    Photochromic lenses, often referred to as adaptive or transition lenses, are a remarkable innovation in the world of eyewear. These lenses undergo a transformation when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light, adapting to changing light conditions and providing optimal vision whether you're indoors or outdoors. Here, we delve into the differences between three notable variations: Transitions Generation 8, Transitions Xtractive, Transitions Xtractive Polarized and Transitions Drivewear.

    Hi Dr. Allan. I enjoyed watching this video in particular because, as an Optician, I dispense Transitions 8 lenses. Greater than 50% of all orders include Transitions. I am also a Certified Specialist. While there are many outstanding attributes, I find there are instances where they don't darken enough to MY satisfaction, and I own every variety. However, those who try them for the first time are always satisfied and repeat customers wouldn't wear anything else.

    Good summary - thanks. I find that Serengeti photochromic lenses are even darker (if a little slower). I used to have G15 Ray-Ban but Serengeti 555nm lenses are green (and change colour filtering as they get darker). I love the restful feeling when I put the Sedonna (magenta/rose). Plus I have wraparound frames. Only problem is that the cost of prescription lenses 😮 so I also have Transitions gen 8 signature and Drivewear in my glasses. I use contacts and can use the Serengeti.

    😊 Very Happy to Follow your videos as it helps me learn and understand improving my Severe Dry Eye Care for years following your content.
    I wanted to ask if you can make content about doing digital work on tabs, laptops or desktops and other alternatives. Which would be an ideal choice to work? And further where should we watch movies whether it's theater screens, tv's, desktops or other sources. Bcoz it's always a challenge to view or work upon content on various mediums of channels. It helps us to save our eye energies better with less eye wear and tear.
    Same can be informed about playing sports , swimming, driving and more activities. How to manage them with better practices or avoiding them for Better.

    Thank you! This video was tremendously helpful. I am looking at these glasses for my daughter, who is in remission from Burkitt-type non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. She is 16, and about to get her learner's permit, so will be driving soon. She really hates the color distortion on the Blokz blue light filtering lenses, so I think she would prefer the Gen 8, because they are perfectly clear indoors. However, I don't know what she's just going to have to get used to, now that she has to really be careful to protect herself following her short but extremely intense cancer treatment this past summer. What lenses would you say offer the maximum protection? Should we just get her a spare pair of polarized prescription sunglasses for when she drives?

      Thanks for sharing this and I wish your daughter the best. A transitions gen 8 May be the best for normal glasses wear but while driving the car, they won’t activate. So consider getting either a clip on pair of sunglasses or a dedicated sunglasses pair. Hope that helps.

    The first tip I would have for anyone looking for Translations lenses is first look at Sunglasses that might be displayed with the frames. Not that you are going to buy them but instead to see a few sunglass styles that work for you.
    Next look at the frames available for eyeglasses that are close to the sunglass styles you like. Often times sunglass frames are available in an eyeglass frame as well. When you try them on as eyeglasses you can see if you would also like them clear.
    Doing this will give you glasses that look natural when they are outdoors but that you also like the look of when it’s indoors. Why a lot of people don’t like transitions lenses is they picked frames that would never look like sunglasses and it just looks wrong when they are outside.

    Transitions Vantage are the most comfortable from indoors to outdoors and back. They don't make them anymore; but, the reddish/violet tint also seems to lessen the possibility of headaches from light sensitivity. Virtually clear inside. The transition to darker is magically unnoticeable (you will have to take them off to verify that they did indeed get darker). They don't change much at all in the car, and the variable polarization is minimal; but, all around comfort in all light conditions makes for a pleasant day, go-to pair. Essilor really should reconsider and bring them back.

    Dr. Allen. I would love your insight on my specific case of eye floaters. I have watched your videos on floaters and would love to hear your thoughts. I have constant eye floaters all across my field of vision. They never go away and I notice them in basically every setting 24/7. I do not experience flashes of light or the "curtain" effect you talk about in this video. I feel like you can give me good insight because like you, my eye floaters developed in my early 20's sometime around early 2020 at the age of 24. I remember looking into the sky and noticing a small floater. Around the time that my floaters developed, I was also dealing with what seemed like a constant headache. Eventually the headache went away, but the floaters - with what began as one small floater to being across my entire field of vision in months - remained and are still bothering me. I also see small little sparks of light (almost like fireflies that are most noticeable when I look at the sky). Every now and then I'll see random flashes either white dots/sparks as well as black/brown dots. Trying to figure out what is going on and why I went from zero floaters to a field of vision full of lasting, constant floaters within months. Any insight will help. Thanks.

