Hello, Daniel, 3:50 3:50 I’ve had insomnia for 3 years. At this point I’m only able to get “ light sleep” maybe for 3-4 hrs then I’m up awake the rest of the night & dreading the next day at work. I’m a nurse & finding I’m not able to be alert enough to do my job safely. Any idea why I can’t get into a deep, restful sleep? It’s been going on for a long time.

Thank you Daniel and Michelle for addressing my "zero sleep" question. :) Still a bit confused by the answer because of the section in Set It & Forget It about sleep drive, the 17 hour math, reducing unnecessary time in bed, etc. Which is why I was wondering where that 17 or whatever hours start if you didn't actually sleep the night before. Cheers and thanks again for your time.

Anytime! You know, this chapter was really just to illustrate how when we chase sleep it can become tricky. Like Michelle said, education and letting to us what leads where we want to be, timing and when we are in bed etc, this isn’t at all important

@@thesleepcoachschool8192 Ok interesting, that wasn’t my take away at all from the book! The section on gas vs brake made tons of sense, and it did seem to (logically) recommend some degree of sleep restriction, culminating in the set wake up time.

Good afternoon Daniel I'm still in this struggle. I tend to fall asleep on the couch or sometimes in bed but like 45 minutes I wake up or a hour or so I wake up and wide awake. Last week I did really well 5 ro 7 a night but last 3 nights it's been a hour or two each night . I watch TV around 730 or 8 and fall asleep for a hour and from then I'm wide awake . So I tried going to bed around 10ish and I can't fall asleep I just wanna get to 4am . Is this hyperarousal or even possible fatal insomnia or please give me some insight on this I'm crazy confused how one week I can go pretty average sleep next week only 1 to 2 hours it's wearing me down thanks

Definitely not fatal insomnia. people who have strokes do not know they have strokes. people who have insomnia know they have insomnia. scary stuff but fatal insomnia is a stroke like protein disorganization in the brain that causes a sleep like state where the body thinks it’s always asleep so it never actually sleeps. not insomnia

Hi, there really are no rules when it comes to sleep… rather it’s attempting to have control with rules that creates struggle. Just doing what we feel like can help so much

How is possible to ‘sleep’ but be aware of everything around you. I never sleep deeply. Have vivid lucid dreams and never wake feeling groggy. Can I ever be cured? This has been going on for five extremely frustrating years

@@johnmonk3381 wow some reply. For your info I know what it feels like to sleep and wake up normally as I have done for most of my life. 5 years ago I stopped sleeping completely after an extremely traumatic event. Severe hyperarousal followed. As far as I am aware normal sleepers don’t just leap out of bed as tho they have never slept. Which is what I do. It used to take me about 10 min after a cup of coffee to be awake. Like normal sleepers. I don’t experience this anymore which leads me to think I am sleeping extremely lightly, with one eye literally open as my brain is still trying to protect me. Obviously I must be getting some form of sleep as I am still alive 5 years later. Even if I am so exhausted that I fall asleep in front of TV, my eyes are closed but I am still hearing the TV. I don’t feel like this is normal as when I used to fall asleep in front of the TV I was out for the count. I am still exhausted and wired all the time so no I don’t believe I am ‘fighting my own self conjured demons over absolutely nothing’ Don’t judge people until you have walked their journey

@@debstemperley8849 You sound slightly similar to me but I am worried that I have Sporadic Fatal Insomnia as I’ve read it can take up to 7 years to kill you. This all started to me after a traumatic event 10 months ago where I was convinced I was going to die.

no one will read this. But to me it's not okay to be awake. I'm going to be super tired at 20pm. We have a little child. I can't spend any time with my wife. She's only available after like 20:30 when our child is finally asleep. But I have to go... Also I'm a musician I can't play live gigs when I have to go to sleep at 20pm... So it's not okay in every single scenario.

This is very true, it’s not okay as in “totally fine” or even as in “I’m okay with it” in many circumstances… it’s more like, we can HATE the fact that we are awake yet at the same time know that the more we try to change it, the more struggle we have… “okay” can mean that we simply acknowledge we have no control and this leads to where we want to be… rooting for you
