These guys were the greatest and fed off each other so easily. Their 10 years together were meant to be resulting in their huge success. Little did they know at the time when they broke up, they still remained at the top of their game apart. What unremarkable lives they had. Dean with years of Vegas, TV, movies, records and so handsome. He worked but made it look easy. Jerry had movies, Vegas, MDA . These guys needed to be together , then to be apart. RIP

They were made for each other. When they met they just clicked. They both found in the other what they both needed. The were truly remarkable

Jerry loved that man so much. I've been into them for about a year and I've read and researched everything. Every quote, everything anybody said about them. I've read biographies, you name it, I've read it and one thing I found out that I absolutely didn't know is that Dean Martin was absolutely obsessed with Jerry. I think he loved him more than Jerry loved him.

Kelly, I also am obsessed with these guys but mostly Dean, so very handsome. Ive read articles, books , watched his movies, listen to his music everyday. What a life they had amazing. Nothng like them today although as I look back on life they always were there with me as I am 75. Enjoy something you will never see again whether them being together or apart.

Lovely tribute. Everything Martin and Lewis related is bittersweet... and basically heartbreaking. If they had been allowed to split one year earlier, they would have been spared the bitter feelings. Thank goodness they made their peace later in life.

I feel like Martin was Lewis' father, mother, family, brother, lover (not literally), guardian, best friend and maybe for Dean Jerry was his kid brother whom he loved. So sad that they split like that and took 20 years to get back together. Why couldn't they have just had a professional separation without the emotional one. I do believe Dean Martin needed to find himself as an entertainer so it was a right move for him. But, it could've happened without all the bitterness. I guess for Jerry Lewis, dean was like his life, identity and world such that he wanted to control all aspects of him professionally. It ultimately stemmed from Jerry Lewis' hurts from his childhood to be honest. well i'm glad they made up before they both died. Thank God for Frank Sinatra. LOL.

deb I'm glad that someone else saw that about Jerry. I've watched a lot of videos if the two of them both working together, and also many interviews, since I discovered You tube and I came to the same conclusion. Jerry seems to have had a very lonely childhood, being more or less dumped by his parent onto various relatives while they were on the road, and never having any siblings. I may be wrong, but to me its significant that he married very young to a woman who was several years older than him (a Mother figure?) and began a family almost straight away. In one video I saw it was reported that he said he wanted a large family so his first son would not be lonely like he had been. Dean, on the other hand, grew up in a much more traditional stable Italian Catholic family. His father had a steady job as a barber and his mother was a traditional housewife and also apparently an excellent dressmaker. Dean and his brother were both choirboys in their local church and were also Boy Scouts as children. They also apparently had a large extended family with plenty of aunts, uncles and cousins all living in the same neighbourhood. Again, Dean was also 9 years older, so for Jerry he fitted perfectly the role, as you say, of big brother/ father figure that he never really had growing up. But Dean didn't have that same desperate neediness; he was a grown man who already had an established family, his parents, his brother and a wife and young and growing family of his own. He really didn't need to take on all of Jerry's teenage insecurities as well, and I feel that, as much as he liked him at the beginning, it was Jerry's clinginess and need for control that eventually wore on Dean and was a big contributory factor in their very bitter breakup.

Linda Shelley I COMPLETELY agree with this. every word. esp the last line. you can see Jerry's clinginess and need for control. and I also saw patti as a mother figure instead of his wife. to be honest, she even started looking like his mother in their later years. it's as if jerry was just another one of her kids. i think jerry never divorced at the beginning despite all of those affairs because he didn't want his children to be from a broken family. i didn't know that's why he wanted to have a large family. makes a lot of sense. i feel like he finally matured when he married his second wife and had the adopted daughter. it's like he finally became a normal family man by that point and then completely erased his past - divorcing his first wife and then disinheriting all of his sons. but yeah dean was just fed up by that point i think at the time of the breakup. dean just wanted to be free to be his own man and jerry probably saw it as a bitter act of betrayal. it's so sad. what could've been. i'm glad we have at least 10 years of their partnership but it really didn't have to end the way it did.

Debinosa and Linda Shelley, what you said is partially true! Jerry wanted to be his own man too! He started to direct his own home movies, developed new interests that Dean did not like! Jerry was ready to move on as well being so young, talented, and ambitious as he was! Jerry might have been controlling, clingy, and all of those things that you mentioned, however, the team was great also because Jerry took care of the business part of it while Dean played golf all day! You depicted Jerry as a crying baby, clingy, and controlling! They were two very different artists. They lived in a very difficult world with pressure coming from every corner! It wasn't easy! There were outside forces as well that created the split. It wasn't just Jerry's fault! Jerry was clingy, Dean was more uninvolved and unattached! They loved each other a lot and had a lot of chemistry! When a split happens it is never one person's fault only! Dean also had his faults! Both men made their mistakes and they knew it! That's why towards the end of their lives they became closer again! :)

I agree for the most part. I think Jerry needed Dean so much early on in their partnership. He represented what he never had. I think Jerry felt so secure and loved with Dean and I’ve also noticed that Dean kind of indulged Jerry, maybe spoiled him a little so it was really not anybody’s fault for their breakup. It was just time to part. But you’d have to be blind not to see the love they had for one another their whole lives. They had their own careers but they never stopped caring. These two were absolute magic together!
