I'm a bit older. During my time in school, which was during the Cold War, we didn't just do fire drills. We did these drills. Under our desks in case of Nuke attack. Fallout shelter signs everywhere. Back then, the bombs and delivery systems were nothing compared to today.
We were never scared during these drills though; we didn't know what they were for exactly.
Peace through strength, basically applied to how many nukes Russia and America had.
I do remember the Salt 1 and 2 talks and part of it was to eliminate fallout shelters with logic being that if you have these shelters that is seen as aggression. Eventually, all those signs disappeared.
What is seen on this clip is what will destroy humanity.

The shift from "Nah, they wouldn't be THAT stupid to really drop the bomb...." to "Holy shit they really did it..." in Goggins face was awesome. One of my all time favorite cold-opens to a show.
It’s brilliant. Also setting it in a house up on a hillside with full length windows was so smart…they skyline becomes so menacing

Tinkling glass 10 miles from a nuclear explosion and people calmly exiting the room? That house would have been leveled in half a second and shadows imprinted in cement would be all that was left of them.

at 4 times the distance regardless of the point comparing, the the energy and force is 1/16 at the 4X distance ie heat and blast at 2 miles compared to 8

That far away , probably not , even a fatal radiation dose would take a day .
depends on distance. at the outer fringes of the blast say 30 miles away the force is far reduced not enough to flatten and burn everything.

Striking effects, but I suspect the initial fireball would be much too bright to look at - in fact blinding - at the distances shown here.

no. the blinding only last for a split second at time of detonation. THAT radiation is gone in the flash. look at atomic testing vids the spectators remove the welders glasses very soon.

I went to Amazon Prime to watch this after seeing it here and I can’t believe how disgustingly violent and gruesome it is…hacking each other up… is this what entertainment has become for us in 2024? I feel sorry for anyone here who says this is a good series. You need help.

Its not just the brightness of the initial flash. Its an intense burst of gamma radiation, X-rays, infrared, etc.

You need a large antenna to accept an EMP. Long electrical cables would be the susceptible to this. Just because something has a microchip does not mean it will be affected.

Ground burst maximizes fallout, which is both the title and seemingly the goal of the ones setting them off in this story.

Fallout 4 was a great game , not too sure about this
Brilliant series one of the best I’ve watched, genius writing and magnificent acting from all the actors involved, its actually quite intellectually fascinating and one should pay attention to every little detail the writers want you to see once again brilliant and highly recommended really is showing a perspective of our reality in a parallel world never thought I was going to love it.
