This song makes me emotional too for the same reason, and I came to listen to it again today because my sister died yesterday morning and here I am crying again. Peace.

At 75, a masterpiece indeed. The healing continues and the work gets even harder. Not that I would trade it for anything. Cheers for today and the tomorrows that will become todays.

My dad was a river- sailor. The day of his funeral, after he was put to rest, i went to the river running by my hometown, on which he had spent half of his life, and sat there for 2- 3 hours, just watching it flow. Now, i didnt shed a tear at the funeral- but the next day that tune came up, while i was having coffee in a hotel lobby, early morning. I've heard the song before, but never paid much attention to the lyrics. This time it made me weep like a small child. But, at the same time, gave me some comfort
Mina Faezy Google this song and you’ll see this song was written by Sting as a tribute to his late father, with memories of the town he grew up and his desire to bury his father at sea. The whole album it’s from (‘The Soul Cages’) is a sombre affair based around loss (I believe his mother had also died not long before this) and dealing with grief. He had a difficult relationship with his father but I’ve read that they shared a wonderful moment on his deathbed, when they held hands for the first time since childhood.
@@SiLatics56: wow!! I love Sting but didn’t know this!!! 😳 thank you sooo much for sharing this so well!! 😌😍❤️💔❤️ ✨🌟 I just FINALLY got to see Sting live about 5 & 4 years ago & along with Peter Gabriel!!! Sooo amazing 🤩!! 🥁🎹🎸🎤💙🤍
I agree... It's the quintessential Sting track. It also brings back some amazing vibes for me personally but that's what makes music special. It's like a time machine....
The Soul Cages is an amazing album, which kept me company in a very challenging period of my life. I was 17 when it was released, and very confused, and one of the (few) anchors of my life was music like this. Thank you
In "All This Time," Sting takes me on a journey through my own reflections and experiences. As I listen to the song, I immerse myself in the poignant tale of a shipwreck and the impact it has had on my life. As the ship goes down, I find myself sifting through the wreckage, trying to make sense of the tragedy that has unfolded. I delve into deep introspection, questioning my own mortality and the passage of time. I am overwhelmed by a sense of loss and longing for understanding. The chorus echoes in my mind: "All this time, the river flowed endlessly to the sea." I realize that life continues to move forward, regardless of personal struggles and heartache. Time marches on, never waiting for anyone, and I must confront the fleeting nature of existence. Throughout the song, I search for solace and meaning amidst the chaos. I contemplate the interconnectedness of the past, present, and future, yearning to comprehend the significance of it all. It becomes a personal quest to come to terms with life's transitory nature. To me, "All This Time" serves as a poignant reminder for me to cherish the present, to embrace the fleeting moments that make up my life. It urges me to reflect on my own experiences, the passing of time, and the fragility of all things. Through the song, I find solace in accepting the uncertainties of life and discovering meaning within them. Easily one of the best songs of all time 🙂
So much to love about this song. As a drummer, I love how Manu Katche puts a snare hit on the downbeat of measure four in each verse cycle. A little quirk that kicks the groove in the butt, almost unnoticeably. Manu's playing here is propulsive but spare, driving yet tasteful, and always groovy. A mix of how Stewart Copeland and Vinny Colauita would approach this song.
David, I could not agree with you more about the brilliance of Manu Katché’s drumming on this track, and the power of that one extra snare hit. But I think that snare hit happens on beat 1 of measure 3 of the 4 bar cycle in verse 1, and on beat 1 of measure 1 in subsequent verses. And pay no mind to the idiot above who knows nothing about great drumming.
@@nsubhedar you are absolutely right! Then at 3:00 he briefly goes back to placing it in bar 3 before going full Pretty Woman at 3:15. The only other drummer that comes to mind who does this unusual displacement of snare and bass in an otherwise conventional beat is Mick Fleetwood. And I don’t mind the commenter above - sometimes music nerds need a little ribbing
Sting grew up across from the ship yard where the majority of men worked including his own dad. This song is all about that reality. Sting had respect for this but knew one day he had to get out of there !!
Am I alone really appreciating Stings comedic timing and campiness in this video? So many subtle little facial reactions and touches he does .. the funny nod after he first says “allll this time” like ta daaa.. or singing into the wrench for a moment?

