VIDEO DESCRIPTION
How to draw a valley gorge landscape scene as it relates to drawing landscapes and scenery. This tutorial provides simple but effective tips on drawing a valley gorge landscape scene using pen and ink shading techniques and variation in texture. Following these techniques you can do the same drawing with graphite, colored pencil, charcoal, pastels, and even paint :-)
i never thought i would be drawing some of the things i have been here lately. ever since i started watching your tutorials, ive found myself learning something new with each video i watch. if i have no inspiration or desire to draw, i can watch one of these tutorials and instantly dive back into a blank sheet of paper to give it some life. Thank you for taking all the time and dedication you put fourth towards your videos. They are greatly appreciated by me amd many others 🙏🙏
This. So true.
Sorry to be off topic but does someone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account??
I was stupid lost the account password. I appreciate any help you can give me.
I'm 36 West Coast USA and I recently started doing pen & ink. Your video was the first one I watched a few weeks ago. Since then I have watched them all & done 3 or 4 cool pictures of landscapes, trees and a barn. I took all my supplies to Japan and practiced while there for two weeks and I left a drawing for my wife's mother in Tokyo Japan.. I'm sharing because I really appreciate your ability to translate the simplicity of drawing and how far reaching your passion has traveled. You have helped me make a new connection between my eyes and my brain and my brain to my hand. Looking forward to your future Videos! You are the MAN! Thanks a lot Alphonso I'm going to have my son watching your videos when he is old enough! I also like how you teach about the drawing supplies which helped me.
M.J Proctor Thanks so much! I really appreciate that show of support :-)
Hi Alphonso!
Your channel is like a bottomless treasure chest. I feel myself really lucky that i found it. :-) Your works are truly amazing
thanks so much...that really means alot. I just want to share things that help to make it easy to see that drawing is about "seeing", first and foremost
All yours videos, I had see, until now, are pure gold.
I absolutely love your channel, I loved art but my 7th grade art teacher told me to give up because I couldn't draw a straight line, I'm 22 now and I recently decided to seriously learn, you've taught me so much.
Edward Yorke :-)...some teachers just suck...glad you didnt give up altogether..prove them wrong!
I'm 23, and i take my revenge now :) !
how's it going so far?
I like how you show how to simplify, simplify, simplify. perceiving basic shapes is really helpful
+Billy Glen Jr Thanks. Thats what helped me
I've been watching your tutorials since yesterday, and you made me think about a lot of stuff. I've always drawn inside my comfort zone, and when I tried to do something different I got overwhelmed by my lack of some techniques and a lot of things that I never studied. You are helping me to learn a lot of stuff, and to feel confident that I can improve a lot, practice is really the key. Appreciate it a lot. Greetings from Argentina.
+grayfoxmetal Glad I can help and thanks for providing the feedback :-)
Mid-ground rocks -- I see faces!
Great technique. Your drawings are FANTASTIC!
I love pen and ink!
lol thanks...ditto
Wow. I am almost embarrassed to admit this, as someone who isn't exactly a beginning artist (I've been a pastel painter for many years, and have even won awards in some Utah plein air competitions several years ago), but over the past few years, my actual drawing skills have gotten very rusty, and have taken the level of my paintings down with them. As we all know, without daily practice of any skill, decay sets in. Once that starts, it can easily dampen one's desire to paint.
However, I did not discover your channel until just a few days ago! While I have been going out and sketching and painting on location recently, I felt like I was sort of spinning my wheels a bit; I didn't realize that your instruction was just what I needed and what I've been looking for until I started watching your tutorials.
Watching the manner in which you approach drawing and rendering rocks (also in your other video) made me wonder: "how did I not know these concepts years ago???" I have lost track of the number of paintings I've abandoned or avoided because the rocks were just too complex to deal with...despite the fact they are really my favorite subject to paint. I've gotten too bogged down with the overall composition and somehow failed to see the very simple idea to break the canyon walls and rocks into simpler shapes to more easily define their multi-faceted planes.
After watching this video in particular, I think a small explosion of enlightenment and clarity went off in my brain: what you describe as a valley gorge is also a canyon. I have tons of reference photos of canyons that are similar in scale to what you've shown in this video; they would be considered "narrows" (like what you see in Zion' NP's Virgin River Narrows). I immediately went into my reference photos, pulled up a few, grabbed my pencils and ball point pen, and started sketching. To say that I saw an instant improvement in my sketches is not an exaggeration! They are far better than the crap I was putting in the sketchbook over the past few weeks.
I just went and purchased your book, both because I can never have enough quality reference books in my art library, and also to support your work here. A couple of years ago, I wanted to get back into pen and ink drawing (I did medical illustrations almost 30 years ago when I was in medical school, believe it or not!), so I went to my library and checked out what books they had on the subject. They didn't help me at all. I'm really looking forward to working my way through your extensive videos here on RUclips and pairing that with your book. I'm also confident that these will help me get more out of the other great reference books I have (Carlson and Edgar Payne's in particular).
Thank you so much, Alphonso! Your videos may end up being the single most important catalyst to getting me back into my art and helping me take my game up to a new level.
Thanks so much🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Just drew some cliff dwellings. This video will sure help me a lot on improving it. I'm in the middle of going through all your pen and ink tutorials, slowly getting there :) Thank you!
+Xin Xu Thanks much. Glad you find them helpful
your videos are so inspiring! You break everything down so well
I love drawing with pens. My favourite art style to draw with when i use pens is the Don't starve style. It's really dun and simple
+Kole Hunt :-)
Discovered your channel today and added just about a hundred videos t my saved playlists, thanks for blessing us with this info
: )
Spectacular drawing...great music! Thanks so much for sharing your talents. You rock!

