Im so excited to watch this video, i’ve been dreaming about getting a tenrec ever since I held one when I visited a wildlife education center and it fell asleep in my hands and tried to crawl up my sleeve. I think i cried a bit it was so cute ;-;
I’ve kept Guinea pigs and although they lived quite long (6+ years) I would love to have a longer lived mammal in my care. The torpor is honestly quite scary sounding though. Thats the only reason I might think they wouldn’t be the right pet for me. I get very stressed when my pets don’t act as they usually do, I am a big worrier. Maybe I could see if I could look at the tenrec the wildlife education center had when its in torpor first to get a feel for what it is like when its healthy? I don’t mind a creature that sleeps most of the time, and im also pretty much nocturnal so we’d get along well in that regard. I love these little guys, probably going to get one a little while after I move so it doesn’t have to deal with the stress of moving. And to make sure i have a stable income in my new place to care for it but otherwise, yeah definitely getting one when I have the proper amount of accommodations for it to thrive. :)
It's interesting that they recommend a DHP vs a halogen or incandescent basking bulb because it's "more infrared that goes all the way through them" when a halogen or incandescent bulb actually produces more infrared A and a DHP produces mostly infrared C and some B, which isn't going to penetrate as deeply into the tissue as infrared A would. You make a good point that the DHP can be used at night as well, when the animal is most active and could actually utilize the heat, but it seems like they might have a slight misunderstanding of the different types of lighting options and the quality of heat that they provide.
Halogens and other incandescents are a great option for daylight hours! In hedgehog/tenrec keeping it's more common to have the same non-visible-light heat source for both day and night which is why we suggest a DHP as a preferred option over a CHE for heat around the clock.
I realised I've been down the reptile rabbit hole for a while when I read the title and my first thought was "Oh neat! Why would anyone want a mammal for a pet, though?"
oh hedgehog poopie paws, my little vlad the impaler was a foot bath guru. granted he loved the semi warm water, he vibes out when I washed his paws. That little man went everywhere with me. Had him for almost 10 years. Grandpa hedgehog! I want a lesser tenrec so bad, I love the idea of having a prickly companion by my side for many years.
My living room has an ambient temperature of about 21-24 in the day and about 18-20 during the night. Would they still need heating? That sounds pretty close to what you say they need. I know it's a bit lower at night, but surely it's natural for them to be a bit cooler at night.
I have had both i do think if you want a pet you can play with and handle with a tenrec is just so much better but please just make sure its enclosure is 100% escape proof if not thay will find a way to escape (tenrecs are basically just parkour hedgehogs)
Hi @ClintsReptiles love your content, is there any chance that your would do a pet review on Gerbils; my younger sister is really keen on them but I would love to hear your opinion on them 😊.
Me: Oh boy! A more handleable and cleaner version of a hedgehog! Could this be the best pet for me?! “They hibernate for 4 to 6 months of the year.” Me: ……..OH COME ON!!!!
On top of not having to go to work (usually), the thing I look forward to the most are Clint's Reptiles videos! I'm not an animal mom (I'm a plant mom) so I don't keep up pet products. Im so excited to watch this video, i’ve been dreaming about getting a tenrec ever since I held one when I visited a wildlife education center and it fell asleep in my hands and tried to crawl up my sleeve. I think i cried a bit it was so cute ;-;
:)
Real question, do they shoot out gold rings when they get hit?
These are cute! Prolly won't get one, but they cute
The thumbnail looks like a felted plushie
😂 That would be HILARIOUS if Clint did a video on Stuffed Plushie - best imaginary pet?
The tenrec is so cute 🥹❤
Tenrecs! 🤩
👏 Class is now in session!
I realised I've been down the reptile rabbit hole for a while when I read the title and my first thought was "Oh neat! Why would anyone want a mammal for a pet, though?"
Best Pet_____: The Best Clint's Reptiles series!
Never even heard of a Tenrec before, how interesting 🤔 ❤
YAY PET VIDEO
Tenrecs are soooo cute 🥰
oh hedgehog poopie paws, my little vlad the impaler was a foot bath guru. granted he loved the semi warm water, he vibes out when I washed his paws.
Initial reaction: awww so cute… will update after I watch lol
I want to have a sand/dust bath! (We are under water restrictions here in Calgary in two days.)
“They hibernate for 4 to 6 months of the year.”
Me: ……..OH COME ON!!!!
I like that guy’s voice.
That animated clip reminded me a lot of the hippo noodles song.
On top of not having to go to work (usually), the thing I look forward to the most are Clint's Reptiles videos!
I'm not an animal mom (I'm a plant mom) so I don't keep up pet products. With calcium deficiency being such an issue for many animals, are there ways other than dusting to increase calcium on feeder insects?
I’m sold.
