Buying a ''HIGH MILEAGE'' 2017 Range Rover 3.0TDV6 - IS IT RISKY?

- Should you buy a high mileage L405 Range Rover?
In todays video I talk about some of the common problems and worries people have when looking at buying a used Range Rover. I share my experience and some of the problems I faced on a 2017 Range Rover Vogue with 86,000 miles.
My 2004 TDV6 had 300,000 miles and was running perfectly when I sold it. BUT, I insisted in changing the engine oil every 3,000 miles and never had a problem. As mmy mechanic says, an engine oil change is the cheapest mechanic you can buy. I now have a 2018 Autobiography with the 4.4 diesel engine which is fabulous and will cruise at 125 mph on the autobahn pulling just 2,500 rpm in 8th gear. High mileage is good as long as they have been serviced well.
I totally agree, with my cars, I change oil every 4000 miles, or 6 months, whatever comes first
Do you recommend 3L or 4.4L and why?
@@lionheart.5983 4.4litre
1. It avoids the risk of crankshaft failure that the 3.0 diesel can suffer from.
2. The single turbo TDV6's have bottom end turbo lag that the SDV8's don't have.
3. The active anti-roll on the SDV8's (not on the V6's) is great at stopping body roll.
4. The performance is stunning for a diesel.
5. The brakes are much larger on the front of the 4.4
Spot on mate, how do you afford it?
Once you drive a rover, you hook nothing else floats like this!! Facts!!@!!
I have owned a 2017 L405 from new (showing 108,000 miles now) and would add the following:
1. The base Vogue has less comfortable seats, with fewer adjustments.
2. Go for the Autobiography if you want full leather - it will double the amount of leather inside the car (ceiling, dash, door coverings, centre console).
3. 20” rims ride so much better than the larger rim sizes.
4. Avoid the V6 diesel to save the cost of crank failure and the excessive body roll that comes with the basic suspension.
Nice, any reliabilty issues tho?
@@Elijah-cy9do
It needed a new engine oil level sensor at around 35,000 miles and at 115,500 miles and 4 years 4 months old, 2 suspension bushes are starting to show their age and will need changing before the next MoT in September.
It needed a new suspension cable for the rear tailgate at around 100,000 miles, but then I use the tailgate a lot more than most.
Not bad for the use it gets 👍
@@Jon-zj2nj yeah seems really good for a big old luxury 4x4, i watched Doug Demuro's video on what was done to his L322 and was expecting it to be like that
It is your diesel or petrol? I got the diesel omg so good on gas
@@fraisergaragetv2030
4.4 SDV8 diesel. I’ve just driven from Cornwall to Scotland and back and despite heavy traffic, got a genuine 34 mpg.
Ansolutely love that V8 👍
I’m on my second L405, first being a 2015 TDV8 Autobiography that had a full Kahn conversion from new, bought at under a year old and only fault was an engine oil seal, the 23 inch alloys destroyed tyres so I’ve changed it for another TDV8 Autobiography (2016), had it around a year and just turned 50k miles, so far it’s been reliable although it did have the odd electrical issue which I think was due to the battery charge in lockdown when it stood around a lot, since I’m using it more they haven’t reappeared. I’ve always used main dealer or specialist for servicing, whilst they do depreciation like falling masonry you have to service correctly and accept it’s an expensive car to run. As far as build quality I’ve had in recent years Audi, Bentley and Porsche and whilst not at Bentley level Land Rover is certainly more premium than Porsche and feels tighter than my 2015 Porsche with similar mileage.
The crankshaft bearings fail on the 3.0 tdv6.
I have seen this loads of times and quite often the block and crankshaft are scrap metal, be prepared for a £5000 repair bill.
I run an engine reconditioning business beware.
What age of vehicle or do you mean the 3.0 TDV6 in general mate? Thanks!
It's the 3.0 tdv6 in general even when fitted to the Jaguars.
My advice if you have got one or thinking of buying one is change the oil and filter every 6000 miles.
I'm on the fence about buying one but the person selling is losing patience with me. It's a 2015 3.0 diesel, one owner from new, no finance and has 11,200 miles (yes 11,200) from new. It's a close family member thats offered it to me. It's a beautiful thing to sit in but reliability (reputation) makes me twitchy.
here in brazil we have problems with any model that uses the TDV6 procuded before 2014, from 2014 and above it's pretty reliable
@@tonylee-UK
What did you do in the end Tony?
My 2015 supercharged V8 has been reliable. Only major thing I’ve had done was the sway bar bushings. Other costs were brakes and tires. I do wish I had the updated gauge cluster and a LWB
thats extremly good to hear!! my 2012 5.0 was a nightmare unfortunately :( ~$2,500 bills left and right for; fuel injectors, computer reprograms, cooling system, etc. etc. the maintenance for one year was far too much. My W220 S-class gave me zero issues in 3 years.. crazy!! I know they said they fixed most of the issues in 2014, do you know if this is true? Ive been looking into rovers again and im scared of the nightmare happening again buying another 5.0. thank you!!!
The DPF throttle body issue you had is a Land Rover Technical Bulletin, there is a sensor on the throttle body that gets blocked up with carbon over time and eventually in term causes the DPF issues. If you monitor it you can clean off the sensor in the throttle body but if the fault persists after that then the bulletin says to replace the throttle body.
Why haven't you got your hands on the steering wheel
