Clear image zoom enlarges the image without much quality degradation and the resolution is still the same whereas digital zoom reduces picture quality quite a lot in favor of a more close up picture.
I just picked up my HX200V about a month ago and have not regretting picking up this beauty. I took it on a 4 day/3 night backpacking trip to Kauai and it definitely was able to capture some amazing shots! Especially when a zoom was desired, this camera definitely delivered clear pictures even utilizing the optical zoom. Even taking night shots turned out great, you can check out the results by typing in Kalalau and HOT Hikers in the RUclips search. Happy shooting!
In january 2012, I bought the HX200... and man..!! Its awesome. The zoom, and all the gadgets in this camera...wow..!! - And the best of all, when you playback your recordings on a HD TV. Its just great.... It seems that you are looking through a window with clean glass.
I took a look at the moon test. Its similar to the performance I was getting and the focus is pretty fast from when I tried it out. Perhaps one or two of the settings weren't in the best mode when you were testing it out.
Good review I just bought the camera for my wife and we love it so far. The points you make a valid and helped me a make a more educated decision. Thanks for the review and in depth look at the camera
There is no dedicated macro button but it can do macro shots as close as 1cm. You can select this mode in the SCN selection or just use the auto button for the camera to automatically select this mode.
Sorry for the late reply. If you have it set to manual you can just the shutter speed by turning the jog dial at the right hand top corner. If you want to move on to the next setting press the jog dial to move on to the next setting you want to adjust.
Definitely! Its a good all rounder camera with good macro capabilities of 1cm and has some helpful guides built into the camera to help you with your shooting style.
Just bought this camera but won't get it for 3 days. After comparing the HX300 and HX200 I went with the 200. I'm excited to use it this summer. Thanks for the video of both cameras. It was very helpful. Looking forward to more of your videos.
Hi sorry for the late reply, it performs decently and there are a few modes that help with low light photos like handheld twilight and multi frame noise reduction.
The SX50 is a new camera that I don't have any experience on but the 50x optical zoom seems very appealing compared to the 30x optical zoom that the HX200 offers. My advice is to try them both in store and see which one you prefer more.
With an eye-fi card, you have to pair it with your camera or tablet or laptop. Not exactly sure how it works since I don't have one but it is compatible with this camera.
Thanks for the review, something im trying to find out is the quality of pictures taken while doing a video, im no professional photographer, but i know when trying to capture stills from a video with a capture card, the quality of the stills were awful, im assuming this feature works much better :) and does it leave a pause, black frame or any evidence of a still being taken on the video recording, thanks if you can answer this for me :)
Probably the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 but if you're not in a rush, it might be a good idea to wait for a month or so to check out the new models camera manufacturers are bringing out.
If you were looking at the HX200 I would say you would need to record the sound separately and combine the two in post. Otherwise, if you were on a budget, the a37 and a58 would work fine for interviews since they have a mic input.
Plug the camera into the computer without the memory card. Make sure your USB connection (you can find this in the menu) is set to mass storage. Let me know if you have any problems with that.
An enjoyable and informative review. Thankyou. It seems to me that Sony bridge/travel cameras in the past seem to lack both raw, and a way to add a lens filter for protection. I dont mind missing out raw, as I find I can get the shot I want from the jpeg. I would prefer to have some sort of thread for a filter, though. Does this particular model camera allow for a protective filter to be added, John ?
Press the drive button which is on the left of the direction pad. Press enter and select continuous shooting. However, it shouldn't be hunting for focus.
I am standing between two types of cameras. The first is the sony hx200 because i love the way that sony cameras works (i had the h-20) and the second is to upgrade to slr camera as the Nikon d3200.. The only i need is to have the opportunity to use as much i can the manual settings and shot really good night landscapes. What is your opinion?? Thanks
You can download the manual by going to the sony website. Type in your camera in the search bar. Go to support and you will be able to get it from there.
Sorry. I meant there is a bit of lag. There is a proximity viewfinder that switches from the LCD to the viewfinder. From memory, there was no external charger.
It goes up to 60x with clear image zoom. Its not the equivalent to optical zoom but it does a very good job. Its more of an improved version of digital zoom. Its hard to tell the difference between optical and clear image zoom.
Yes. Its a good all rounder camera so you don't have the hassle of changing lenses and has some really good macro capabilities. In Australia, its $599 but I can imagine other countries will have a different pricing.
great review, easy to undertsand (y)... im thinking if i must buy this camera, so? do you recommend me to buy it the camera?, i mean, what percent of satisfaction dou you think this camera going to offer in general for a person who is a beginner like me? thanks
Q1. I would say the HX20 for its compactness but the HX200 has more features such as the tilting LCD screen, electronic viewfinder and a few more controls. 2. Both models can focus on a subject but you will get more of a blurry background with the HX200.
Apologies for the late reply. Press the menu button. Scroll down to a toolbox shaped icon. It will take you to settings. Scroll down to GPS setting and there will be an option to turn your GPS on.
Yes it can connect to a tripod. If you're shooting for a vlog in your room or outdoors, then I would suggest using a tripod. Its just easier but if you're doing a vlog walking around, then this is still a good choice because the stabilization works very well.
Thanks John for your support, but i have few more doubts on this topic, u have mentioned in the video review of HX200 that there is a delay between switching to optical view finder, so dose it effects photography, and how is this camera with fast moving objects? and can u please share a review of this camera at night that will be the helpful for me...
Hi, feature wise Sony DSC-hx200v is looking awesome. but i have a doubt on the its performance in night... how is the performance of the Sony product in night?
Doesn't it have a macro button? I'm thinking of buying this camera, but I REALLY like macro photography, so I need that to be good. The lack of button kind of worries me... how do you use macro with this camera, then? Thanks!
Will you be able to get the new HX300v soon for testing? Wondering if the HX300v with new IS will be as good as the Panasonic FZ200 at constant F2.8 - but only 600mm vs the Sony HX300v at 1200mm at F6.3 - I would love the extra 600mm but really worry about shakiness at 12mm at F6.3 - what is your take ? I would expect the Sony to have a better viewfinder than the Panasonic.
If you plan on filming, the Canon 550D will offer more in terms of quality and creativity since you can change lenses and add external mics. Might I also suggest the Sony a57 as it is on the same level.
Great video! I got the Sony DSC-HX200V camera a little while ago and I really like it. But I need a remote for it! Wireless or wired, I don't care. I don't even know if you can get a remote for it. Do you know if and how I can get a device that I can take a picture on the camera without touching it?
You can change the shutter speed by selecting S on the mode dial. Use the jog dial on the back of the camera to change the shutter speed. I think you can go to 1/4000sec. As for smoke, use a dark background and use a pop up flash to illuminate the smoke. You would call this a bridge camera or a superzoom camera.
I have this Sony camera and it's incredible. I figured everything out in about 3 days. The pics are crisp and clean. I originally wanted the Nikon p510 but a sales rep told me about the 200v and it is much better.
now the 300v is almost out - how would you rate the sensor compared to the Sony RX100 ? is there a large difference in IQ ? - love that the 300v has 50x zoom but it is bulky so the very nice and small new WX300 might be my new addition - only 20x but I would like to add reach for some occasions beyond what my Sony RX100 can do - but I love the RX100 - also considering Fuji X20 as it has that bright lens - But will keep my RX100 as well - and NEX7 and NEX5n :) - but I am concerned about sensor
thanks for the video, which is better ? Q1: Sony DSC-HX200V or Sony Cybershot DSC-HX20 ? Q2: which one of them has focus on object and blury background in (Video mode) ?
RAW is a type of file like JPEG. RAW is like a digital negative, unprocessed and is a larger file size. If you plan to edit your photos, RAW shooting is the file type you want to be shooting in as it doesn't degrade the quality of your photo unlike JPEG.
In a way yes but if you think its too expensive you can always get the HX100 which is last year's model and they have similar features and the body is exactly the same.

