Hamilton Khaki Field Watch Review (Day Date Automatic) - Straddling a Line Between Function & Style

- A review of the Hamilton Khaki Field Day Date Automatic Watch! The first time I saw a picture of this watch, it stopped me in my tracks. Between the dual-material dial and the patina coloring on the markers, it stood out to me even above Hamiltons, a brand whose style of watch I generally enjoy. Find out why I think the balance of function and style this watch strikes makes it a great value in my eyes!
I purchased this watch via Amazon.

I think you are the only channel who has a review of this version of the HKF day/date, which is the superior version because of the dial. I got this watch back in March and wear it all the time. Great looking, great running watch.
Great video! I have an interview for a promotion coming up. If I get the promotion, I've planned to reward myself with this Hamilton. I've been trying to decide on the right Khaki, and this one nails it. I LOVE the day/date function. It's perfectly balanced. I've subscribed!
Thank you Dave, and good luck! Hopefully I'll see a wrist shot very soon of you with that Desert Eagle!
Ever since I got a khaki king, with the split day and date, I can't even consider looking at watches that don't have it lol it's just so damn cool. And surprisingly useful. It's basically ruined my life! My options are so limited now
I like the patina, the day and date is an excellent compliment to this line of Hamilton watches.
Very good review trying to decide between this and the other 42mm khaki field with the 100m depth rating...
Nice design. The two texture dial with day date at 12/6 is very similar to a few Tissots. Thanks for your review.
Hope you go viral mate. Truly honest and particularly useful insight. Keep it up bud! Cheers from Bengaluru, India!
Thank you, Joseph!
I am seriously considering this model. I have two other Hamiltons with "H" movements, ETA based and power reserve 80 hours.
They are VERY accurate, similar to your results - one or two seconds off.
But...
The problem is that if they begin deviating in the future you can't simply remove the back and adjust the screw. There is no screw. In this modified version which allows 80 hours power reserve there is no regulation screw. I've read on watch forums that "normal" watchmakers can't help - a special sophisticated tools are needed, which means sending it back to Hamilton.
So, again, looks like (at least from your experience and mine) these are very accurate, but if things go wrong we are out of luck.
I am still going to buy it, though 🤗😋
You hit the nail on the head with the sizing comments. I would have bought this watch immediately if it was 40mm.
I just ordered my first Hamilton after watching this video. (Exact same model). I Have a seiko sto srpc91, orient bambino v4 and a garmin fenix 6x pro. Think my small collection is completed now.
Definitely plan on picking this up. Great review, keep at it!
Thank you!
Totally agree with you, if it is 40 mm, i would have go with it.
I already have the 42 mm khaki aviation...look big on my wrist even though lug to lug is fit my wrist, but I can get away with a reason "this is a pilot watch".
and you already make the right choice not to go with the black and white...this color scheme is very unique...very nice.
if you put black shiny crocodile strap, it can become a nice dress watch, but not a simple one because of the day complication.
Great review and discussion of the highs and lows of the watch, keep it up
Honolulu Watch i like how you put the likes and dislikes of the watch
Outstanding review, 42 mm is not bad, 40mm would it been better, but the vintage look is amazing. Definitely is going to be on my must buy list. You gained a subscriber out of me. Best regards from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Thank you for your review; yours is the most thorough I have seen on this watch. This is a beautiful watch. I like the utilitarian look of a field watch but this line has a lot of little details that make it so much more appealing than Hamilton's other field watches. I'm surprised these aren't more popular.
I have been eyeing the khaki day/date for at least 6 months now. I definitely want to make it my next watch purchase, but it's more expensive than any watch I have bought so far and I feel like I need a special occasion, like a personal milestone, before I pull the trigger.
Initially, I was drawn to the version you have, then I started to really liked the version with the black dial and white numerals. Now I feel I finally settled on the silver dial version because I already own several watches with black dials. I was bothered that the silver version doesn't come with lume, but after watching your review I see that the lume wouldn't have been very spectacular anyway.
I'm also surprised this version isn't more popular, but I know a lot of folks like the regular Khaki Field as a better quality beater. A shame, because I feel like mine can stand up to a fair amount of punishment!
