented the "Those ARent Your STATS, Give me that piece", pressure from other players. It made every piece you were rewarded, serviceable. Because we dont count gear drops that are useless as a "reward", just a waste.
they need to bring back fun tinkers for engineers that also add stats like they did in wrath and let us tinker more of our gear again.. i miss the days of feeling like batman with gadgets on half my gear
The actual problem was Hit and Expertise caps ... reforging without hit/exp caps to manage would have been purely fun... it was a nightmare because of trying to maintain hit and expertise caps... then blizzard removed hit/exp AND reforging all at once.
I WISH THEY DID BECAUSE IT WAS A GOOD MECHANIC. With the removal of hit as a stat it isn't even necessary anymore to reforge mid raid. And even IF people want to minmax to that degree, let them. Not the devs fault if you sperg out on minmaxing your stats. It only becomes the devs fault if tuning in anything under Mythic is so tight you feel like you need it.
the problem is that it's been proven repeatedly, if they devs don't design in sperg controls to the game, the spergs will literally un-life themselves pursuing pixels
I've had issues with Stamina or MS on boots already existing. Was hoping we'd get better options and they'd improve on that front. I'd like a bit of MS as a caster, but not taking Stamina just feels bad every time. Relying on random gear to drop with bonus speed just doesn't cut it.
@25:10 I wonder if a possible answer would just be make another spec or class with those talents instead? If a talent tree feels overloaded and its paralyzing players with choice, perhaps force the choice in a different way?
Flask of Alchemical Chaos sounds an awful lot like Convention of The Elements from D3, which could be fun, lining CDs up with when that big stat buff comes around

