@@George-ei1im There are different designs or formulas for anti-glare coatings, some may give off a yellow hugh, while others may give green, red or blue. Usually the higher quality anti-reflectives don't create this problem as often (as they allow more light to pass through the lens rather than reflect off).

I’m a career law enforcement officer and I used to wear them. During a foot chase the bad guy ran into an abandoned house with no light. Since it was a day shift I didn’t have a light on my belt. Anyway it was a very clear dry cool day. The guy ran into the home and hid in a closet. As I searched the house I realized my glasses were not transitioning very quickly but I continued to search the home. I came to the walk-in closet and I having no idea where he was he ran out of the closet and shoved me backwards. Of course I fell in the junk and he took off. I caught up with him on the highway where he had both lanes stopped trying to pull an elderly man out of his truck. But the old man hung on until me and an off duty officer were able to get him in cuffs. The moral of the story, don’t use them in police work. It could get you hurt or killed.
That might not always be an option if you need the glasses to have clear enough vision to do your job. For someone in law enforcement they need to be able to spot if someone has a weapon.
It might be good to go over what the Category of Sunglasses lenses are. All Sunglasses should have on the left temple a number fallowed by a P for Polarized or an N for Non-Polarized. So for example a 3P would be category 3 Polarized. Category levels: Category 0: 0-20% light blocked Category 1: 20-57% light blocked Category 2: 57-82% light blocked Category 3: 82-92% light blocked Category 4: 92-97% light blocked It’s rare to find category 4 on a sunglass as they are illegal to drive with. Category 2 and 3 are the most common with 3 being best for sunny weather and category 2 being good for cloudy weather.
I have Transitions lenses at present and they’ve done well for me. Long ago, there used to be Photogray lenses but they were available only in glass lenses. Transitions are in plastic lenses including multifocal lenses, a nice plus. A couple observations: - Photochromic lenses work best in cooler rather than in hot weather. - Concave lenses appear to get darker than convex lenses (think how light is refracted in each lens type)
While Dr. Allen did mention Transitions Gen S can get to a category 3 it’s important to know that they get anywhere in between clear and fully dark outside. For example if you are walking on a tree shaded path the glasses are going to lighten up as the trees block a lot of the UV light. If you were to have Category 3 sunglasses on it might make that environment too dark but with Photochromatic they just reacted less and give a nice comfortable light transmission without being too dark.

Thanks for this great video. It helps me choose from new transitions colors 😊. I've been using photochromic lenses for a long time. Because I have a prescription, I can't use regular sunglasses. My prescription sunglasses are awesome, but moving from outdoor to indoor requires changing glasses, which is why photochromic has been my go-to for years. Best of both worlds. Transitions lenses are fast and get darker, but they cost more than Blockz or the generic photochromic option. I would love to see a video comparing Blockz photochromic vs Transitions vs the new EyeQ photochromic.
Good info doc. I've been neglecting my eyes for several years by wearing reading glasses after loosing my prescription glasses, over the counter eye drops for dry and itching eyes when I think something else may be going on. After this neglect my eyes go on seeing like noble servants. Transition glasses my be worth a look no pun.

I order ZENNI photochromic lenses. I tried a pair also with blue light lens but could not tell how they benefit me. Just bought it because at the time it was the cheapest lens option. Now I order photochromic without blue light lens. I also order prescription sunglasses & Trivex for sports.
@@TheHi-T I have tried both Zenni's own photochromic and Transitions. I would say the Transitions are worth the extra money. They change faster and darker. I'm currently on Transitions Gen 8.
I've been wearing glasses for many, many years and Zenni has so far been my favorite glasses retailer (online or brick-and-mortar). Glasses from the eye doctor are too darn expensive for what you get!! Anyway, I've shied away from photochromic lenses mostly because I prefer my sunglasses to be a bit larger than my everyday glasses. But maybe I'll check out these new Gen S lenses from Zenni after I see my eye doctor later this week and she inevitably tells me I need a new prescription haha.

FYI: If you have a high prescription, ZENNI allows you to choose which index you prefer. I have been able to order Trivex 1.53 & 1.61. Other retails force me to order 1.74 high index lenses that have low optical clarity (low ABBE value). Yes, the lens will be thinnest, but why would I pay more for less clarity? Also restricting me from purchasing sports frames with impact restistant lenses.
Hi, does anti reflection coating reduces the transition capability of the lenses. Because, the older glass lenses used to get more darker without a coating.