I remember when this song came out in 91. I was working as an announcer at 5CS Port Pirie, South Australia and was not a fan of Sting or Police but this song captured my imagination. The back story is that he had been contracted to record a new album. Sting had the music but not the lyrics and effectively had writers block. Stings own father from memory was dying at the time. Sting talked to a friend about his writers block and was advised 'you're a story writer, write what you know'. Hence 'All this time'. I'm now working in talkback in Adelaide, South Australia and play a song before I finish. I played this just the other morning as it's son powerful on so many levels. It was also part of inspiration of me taking my children to UK and walking on Hadrians Wall in 2008 to give them perspective. Love it. Thanks Sting.
Mixing this song with such a seemingly upbeat video is a work of genius. The whole Soul Cages album may be the most powerful tribute to a dead parent I've ever listened to.

"Men go crazy in congregations": Here the singer expresses his view that assemblies of people brought together around faith - or around any subject of strong emotions and beliefs, like politics - run the risk of, well, going crazy, whether through extremism, perversion of the original message, or becoming a vehicle for personal gain by some (Sting talks a lot about this in interviews and other public remarks as well as in his lyrics). "They only get better one by one": Here the singer contrasts the above observation by claiming that true self-improvement and inner peace, the same things that many people seek by attaching themselves to religion or other great causes, are actually best achieved by introspection, turning inward and focusing on individual pursuits and goals instead.

