    My Tenrec disappeared just before winter and then suddenly re-appeared in spring this year. He was so thirsty and hungry. Just glad he's back

    Tenrecs are so fascinating, thank you for this video!
    Could you show a video of Finn wandering about his cage? I've watched Chai (my african pygmy hedgehog) in her cage but would love to see a tenrec wandering about! :)

      ChaiHedgehog I can try at some point! He is nocturnal and tends to hide if there are any lights.

    I love your videos! I never commented but I've been following them for a while, you have fantastic care for all your animals it amazes me to see someone with such passion and love for them! I also appreciate you being honest in telling people that you don't know everything about Tenrecs but you're so open to learning more and being able to teach people everything you do know.
    I personally wouldn't ever get a hedgehog, tenrec, or guinea pig because I find they aren't the right pets for me BUT I still love learning more about them and I enjoy and appreciate others through videos like yours :)

    One question about tenrecs: the reason I never got a Jeffie is because of what my mom likes to call "poop boots" where the poop builds up on their feet and you have to wash it off. I personally did not have a problem with cleaning it but the rest of my family is very squeamish and against poop lol but anyways, you mentioned that tenrecs clean themselves, do you still have to wash the poop off of their feet or is that not an issue?

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  7 лет назад +2

      +Madison Stone It isn't an issue usually! The only time I've ever noticed anything on Finn's feet is if his wheel isn't cleaned one night and he runs in poop. By the next night he has cleaned it off his feet in his sand bath :)

    He is the cutest little thing I’ve ever seen. I’m not really prepared to have another reptile-like animal that requires reptile-like care so I probably won’t ever have one, or if I do I’ll be in my 40s. But they’re so interesting to see and learn about. It just makes me so sad when my animals go into a hibernation.

  • @HappyPotatoTeam
    @HappyPotatoTeam 7 лет назад +1

    So cute! is he always that chill in your hand? my tenrec is so cute but he just runs, or sleeps. Nothing in between.
    I have a couple of questions:
    1. Do we need to worry that he doesnt seem to eat AT ALL right now (torpor)? before he would wake up when he smelled food but not anymore.
    2. Bonding tips for new owners of adult tennie (specially during torpor)?
    3. Should I wake him up every other night or so, to bond, or let him sleep for months?
    4. How do I get him to sit that calm in my hands and trust us...? He doesnt like to be held and we so long to hold him.
    Thank you.

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  7 лет назад

      Yeah, he's always fairly chill, but that is just his personality (: How old is your tenrec? That'd help me with your questions more, but I'll try my best!
      1. It is generally normal, yes. Some go the entire time with no food. I'd add calcium to his water to be sure he is getting some extra nutrition because they do occasionally still drink.
      2. During torpor, bonding really should just consist of cuddling. They'll pretty much sleep all the time, and it isn't great to keep they awake when they don't want to be awake, so letting him sleep on you would be beneficial.
      3. You can get him out to hang out, but try not to deliberately awaken him for extended periods of time during torpor. I just get Finn out and let him sleep on me. He gets the benefit of spending time with me, but I'm not disturbing his sleep much.
      4. That should come with time. You won't find much real bonding taking place right now, since he is in torpor. You'll have to start the actual bonding process when he's awake in the spring. You can try a bonding pouch as well, that may help. Some tenrecs are not as social as other and take time and handling to get there. :)

    • @HappyPotatoTeam
      @HappyPotatoTeam 7 лет назад

      PugPibbleHedgie
      Thank you so much for answering :)))
      He is 1,5 years old according to the former owner. I introduced him to his bonding pouch today and he was a little suspicious but now sleeps happily in it :)
      I have noticed that if he feels us breathe close to him (like if we look into his pouch or hide) he starts to "hiss". Does it perhaps scare him that some large creature (me, lol) is so close? I thought he would recognize us by now, that we feed and pet him and not be so scared or irritated if we get close (dont know if he is angry or scared when he hisses).
      I so hope he will come around and become comfortable with us. He is increadibly cute, we so long to be able to chill with him like you do with Finn:)
      I've really been wondering something: How aware are tenrecs of their owners?like...do they recognize us, like a dog, cat or hamster does…? Do they LIKE being cuddled with in general, or just tolerate it?
      Very thankful for your support :)

    I got a hedgehog the other day, and he is extremely shy and timid. He hisses and begins to curl up if we try to touch him. His first owner had gotten ill and could no longer care for him, so his nails are really long and hes pretty dirty... I want to clip them and give him a bath but he just gets so scared. I've been trying to bond with him/give him time , but does anyone have any advice?

    • @Broskiiiiiiiiiiii
      @Broskiiiiiiiiiiii 7 лет назад +2

      Anna Lamperti as long as his nails aren't causing him discomfort I'd say it'd be ok to leave them for a day or two in order to bond more but sooner or later he definitely needs to get a bath and his nails clipped even if he's difficult

    I was under the impression that tenrecs had high-ish humidity requirements? I've been considering keeping them in a bio-active setup, similar to a gecko setup, with large cork bark options, and isopods to eat, and also clean up their poop!
    I've been building and keeping reptiles on enclosures like this for years, and this is a mammal that seems to be an outstanding candidate for this. O_O

    • @noraraeafm

      Hamsters would be great for a bioactive as well, believe it or not. They thrive in naturalistic enclosures and love buggy snacks 😁

    I have been watching your videos for a while and have been wanting a hedgehog but I am waiting for the right time . I am 14 so my parents would like it to be not to difficult to care for , especially for when we go on holiday and have someone take care of it. I was just wondering, out of a tenrec or hedgehog which would be cheaper in the long run , and easier to care for?

    • @ToriLynnPPH
      @ToriLynnPPH  7 лет назад

    • @ToriLynnPPH

    I won't be getting a tenrec anytime, don't have a huge interest in owning one (maybe in the future lol) But I was wondering if they could live in an Alexander hamster cage? I was looking over at my hamsters cage, and wondering this, as its a large cage and has the right bar spacing. Plus, Finn seems to be just a little bigger than a syrian. Slightly strange question haha, but now I really want to know.

    • @ToriLynnPPH

    Hi tori I’m the girl who needed to know about the hedgehog heating pad situation also I can’t thank you enough for that reply I just wanted to let you know that I went to a local exotic pet shop called house of pets to look at the hedgehogs because I was interested in buying one and I found myself leaning more towards tenrecs and I had know idea which one I like better I’ve handle both of them recently and I feel like tenrecs are more relaxed and more cuddly as you said in some of your previous videos so in two weeks I’m buying a baby tenrec that I’ve been keeping my eye on and handling at the pet store and I was wondering if we could set up like some sort of communication because I trust you and the way you treat your animals and if there were something to go wrong I would like to ask for suggestions of something from you if that’s not to much trouble just let me know and I’ll keep you updated on how my baby is doing and I’ll keep watching your videos for more helpful tips thank you so much tori💛💛💛

I've tried mealworms, crickets, raw and cooked chickenmeat, pork, banana...almost anything that I come across on the internet that people say is safe and that their tennys LIKE.