I’ve been the second owner of two low mileage Range Rovers, one a sport and one a Vogue, both have been excellent cars with no problems. I have owned other prestige models cars from new and frankly had more issues than with the RR cars. It seems topical for some people who knew someone whose third removed cousin removed knew someone who had a problem etc. I only buy 2-3 year old low mileage cars these days and enjoy a 40-50% discount from new and let someone else pay for the initial depreciation.
I couldn’t agree more!
@BuySellCars TV A lot of great information which will help with my purchase of RR. Thks
I had my 2006 Range Rover Sport HSE fully loaded for 15 years, had 210k + miles. I didn't have all the issues that people complain about, but I take care of my car!! You have to do the required maintenance to avoid issues. I did have the sway bar bushings thing, I had to replace the airbag suspension thing but out of 15 years, I mean come on, that's normal wear and tear. If you have a reputable place for car repairs after the warranty is up and you don't have an extended warranty then you are good. My car drove well all that time and I only sold it to buy another one. :-) Love these cars!!!
I have a 2016 L405 TD6 with 128k Miles, I just love how this car drives and is tight as it was when new. The interior has held up very well and the air suspension make it a magnificent road car. If it wasn't for DEF fluid and it's interfacing with the catalyst and SCR I would have no complaints. The software locks you down with no starts after 249 miles even with plenty of fresh DEF fluid. I clean the injector of the crystalized DEF fluid and rest the code and that typically cures it. Otherwise I'd have no issues at all. Hope to drive it another 120k Miles.
Good video. Considering a 2017 Autobiography next March when my company car goes back. The company car is a Tesla and I’m looking to get something completely the opposite and just go for what I have always wanted - a RR. Just need to convince my wife that a RR isn’t too big and check how easy it is to park on our driveway. Will be test driving soon.
4.4 SDV8. DPF crapped out at 70000 miles, local garage cleaned & refitted it.
Love it to bits & will sell it once it dies.
i bought a 2013 L405 V6 from UK when it was 3 years old 29000miles. Shipped to New Zealand. It is the Autobiogrphy, so 22 inch wheels low profile not really suitable for our high kerbs here. Car now done 109000 kilometres 60000 miles. Have had cam belt changed, all brakes replaced regular servicing 2 batteries. Great car my only issue rear top door will not close itself, the other three operations ok. No one here try as they do can source the problem. At 76 ex B/L engineer I will not be updating it will have to last me, my other toy is 87 XJSC V12 which drains my pension. Enjoyed your report. I have owned 3 E types 2 XJ6 in the 1970s, Mercedes, series 3 Rangerover, this current car my best drive of the lot.
Fixed glass roof is a waste of space no point in them. Opening glass roof yes as it opens. Fixed get like a greenhouse in summer and cold in winter.
Im really excited im off to purchase and collect a 2017 sdv8 rangy tomorrow, my first l405 after owning a few l322 and not having one in my life for a year or so. It’s been missing. Key is service history and decent owners. I openly etmit im probably biased and have a soft spot to jlr products, but always be aware of certain issues and avoid certain engines like the ingenium engines. My only complaint is insurance has massively up but to be far even if i went with a bmw x5 and other equal suv the insurance was coming to a similar price. Which i was a little surprised with. But at least it isn’t gone mad like in other parts of the country. But my personal experience is if you stick with the proven formula there no less unreliable than any other equal product, I’ve had more issues with a honda than both l322 combined. But still not a vechele to skimp on.
Bought a 15 plate RR sport HSE new and still have it. 77K miles later the car has been an excellent car. Yes it has cost money to service and a few niggles to report and an oil leak has been repaired - so too one of the deploying steps that froze. It’s an expensive car to buy so keeping on top of it will be pricey compared to many “lesser” cars. A knowledgeable independent garage is what you require when you look to buy one of these older Range Rover or RR Sport. Pretty quick, very comfortable, loads of space well appointed and you feel very safe on rain soaked highways I can tell you. The average fuel consumption over the life of the car has been precisely 34mpg as well which I think is impressive for a 2.2 ton 300bhp barge. with Up to 40 mpg on plodding motorway runs. If and when I decide to trade up to a newer one somebody is going to get one hell of a car for about a third of the price I paid for it.
Superb video, thanks. I've been offered a RR Sport 3.0 diesel and was doing my research when this came up. Very informative and educational, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I got offered one also . Offer up? Simi Valley guy
Stop saying "I'll be honest with you" We expect you to be honest.
I am about to buy a used one from 2016-2017
Thanks for the advice and nice content.👏🏾
My daughter had a Corsa, I know not a RR, but the timing chain tensioner was sticking, used STP engine flush twice with new oil in two weeks, and then no bother. Used it every oil change, every 5k miles no bother at all.Our local garage to me that a RR really benefits from this so bear in mind.
Amazing video keep up the good work and thank you for sharing your experience and advice 👍
Can't believe they dropped the TD6 in US for 2022, I will drive it till the wheels fall off! 100k on my 2016 and it pulls great, 30mpg and tows like a charm and so comfy. Hard to believe. New PHEV only has 5500# towing capablity, probably because of the battery weight. Can't believe the Defender 110 with the 6 has a 8500# rating
hows the reliability, i’m looking to get a 2016 Range Rover TD6 with 70k miles
any reliability update?