“Teachers told the Romans built this place. They built a wall and a temple and an edge of the empire garrison town. They lived and they died. They prayed to their gods, but the stone gods did not make a sound. And their empire crumbles 'till all that was left Were the stones the workmen found.” Love this part of the song. It hits powerfully.
One of my favourite song when I was in Toronto, Canada in 1991... Every morning I listened this from Radio on the way to routine activities ... Time flies
Hadrian's Wall, Newcastle, England - Sting's homeland! When I realized this song was about his homeland, I grinned from ear to ear cause it was about his birthplace and that is important to remember. This is one of my fav song's by him, along with Fields Of Gold, Fragile and I'm So Happy, I Can't Stop Crying. I hope he makes some new songs cause that would really make me smile!
Hey, Mr. Sting, I'll bury my old man, one of your black crows, who was a priest who did a LOT OF GOOD IN THIS WORLD, in the expanse of the sea and all of its extensions that you suggest in this great song. Go crazy in your conception of congregations, they and their prayer keep you and yours acceptable and capable so keep on keeping on. My dad is now with the choir invisible along with HIS dad. Just don't damn the lot of priests who do a lot of good work in this world.
Not only is this one of my favourite Sting tunes, but its an incredibly poetic, warm, bittersweet and loving eulogy to his father and his hometown. You can literally picture every image in your head with ease. The importance of saying goodbye, the appreciation of the last rights yet the naivety of "blessed are the poor" and his persepective of the inherent pointlessness of religions old and current with "fussing and flapping" and stone gods not making a sound. The mentor, the apprentice, the ancient and new, "sad shire horses and sodium lights". The absolutely lovely way he references his father "heard the old man laughing" and would like to just see him right, by laying him to rest in the moving water of his town. The tune itself is jaunty and upbeat despite the deep and dark tone of the lyrics, but it works. Mandolin, bass, pizzicato, brass and all subtly blended. It's a perfect 10 and faultless, My one issue? I only saw this video for the first time last week and it simply does no justice to the tone of the song. It's too primary coloured, fake and silly. Something along "In a lifetime" by Clannad would have been a better tone.
For someone who fancies himself as a bit of an intellectual, I'm surprised you didn't notice that the video clearly draws on the aesthetics of the theatre of the absurd, and has a feel and texture to it not dissimilar to a play by Eugene Ionesco.
@@jamesjarrett52 There even seems to be a Rosencrantz and Guildernstern (from Shakespeare's play Hamlet) kind of quality to the two priests in the video. Guarding the faith, as it were?
@@stevestruthers6180 Ironically of course R&G were total non entities as you will know and ‘ hoist with their own petard ‘ when Hamlet saw through their facade !!
I was working for the sound company when Sting came to Hawaii in 1992. He opened with this song and it sounded amazing. Best concert i have ever heard to this day
All this time, we conquered the world, and we came up with war, government, taxes, and work that never ends. In some ways, I think the cave man had more freedom.
This song is about a boy who wants to bury his father at sea over the objections of two priests. It's a satire of rituals - the priests think the man should be buried according to their practices. Sting used the river to represent continuity. Civilizations and structures can come to an end, but rivers are always there. Most of the images are based on things Sting encountered when he was growing up.
I looked out across The river today I saw a city in the fog and an old church tower Where the seagulls play I saw the sad shire horses walking home In the sodium light I saw two priests on the ferry October geese on a cold winter's night And all this time, the river flowed Endlessly to the sea Two priests came round our house tonight One young, one old, to offer prayers for the dying To serve the final rite One to learn, one to teach Which was the cold wind blows Fussing and flapping in priestly black Like a murder of crows And all this time, the river flowed Endlessly to the sea If I had my way I'd take a boat from the river And I'd bury the old man, I'd bury him at sea Blessed are the poor, for they shall inherit the earth Better to be poor than a fat man in the eye of a needle And as these words were spoken I swore I hear The old man laughing 'What good is a used up world and how could it be Worth having' And all this time the river flowed Endlessly like a silent tear And all this time the river flowed Father, if Jesus exists, Then how come he never lived here The teachers told us, the Romans built this place They built a wall and a temple, an edge of the empire Garrison town, They lived and they died, they prayed to their gods But the stone gods did not make a sound And their empire crumbled, 'til all that was left Were the stones the workmen found And all this time the river flowed In the falling light of a northern sun If I had my way I'd take a boat from the river Men go crazy in congregations But they only get better One by one One by one...

"men go crazy in congregations; they only get better one by one" best line ever
why? explain it
"Men go crazy in congregations": Here the singer expresses his view that assemblies of people brought together around faith - or around any subject of strong emotions and beliefs, like politics - run the risk of, well, going crazy, whether through extremism, perversion of the original message, or becoming a vehicle for personal gain by some (Sting talks a lot about this in interviews and other public remarks as well as in his lyrics).

I agree..yes yes yes. On so many levels
i am in love with that background guitar line. Just amazing
One of the funniest music videos ever-- and the song's about him trying to deal with his father's death!
“Teachers told the Romans built this place.
They built a wall and a temple and an edge of the empire garrison town.
They lived and they died.
They prayed to their gods, but the stone gods did not make a sound.
And their empire crumbles 'till all that was left
Were the stones the workmen found.”
Love this part of the song. It hits powerfully.
Bin beileibe kein Sting Fan, aber ich liebe diesen Song! 👂❤

