  • Can old Mr. Modi become new Mr. Modi? His biographer, Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, thinks not.
    ...........................................
In an interview with his biographer to discuss whether Narendra Modi will be temperamentally and psychologically able to adjust to the different circumstances he will face as Prime Minister in his third term, now that the BJP no longer has a majority and Mr. Modi will be dependent on his allies to survive in office, Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay says it’s most unlikely that old Mr. Modi will become new Mr. Modi.
Mr. Mukhopadhyay, the author of ‘Narendra Modi: The Man, The Times’, says Mr. Modi is by character and attitude used to having his way and accustomed to close centralized control of the government, enabled by his Party’s majority, and will find it very hard to become a consensual Prime Minister who has to listen to, give-in to and share with his allies.
This interview is not about the policies Mr. Modi will follow or the political strategies his government will devise during his third term as Prime Minister. Instead it addresses one simple single question or, perhaps, two. First, how will he adjust and accommodate himself to the fact that, despite his multiple predictions and boasts, the BJP has lost its majority and, despite his claim that mother Ganga has adopted him, his own performance in Varanasi shows he’s lost over 3 lakh votes between 2019 and 2024?
The second question, which is more dominant, is can Mr. Modi, temperamentally and psychologically, adjust to the very different circumstances of power and political behaviour that he faces as Prime Minister? What will be his attitude to the opposition, to institutions like parliament, the judiciary and media and to important concerns such as criticism and dissent or the alleged misuse of agencies like ED and CBI?
No one understands Narendra Modi the person better than Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay. His biography of the Prime Minister is by far the most insightful available. Therefore, his understanding of how Mr. Modi will behave and how he will adjust to the challenges he faces is perhaps unrivalled. Rather than give away what Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay has said - which you should hear for yourself - I will help you by giving you the list of questions asked.
    Here they are:
    1) Let me start with a basic question. As his biographer few people know and understand Narendra Modi the person better than you do. He first predicted the BJP would win 370 seats. Then in an interview to the Economic Times after the fifth phase of polling he said it had already crossed 272. He also spoke about a thousand year reign. In the end the party has only got 240 seats, way short of 272. Will he be an embarrassed man this morning or is he thick-skinned enough to brush it off?
    2) Let’s look at his personal performance in Varanasi. In 2019 he had a 4.8 lakh majority. That’s been reduced to just 1.5. In fact, initially he was even trailing. As a man who claimed in may that Ganga meri maa hai, mujhe Ganga ne god liya hai, how will he handle this very personal reversal in fortune?
    - He’s lost his majority yet delivered a celebratory speech - what does that tell you about him? And his state of mind?
    3) Now there’s no doubt that the NDA is in a position to form a government. It has won 294 seats. But how comfortable will Narendra Modi be as Prime Minister when he is dependent on support from Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar? No longer can he be the autocratic and authoritarian Prime Minister he has got used to over the last 10 years.
    4) The key question is can Narendra Modi temperamentally and psychologically adjust to the very different circumstances he now faces as Prime Minister? Or is he psychologically ill-equipped to handle a coalition government where the BJP doesn’t have its own majority and he needs to carry his allies?
    5) At this point let’s come to some of the things he said during the campaign. He said he is not biologically born but sent by God to do his work. At the Vivekananda Rock Memorial he wrote: “I feel a divine energy”. These are remarks that will be thrown at his face repeatedly with the barb that God has disowned his alleged messenger and turned his back on Modi. How will he handle that?

It is extremely refreshing that finally the constitution is safe, democracy is alive and dictatorship gone. The best part is India could have a very healthy and constructive opposition in the Parliament. I am extremely grateful and happy that Modi was shown his rightful place. Now he's no more the most dominating boss he was. His very survival depends on the confidence of his allies. He can't dominate and dictate anyone anymore. A person who doesn't have any ethic, morality, humility, honesty and who lack tolerance and most of all who believed he is a god himself is not the least fit to be a PM or for that matter he's not even fit to be a leader at all. His polarisation policy is no different than the British's divide and rule policy which is not good and a sort of suicide for India as Unity in diversity is the very basis which India was build.