Seriously ? . LOL.
4 year old 86000 miles this is not high the Range Rover if serviced properly and with premium oil it will last over 400,000 miles easily. But it will cost you as electronics arent the greatest and anything parts wise with a Range Rover badge on it is expensive to buy. I’d buy it at the right price
You've had the car " quite a while now" 2/3 months,lol.
I’d buy this with a warranty ONLY. I’d also only buy the diesel version because of the gas mileage
I don't imagine there will be many high milage petrol range rovers out there (in the uk at least) as 95% of high milage range rovers will be ex company cars, which will predominantly be diesel
I Just bought a 2016 td6 with 50k miles. 😬 I made sure to add the extended warranty though. We’ll see how it goes.
mine was 2017 SDV6 Range Rover Sport 64000 miles Your also looking at £10k + for an engine replacement

Good dam info rover bro.....I myself have a 2015....and this is my 3rd one.....but the l405 is the best thus far until...I got the dreaded coolant problem replaced everything.....and a week later the auxiliary battery 🔋 ofcoarse had the main battery, alternator....check everything was good.....the entire dash lit up light a Christmas 🎄....and most independent rover dealers is swamped with rovers...so don't have the man power to examine the problem.....ROVER LIFE💸💸💸💸

Oh dear "injectors over fuelling"?
@@NicholasWarnertheFirst It is what I have been told. I have also learned since posting. LR know about this problem - and in some cases - and they choose which - have offered 50% of the engine replacement -this decision will be based on loyalty (well they have lost mine now) age, mileage, and is 100% dependent on a full main dealer service history (as if that would have prevented the problem and mine doesn't) Anyway moving on I found a back st garage in Essex, 150 miles from me run by a couple of Bulgarians who will do it for 6,500 cash no questions asked.....so it's there now probably having a warm engine fitted - but hey ho no choice - either I will never see the car again - or they will do a super job and of course even if they get it all running I will sell it immediately upon its return!!!!