Used to have 2 pair ( both lost ) that were great for both driving , as most blue light was stopped , without changeing the colors of anything being looked at . Im stll after 10 years lookng for a smlar pair .
My primary sunglasses for the last 4 years have been Transitions Drivewear which I've been very happy with. The lenses are multifocal and by default the Drivewear line are polarized (which I always make sure I get.) The lightest color of the lens is an olive green, then they shift to a copper color and finally brown is the darkest. But beware, these are sunglasses; they don't go clear like most transitions lenses.

I don't know if this topic fits on your channel but I wanted to report that since I started eating a carnivore diet for 5 months and now transitioning to an animal based low carb diet with omega 3 supplementation I've been surprised by a few things healing. First I notice that my floaters are gone! Next I noticed that my MGD feels so much better. I don't have any more dry eye symptoms upon waking or during the day. My eyes feel so normal I forget to put drops in. I'm still following eyelid cleaning protocols but only put warm eye masks on a few times a month now. I feel like my dry eyes are healing due to the nutrition in my diet and the high omega 3 I'm getting from fish, from supplements and from meat. I think diet can make a big difference. I wasn't eating a SAD diet before but I was getting a lot of carbs in my whole foods diet. The only thing I'm not sure of is why a higher carb diet was so bad for my eyes. I'm guessing because carbs can create inflammation in some people but they definitely don't cure inflammation.
Hey thanks for sharing! There are a few people who have posted similar experiences over the last year or so. I have been diving into published research on diet and various eye diseases for the last few months. Processed sugar/carbs are definitely not a health food...most research I find does suggest the opposite, that less animal products, particularly red meat is associated with better ocular health and less risk for disease, but there is some interesting results with intermittent fasting as well as some support for keto diets. I think a common denominator in many diets is elimination of many foods, some of which people could be sensitive too. For example, myself, I do not have celiac disease, but my eczema does flare up when I eat more breadstuffs - even whole wheat. I overall do better when eating more gluten free. But either way I am happy to hear you have found something that is working for you! I will continue to dig into the carnivore diet research and see if there is anything that could connect it to changes in vision/eye health. Hopefully I will have a video on it within a few months.

