"Installing Chrome" and "having more control over privacy" are two incompatible sentences.
You realise most browsers are literally rehoused chrome?
@@cine-ish no, most browsers are rehoused chromium, the open-source base of Chrome, without interactions with Google. Open-source is a needed condition to trust a browser.
Just defeated the whole purpose of adding Lineage OS by using Google Chrome.
@@rallealyt chromium is still a Google product end of thr day.
@@cine-ishso is aosp which lineage os base is from. So does that mean without gapps lineage os is not a privacy os?🤦
Google and other companies could easily offer longer software support, this is just another part of planned obsolescence.
This is a great video, it will help people keep their devices longer and ultimately help the environment!
Yeah so it's not down to them unfortunately
I'll use Google as an example here because I've read on why they do what they do
It all boils down to how long Qualcomm is willing to provide updates to phones using their chips. Most OEMs usually bargain for up to 3yrs which makes it impossible to deliver silicon updates after eol
Did you notice Google now guarantees at least 5yrs from the Pixel 6 onwards instead of the usual 3?
That's because Google now mainly controls every aspect of the chip
@@themannyzaur Very true, thank you!
My old nexus 5x bricked after 2 years and the fix was to change a single line of code from true to false. They never released an official fix. Google can eat shit, im getting an iphone se to replace my pixel 6 pro.
My sister is using my old iphone 7 to this day with no issues.
I've been through 3 nexus/pixels in that time as in they broke
The people behind projects like that make me feel so proud of Open Source community. So much hard work. As an iOS user, I hope it could be possible to do something like that on Old devices anytime sooner or later.
I wouldn't hold my breath
I mean iPhones already have 6/7 years of updates. at that point just get a new phone
@@Moli05 Well,I get your point. Nobody keeps the same phone for so long, but it´s still necessary to find uses for old hardware. Even a basic usage as a 2ndary device is far better than just becoming e-waste.
Jailbreak 😀
@@Moli05 and iPhone uses the same design for 3 year's so using it for 7 years makes sense lol
I actually switched to a LOS-based ROM, CrDroid, just a week after receiving my Xiaomi Redmi Note 11. I couldn't stand MIUI, not even for that brief period, so the change was a great decision. Also, LineageOS added an amazing feature called Charging Control, which allows you to set a limit to your battery percentage while charging, even if you leave it plugged in all night! Personally, I use 80% as it aligns with the 20-80 rule that I follow.
How are you liking crDroid? I just installed it on a Pixel 7. Been trying to find a nice rom to daily drive.
yo bro same device note 11 with crdroid
When you installed Lineage OS, was your device "certified" from the start? Because I installed Lineage OS in my Poco F3, and when I went to play store, it said my device was not certified...
@@re_tomori549 There must be some problem with your gapps file, or try clearing storage & cache from play store.
@@superterrificthuggyhour6008 bro derpfest and crdroid are the best lineageos based roms