Awesome review bro. 👏🏽 👊🏽
Great video, looking to buy one soon 👌
Vehicles should have a toggle to “hide” mileage from prying passengers and friends. As a passenger, Just enjoy the ride and shut-up and don’t ask questions about how old the car is. It just ruins the joy from someone who’s just bought the car when they have to explain it’s high mileage. I find it very annoying when you buy a car and you get a thousand questions about it and details on how much it was and how much is the mileage.
Very true all cars have problems not just Range Roover , and it doesn’t matter who You buy it from expect to get screwed at some point. Drive until you can’t drive it no more and then do what you Gotta do to get another one something else or fix.
These are still known to have bad oil pumps in the V6 PSA units.
These Range Rovers are in general POS.

Sorry, the Ford PSA soured 3.0 V6 diesel engine is a ticking time bomb due to the crankshaft bearings likelihood of spinning, resulting in oil starvation and inevitable crankshaft breakage. Go the 4.4 TDV8 and walk away from the 3.0 TDV6. The fierce depreciation is a reflection of why you should not buy a Range Rover without new car factory warranty. The aftermarket warranties may not be worth the paper they are written on.
Great video 👍🏼
What's your views on remapping a 2017 3.0 litre Vogue like the one in your video? Great video BTW
I tried a 2014 Range Rover Sport 4.4 Diesel today. I was very disappointed. It doesn’t compare to my 2008 Range Rover Sport 4.4 petrol. Both power and handling didn’t get close to my 2008. Is there possibly something wrong with the one I tried today?
I would definitely go and try another example and please let us know how that compares 👍
Something wrong with that RRS if the TDV8 4.4 litre doesn't outperform the BMW 4.4 petrol V8 by a substantial difference. The TDV8 is a fantastic motor and the BMW 4.4 doesn't hold a candle to it, when it comes to both power output and fuel economy. There is simply prodigious amounts of acceleration and great mileage from the 4.4 TDV8, all day, every day.
4:12 says it all ..
Nice vid.
But as soon as people start saying
I done that instead of I did that

What a great video. You provide precisely the kind of advice that someone new and inexperienced (like myself) is probably craving, so thanks for that. I'm on the verge of treating myself to a Sport HSE Dynamic or Sport Autobiography Dynamic. What was that you were saying about the little fridge feature, because I quite liked that? Also, not sure I'd have the experience to take them for test drives and spot little noises (9:15). #justbeinghonest.

Do they have same 3.0 engine as discovery 4? If so then what about the crankshaft breaking problem? Those motors potentially horrendous.
Question?? 3.0 or 4.4?? I'm happy with. diesels
3.0 is sufficient, doesn’t feel underpowered at all.
Buying ANY Range Rover is risky - no one looks cool at the side of the road.
I noticed the moonroof doesn't have a support bar running through the middle of it. It appears the US versions do. I haven't attributed the difference to just the trim levels so I wonder if it's a UK vs US thing.
Short answer No you shouldn't

How much would you pay for something like this, or rather, how much should you pay ?
Ps. I’m not so sure that is high mileage all things considered.

Yes, Range Rovers are bad once they get over 80,000 miles. Major issue is the Head Gasket cracks or leaks. Cost to repair ?? 5,000 @ a Range Rovers dealer 7-8000. From the years 2015 - 2018 V6 are the worst.
Rhetorical question I assume. Of course its risky.

It really is preference, the sport is still very spacious but you get a more driver focused experience and you can enjoy it a bit more on a B road (not that it’s a track car lol). The Range Rover is more boaty, but personally I’m a big fan of the way it glides!