I have photochromic lenses in all my glasses by now. Suffer from light sensitivity due to mild keratoconus, so they're really helpful. Those ruby red lenses sure look great. 🔥❤ Now if only their purple amethyst Transitions were as saturated - I finally saw a pair in real life recently, and they're like 99 % grey'ish and 1 % purple. 😑😑
I use photochromic lenses for a while now. I started my journey with Transition and now I’m rocking Hoya. Here is my question: I’m considering photochromic lenses with polarisation, however I’m concerned about usability of these lenses in the office or even looking at my phone. How difficult will polarised lenses make my life?
That makes me happy! I don't have too much experience with Hoya although there is a factory near where I live. I am only familiar with the Transitions Xtractive Polarized lenses, which work great in the office and i have never had any issues on my phone.
My experience is that most polarisation in glasses does have some effect on screen use. I've used transition drivewear (polarised) since they first came out and worked in IT. For early LCD screens it was an issue. Now using drivewear or my Serengeti 555 or Sedona lens (photochromic and polarised) it isn't a major issue. But there are times it can be a problem. One trick you can try is to get a pair of decent polarised sunglasses and try them over your prescription glasses. Looks dumb but you will find out if it causes you a problem. And you get a decent pair of sunglasses 😎 Most screens these days use circular polarisation which is different than the planar used in glasses. Glasses mostly use planar as they are designed to reduce glare from horizontal surfaces like roads or water.
I had the transitions lens before and what I noticed is when I would go from the snow outside to a warm house they would darken. My question is why would it take going into an area with no direct sunlight, ultraviolet light to make them change, were the early versions heat activated and not UV activated?
Oh that does sound odd. I wonder if the heat, just made it easier for the crystals in the lens to change faster??? Otherwise I have never heard of a specific heat activation.
Is it the darkening of the lenses or the lens material itself that provides UV protection? Do eyeglass lenses, like car windshields, block UV light regardless of whether they're photochromic or not?
So sometypes of lens materials have UV blocking capabilities as a trait. Such as polycarbonate plastic for example. Car windshields have a type of film built into it which offers the UV blocking. I believe that the technology in the photochromic lenses offers the UV protection.
The biggest thing to look at is the transition to dark and back to clear. The Transitions Gen S is about twice as fast to go from dark to clear. I personally like my Transitions Xtractive but it takes them about 5-6 minutes to go from dark to clear. With the Transitions Gen S it’s pretty much clear in 2 minutes. In testing I saw it get to 74% light transmission at 2 minutes which is insanely quick when you realize a clear lens will be 90% light transmission.
My original "Reactions" photochromic glasses made of glass had the crystals embedded in the glass 1975 to 2005], are Transitions crystals embedded into the plastic lens or is it a lens covering? My last single vision Reactions are from 2001 and still work perfectly [glass]
Transitions are a branded line of photochromic technology - the photochromic change to adjust the light transmitted through the lens, where polarized tech helps reduce glare. The only problem i have is here in NZ we have lots of roads with patches of shade and bright sunshine. Also in some areas lots of narrow tunnels. The lenses dont change quickly enough and can make it dangerous for driving.
Do you mean polarized glasses lenses? Technically polarized filters always will come with some tint to them. Transitions Polarized are a unique lens that turns on polarization when exposed to UV light.
These lenses are indeed great, but they have one major flaw: they don't work well in hot weather! My Transitions lenses get nice and dark on cool, bright days. But on hot sunny summer days, they might only get 75% as dark. This is so annoying, that I'm considering moving back to my normal sunglasses. I had hoped that the newer lenses would overcome this problem. Maybe the most recent ones do?
My eye doctor told me that transition lenses don't offer the same level of sun protection as polarized sunglasses. Is this true? Also, are transition lenses compatible with blue light blocking lenses?
There is a great value to purchasing from a specialist shop, custom fitting, sometimes higher quality control, sometimes unique lens and frames options. Also just support for a local business. But it also depends on what you value and are looking for. Not always, but usually local eye clinics do cost a higher price, but you are paying for the in person help and professional experience.
Depends on the brand/ technology. The newer designs of Transitions lenses do filter a degree of blue light, especially the extra active technologies. I would check out their websites and see if you can find the amount of blue light it filters, sorry I don’t know the exact amount off hand.
Do photochromic lenses introduce any visual distortion- especially for those extremely nearsighted? I have them and under certain conditions, I detect artifacts when looking at straight lines and inside when lenses are still dark.
Hmm, I am not aware of that being induced by the photochromics specifically, perhaos it has to do with the individual lenses themselves. I will ask my optician friend if they have ever heard of that.
It is true that temperature affects how fast the molecules in the lenses change! Have you tried any of the new lenses from Transitions? The Xtra Active ones and the newer designs are made to still work very good in higher temps. Yey nano-technology.
@@DoctorEyeHealthYes in hot weather they do not go as dark as in cold weather. Good in cold bright Canadian winter days. In 100 degrees Fahrenheit they are never as good as “proper” sunglasses. Even the most recent incarnation two years ago which I bought.
I still think they work pretty good even in the heat. It might not be as dark as you get in the cold but it’s still great protection for the eyes even if it’s not down at a Category 3 but only Category 2.
@@TheCowthulu sunglasses that work less well in hot summer weather……… I have bought several pairs. I am always disappointed while boating in summer. Some may be satisfied but they are not great in hot sunny weather. At altitude in cold weather they go very dark and give good protection from UV. In a ski resort in southern Spain in late May they went almost black! In summer in eastern Canada at midday they just have a slight tint. This offers protection but, in my opinion, not enough.
For boating I really would go with something like a category 3 Maui Jim pair of sunglasses since I would also want something polarized for that situation. For me I went with the Transitions Xtractive because I own sunglasses but it’s not like I want to be going into the grocery store and changing glasses after I get inside. It’s also good for those times I forget my sunglasses.
Dear Doc is it possible ruining meibomiam glands with naviblef foam daily (0,002 tto) I have been using it for 40 days twice a day for 1 minute ( counting till 100 quickly ) massaging my eyelid but it dried out my skin so much and now I m afraid it damaged my glands
There is 1 study that suggests TTO could be damaging to tissue cells, but the study was exposing tissue cells for long period of time (like 15 minutes). Most people wont have allergic reactions to TTO unless it is over 5%, but some people are sensitive to it. It is not unusual for some formulations to dry out the skin and in those cases I try to find another brand to try. As far as damaged glands, best to consult a local eye care provider who has meibography scanning in their office.
Tge new Gen S said they would get darker, to a dark #3 std for sunglass. But I found out the Gen 8 is dark #3, too. I was disappointed the Gen S lead me to think they got darker than the Gen 8. They switch back amazingly fast, though. Also, the colors are supposed to be truer.
I purchased a pair of prescription glasses from Zenni about 2 years ago with their house brand photochromic lenses. Was somewhat disappointed the lenses do not darken to the level of sunglasses. The darkest they got was the equivalent of a medium tint. I'm told not all photochromic lenses are equal and for best results, i.e. darkens the most, Transitions would have been a better choice (but pricier).
I find the Zenni in house photochromics work well but I agree they do not get as dark as other designs. People who are not as light sensitive may still like them but for a vampire like myself, I need darker sunglasses haha.
I switched over to in house brands after I received a pair of Transitions that peeled on one lens. It completely fell off to make it a clear lens. Manufacturing defect. Transitions brand darken & clear quicker. I use the savings to buy sunglasses