Honestly if tech companies truly cared for the so-called "environment" they can focus more on fixing software and make things lighter overall. Let the user choose what they want. If they want the latest updates fine, if they want a simple and clean UI so be it! Imagine the waste and pollution that could reduce if people could keep using their old phones. I'm currently using my S22 Ultra and got lineage os running on my Galaxy A7 from 2017 and boy it worked so well. Yes certain apps are slow but I manage to download the older versions APK for example I use Google maps from 2019 and it was lighting fast, no lag at all. The battery could easily last an entire day. Incredible stuff.
@@Faizan29353 Exactly, and it's not wrong either. Just the fact that they're so full of it
I just installed Lineage OS on my Pixel 2 XL earlier this month and this video opened my eyes to some customizability that I was unaware of. Thank you!
I'm currently running LineageOS 18 on a Samsung S5. The S5 is actually a pretty decent phone, but it's always been hobbled by Samsung's bloated TouchWiz interface. With LineageOS, it feels like a brand new phone! It's astounding how much quicker and responsive it is now. I certainly like the extra settings options it has now. It's nice that the display settings has built in options for dimming the screen at night. I was impressed that when I paired it with my Bluetooth headphones, it would show their power level! In the past several months that I've been using it, I have noticed some minor glitches (largely to do with how it handles recent apps). There's been no major crashes or data loss. Despite a few small bugs, it's still a much better experience than the original factory software. I'm pretty happy with it!
Yes lucky S5 is one of the few well supported phone for lineageOS. Note 4, from same generation is not supported , and even though my Note 4 can be bootloader unlocked and flashed with custom recovery, there is no lineageOS version that works on it. There are unofficial lineageOS release, but I tried it and wifi/radio does not work, so I had to abaondon it.
How's the battery life I want to put lineage on note 10 plus
@@aidhengilbertmusic Battery life seems pretty good so far. It's certainly not worse than the original software. I'm not a very heavy phone user. I also imagine that the spare batteries I have for my S5 are getting a bit old, so it probably balances out.
From my experience, Lineage OS and Pixel Experience OS are probably my favorite options! PE gives you that Pixel-ish experience (as the name suggested) without hassle. Lineage OS however definitely wins in the stability and speed category!
Lineage wins also in the software updates. Every week, never fails. Professional team!
I tried lineage os 19 which was a night mare for OnePlus 6t. Moved to pixel experience 13 and was much better.. the quality of ROM also depends on the quality of android os and 12 was far worse than 13.
@@nabeelkh i have a oneplus 6T and am about to flash pixel experience 13! do you have ANY thoughts or notes about how it is, anything bad?
@@spaceman-pe5je just yolo it
I'm currently using pixel experience on my OnePlus 7 Pro. And it's fantastic! I would recommend checking this out on other devices too!
Am currently using an iPhone xs and thinking of switching to oneplus 7pro with a custom rom, any advice for me?

