I have the HX200. The viewfinder sensor was annoying at first, but then I found out that it was a blessing once I got used to it. Its really a fine feature. The other thing is that the HX200 has a strap for the lens cap. Just turn your camera on, and it will just pop out and not worry looking for it all over the floor in a crowded place, because the HX300 has NOT this lens cap strap. Great comparison.
hi i may be late but would recommend canon sx50 than sony . canon has a 50x optical zoom with 4x digital zoom , so in total its 200. which means more distance . but sony has 50x optical and 2x digital which means 100 zoom . so canon is tha right choice
Got the HX200v from Amazon for $249, it's a one day sell only (July 31st)!!!!! The fact that the HX300 doesn't have GPS make it not suitable for my purpose as a scuba diver. I like to be able to know where I dive!
Great review! but lets not sugarcoat the stripping of features in the 300 like the LCD/VF proximity sensor and of course GPS. Having a similar battery for another Sony camera that I might not own is a lame excuse (not yours... Sony's!) for providing a battery that provides inferior use between charges (IMHO). In fact you gotta love Sony for taking features away that previous models had, just to "re" introduce them in a newer model. My HX200V has both the LCD viewfinder/LCD proximity sensor as well as GPS Tagging. Along comes the HX300, minus both of those features, and then the HX400V with "new" features... the LCD viewfinder/LCD proximity sensor as well as GPS Tagging. They are usually working on two models ahead, so it's as if they said... "OK, look, we'll add a 50X zoom to the 300, but there won't be much more for the 400, so lets do this... lets strip the 300 of the LCD viewfinder/LCD proximity sensor as well as GPS Tagging so we can "re" introduce these "features" in the 400, and those sorry suckers will have to upgrade cameras again!" Sure the 400V has some new features over the 200V including the multi-purpose hot shoe (and others), but bringing back the features of the 200V tells me they should not have left the 300 at all. Great marketing plan for Sony while leaving a bit of a bitterness in my mouth. Since I'm adding this comment long after your review, we see in the 400V these previous features have returned... like looking into the future. Thanks for letting me vent!
Crap... Get 2 genuine Sony batteries. They are dirt cheap. I have 2 super zooms. The Canon SX 50 and HX300. And 5 more DSLR cams. I have 5 batteries for each. It is worth the money. Especially if you are out on Big Bear or Grand Canyon for 1-2-3 days... For hiking I bring my 2 super zooms and my 5D MK3 and 1DX. For some hikes you DON'T want to bring the $10K equipment, or you just can't. Anyway, in daylight scenarios the super zooms are almost as good as top DSLR cams, but with less options and functions. But for a raw point and shoot experience for remembering a trip, they are more than enough.
Thanks bro.. I guess i´ll stick with the hx200v , But the hx300 looks so good...And 50x , damm thats great!!!
thank you great review,,,,i am a novice and you convinced me the hx 200 will do me fine...keep up the great work.
Great review! Just bought the 200 as the auto viewfinder is really important to me. January 2024
Thanks Friend for the Review. the 200v, stabilizer, zoom video quality is better....

hello, what filter size will fit in to the hx300 without any adaper: 49,52,55,58,62,67mm ...?
Thanks !
Just filters for zoom 300 cameras. Nor interchangeable lenses for the 200 and 300.
HX200V $182 (equivalent) at Tesco in Thailand. They are clearing this obsolete model now :-)
I have the hx200v but lost my charger and have no clue what kind I need. Help!!!
James: Just loo for it at any Radio Shack shop. Sony will never provide it that easy. Greetings from Mexico.
If anyone finds a site with a decent price for the HX200V, please share...
I would go with the hx200 cause it's smaller and easier to handle