I have been wearing photochromic glasses for so long I can't tell when they change colour let alone notice the slight tint when indoors, apart from when in bed I am wearing my glasses
Some XtraActive Transitions lenses do hold a slight color/ tint indoors because they are also activated by non UV light rays such as blue light that could come off of florescent lighting.
Really good question!!!! There is a whole subsection of research that is studying this. Mainly on the effects of different colors and light filters on the brain. Perhaps I can try to do a video on that!
Personally, I like gray the best because I don't like to have the color balance shifted or altered. Remember Blu-Blockers? They had dark glasses for wearing at night? Think they were invented by the police!
They do not "cure" color blindness, they just shift color perception to make some colors stand out more and make it easier to see subtle differences. There are some really good videos out there about them being a "scam" or at least their marketing is a bit overzealous.
It sucks that Gen S is not available for those of us that need bifocals. I can't adapt to progressive lenses, at least not the affordable versions. And I'm not spending a $600 premium to get a digital progressive that still makes me a bobblehead to find a sweet spot with crappy peripheral vision. Essilor should offer bifocals...
My boss have these lenses so I see them in action quiet often. At the same time it would annoy me that they always get dark when it’s sunny outside because sometimes I want to enjoy my surroundings without „wrong colour“.
It really would depend on the tint. The grey should stay pretty natural to the original color just toned down for brightness. I however would recommend looking at sunglasses since I find the tinted colors like brown give a pleasant feel while enhancing contrast.
Once you start to wear photochromic glasses you tend not to notice the change in colour, I tend to stick with grey or brown as they go the darkest, they also protect your eyes from sun damage

Yes, they have progressed! However, most photochromics still don't work great in the car. The Transitions XtraActive does work a bit in the car but the Transitions Drivewear is really what works the best for driving.

I have had one pair in which one lens failed after 3 years, my present pair gen7 are now over 7 years old, I do have a glass pair of "Reactions" about 25 years old , working perfectly, I wear my glasses all the time and am out in all weather conditions
Depending on where you purchase them, it can range. In my own experience, if you are buying from a local shop, it will probably be an additional 100 - 150 USD more. Sort of like buying a good pair of sunglasses - but you don't have to carry around prescription sunglasses with you everywhere. If you choose to buy glasses from an online shop, the prices may be cheaper, but the final price of course depends on the frame and other options.
I am considering this for my next pair...this was a super informative and helpful video! I currently just get a standard tinted pair form zenni for the car. Having just one pair would rock 🎉
The Gen S is amazingly fast to change. Generation 7 which was about 3-4 years ago took about six or seven minutes now it’s down to two minutes. The one minute mark though is really cool to see since people can look you in the eyes even if they are not clear at that point.
Oh really? Did you have an older XtraActive lens design? The much older designs would hold a faint tint - especially if they were a a few years old. With the newer lens designs I have never had any issues - even my Transitions Signature 8 lens from 2019 are still crystal clear indoors.

The Gen S would respond quickly but yeah that’s a situation where you need to have good response so probably flip ups would work best.

