Thanks for this great tip! I just got some snap swivels at a local bait & tackle shop and attached one to my parachute using your very clear instructions. I’m just getting back into model rockets, building my first one in 50 years.
Great video, watching these rocket videos brings back memories from childhood, making rockets at Christmas time and launching them with the uncles and the cousins
@@apogeerockets One question though. If you are using a nomex parachute protector and want to protect the chute release, would you pack everything up nice and tight like you demonstrated, and then "blanket" the chute protector around the whole bundle or would you wrap that around the chute and forego protecting the chute release device? Thanks again!
When to use Streamer Recovery may make a good topic to cover...unless you are into Search and Rescue as you mentioned in the comment below. Venting parachutes is also something to consider. Also people erroneously believe that shooting into the wind will make the rocket recoverable easier. Of course that is a great way of turning your rocket into a lawn dart.
Great video, Tim! I know this is an older video, but I have seen a few different shapes/designs for parachutes, do you think you could ever do a video talking about parachute design?
Tim: Using a fishing swivel is a great idea. I just started watching your videos and subscribed a couple of weeks ago. I also took a look at some of the kits you have on your website. It's great to see there's another company out there making kits and components. Thank you for sharing your ideas on RUclips. Did you ever think about creating a rocket that was inspired by a sci-fi movie? I haven't looked at your entire website yet so you may already have a kit like that. A kit like that might make a great master class video. It would probably present some unique challenges. Not only with the build, but with the physics as well. If you have a video like that, please let me know. If not, would you consider making one?
This is a great video!! Why is though more parachute manufactures do not sewn their lines across from one another instead of corner to corner? It makes more sense to sewn them across from each other and will provide better performance and less tangling. I agree the swivel do help, but if they would take the time to do it right I'm sure their sales would increase. This is my biggest pet peeve I have with flat pre sewn chutes.
I learned something today.... I launched a rocket with a tangled parachute (I was willing to lose the rocket). it fell rather hard but survived intact. compared to other rockets with proper parachutes, it landed close by instead of traveling 3/4 to 1 mile away. bottom line I didn't have to spend time tracking down the rocket.
Yeah, depending on your setup this is why people like to use different types of recovery systems or even dual deployment to avoid the part of the hobby where you go from "rocketeer" to "search and rescue" ha.
Please make more build tip videos! Also, is there any chance you guys will be shipping rocket motors internationally? I and a lot of people would really like that.
For North Carolina Science Olympiad we are building a ping pong parachute. We are building rockets that are launched with 60psi with a detachable parachute with a ping pong ball. The objective is to have the ping pong ball in the air the longest. What do you recommend? Parachute size? Material? Design? Thank you for your help. Mike.
If you search "parachutes" on the search bar of our website www.apogeerockets.com this will lead you to some articles and parachute options to aid in your research for your competition.

Had this happen while testing my rocket and it fell like a rock. Thank you Tim

Have always fought with this… great video Tim!
Thank you for producing these videos. It keeps me coming back to learn things daily.
You're welcome.

Been making an folding parachutes at 8 years old. Good lesson on folding instead of stuffing the chute into the body

Great info. I think everyone has had a parahcute fail to open corrrectly one time or another.
Thanks for the good info. I didn't realize the value of the swivel. I am off to get one!
No problem, thanks for watching!

I'll consider it.
Can Rock Sim be used to make a four sided pyramid?

The Apogee brand of nylon parachutes are sewn like those shown in this video. I think you'll like them a lot.
Awesome tips!

I’m really appreciate this video!! Thank you
Thanks. Dr. K
I am going to make my own parachute using ripstop nylon. Do i need to use special thread for sewing the seams and folded edges?
I don't know. Probably not.

Thank you this was very helpful
I'm so glad!
i made one yesterday but all 8 of my lines are single and i just tied a knot in the end. will that work?
Yes. That will work. Go for it.

Nice video, one question.. for 700g and for 1 kg what diameter (size parachute) is required for a very slow landing?
Thanks.
Gow about for 16 cord parachute
Super knowledge video
Skydiver here... wasn't quite what I was looking for lol
😂😂😂
What I do is use a fishing swivel and I’ve never had a problem
Then you're fine. Go for it!