I am not too sure on how true that is, but the logic makes sense. From my experience I don't notice any more issues with lens zoom/motor issues with regular point and shoots that have 5x optical zoom than with those that have well over 20x optical zoom. I can only imagine the motor begins to slow down over time, but I see that issue with all zoom lengths. EX: Lens takes longer to come out with turned on. (see this a lot on old P&S). Hope that helps.
bro ! i am planning to take a camera soon but getting stuck in deciding which one to go for ! the cannon 550 D OR sony hx200v my main purpose is for short film making ! please suggestion the best one in your point of view ! thank u ! :)

So i'm requesting you to ensure that size and inform me..which type adapter ring to use means step up or reversable or simple .
Panasonic just released a super zoom camera in the bridge camera category, that provides f2.8 even when zoomed all the way. Would like to see Sony release something like that. In terms of very similar capability, I like (and own) the Sony HX30V. Not quite as much zoom, but enough. Only thing I'd like to gain though HX200 would be the EVF and variable position live screen.
The main differences are, the HX100v has a 16 megapixel sensor and the HX200v has an 18megapixel sensor with faster autofocus plus picture effects, clear image zoom and better battery life

I just got mine! Loving it so far. I purchased it for the video quality. I have the HX9V and love Sony's HD quality.
That is impressive. Hoping there will be more of an updated version next year.
In january 2012, I bought the HX200... and man..!! Its awesome. The zoom, and all the gadgets in this camera...wow..!! - And the best of all, when you playback your recordings on a HD TV. Its just great.... It seems that you are looking through a window with clean glass.
This video was filmed with the a77 but there is a short clip in this video filmed with the HX200.