FYI: If you have a high prescription, ZENNI allows you to choose which index you prefer. I have been able to order Trivex 1.53 & 1.61. Other retails force me to order 1.74 high index lenses that have low optical clarity (low ABBE value). Yes, the lens will be thinnest, but why would I pay more for less clarity? Also restricting me from purchasing sports frames with impact restistant lenses.
Hi, does anti reflection coating reduces the transition capability of the lenses. Because, the older glass lenses used to get more darker without a coating.

My primary sunglasses for the last 4 years have been Transitions Drivewear which I've been very happy with. The lenses are multifocal and by default the Drivewear line are polarized (which I always make sure I get.) The lightest color of the lens is an olive green, then they shift to a copper color and finally brown is the darkest. But beware, these are sunglasses; they don't go clear like most transitions lenses.

Hey doctor, I have a question, is there any difference between the Transition Gen 8 and the EYEQLENZ from ZENNI, are they as dark as the Gen 8? do they get as dark as the Gen 8?
I don't know if this topic fits on your channel but I wanted to report that since I started eating a carnivore diet for 5 months and now transitioning to an animal based low carb diet with omega 3 supplementation I've been surprised by a few things healing. First I notice that my floaters are gone! Next I noticed that my MGD feels so much better. I don't have any more dry eye symptoms upon waking or during the day. My eyes feel so normal I forget to put drops in. I'm still following eyelid cleaning protocols but only put warm eye masks on a few times a month now. I feel like my dry eyes are healing due to the nutrition in my diet and the high omega 3 I'm getting from fish, from supplements and from meat. I think diet can make a big difference. I wasn't eating a SAD diet before but I was getting a lot of carbs in my whole foods diet. The only thing I'm not sure of is why a higher carb diet was so bad for my eyes. I'm guessing because carbs can create inflammation in some people but they definitely don't cure inflammation.
Hey thanks for sharing! There are a few people who have posted similar experiences over the last year or so. I have been diving into published research on diet and various eye diseases for the last few months. Processed sugar/carbs are definitely not a health food...most research I find does suggest the opposite, that less animal products, particularly red meat is associated with better ocular health and less risk for disease, but there is some interesting results with intermittent fasting as well as some support for keto diets. I think a common denominator in many diets is elimination of many foods, some of which people could be sensitive too. For example, myself, I do not have celiac disease, but my eczema does flare up when I eat more breadstuffs - even whole wheat. I overall do better when eating more gluten free.
But either way I am happy to hear you have found something that is working for you! I will continue to dig into the carnivore diet research and see if there is anything that could connect it to changes in vision/eye health. Hopefully I will have a video on it within a few months.

What does this mean?
I use photochromic lenses for a while now. I started my journey with Transition and now I’m rocking Hoya. Here is my question: I’m considering photochromic lenses with polarisation, however I’m concerned about usability of these lenses in the office or even looking at my phone. How difficult will polarised lenses make my life?
That makes me happy! I don't have too much experience with Hoya although there is a factory near where I live. I am only familiar with the Transitions Xtractive Polarized lenses, which work great in the office and i have never had any issues on my phone.
My experience is that most polarisation in glasses does have some effect on screen use. I've used transition drivewear (polarised) since they first came out and worked in IT. For early LCD screens it was an issue. Now using drivewear or my Serengeti 555 or Sedona lens (photochromic and polarised) it isn't a major issue. But there are times it can be a problem.
One trick you can try is to get a pair of decent polarised sunglasses and try them over your prescription glasses. Looks dumb but you will find out if it causes you a problem. And you get a decent pair of sunglasses 😎
Most screens these days use circular polarisation which is different than the planar used in glasses. Glasses mostly use planar as they are designed to reduce glare from horizontal surfaces like roads or water.
I had the transitions lens before and what I noticed is when I would go from the snow outside to a warm house they would darken. My question is why would it take going into an area with no direct sunlight, ultraviolet light to make them change, were the early versions heat activated and not UV activated?
Oh that does sound odd. I wonder if the heat, just made it easier for the crystals in the lens to change faster??? Otherwise I have never heard of a specific heat activation.
Is it the darkening of the lenses or the lens material itself that provides UV protection? Do eyeglass lenses, like car windshields, block UV light regardless of whether they're photochromic or not?
So sometypes of lens materials have UV blocking capabilities as a trait. Such as polycarbonate plastic for example. Car windshields have a type of film built into it which offers the UV blocking. I believe that the technology in the photochromic lenses offers the UV protection.
The biggest thing to look at is the transition to dark and back to clear. The Transitions Gen S is about twice as fast to go from dark to clear.
I personally like my Transitions Xtractive but it takes them about 5-6 minutes to go from dark to clear. With the Transitions Gen S it’s pretty much clear in 2 minutes. In testing I saw it get to 74% light transmission at 2 minutes which is insanely quick when you realize a clear lens will be 90% light transmission.
My new eyeglasses lens have uv protection, is it still necessary to buy a clip on sunglasses? Thanks!

