  • 2007 GMC Yukon, Low oil pressure, In this video we did a manual oil pressure test also I demonstrated how to make a oil pressure test fitting out of an old oil sending unit sensor, we also did an overfill test with the rear of vehicle elevated to rule out a broken seal on pickup tube, checked factory spec for oil pressure, explained oil pressure test splitting the system in half by taking two readings in two different places, the oil filter housing and sensor area , LS engine , Troubleshooting

Our family had two trucks close to this model year do this same thing within a few weeks of each other. One had about half normal oil pressure and the other went to zero. Both were using Mobil1 oil filters and were approaching oil change time when it occurred. Maybe that was just a coincidence, dont’t know. Just like this video, changing the oil and going back to AC Delco filters fixed both trucks and the problem has not reoccurred since.

Guess what tho he got a Mobil - 1 oil filter for it cause it was free. It had acdelco in it. What do u think oil filter ?? Or pick up tube..

If that doesn't work, you may need a new oil pump. Installed a new high volume Melling oil pump on mine over a year ago. Went from 16 psi at idle to about 24psi from WideOpenThrottle to rest/stop. Still happy it's been done and renewed all my gaskets along the way. Plenty of tutorials on how to do it otherwise paying a mechanic is $4000 for the job.

Ford rigs their in dash oil pressure gauges, so long as the engine is above 5 psi, the gauge stays pegged and they never fluctuate... this is fact. I've heard it's to keep down owner complaints, people freak out when pressure drops and the gauge shows it. For Ford's modular engine, it's actually normal for pressure to drop hot at idle down to 20 to 15 psi, it's how the pumps are designed from what I've heard. My 4.6 does it with a manual gauge hooked up and it's perfectly normal. However, on cold starts, it goes up to 80 psi on 5W20, normal running when hot it's 40 to 60 depending on the RPM's.

Good morning. I looked at your video and I got really curious.
I admire your diag skills. and you have the tools and know how to get around a minor problem
and thank you for the suggestions on how to check for issues and i will keep that in my hat.
You mentioned that changing an oil filter restored your oil pressure reading?
    1. Did you cut the old oil filter open to see what happened?
    2. What type of oil filter was installed previously?
    3. How many miles was on the the oil filter
    4. If the old filter was clogged?
    5. What was it clogged with?
    I have a 03 Silverado. Previous the rebuild. i had 285k
After warming up the oil pressure would drop to 20 psi and i was having lifter ticking noises.
I added snake oil remedies and no avail
SO i pulled the motor and found.
    1. THe cam bearings worn out
    2. Rocker arms worn out, bearings and trunions worn.
    3. Main and rod bearings were normal.
    4. Oil pump was normal.
After the rebuild. Oil pressure returned to 40 psi at idle.
I am at 365k and motor is running good.

    • @jonsautorepair

I’m glad you found it, and yes the filter was just tar type substances, I suspect the customer put some kid snake oil in it, I can’t remember the brand of the old filter, although the oil pressure only went up about 10psi I still suspect some word journals , there’s only so much you can do apart from rebuilding the engine like you, you did the right thing

Check the oil pressure at the filter with a manual gage(like in video) & compare it to the gage on the dash, if the manual gage is 10psi or more lower then its probably a split o-ring on your oil pick up tube, if there both low its probably the DOD system, Make sure the engine is at operating temp when testing

I’ve got a 2008 Denali and my oil pressure starting getting low on the gauge, but no lights or warnings came on. I started hearing a deep rattling from the engine when I was on the highway and my pressure dropped to a quarter on the gauge.
It scared me to death so I got it home (I was close) and just parked it. I’ve had a slow leak which I plan to get fixed this January, but don’t have the money for that kind of gauge work until then.
I let it sit, checked the oil level, and added a quart. I didn’t really notice any difference in the oil level and the pressure went back up while it was sitting & idling.
The problem is when I’m driving it above 50-60 miles an hour, that’s when the rattling starts and the pressure starts dropping.

Not exactly, in 2005 GM implemented there AFM (active fuel management) basically it means the engine can switch to a 6 or 4 cylinder mode depending on the speed & load of , in turn saving on fuel economy, the good news is that your 2004 doesn’t have that system therefore taking out that equation, the AFM system is very problematic & most GM enthusiast delete the AFM system all together

I disagree with the improper oil filter theory. You said the filter was plugged. No filter should ever get plugged before the next scheduled oil change. It sounds to me that the owner/s either didn't change the filter on the last oil change or didn't do the oil change/s on time. The engine is full of gunk and that gunk plugged up the filter. The filter doesn't produce gunk, it catches it. Or it's supposed to, and the aftermarket filter did just that.
If the AC Delco filters aren't getting plugged over the same oil change interval, then they are not catching as much of the gunk and thus, they are not protecting your engine from damage from that gunk. An oil filter that doesn't do its job would explain the trouble GM has with their AFM system with the collapsed lifters. Either that or GM is telling customers to go longer than they should between oil changes. I suggest that you inform customer of this and advise them to use a quality filter that catches much more of the gunk and shorten oil change intervals. Inspect the filter for the amount of gunk in them and I will bet that the amount of gunk will go down with each change as the gunk left behind by the AC Delco filters and/or going too long between oil changes gets cleaned out.

    • @jonsautorepair
      @jonsautorepair  11 месяцев назад

I don’t disagree with your assessment, but the fact remains that the new oil filter brung the oil pressure up 10 psi, I do agree that there’s probably gunk in this engine & the root cause is still yet to be determined