Currently using LineageOS 18.1 on Xiaomi Redmi Note 8. The different between that and default OS is mindblowing. Before MiUI make the phone near unusable with lagged interface even before starting an apps. Now it is smooth as new
Do you feel the camera results to be different?
What lineage OS version you recommend for redmi note 3 ? I have one lying around with buggy miui

@@Libra41093 yes the default camera sucks, but i use gcam + google photo to edit. The result are better than miui.
Had Cyanogenmod back in the days on my old phone and now LineageOS with root on my OnePlus 8 Pro. Runs incredibly smooth. With so many optimizations, like the ease to select audio outputs and the general smooth feeling. Love it!
have u tried nameless aosp on your 8 pro?

@@M3dicayne oxygen os camera, haptic feedback improved and some extra features that are quite useful
@@MZRTMusic254 Haha, it feels better than a new phone. I can literally let it sit on my table for 4-5 days and lost maybe 50% battery. If I use it for browsing and stuff, it takes around two days. But it's no Sim card in it and except for Wi-Fi and GPS, it's in flight mode.
Thanks for sharing. Would you recommend this for a Note10+ over the stock Samsung OS/Apps, or is there any way of adding the One UI on top of LineageOS?
Hi, first of all, nice video, it's interesting to see these kind of proyects to extend the lifespan of a device, but would you recommend at least try it for low range devices?
I'm curious about the performance, I have some old basic phones lying around and would like to see if lineage os will give a new life
I've been using LineageOS since 2016 on more than ten devices. Certain hardware/software features might not be present such as speaker drivers (samsung devices sound bad on AOSP ROMs) or camera processing, but it might be worth the trade-off especially if it's running a heavily skinned OS.
back in the day I had a Samsung S5 and rocked Lineage OS happily. Love this community. (btw the head of Lineage os, "haggertk" used to be the mantainer for my device :) )
lineage is what brought life to my note 2. Lineage os coming back strong 💪💪💪
This reminds me of Neverware and CloudReady OS, they were the best OpenSource ChromeOS-like experience out there to give new life to old computers, that is, until Google bought them, and now, the project has become ChromeOS Flex, not a bad ending though, it has more real support from Google and continues to give a new lease to old hardware, never the less, I have flash a few phones and tablets with Lineage OS and I can tell it's a great experience using it, it has nothing to miss from stock Android, great video and thanks for your hard work.
The problem with custom roms are that stability and bugless experience are pretty much hit or miss.
motorola does the same, it uses stock android, and add their own gestures, and also the wifi and internet button are also seperated, and customisable icons too.
Please keep making such videos for lineage os. I am just waiting for my warranty to get over and I will boot lineage os on my Motorola edge 30.
awesome video, I had no intention of charging up my Galaxy S8 to tinker with it, now you got me interested and if I brick it oh well I have a few other smart phones my family gave me being the tech guy.
Project Elixir OS is another custom ROM that I use, and it's even more of a pixel experience then Lineage OS what I would have previously preferred (it includes all google apps and pixel goodies)
Don't they have a literal kill switch if u mess up in Adb shell
Thank You Damien for your video on Lineage OS. I have a Pixel 3 Xl. How do you feel about putting Lineage OS on it? Thanks for your advice. 🙂
I've been using the Lineage OS or Lineage based ROMs since it was launched and I'm contributing it as proofreader. Pretty Light weight than AOSP, more private. I really like some Google Apps AOSP features, like google message or gcam, but I can still install it as third-party apps. I hope it will be more developed on UI or function. Love Lineage ❤️.
Hi I'm using lineage os 19, on my s10 5g. I want to update to lineage os 20 but I'm not sure if it's compatible, I don't see anything available update on the settings page. Is os 20 available for all devices?
@@hamedayokunle2747updates for Lineage OS or pretty much any custom ROMs depends on your device maintainer wether if they feel like to continue to keep maintaining the updates or discontinue it. Also you can try to find the unofficial Lineage OS 20 version for your device if available
(Pardon my broken English)
my Xiaomi Mi5 from 2016 still have support LineageOS. Love this os, stable and weekly update. Even now I'm still get android 12 on my 2016 phone.
PixelExperience 💕 I'm constantly thinking to try Lineage for a long time seeing its legacy.
I love LineageOS. Thanks to it I got three extra years of use from a Galaxy S3, and currently on a third extra year of use on a Oneplus 3. Next one will be a Oneplus 7 Pro. There were some bugs here and there, but nothing that would make a device unusable.
One "downside" of it is that the maintainers do not always manage to support devices for as long as one would like. Not holding that against any of the people behind the project, just an observation and something to keep in mind when deciding to switch over.
Can't you use the S3 still?
@@dinozaurpickupline4221 Sadly no, its display died a while back. Along with the worn out battery, a repair was much too expensive to consider. Lasted quite a while though, total of 6 years I believe, had it since its launch. For the price of the repair I got a very good condition used Oneplus 3, still going strong to this day. I miss those days to be honest, now the market is all screwed up unfortunately.
If you are on OnePlus 7 I would recommend Paranoid Android
@@darkfrost315 Thanks for the suggestion. I've not tried any different roms since Lineage implemented their OTA update function. It saves me a lot of time and hassle. Also I like the option of a rom without the Google apps.