My original "Reactions" photochromic glasses made of glass had the crystals embedded in the glass 1975 to 2005], are Transitions crystals embedded into the plastic lens or is it a lens covering?

The only problem i have is here in NZ we have lots of roads with patches of shade and bright sunshine. Also in some areas lots of narrow tunnels. The lenses dont change quickly enough and can make it dangerous for driving.

Do you mean polarized glasses lenses? Technically polarized filters always will come with some tint to them. Transitions Polarized are a unique lens that turns on polarization when exposed to UV light.
These lenses are indeed great, but they have one major flaw: they don't work well in hot weather! My Transitions lenses get nice and dark on cool, bright days. But on hot sunny summer days, they might only get 75% as dark. This is so annoying, that I'm considering moving back to my normal sunglasses. I had hoped that the newer lenses would overcome this problem. Maybe the most recent ones do?

There is a great value to purchasing from a specialist shop, custom fitting, sometimes higher quality control, sometimes unique lens and frames options. Also just support for a local business. But it also depends on what you value and are looking for. Not always, but usually local eye clinics do cost a higher price, but you are paying for the in person help and professional experience.

Depends on the brand/ technology. The newer designs of Transitions lenses do filter a degree of blue light, especially the extra active technologies. I would check out their websites and see if you can find the amount of blue light it filters, sorry I don’t know the exact amount off hand.
I'm sure the Gen S feature set included blue light filtering. Just a user not a pro.
Do photochromic lenses introduce any visual distortion- especially for those extremely nearsighted?
I have them and under certain conditions, I detect artifacts when looking at straight lines and inside when lenses are still dark.
Hmm, I am not aware of that being induced by the photochromics specifically, perhaos it has to do with the individual lenses themselves. I will ask my optician friend if they have ever heard of that.

Work great in colder weather. Not so great in hot weather. Great for skiing but not very dark on a hot tropical beach.
It is true that temperature affects how fast the molecules in the lenses change! Have you tried any of the new lenses from Transitions? The Xtra Active ones and the newer designs are made to still work very good in higher temps. Yey nano-technology.

I still think they work pretty good even in the heat. It might not be as dark as you get in the cold but it’s still great protection for the eyes even if it’s not down at a Category 3 but only Category 2.
@@TheCowthulu sunglasses that work less well in hot summer weather……… I have bought several pairs. I am always disappointed while boating in summer. Some may be satisfied but they are not great in hot sunny weather.
At altitude in cold weather they go very dark and give good protection from UV. In a ski resort in southern Spain in late May they went almost black! In summer in eastern Canada at midday they just have a slight tint. This offers protection but, in my opinion, not enough.
For boating I really would go with something like a category 3 Maui Jim pair of sunglasses since I would also want something polarized for that situation.
For me I went with the Transitions Xtractive because I own sunglasses but it’s not like I want to be going into the grocery store and changing glasses after I get inside. It’s also good for those times I forget my sunglasses.
Dear Doc is it possible ruining meibomiam glands with naviblef foam daily (0,002 tto) I have been using it for 40 days twice a day for 1 minute ( counting till 100 quickly ) massaging my eyelid but it dried out my skin so much and now I m afraid it damaged my glands
There is 1 study that suggests TTO could be damaging to tissue cells, but the study was exposing tissue cells for long period of time (like 15 minutes). Most people wont have allergic reactions to TTO unless it is over 5%, but some people are sensitive to it. It is not unusual for some formulations to dry out the skin and in those cases I try to find another brand to try. As far as damaged glands, best to consult a local eye care provider who has meibography scanning in their office.