Some history, a philosophy of life and a great tune, in four minutes...
The genius of Sting!
Toujours comme la première fois. Une délice!!!!!!!
Just don't damn the lot of priests who do a lot of good work in this world.
dont take lyrics so seriously
he's playing with words, it's not an autobiography
Simon Robeyns Thanks. So true what you say.
David Whitehouse Don't worry!
Have a good evening!
It's a perfect 10 and faultless,
My one issue? I only saw this video for the first time last week and it simply does no justice to the tone of the song. It's too primary coloured, fake and silly. Something along "In a lifetime" by Clannad would have been a better tone.
For someone who fancies himself as a bit of an intellectual, I'm surprised you didn't notice that the video clearly draws on the aesthetics of the theatre of the absurd, and has a feel and texture to it not dissimilar to a play by Eugene Ionesco.
It's a recreation of a famous scene in a Marx Brothers movie. I don't know nothin' about no Ionescu. ruclips.net/video/8ZvugebaT6Q/видео.html
Not sure all ‘ religion ‘ is pointless !
I truly believe in Christ, it’s denominations that are the problem !!
Thank you, Gordon.
I was working for the sound company when Sting came to Hawaii in 1992. He opened with this song and it sounded amazing. Best concert i have ever heard to this day
Really that's so awesome 👍
Men go crazy in congregation; they only get better one by one ... one by one ... one by one.
All this time, we conquered the world, and we came up with war, government, taxes, and work that never ends. In some ways, I think the cave man had more freedom.
🤘 YES ... Belgium.🎈.
The world is peace, love, music, the kiss fron italy
This song is about a boy who wants to bury his father at sea over the objections of two priests. It's a satire of rituals - the priests think the man should be buried according to their practices.
Sting used the river to represent continuity. Civilizations and structures can come to an end, but rivers are always there.
Most of the images are based on things Sting encountered when he was growing up.
fakeaorta
Thank You
Many years later......thanks for the information.
@@trdaniel37 So you have been waiting....... All This Time... for an answer? ;-)
@@Fakeaorta time is a human construct
No waiting
It's all now :))))
Are you sure?
I remember when they use to play this song on the radio all the time. Now they don't. For some reason that makes me very sad.
"Blessed are the poor, for they shall inherit the earth"
This is beautiful.
....Matthew 5:5....
That of course is from The Beatitudes .
Great video, great song
I looked out across
The river today
I saw a city in the fog and an old church tower
Where the seagulls play
I saw the sad shire horses walking home
In the sodium light
I saw two priests on the ferry
October geese on a cold winter's night
And all this time, the river flowed
Endlessly to the sea
Two priests came round our house tonight
One young, one old, to offer prayers for the dying
To serve the final rite
One to learn, one to teach
Which was the cold wind blows
Fussing and flapping in priestly black
Like a murder of crows
And all this time, the river flowed
Endlessly to the sea
If I had my way I'd take a boat from the river
And I'd bury the old man,
I'd bury him at sea
Blessed are the poor, for they shall inherit the earth
Better to be poor than a fat man in the eye of a needle
And as these words were spoken I swore I hear
The old man laughing
'What good is a used up world and how could it be
Worth having'
And all this time the river flowed
Endlessly like a silent tear
And all this time the river flowed
Father, if Jesus exists,
Then how come he never lived here
The teachers told us, the Romans built this place
They built a wall and a temple, an edge of the empire
Garrison town,
They lived and they died, they prayed to their gods
But the stone gods did not make a sound
And their empire crumbled, 'til all that was left
Were the stones the workmen found
And all this time the river flowed
In the falling light of a northern sun
If I had my way I'd take a boat from the river
Men go crazy in congregations
But they only get better
One by one
One by one...
My nigga, i dont know what was on your mind when you expressed your comment but i do feel you, reminds me of me when i listen to, my philosophy , by krs -1
Thanx man
"One to learn, one to teach."
"Always two there are, a master and an apprentice."
@@spaceflight1019 Fussing and flapping in priestly black indeed.

I’m listening to Sting All This Time early January 2023 Las Vegas Nevada
This tune takes me back to middle school
I love this man
Brilliant lyrics. Probably the peak of his solo career.
what an amazing song, the backround melody reminds me a little bit of the cure 😃
Omg!! That’s what I thought too!! Which song do you mean? I just can’t figure it out…but you’re right
I wont lie if I say.... best Sting song
This video is a masterpiece of depth & lightness. Amusing, kinda furious and hopeful. Cameos all around, and messages... amazing