I am glad you mentioned mobile payments, because I wouldn't have thought of it, even tho I'm pretty much dependent on it
Hello, can anyone please guide me on the steps to flash this OS on my pixel 4xl?
Does lineageOS (or any other custom ROM for that matter) support actual 5G on 5G capable phones, or is it limited to LTE?
Great vid! Please do a vid that flashes LineageOS on the new Amazon Fire Max 11 tablet. I think the premium version tablet would make a great de-Googlefy & de-Amazonfy PC replacement.
I really loved custom roms back in the days, but sadly the miss of banking app support is a no go for me and I am not a fan of this cat and mouse game for magisk and so on
I just installed LoS 20 on my old Note 8. It feels so good to still be able to update. Im currently using it as my switch game downloader 😂
Is there the possibility to get App indicators for unread messages in LineageOS? Didn't find it till now. Would be a nice Feature to see how many unread messages in e.g. Signal.
Can I use this with my aging tablet? It is struggling to do basic tasks and it's a little annoying
I searched for a custom ROM for my OnePlus 7 Pro for over a year, checking monthly, but couldn’t find Pixel Experience or LineageOS. Despite even changing to a new, original battery, there were no updates, so I sold it. Sadly, within six months after selling, both Pixel Experience and LineageOS released new updates for the device. I now use Pixel devices and am quite happy with them, but I still miss my OnePlus 7 Pro, which I consider the best phone in the world.❤
Hardworking RUclipsr....All the best for future 🎉
Oh wow, I never knew about these features in LineageOS! Seems like something I'm going to have to check out, I just have one question, does it have the 2-button navigation! Biggest feature I've missed!
late rep, yes, full nav, 3button and 2 button
are there any third party apps available on lineage that make an older pixel able to screen mirror to a tv without using a chromecast?
What is the phone that u r using I want to buy a phone with side camera instead of central camera
I do hope android evolves into a software like Linux where you can install it on any device and install drivers through detection after it connects to the Internet. Alot like pc os does it. Oems can still customize it but you can keep updating it to the newest version. Unless your hardware gets too old.
what file system does lineageos use, pixel experience uses f2fs and is it fast
Limited regular security updates with lineage OS some things can't be patched.
A lot is missed for security patches on outdated hardware lots of old blobs etc have to be used.
Im sry if that was mentioned in the video, but can you actually use standard google apps like youtube with this OS?
Im using LOS20 too but my recent apps wont show any apps that i opened is it a bug? should I reflash the LOS20?
Do banking apps work on this? I tried these a few years ago and if I remember correctly my bank apps wouldn't work for security reasons.
Suggestion: Please use dark mode for vids as it is quite difficult to read the display text
Can i still use the convenient password save or Samsung pass with this custom rom??
En mi caso tengo un dispositivo Samsung A22 5g, puedo instalar LineageOS 21 y si es así, que debería de hacer para poderlo instalar?
I currently run a pixel 7, by the time that's eol I'll be flashing a rom which is a first for me since I've never ran a device long enough to actually need it, I just did it because it was fun, pixel 7 though is easily the best phone I've used in ages and don't plan on getting rid of it
Agreed. I like my Pixel 7, and plan to use it as long as possible.

Also for pixel stuff, graphine OS is nice
Hello, I appreciate the information, however, if I made add some critique of your audio...Can you please do a soft hpf at about 100hz? Your audio comes out very boomy.

I use lineage os on my pixel 7 pro before anything else. With gapps. It just makes it better. And you don't have to install every Google app Google throws at you.
Custom ROMs are not for most people. The big thing is some banking apps don't work and Google pay will definitely not work due to SafetyNet attestation. It's a great way to rejuvinate an old phone to give to a kid, though.
I've had the note 10 plus since it came out and the security patches ended in August. Should I get a new rom like lineage?
may i ask if it is able to connect with wpa2 enterprise issue when running lineage os on pixel
I'm curious, I always see this in the context of "keeping old phones going" but I'm so unhappy with my Pixel 8, do people recommend this even for a new phone?
I just got like last year and its already not getting major Android updates anymore, i might do this cause i dont plan on getting rid if it untill it ceases to function
9:45 Does bootloader need to be relocked after completing install of the ROM and Gapps? What about Magisk and YASNAC? Would that help with stuff like Cash app and RCS chats?
11:30 How do you install Lineage on an 'unsupported' phone, as you just mentioned? Is there a way to install Lineage Unofficial on an unsupported phone??

One of the biggest problem with custom roms is bad auto brightness, camera and battery life as compared to stock roms. In my OnePlus 7T, there is no good custom rom now that is as good as even oxygen os 11. I wish atleast camera could have been comparable and usable to same extent as stock rom.
