  • India's high commissioner to the UK discusses India's election and what the result will mean for the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is claiming victory, but his alliance is far short of the 400 seats he set out to win.
The world's biggest election was held in seven phases over six weeks, with almost a billion people registered to vote.

Don't agree here - Alliance governments tend to be more corrupt due to the presence of multiple power centers and ministers thereby being less afraid of the repercussions of their actions. A majority for the ruling party is desirable, with a strong constructive opposition party having good numbers - we have neither in the current mandate, no single opposition party with three digits and the largest opposition has not demonstrated being a good opposition with their conduct in the house.

Modi didn't call Muslims directly as infiltrators but he was talking about the Congress manifesto which talks about reservations for Muslims. In the next line, he started talking about infiltrators, probably referring to illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar etc.
For that divine thing, he said multiple things.
    1. It doesn't make sense how he became what he is, coming from a background of his, in that context he said that he was convinced that it is a divine will, otherwise, it doesn't make sense. He acknowledged that he expected people to not understand or brutally troll him, but he just shared what he thought.
    2. There are 2 forms of divine, unmanifested & manifested. So he looks at 1.4 Billion Indian citizens as the manifested form of the divine & he serves them with that sense of service.

Bjp has still emerged as the single largest party this elections. None of the other parties, of which most are regional, have even come close to what bjp has achieved. Having said that, it will be back to the drawing board, introspect and get into corrective course. Let me sum up by saying, inspite of a huge Foreign interference, Modi is back.

Yes. I personally agree. India is however is total mess of cultures and religions and opinions from left right center up down and everywhere possible. Looks like still the best scenario where there are one or two major fractions with smaller ones also playing some role. Afterall, so much so for the so called largest democracy. But it’s also time the world calls out the west hypocrisy and shows them the mirror on what they define a just and informed election. Hope the bjp will pull up the domestic game and do better with this result

If only Modi were running a dictatorship, if only the majority of Hindus were religious fanatics who banded together and voted BJP into power, if only the system of democracy had been tarnished under BJP rule, if only voting machines had been tampered with-then the NDA would have comfortably crossed 400 seats as they aspired. However, none of the above claims by the opposition and the international media were true. Kudos to Congress for increasing their vote count, but they still came nowhere near the seat count (206) during Manmohan Singh's government in 2009.

The voting machines being tampered with was quite a stretch I agree but the ECI had been letting BJP bend and break election rules. Hindus, we aren't fanatics but BJP did use religion to win votes. It worked before but even the people of Ayodhiya want lower inflation, more employment and opportunities which can materially improve their lives. Temple is one thing, but one can't live off of prayers alone. Even they rejected the BJP.
The amount of money the party had is absurdly more than any other party, the strangle hold of the media made them essentially a mouthpiece for the party, the jailing of opposition leaders, freezing of funds of other parties, weaponisation of ED and CBI, and so much more. The BJP corroded our institution and democratic checks and balances.
This is why, even though they won more seats than the entire opposition combined, the narrative is that they lost. Not just because they won fewer seats than they did in the previous elections but more so because with the chokehold they had on the levers of power, they still couldn't win a majority.

When my prime minister said that a specific religious minority (Muslims) are infiltrators he didn't mean it to the Indian Muslims they're very much our fellow citizens actually what he meant or addressed was the huge infiltration that's happening through the porus international borders of the state of West Bengal. This is very much evident across the country. all menial and construction jobs throughout the country are taken up by this low paid and exploited work force, which is systematically infiltrated into the country by a huge labour mafia. If this illegal workforce can be tracked down and filtered naturally lots of Indians will have jobs this illegal workforce is a part of the vote bank politics which my prime minister plans to clean up because they're also eating into the social schemes doled out by the central government
