Although this was Dean Martin's first time on The Tonight Show and Jerry Lewis's first time on the tonight show, this was Martin and Lewis first and only time on the show a year before their breakup!!! Also, this was two days before their last show of the Colgate comedy/variety hour!!!Thanks for the clip, man!!! Keep it up!!!

That's incredible natural talent, to sing pretty well pitch perfect with the audio technology of of the time on oppisite coasts. I will say until I die if Dean would have put into his musical career the same production work that Sinatra did, there may not have been a Sinatra after 1956.

There is some tension here which is sad to see, after so many years of incredible chemistry and affection, but you still get glimmers of the bond and this was a lot of fun to watch. Jerry seemed to be trying to create it a bit more than Dean. (No judgement, just observing). That "dirty pictures" joke will never get old to me :'''D I've been watching a lot of their performances, and what I love is that some of the routines remind me of how it is when you listen to your favorite songs over and over again, or see your favorite bands live; you know the lyrics, the melody, (the punchlines) but it always gives you a thrill because it just works so well.

Dean seemed like he would rather be somewhere else than appearing on 'The Tonight Show' with Jerry. One can see the tension between both men. The best thing that happened was both of them going their separate ways.

You can really see the tension between them, as you could when their last show aired a couple of nights later. They barely make eye contact and Dean seems very uncomfortable. And yet all the great timing and comic genius is still evident. And for Dean to sing, pitch perfect, with a band 3,000 miles away - that's not something you see too often. He does practically the same version of this song on his own show about 10 or so years later.
I wish they could have found a way to keep working together somehow, even sporadically, as they still would have been kings of the hill. There was no act better in show business than this one - perfectly blended, with both a lot of warmth and sheer hilarity, and they could both sing and dance beautifully. As singles, they were still great, but Dean fell into that drunk act and never had the same sincerity (or even the full, great use of his voice) and Jerry's clowning got broader and a lot less funny. They grounded each other as performers and they picked up from each other uncannily. When they both start singing, "Silent Night," here, as a gag, it's almost like they rehearsed it. Again, their timing is impeccable.
I wonder what ever really happened between them where they couldn't work together again. We've heard all the stories. But it happens with a lot of teams, bands, etc. It was magic while it lasted.

Matthew Gallagher a lot of factors were the cause of the demise of the team. Friends on both sides sayin they don’t need the other. Their wives never got along. Jerry getting all the credit in their work. Dean being relegated to the heel in their films and basically playing straight man to Jerry’s antics. He took that for 10 years. Jerry wanted to do more behind the scenes things. Dean wasn’t interested in that. It’s run it’s course. Dean needed to be his own man and not second fiddle to Jerry. The best thing that happened to Dean is when the team split. He was bigger than he ever was he conquered in 4 mediums: TV, records, nightclubs, and films. Jerry had a good solo run in films from ‘56-‘64 then the times changed and he was seen as an aging clown (to American audiences) who hosted MDA telethons every year. Then he made a comeback with “Hardly Working” and then “King of Comedy”. Their prime was ‘46 to ‘54. After that Dean was tired of it. I don’t blame him. I couldn’t take working with Jerry for 10mins let alone 10 years!

I have the feeling that Lewis' ego at that time might have been unbearable for DM, too much is too much. I can not judge but we can guess from the Lewis "personage" that he was acting and the huge fame the went through might have affect him. Dean was more a feet grounded personality. In love there's often a bit of hate and vice versa. When they've met again in 1976 Lewis asked Martin, "Uh, so, you workin'?" with sarcastic smile. We can imagine during their last argue, Lewis saying "You'll never be able to work without me.."
That's just what I am imagining. We'll never know and it's fine like this.

@@monsieurd. lol I know it’s 7 months but you just fit the stereotype of a dumb and unreasonable Dean Martin’s fan. “You workin?” is an inside joke between Martin and Lewis and it had no malicious nor sarcastic meaning like you’re propagating comment readers to believe. Jerry was just trying to initiate a conversation with Dean by bringing back something he said to Dean when they first met in the 40s.

For me, i actually like Jerry with Dean. However, i like Dean on his own. Artistically, they were both outgrowing each other. Jerry wanted to act, write, produce, direct, edit, etc. Dean wanted to be do more records, be seen as a serious actor, and be his own man and seen as a talented individual. It almost makes me sick to know, a guy and great talent like Dean Martin, could be associated
with a bufoon like Lewis. But totally makes sense, what Martin told him upon their breakup.
"When I ever look at you, all I see is dollar signs".