Tge new Gen S said they would get darker, to a dark #3 std for sunglass. But I found out the Gen 8 is dark #3, too. I was disappointed the Gen S lead me to think they got darker than the Gen 8. They switch back amazingly fast, though. Also, the colors are supposed to be truer.
I purchased a pair of prescription glasses from Zenni about 2 years ago with their house brand photochromic lenses. Was somewhat disappointed the lenses do not darken to the level of sunglasses. The darkest they got was the equivalent of a medium tint. I'm told not all photochromic lenses are equal and for best results, i.e. darkens the most, Transitions would have been a better choice (but pricier).
That's because you have a cheaper brand of photochromic lenses.
Transitions are the best quality.
You get what you pay for.
I find the Zenni in house photochromics work well but I agree they do not get as dark as other designs. People who are not as light sensitive may still like them but for a vampire like myself, I need darker sunglasses haha.
I switched over to in house brands after I received a pair of Transitions that peeled on one lens. It completely fell off to make it a clear lens. Manufacturing defect. Transitions brand darken & clear quicker. I use the savings to buy sunglasses

I have used them before. One thing I didn't like is how they don't go back to 100% clear indoors. They always retain a hint of the coloring.

Some XtraActive Transitions lenses do hold a slight color/ tint indoors because they are also activated by non UV light rays such as blue light that could come off of florescent lighting.
I think Transition lenses with AR looks ugly when they are at their highest light transmittance or darkest. I wish people would do backside AR.

Really good question!!!! There is a whole subsection of research that is studying this. Mainly on the effects of different colors and light filters on the brain.

Personally, I like gray the best because I don't like to have the color balance shifted or altered. Remember Blu-Blockers? They had dark glasses for wearing at night? Think they were invented by the police!

What's the deal with those glasses that are suppose to "cure" color blindness.
They do not "cure" color blindness, they just shift color perception to make some colors stand out more and make it easier to see subtle differences. There are some really good videos out there about them being a "scam" or at least their marketing is a bit overzealous.
It sucks that Gen S is not available for those of us that need bifocals. I can't adapt to progressive lenses, at least not the affordable versions. And I'm not spending a $600 premium to get a digital progressive that still makes me a bobblehead to find a sweet spot with crappy peripheral vision. Essilor should offer bifocals...
My boss have these lenses so I see them in action quiet often. At the same time it would annoy me that they always get dark when it’s sunny outside because sometimes I want to enjoy my surroundings without „wrong colour“.
It really would depend on the tint. The grey should stay pretty natural to the original color just toned down for brightness.
I however would recommend looking at sunglasses since I find the tinted colors like brown give a pleasant feel while enhancing contrast.
Once you start to wear photochromic glasses you tend not to notice the change in colour, I tend to stick with grey or brown as they go the darkest, they also protect your eyes from sun damage

I use sunglasses with either a gradient tint or classic mirror tints. Photochromic lens does not activate when driving.
Yes, they have progressed! However, most photochromics still don't work great in the car. The Transitions XtraActive does work a bit in the car but the Transitions Drivewear is really what works the best for driving.
Why do some photochromic lenses develop cloudy areas and a fine network of cracks on the lenses?
Oh that would probably be a phenomenon called crazing. It usually happens when lenses are overheated, such as leaving on a hot car dashboard.

I have had one pair in which one lens failed after 3 years, my present pair gen7 are now over 7 years old, I do have a glass pair of "Reactions" about 25 years old , working perfectly, I wear my glasses all the time and am out in all weather conditions

Depending on where you purchase them, it can range. In my own experience, if you are buying from a local shop, it will probably be an additional 100 - 150 USD more. Sort of like buying a good pair of sunglasses - but you don't have to carry around prescription sunglasses with you everywhere. If you choose to buy glasses from an online shop, the prices may be cheaper, but the final price of course depends on the frame and other options.

My biggest issue with these glasses is how slowly they lighten up.
The Gen S is amazingly fast to change. Generation 7 which was about 3-4 years ago took about six or seven minutes now it’s down to two minutes. The one minute mark though is really cool to see since people can look you in the eyes even if they are not clear at that point.

I stopped using transition lenses as I didn't like the fact that even indoors they never went back to totally clear, so life was constantly "beige".
Oh really? Did you have an older XtraActive lens design? The much older designs would hold a faint tint - especially if they were a a few years old. With the newer lens designs I have never had any issues - even my Transitions Signature 8 lens from 2019 are still crystal clear indoors.