regarding this class tree discussion i'm honestly on board with matt despite coming from a different angle. i'm very much the "dont care if its optimal pick whats cool" and even then i get overwhelmed booting up a class i havent played regularly for a while and having to deal with rather obtuse choices. i dont think its the quantity of talents and points, i actually think its a nice amount, its that i cant easily read what choices to make to, say, buff the ever loving hell out of a spell i really like. i had a super pleasant time on retribution paladin just quickly cranking out every synergy i could stuff into my divine storm and loved that, buut then you look at like frost DK where half the talents are active powers with seemingly no synergy, clear purpose, or fun ways to buff em, or you look at demonology warlock and the rightmost line of talents is a seemingly disjointed hodgepodge of buffing felhounds, buffing felguard, buffing the felbite of the felhound, or buffing an ability for the felguard thati 'm honestly not sure i HAVE and if i have it i sure as hell dont know what it does just by reading some generic "fel strike" name, everythings named "fel" something and you cant even show me a tooltip of the spell that the talent affects without me having to close the talent tree to open my skillbook and look up whether its in my common spells, my demo specific spells, or the entire different tab of pet stuff.
i very much would just pick whats cool but the trees are horribly uncommunicative and obtuse, so its the same exact issue matt has, we cant parse the trees we cant analyze what it says easily, the only difference is matt wants optimal and i want cool, but neither of us can achieve that without being overwhelmed.
I've never understood why people didn't like reforging. Why wouldn't you like the ability to tweak a peice of gear towards the particular build you're trying to make? With Hero Talents + reforging + warbands coming, it seems like we're slowly bringing things to a more true RPG area. I'm all for it. Let me build a fucking compound for my alts, change the stats of my gear so I execute for 1 billion damage, and stack all my talents for that purpose entirely. Let me be weak until someone is under 15%
Regarding the non-intuitive nature of the talent trees, the decision Matt ought to make is always 'less buttons'. My dps as a ret paladin went +/- 0 when switching from the meta to just picking talents that synergised with each other and prioritising buffing one of the major dps abilities.
I wish they would bring back full reforging. You take a bad piece of gear and make it better, not perfect, but better. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. In raid, you get a piece of gear and hearth out and get summoned back? So what. It wouldn't take but a moment to do this. You get gear after a boss fight anyways. So there is just trash to kill in the meanwhile. And AND.. your Raid leader could also say. "hey no reforging during raid. You want to reforge while we are on a break that is fine, but we move from boss to trash to boss. You either deal with that, or you don't. Actually I think the class and your Ilvl determine wither stam or speed on boots is better. If your fresh toon, go stam all the time. More stam the better. Surviving = more dps. But once you are geared and you naturally have the health pool to survive. Speed them becomes more lucrative, because now you get get here and there faster, and yes it could allow you to dodge a bit faster. I know my main Ret, I go speed, because I know before season 4 I was at like almost 20 percent speed from all speed stat i had on gear and enchanted. Being a ret moving 20 or 18 percent faster than normal feels so god damn good. You really can save your divine steed for emergencies, and that speed lets you make use of your 40 yard range so much better. The problem with potions, bombs, and all that extra is they never tune them right. There were several potions out there in DRagonflight that would be amazing to use. aoe damage pots, aoe healing, potion of gusts great for low mobility. BUT they just don't match up to Power potions. I am not saying nerf power potions, but Make the other potions incredible, maybe even slightly overturned so that there is a choice. Residual Neural Channeling Agent. is actually a fantastic potion for prog, and to have something to do if/when you die. its not huge on damage, but if multip people pop one of these when the boss is at that 5 or lower percent it would really get you to that kill that much faster. Delicate Suspenion of Spores, is a bit of healing after you are dead. Again those last few percent of a boss when mechanics go burrrrr, your healer's mana pools are screaming and crying, but they keep spamming a heal button. tanks and dps are doing all they can. Again these two potions can do alot of work, but because they share the same cd as Power potions, and are too weak you just don't see them used.
I wouldn't say I hate this, but I generally think items should have... character. This requires that some items be bad and some items be good... and there be certain qualities associated with the items. Of course it is possible to take this too far, but I definitely don't think we're at that point in wow right now.
About the last topic, I actually don't think sims are that great a lot of the time. Especially with the new talents. They rely purely on the APL being optimal which a lot of the times it's not, and definitely not for every possible combination of things. I still think it's a good tool to use because it at least gives a baseline for the best setup that is known at the current time, but it is not simulating every possible combination of talents and how changes in talents could impact the spell priority. This is iterated over time and still requires community testing. There are more than enough examples of top performing talents and trinkets on the logs being different compared to what raidbots sims as best. If you want your character to perform optimally it is far more important that you yourself understand the nuances of the spec you are playing than blindly following raidbots. I would also argue that understanding differences in what is better in certain situations is fairly easy, there are only a few variables of damage profiles you need in the game; Single Sustained, Single Burst, Cleave, and Funnel. If you simply know how your spec functions in each of these you can figure out what is "good" pretty easily.
They need to. I’m so tired of Crit/Vers gear for season 4 world content. I’ve still been doing the Bloom in Emerald Dream because the stats are way better for my specs.
I hope reforging does come back and stay. edit: will be nice to be a outlaw rogue with a balance of Vers Mastery and Crit on every piece of gear. edit2: I swear this is like the second thing they have took from something like Warframe when the Cursed Enchants
This feels like a hard-headed approach to not just bringing back reforging. The argument of not wanting players to have to sim every piece was clearly just a BS excuse. Reforging was infinitely easier than what WoW evolved into.

Yeah i kinda feel the same. Part of me wishes we still had the option/switch between huge elaborate trees and pre dragonflight type talents but i can understand how that would create even more confusion for some people.
why exactly do they still design the game around everyone needing potions for raiding? it feels like that culture was largely coincidental, they made potions that buffed stats and raiders were like "we like stats" and now its just a core feature of the game but, why? why not just not do that. make potions an actual fun thing with a low cooldown and a lot of weird effects, like an alchemical version of engineering. why continue the mandatory money sink of needing potions for raiding? who benefits from that?
Because it's an MMORPG, not an action combat game optimized for you to avoid interacting with the economy. If you don't like that, stop playing MMORPGs.
Personally, I really don’t get the angsting over having appealing jadefire and dance of chi-ji options because it’s not “obvious” what’s better. Like, what, you wish that jadefire was obviously undertuned and something you would never take so that you have an obvious “this tree is the one that will do big dam and the rest is shit” so there are no actual choices/options/alternatives? At that point why don’t you just dump the tree entirely and have a secondary spec toggle for AOE or ST? Crazy. OTOH, as a behavioral economist it’s easy to understand: this is just the Paradox of Choice :P