Such a cool dude, just bought your book off amazon.. been sketching with pencil for years and youve inspired me to dip my feet into watercolor and pen + ink. Thanks!
Glad youre exploring something new : )
Wow. This is a great scenery for little gremlins to pop out of the cracks. Thanks. I learned something. yeah. :)
Thanks again. Very helpful and clear. Very useful.
Love watching you go beast mode on drawing... it looks so impressive at the end. But at the same time im thinking, hey this is simple i can do this (eventually)!
lol You can
Wow this turned out really good, love the 1 in the foreground and the 01 in the background.
+elementsk8er40 thanks
Really appreciate you showing us your whole process like this, it's very interesting and very helpful.
thx...once you can learn something
2:00 Love this! It really helps break down complicated scenes for me
glad it helps : )
thanks for sharing this priceless tutorials
You brought back my interest in sketching; thanks to your tutorials. I really do admire you sir and your work
+Jessa Angela Thanks so much! I hope you stay inspired :-)
I will Sir! thank you very much 😊
You have a beautiful gift, it's great that your sharing your knowledge. Do you have a website?
I cannot wrap my brain around how someone like you has less views than say expert village. Not that they are paticularly bad but they teach on a very surface level whereas every video you make is so in depth. I feel that I learn more from your videos than a years worth of art class could suffice. That being one of the reasons I lean more towards being self taught but I digress. I'm just sad that when you type in drawing, illustration, or inking your not the first to show up. Thank you for the amazing content : )
no worries at all...at least you found it :-)
I have been watching you for a while and really like the music mixes you add in your videos.
thanks :-)
+Alphonso Dunn you want to know how funny this is I don't even remember making that comment I think someone else was on my account that's absolutely hilarious
lol

Loving the simplified thinking. I can totally see how you see it while listening to your explanation. Gonna try this one too. :)
+hiutale glad it helped :-)
wow great demo. so simple and very effective.
+Kevwe Okiti Thank you
Man, that is awesome how that came out. I never thought to use a smaller pen as I go back. I was making my forms simpler, but your way is awesome. My forms can be complex but my lines are much lighter. GREAT advice.
no worries...another trick under your belt :-)
I love your videos, many drawing videos are so super boring but im just hooked watching your videos at the same time while sketching away, :)
thekapow thanks so much. and thanks for sharing that
those colored mechanical pencils you use to sketch are really cool!
arent they :-)
***** im a little late haha but what kind off colored pencils are those
You should share the music you put in this video into the description, you have good musical taste.
thx definitely will..its from the youtube audio library

Dude you are a modern day Rembrandt!.... master of light and shadow. ...how long did it take you to draw that mother?.... I mean in real time.
ura239 thanks much...about 30-40 mins
Nice!...
Cool landscape, music, and explanations! :)
thanx much
I purchased your book. looking forward to getting it
Wow! You are really talented! Did you take art classes or are you self-taught? And your method of instructions is easy to comprehend. I love all of your videos and I am practicing what you teach as soon as I watch each one while it is fresh in my mind. Course, sometimes I need to go back and watch it again until I have it set in the right side of my brain. Thank you for taking the time to share your gift. What are the names of your books?
Were you going from darker to lighter because there was more light at the end of the valley, or because it was further away and therefore fainter? Do you always make things that are further away lighter in value?
In this video, both...And yes, I generally make things that are further away lighter, with progressively less detail and contrast
I was lucky enough to see you in an advert :)
cool! welcome onboard
great skills!
Great work. When you go to a final pen/ink size do you use different techniques for your shading? Example, if you took this cool scene you built, and wanted to draw it at 11x17, it would seem that making clean shading lines might be difficult. Do you adjust your shading techniques for larger sizes?
+Brian Warner yes...your line work would be tighter
remarkable. Hey, have you thought about making books? Like comic books for example?
an drawing instruction book is coming up this SUMMER! :-) a comic book?...hmmm, maybe
The final result looks so damn interesting...
You are really talented
thanks much