      Hi, I’m 57 and have had floaters in both eyes since a teenager. Most noticeable in bright light and I’ve just accepted them. A week ago in my right eye I started getting flashes of light and then a few more much more prominent floaters with a headache that lasted for a few days. I phoned my GP but they suggested going to the optician. The optician examined my eyes and said I have posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). Fortunately I don’t have a retinal tear or retinal detachment which gives the curtain in your vision or showers of floaters and is more serious. The vitreous in the eye shrinks back with age and leaves the back of the eye causing flashes and floaters in some people. It was scary but the flashes stopped after 3 days for me but I am left with very visible floaters in my right eye which I’m told may improve. I’m short sighted and wear contacts (although currently planning to get transitions in Oakley’s too hence being here). Apparently PVD is more commonly in short sighted people like me.

    Looks like none of these incluidng the gen 8 go properly clear they all seem to have a fair bit of residual tint, Zeiss photofusion X is better in that respect goes totally clear and also seems to be quicker getting dark and then clear again. I think they have nicer colours too e.g. their blue really is nice vivid blue whereas transitions is more of a grey than a blue. Saying that I don't think any of these transitions style lenses get properly dark under normal use. I've only seen my Photofusion X go properly dark when held under a UV test lamp and not out in the real world!

    XTRActive Grey with Fire Red Mirror Coating
    Pros
    + All visible light wavelengths activate the XTRAactive vs. UV activates the Transitions Gen8
    + Great for outdoor sports and driving, use them everyday for walking and running outside
    + Become much darker than Transitions Gen8, even more so when below 70 F outside
    + Better than Transitions Gen8 for outdoor activities and driving
    + Quick to darken and lighten, still work great after 1 year of daily use
    Cons
    - Prefer not to use indoors, too much light attenuation and too many internal reflections from indoor light sources
    - Try not to use these outside at night because of internal reflections from vehicle lights, street lights, etc.
    - Still usable after dusk, but prefer to wear Transitions Gen 8 or non-Transitions lenses

    I have been wearing progressive bifocals for 5 years. Visionworks always tells me I cannot get transitions because my Rx is too strong. Is that even a thing, or should I try getting glasses online or from a different optical place?

    I purchased a pair of transition lense glasses at Warby Parker but they didn't tell me which of the 4 you mention they are, how can I find out, do they sell the basic? I'm finding that my glasses don't get nearly dark enough outside or when I'm driving, I'm having to squint while wearing them,which is frustrating. Unfortunately, I can't return them now because it's past the return/warranty.

      @DoctorEyeHealth  10 месяцев назад +2

      Sorry to hear that they are not dark enough in the car (common issue with some photochromic lenses). I just checked Warby Parker and it looks like they have their own brand of photochromic lenses and they are not the "transitions" brand. So they may not work in the car the way Xtractive ones work, maybe clip on sunglasses?

    • @G.Photogirl
      @G.Photogirl 10 месяцев назад

      @DoctorEyeHealth Thank you for your reply and looking into Warby's lenses, I really appreciate it! It's funny because they told me that they were Transitions. Anyway, I will either try clip ons or look into getting Wayfarer Ray Ban sunglasses at a retailer.

    I’m going to try some. I ordered a pair of glasses with zeiss photofusion sapphire blue and they suck. Does not get dark at all. More like John Lennon type pothead lightly tinted. They were also my first pair of progressives and I hate that. Can’t adjust to them and don’t really need it anyway. Going to switch back to single vision with extractive.

      I've been a big fan of the concept of photochromic lenses over the years, but I have found that they always seem to lose the ability to transition too quickly. I often keep a pair of sunglasses for up to two years and the photochromic lenses that I've used in the past never seem to retain the ability to transition that long. When they make a lens that they guarantee will keep transitioning through at least a couple years of use, I'll go back to them.

    Pah, None of these help me as a School Bus driver lol.. I have to be able to go from dark sunglasses (for that morning and afternoon sun in my face) to clear - to see what I am doing inside the bus or to either side of the bus. What I do now is fit over sun glasses that I lift up and down as needed.. What I want is a tap of a button to turn the glasses dark and tap again to instantly make them clear again.
    I do think this is possible with LCD type technology, but no one has implemented it into a wearable glasses format.
    Someone get on that.. drivers that wear glasses need good solutions. Flip up sunglasses just plain suck and break too quickly. Fit over sunglasses is the current best solution(for me), but that is a whole 2nd pair of glasses you have to keep track of.
    Having dedicated prescription sunglass is only good if you are not needing to go from dark to clear quickly and multiple times in short periods of time.