If they bring back reforging i will lose my mind(in a good way), i was such a bad idea to remove it in the first place Also tier sets, either remove them because they limit your stat choices on your gearing experience, better put their abilities in talents, but at least if reforging is back, it could help with keeping them but in general, they are clearly limiting and a bad design choice, i'd rather have their abilities in a talent tree where i have the flexibility (some at least) of choosing what i want rather to have it forced on me AND on top of that, making this the limiting factor to how good any class with with or without them and it eliminates the need for a catalyst gear converter and the charge system, 1 change, maaany benefits at once! Like...Blizzard, basic stuff, you should know this!
LOL. It was not a bad idea to remove it, it broke the game. Thinking through what it does, you essentially no longer had different stats. Stats on items meant nothing. Every spec just swapped to their best stat. Which means there is no point on having stats on items at all, they may as well only have item level listed. Customization is important, but you can't just have everything easy and perfect, or else nothing feels good anymore. They already struggle to make loot actually feel good, Reforging would make everything feel even more generic than it already does.

Reforging should have never been taken out. Blizzard doesn't understand their own stats and I am sick of getting stats I don't want or are actually useless as fuck. Like getting haste with an assassination rogue. Why? I do double the damage by having 5% haste and like 40% crit and like 80% mastery.

I wish they would bring back the fun with pickpocketing. I loved it when it had a reason. Griftah wouldn’t just leave a good grift.
Oh for the old days of vanilla, when an alchemist could stack all their potions.
Back when professions had meaning beyond just endgame
7:36 was that an IRA joke?
based
Better than getting useless versatility gear every week from the vault.
finally Bell getting some grey beard!
If they bring back reforging i will lose my mind(in a good way), i was such a bad idea to remove it in the first place
Also tier sets, either remove them because they limit your stat choices on your gearing experience, better put their abilities in talents, but at least if reforging is back, it could help with keeping them but in general, they are clearly limiting and a bad design choice, i'd rather have their abilities in a talent tree where i have the flexibility (some at least) of choosing what i want rather to have it forced on me AND on top of that, making this the limiting factor to how good any class with with or without them and it eliminates the need for a catalyst gear converter and the charge system, 1 change, maaany benefits at once!
@@DarkScreamGames "Every spec just swapped to their best stat"
And that's a bad thing...somehow...
"Customization is important, but you can't just have everything easy and perfect, or else nothing feels good anymore."
If you have the choice to do or not to do, what's is the problem with that?
"They already struggle to make loot actually feel good"
And reforging can solve, that partially, it is a type of solution to this problem.
"Reforging would make everything feel even more generic than it already does."
If their design is shit and Reforging causes that then Reforging is not the issue, it's their design.
I just want reforging.
They are pussy footing because putting it back in would be admitting they fucked up
make it a 1min utility potions seperate from dps potions
Tbh remove dps potioms. Profoundly boring
YESS REFORGING THIS SOUNDS SO COOL!
I would rather have reroll options in the vault
the reforging. another case of idea: great. implementation: terrible. yay to the hour flasks again though & weird useful potions
Reforging was great made ilvl relevant nothing worse then gettin a higher ilvl ring that gets vendored koz wrong stats
I have nothing against reforging I always thought it was a good thing
I'm not a fan of this kind of thing. There's going to be a "right" way to do this and in the end it'll add nothing to the game.
I loved reforging
They should also bring titan forged items too
they kind of do for questing
I can't wait to find out what type of material they will make you guys farm for 10 hours a week to utilize this. I say you guys, because I stopped playing world of p2wcraft.
I am like number 106
I hated reforging
There are no good mobile games, begone Matt
Please yes. Give me reforging
i liked reforging. idk
Reforging stats on gear? Should have never been removed to begin with.
they really need to just bring back reforging
Oh no. Please stop.
Stop what
Guys, you should shave
Cringe clickbait, should be reported and uniranonically banned/demonetized.
What are you even on about?
Theres this thing called "Don't Recommend Channel" if you dont like him
Clickbait isn’t a punishable offence. Furthermore, by commenting and viewing, you’ve indirectly supported them.
Bit of advice, you can also control what you see on your recommends if you don’t want this content.
Tbh i loved forging gear... get a peice of gear with shit stats ... just change them up to a bis peice. perfect. Good thing if its coming back 👍👍 Although blizz tend to bloat the fuck out of wow ... it should be easy enough to sort out ingame rather than go to another website, calculute and sim out of game. Just dumb choices.