On the side of the lens there is a switch for you to change it from zoom to manual focus.
Yeah I took a really brief look at the HX100 in the beginning of the video but thanks for the feedback.
I own this camera, and I love it, but can you explain the relationship between the clear image zoom, and the digital zoom?
i want to buy it for short films in FULL HD and special effects, does it has external mic?
Sorry for the late reply. If you have it set to manual you can just the shutter speed by turning the jog dial at the right hand top corner. If you want to move on to the next setting press the jog dial to move on to the next setting you want to adjust.
Sony doesn't make any filter adapter rings for the HX200 but there are some third party ones that you can buy online.
Definitely! Its a good all rounder camera with good macro capabilities of 1cm and has some helpful guides built into the camera to help you with your shooting style.

That's interesting. Would it work with other flashes?
There is a rocker switch where the shutter button is that lets you zoom in and out.
Hi sorry for the late reply, it performs decently and there are a few modes that help with low light photos like handheld twilight and multi frame noise reduction.
just got mine last week and did a unboxing. i got to say i love it!!!

I'll have to get back to you on that question. I don't have the camera with me at the moment. Stay tuned!

I brought this recently iot is an amazing camera
Probably the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 but if you're not in a rush, it might be a good idea to wait for a month or so to check out the new models camera manufacturers are bringing out.
Australia!!! thanks for this lovely review - has helped me decide to purchase this camera.

Do you mean the 24-70mm? It'll be hard to get the Sigma lens
Plug the camera into the computer without the memory card. Make sure your USB connection (you can find this in the menu) is set to mass storage. Let me know if you have any problems with that.

Since you said the camera is not good in low light situations, would you not recommend this camera for concerts?
It goes up to 60x with clear image zoom. Its not the equivalent to optical zoom but it does a very good job. Its more of an improved version of digital zoom. Its hard to tell the difference between optical and clear image zoom.

Good review! Keep 'em coming!
I'm also excited about the new Sony products that are to be announced in about 12 hours (like the A99)!
have you got your review up :)
Thanks John for your support, but i have few more doubts on this topic, u have mentioned in the video review of HX200 that there is a delay between switching to optical view finder, so dose it effects photography, and how is this camera with fast moving objects? and can u please share a review of this camera at night that will be the helpful for me...
Hi,
feature wise Sony DSC-hx200v is looking awesome.
but i have a doubt on the its performance in night...
how is the performance of the Sony product in night?
I'm an amateur and looking for a good bridge camera. Would you reccomend this Sony? Thanks!
does it do a good job when you capture a portrait picture and blur the back of the person ?
Doesn't it have a macro button? I'm thinking of buying this camera, but I REALLY like macro photography, so I need that to be good. The lack of button kind of worries me... how do you use macro with this camera, then?
Thanks!
Hi John,
Is the clear image zoom in sony equivalent to optical zoom? If yes, how much does the optical zoom increase from 30x? Thanks
Thanks! And between p510 and hx200v which one would you suggest?

hello !! can i use the external mic on HX200 ??
Select P on the mode dial. Press the menu button and scroll down to color mode. There will be an option to use black and white.
If you plan on filming, the Canon 550D will offer more in terms of quality and creativity since you can change lenses and add external mics. Might I also suggest the Sony a57 as it is on the same level.
Unfortunately there is no filter thread on the lens for you to attach a filter.
I found your video really helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Great video!
I got the Sony DSC-HX200V camera a little while ago and I really like it.
But I need a remote for it! Wireless or wired, I don't care. I don't even know if you can get a remote for it. Do you know if and how I can get a device that I can take a picture on the camera without touching it?