He will wait until he takes oath. after that, he will buy congress and other parties MPs especially Nitish and naidu,s MPs by horse trading. after all, who does not like a post of a cabinet minster???? i can bet that modi has already planned how he will put all the opposition behind the Bars and make Nitish and Naidu irrelevant in his own party. he will easily rule for the next 5 years.. next time, he will do even more rigging and communal polarization and get 400 seats. Blame for Modi acquiring such a huge personality disorder goes to media which he controlled first and then through lapdog media created a big pool of andhbhakts. He was projected as a world leader, Vishwaguru, omniscient, omnipotent. God saved India, through a sensible section of voters, from falling into a deep dungeon. Modi's excesses had crossed its nadir, and people had to find a way out. They have done it, though the way is still a little narrow one. Modi must go to make the way a broader one.

Many things have changed in India since Narendra Modi first became prime minister. But one change that has gone almost unnoticed is that a process of real decolonisation has transpired. And because of this the old, colonised ruling class has been swept away. This is a very good thing. It should have happened long, long ago. As someone who belonged to that ruling class, I consider myself well qualified to explain why this process of decolonisation was overdue and how we failed India as its ruling class.
The truth is we were an effete, hopeless bunch. We spoke no Indian language well, but this did not matter to us. We were proud of speaking English well. In our drawing rooms we sneered at those who dared enter without speaking good English. And at those whose table manners were not embellished with western refinement. In short, those who fumbled with forks and knives and preferred eating with their hands and without cutlery.
When we travelled to foreign lands, we made a good pretense of being Indian, but we never cared to understand what it meant to be Indian. We pretended to know everything about India’s ancient culture and civilisation, but we knew almost nothing. In the schools and colleges we attended, we learned more about western civilisation, history, and literature than about our own, so it was not totally our fault.
When it came to politics and elections, we stuck loyally by the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and its various heirs because they were people like us. We did not care that Parliament had been turned into a private members club. It was our club. Nor did we care that the Congress Party under Sonia Gandhi’s stewardship had also become a private club. It was our club. In our drawing rooms we talked endlessly of democracy and secularism and saw ourselves as ordained to protect these ideas.
Then along came Narendra Modi and the earth shifted beneath our feet. He may not have been personally responsible for everything that changed but he was a vital part of the political change that happened, and this somehow became an essential element of the bigger changes that were happening. Suddenly, almost overnight, after Modi first became prime minister, we became not just powerless but irrelevant. A new breed of Indians who spoke Hindi well and English not at all started replacing us in the high offices of government, as political analysts, and anchors in TV studios, in journalism, in Bollywood movies and TV series. They were not impressed with our skills in English, and we were so impressed by how Indian they were that we tried to emulate them just to belong. Some of us have succeeded, most of us have not.
Those who have not but wish to continue being relevant cling these days to Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi and hope that somehow, they will be able to defeat Modi. Some act as advisors to the current heirs of the Dynasty and fill their heads with grandiose ideas like saving the Constitution and saving democracy. But the truth is that Rahul Gandhi’s main message remains the same as it was in the last general election. This is that Modi is corrupt and that he works only for a handful of rich Indians. He steals your money, he shrieks at his political rallies, and he gives it to his rich friends. How exactly does this work?
    Festive offer
As leader of the Congress Party, he is seen, especially by foreign correspondents, as the only man who can defeat Modi. It is bad luck for him that he seems so incapable of convincing Indian voters of this, despite trying hard to prove that he is one of them. He has worked with farmers in rice fields, transported coal on bicycles with miners, listened to the woes of vegetable sellers and spent long hours with mechanics in dingy shops to show how much he cares about the ‘common man.’ So why is the common man not impressed? Could it be because these gestures come across somehow as noblesse oblige and not genuine acts of sympathy?
What is it about ‘autocratic’, ‘dictatorial’ Modi that attracts ordinary Indian voters more? The answer that I got to this question on my recent travels in rural India is that people have seen changes in their lives, and they believe that these changes have happened because of Modi. These are not remarkable changes. They are simple things like roads, drinking water, electricity, and Internet services but because they were not there before, they seem remarkable.
Many of these things should have happened long ago. But because we were so colonised a ruling class, we did not notice that ordinary Indians were forced to endure the worst public services. In our drawing rooms and in our entitlement, we did not care about such things because in our privileged cocoon it would have been unthinkable to go to a government hospital or a government school. Modi’s advent burst the bubble in which we lived, and the truth is that most of us have no idea why this happened. We continue to hope that he will be defeated this time and hope that the message that democracy is in danger will resonate with voters. When the results come, we are likely to be disappointed again. I met nobody in rural India who saw Modi as corrupt and autocratic...