+ALPHONSO DUNN , I live in kolkata(India), can you help me in one thing, can you tell me the regular fountain pen which is available in market for writing purpose, is it okay to use it for drawing and hatching work
Lamy fountain pens are pretty good
Thank you very much for your response. Let me search the kolkata stationary stores. I will get back to you if I find those pens.
can u please tell me what colored pencils brand u where useing, they looked awesome, by the way love your videos u explained them in a way that was easy to understand, i love how u simplify your art but then u make it extravigant, well done well done ^_^
Jordan Letourneau I just used colored 2mm leads for a 2mm lead holder....Think I bought them on amazon or ebay
Alphonso that was awesome. Rocks always confuses me. I feel like Mr.dumb xD
This vid helps me alot !!!
Dude!!!! Great vid!!! I have learned a lot from you and you have a real knack for creating things from the minds eye. But I have trouble with sketching rock formations and stuff due to their lack of predictability. Could you create a video on that please? But seriously though, your art is amazing, keep it up!!^ω^
Thank you!
Awesome.

+Marzia Rahman thanks
amazing video, nice work man.
Hoho Ha thanks
Nice. I've been enjoying drawing landscape but I never get an idea so I just scribble scribble until I can get to see something and fix it up to make it look cool but I think I'm doing it wrong.
Sometimes that works, its also good to have a concept in mind..just explore new ways to approach it, thats all
***** I allocated this whole weekend for drawing and I've been reading a lot on drawing basics. Suddenly I started seeing everything as simple shapes ... ummm ... this must be it. Artist Eye ability!
hmmm, i like that, "Artist Eye Ability" lol...sounds pretty catchy. You better copyright lol
Amazing videos you have here. Really thank you for all these information on inking and drawing.
Sorry but couldn't stop myself of noticing your pencils, may I know which brand are these? I tried to search the net but didn't find something similar.

hi Alphonso. My name is August. I am decorative concrete artist not good at drawing, but sculpting. I have been working in the themed construction trade for 4 yrs now. I have been a concrete finisher for 20 yrs, primarily flat decorative work. Anyways Ill have to share some of the projects I have worked on, given you more information on my skill set. I now have the tools to build a house which blends into its environment. Imagine a home which looks like it was suppose to be there. I have an idea but cannot clearly express what I have in mind due to lack of practice drawing. Anyways does this sound like something you would want to be a part of?.
Thanks so much for even considering to offer the opportunity. To be honest I doubt I would be the best person for a project like this my time is so scarce right now it would be difficult. But please keep me posted on its progress, would love to see its finished design. I love when architectural designs complement the space theyre in
I have some very rough, not so good sketches. Would you consider drawing this up for me?
Awesome!
+Diosming Masendo : )
I like it, your drawings and tutorials. Keep it up. Thank you for sharing clear and easy to understand tutorials. ;)
beautiful
: )
Thanks, this helped alot :)
cool :-)
Where did you learn to draw like that, its well good!
practice practice practice...and a lil talent lol
Yup haha
verry style!!!
:-)
very nice good attempt keep it up.
I'll make a better attempt next time promise lol
WOW
+Tyler Lundy :-)
Im working on this piece now, but i dont get the same depth as yours. Mine gets a bit rudimental and static, still good inspiration though
Keep practicing : )
Alphonso Dunn i finished it. I got it when i made the final cliffs. Not bad! Mine looks like someone peeking out from a bird nest in 1st person. Had lots of making this drawing!
I need your help with drawing baroque anthus leaf designs they're so complicated I've tried and it looked ok but it would be better if I knew the reason behind the detail
Brentt Reinninger forget the leaf and visualize it as basic forms. If I were to do a tutorial it wouldnt be soon enough to help, but try having a look at the tutorials I did onhow to draw complex forms
Ur drawing is amazing. ..but I think u should watch other youtubers on how they make their videos. . Good luck
🙏
Great work !!!!!! Always learning from you!!! By the way, what's the name of that sound track??
kgebahi have to remember to post it in the description...
thank you!