Can you tell me how to set/lock the exposure for "movie mode"?
Can you hear the camera zoom in while filming video? Thanks!
which kind of camera did you use to make this video? the sony?
I don't have any tutorials on this camera specifically but if you have any questions on it I'll try and help you out with it.
now the 300v is almost out - how would you rate the sensor compared to the Sony RX100 ? is there a large difference in IQ ? - love that the 300v has 50x zoom but it is bulky so the very nice and small new WX300 might be my new addition - only 20x but I would like to add reach for some occasions beyond what my Sony RX100 can do - but I love the RX100 - also considering Fuji X20 as it has that bright lens - But will keep my RX100 as well - and NEX7 and NEX5n :) - but I am concerned about sensor
I'm debating on this one or the canon powershot sx500 is. Which one's better?
I'm a amateur photographer so would you recommend this camera or a Nikon l810 bridge camera ? would really appreciate some help! thanks
i need help using it. i bought an open item with no manual. can youmake a video on using it?
Unfortunately, there is no remote for it. You can only set a timer for when to take a photo.
Would be nice to see a Sony Wide Angle comparison, like 21-70 VS 16-35 or the sigma 10-24
thanks for the video,
which is better ?
Q1: Sony DSC-HX200V or Sony Cybershot DSC-HX20 ?
Q2: which one of them has focus on object and blury background in (Video mode) ?
To be honest I haven't played with the Canon camera but its specs look very impressive especially its zoom.
I would probably include the HX300 into your choices which is the replacement of the HX200. Definitely go with the HX300.
RAW is a type of file like JPEG. RAW is like a digital negative, unprocessed and is a larger file size. If you plan to edit your photos, RAW shooting is the file type you want to be shooting in as it doesn't degrade the quality of your photo unlike JPEG.
Hi, do you know how to set the manual functions if I want to do light painting with this camera? thanks!
Would you recommend it over the canon sx50hs?
In a way yes but if you think its too expensive you can always get the HX100 which is last year's model and they have similar features and the body is exactly the same.
hey John...i need help. Do you think this camera or the newer Canon Powershot SX50HS is a better camera? I'm looking for something that I can have fun with , have outstanding photo quality, playful and try focusing and blurring the backgrounds, etc. I do like the partial color effects the Sony has. Which do you think is better overall?
Thanks
I am not too sure on how true that is, but the logic makes sense. From my experience I don't notice any more issues with lens zoom/motor issues with regular point and shoots that have 5x optical zoom than with those that have well over 20x optical zoom. I can only imagine the motor begins to slow down over time, but I see that issue with all zoom lengths. EX: Lens takes longer to come out with turned on. (see this a lot on old P&S). Hope that helps.
can we change the lenses or is it just a built in lens?
does the hx200v take good landscape shots?
bro ! i am planning to take a camera soon but getting stuck in deciding which one to go for !
the cannon 550 D OR sony hx200v
my main purpose is for short film making ! please suggestion the best one in your point of view ! thank u ! :)
What is rural capture? Thanks
Hi john.. i need your help as soon as possible u can.. i m confused with Sony HX200v and Sony Alfa A37 (DSLR)..please suggest me for which model i should go....
Thanks....before somedays ago i tried a third party adapter ring whoose diameter was 58mm purchased from ebay.in , but it was unfitted to my hx 200v cause it was huge in size of that ring being 58mm. Later i measured the diameter of the lens's face myself by scale and it was 4.8cm . So i'm requesting you to ensure that size and inform me..which type adapter ring to use means step up or reversable or simple .
Hey, Hi m thinking about this cam but confused between sx50 what would you recommend?
Panasonic just released a super zoom camera in the bridge camera category, that provides f2.8 even when zoomed all the way. Would like to see Sony release something like that. In terms of very similar capability, I like (and own) the Sony HX30V. Not quite as much zoom, but enough. Only thing I'd like to gain though HX200 would be the EVF and variable position live screen.
The camera will shutdown automatically after a period of time if you leave it. This setting can be adjusted in the menu.
Thanks for your video. I just purchased my camera today.
The main differences are, the HX100v has a 16 megapixel sensor and the HX200v has an 18megapixel sensor with faster autofocus plus picture effects, clear image zoom and better battery life
I'm excited too! Not too long to go now =.D
well i am bit confused over hx200v and nikon P510 ... main concern being processing time and image colour reproduction and sharpness !!
Is it the best camera to buy for a newbie n does it has a burst mode feature ?
Sorry if somebody has asked you this before, but I want to know your opinion, which one is better: FZ200 or HX200V?. I know HX200V has a larger zoom but FZ200 has a hotshoe and plug for an external mic. What is better when it comes to image quality, stabilization, low light performance and noise reduction?. Thanks a lot, I will appreciate your help.
when taking photos whats the rate it will take them at. i am after a point and shoot (what i mean is how long does it take till i can take another photo )
Ok ta, we go to the cook islands next May & i want to get a new camera & a new underwater camera, im considering the Canon D20 if i can find out if the anti fog lens really doesnt fog, lost 74% our pics from Thailand not realizing in the bright sun there was a light fog right away :( i love the canon sx50 zoom, but i dont like its photos showing up in its video, seems the panasonic lumix fz150/fz200 dont show photos in videos either, decisions decisions, im guessing price will play a factor here