    • @Donazify
      @Donazify  2 года назад +8

Aww you don't feel well bubby? lol Be sick I guess, because without Jerry Lewis, even Dean Martin said he wouldn't have had a career, and it was all owed to Jerry. Jerry said the same thing vice versa. What makes me sick is people like you that praise one of the team, just to shit on the other. The team only worked because of the chemistry and love they had for each other. Deal with it dude. 1. Dean didn’t have to stay with Jerry at Jerry’s home for 2 months, when he left Jeanne for a short time in 1953, but he did.
      2. Dean didn’t have to be in Jerry’s home movie parodies, but he did.
      3. Dean didn’t have to stay with Jerry in Carmel at a place together, on yet another occasion where he left Jeanne, but he did. Jerry left his own wife at home, to be with Dean when he left Jeanne!
      4. They took vacations together that had nothing to do with touring!
      5. No matter what, whenever Dean or Jerry referred to each other after the split up they still called each other “my partner.”
6: There were instances of people saying derogatory remarks about Jerry, where Dean punched them in the face or shot back at them with sarcastic remarks at them depending on the situation. Dean always defended Jerry.
      7. When Dean signed with Capitol records, he specified that they sign Jerry too, or they wouldn’t have him. (I have an article confirming this)
      8. When Jerry had an accident and fell off the stage hurting his spine in 1952. Dean rushed to his side and wouldn’t let anyone touch Jerry. He carried him off the stage and into the ambulance. Dean actually cried and couldn’t go back on to complete the show. When the theatre manager demanded that Dean complete the show because of their contract, he told him off.
What does this all mean??? Dean loved Jerry, and was his friend! That is why he stuck with him. Also why would Dean in 1966 at the height of his solo career, even entertain the idea of getting back together with Jerry after they reunited at Sy Devore’s funeral. They literally discussed getting back together. Obviously Dean didn’t need the money at that point, so why would he want to get back with the person “who caused him so much aggravation.” Could it be that maybe he missed Jerry????
“In the beginning of our relationship, Jerry was just wonderful, and I was doing all the funny things that I had always wanted to do. I love to hear laughter, but I couldn’t get laughter just singing. Hearing a whole audience laugh is like getting drunk.“ - Dean Martin
“Our partnership in many ways is a marriage…. I dare say we’ve spent more time together than most married couples do.” - Dean Martin
“I don’t know where he is, but wherever he is, he must be doing just fine, because he has bundles of talent and he’s a wonderful guy.” Dean Martin’s comeback to a heckler saying ‘Where’s Jerry?’
“I’ve said we’ve been together almost a decade. Sometimes as a gag I say it seems more like 15 years. Actually it’s more like five. I trust him implicitly” - Dean Martin
“On the road for six years, while we were mainly doing nightclubs, we roomed together much of the time. We never had a difference of opinion we couldn’t resolve by ourselves and quickly. Indeed, until a bunch of outsiders got into the act, we never had an argument which wasn’t settled by sundown.” - Dean Martin
"When we shook hands on our partnership, I said in my heart, this is forever, ‘til death do us part. It still goes! Sometimes he makes mistakes. Sometimes I make mistakes. But as long as people let us alone, the team of Martin & Lewis will go on.” - Dean Martin
“It was Dean’s 72nd birthday and Jerry surprised him with a cake. It was a touching moment. Jerry walked out singing ‘Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. It’s me, the old Jew, happy birthday to you.’ The crowd went wild and Dean was clearly surprised and didn’t know what to say. In a turnabout from their 1976 reunion, he looked at Jerry and said ‘You’re all dressed up. You working?’ Jerry looked at the cake ‘We would have had 72 candles but with your breath, we’d have had another frickin’ fire.’
Dean said ‘You’re still the best in the whole world.“ Before the curtain closed, they embraced and Dean said "I love you, and I mean it."’
“Maria Lauren Alberici-Riccio (Golddigger, 1973 - 1991): Before the telethon reunion, Dean let us in on the private messages and jokes written with our lipstick that he had been leaving for Jerry Lewis via his dressing room mirror. Jerry played the MGM Grand and had left Dean some razzing but good humored remarks on the mirror prior to our engagement. Dean was like a little boy bragging about it to us, ‘Look at what I wrote to Jerry; look what ‘Crazy’ wrote to me. I answered him real good…’ He was so cute!”
"That zany screwball means a lot to me, and not only from a financial standpoint either. Any implication that my concern is based on money it utterly false. I happen to love the kid like a brother and hate to see him in pain. " - Dean Martin