Excellent review! Finally found a Hamilton (I've wanted one for a long time) that is perfect for me.
Thank you, Jon!
This is great, the all-black is a scorcher
You have a great and soothing voice. Excellent review!
Great review. Very detailed.
I also bought this bad boy. Threw it on a colareb leather strap. Beautiful. I wear it casually but it can definitely dress up.
Hey, may i have glass diameter? I wanna change with ar coated double dome..
Well I have an 8 and 1/8 wrist and I bought the Khaki Field Day date but the 40 millimeter and I couldn't disagree any more vehemently it is way too small on my wrist the 42 is absolutely where it's at I think the Hamilton's where tend to wear smaller and I'd love to get your opinion on that watch the one where they're both up at the top I don't think you'd like it very much I was drawn to it but in retrospect definitely is going to end up out of my collection soon but I do love Hamilton and I really like this iteration great video man
Great review, glad I found your channel. :) I had a Khaki King previously and the lume was really weak, was wondering if higher end Khakis would be better... sadly it doesn't seems so!
Thanks for watching! Yeah, lume is the one thing Hamilton doesn't pay much mind to, it seems. Fortunately they are awesome at pretty much every other aspect though :)
great watch I don't think that 42mm is terrible for me. the movement here is superb for the price range
i agree, especially being that you see similar ETA movements in watches that cost double and triple the price
Enjoy your reviews. It would appear our tastes are similar. Would it be possible to include a mention within the review where you found this?
I may not mention it in the video every time, but I will likely put it in the description in future videos. I did add it in the description above for this video.
Sorry, I was too lazy to read the notes below. It was not meant as a criticism. I'm a beginner in this whole watch collecting thing and not very attune to all the facets. I do enjoy your reviews. The only problem is when I watch, I want.
no offense taken! I also have the same problem when watching other watch channels as far as wanting. I've learned quickly to sit and let it marinate for a bit before pulling the trigger.
Looks pretty nice. Very tempting. I find the 80 hour power reserve fairly pointless.....wish they’d spent the extra money giving the watch better, more functional lume.
80 hour power reserve is pointless???????? 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄.
You can use ur mobile to check your time.... Watch will be pointless for you
I used to think 80 hour reserve was useless too until i got this watch, it's pretty handy feature
Boy I wish I could get one of these for $500 to $600 now. I want the black with white, and they do not offer the one with the black leather strap anymore. I would have to buy the bracelet version for $950 and then spend $100 on the Hamilton black leather strap.
I’m considering purchasing the black and white version. Have you had any problems with condensation? I’ve read a couple of reviews saying it was an issue.
Not a one. Nearly three years in and it's been perfect for me.
it is a field watch, a tool watch.
you are supposed to see the time at a glance so bigger is better.
you shouldn't worry how good you look while climbing a mountain or being on a battlefield.
Beautiful dial and style overall. Just a shame regarding the 50m WR.
Hi, great review, liked the 6 months later review as well. I just bought the exact watch and love the aesthetics. I'm very new to automatic watches, occasionally I hear a light click from the watch. This happens every few times I move the watch. So it's not constant, rather when my arm moves and thus the watch moves. It's not a big deal, but I don't know if that is expected functionality or not. Does your watch make a clicking sound?
From the bracelet or movement?
@@TheBuddingWatchEnthusiast Seems to be coming from the movement
Good info & review.
Personally I would have gone with the white numbers. As they would be a bit more easy to read and suit nicely with the white hands and the day-date. The size is a bit too large for my taste.
I bought this watch and like it very much. My only reservation is it is a bit small. I would have preferred a 43 - 44mm. I also have a Marathon and a Glycine. I am on active duty in the Marine Corps. Most of my brothers in Force Recon all have wrists around 7.5 and prefer bigger watches. Anyway, good review keep it up.
@Lee Thanks, I will check it out.
This watch is on my radar. Looking for an AD who will sell at a discount.
Question on your video. What setup are you using to get your overhead (or over the shoulder) shots: on what are you mounting your camera?
I do a few podcasts as well, so I have a spare scissor arm mount that I bought a 1/4" adapter for so it would fit my camera. Works excellently.
I love Hamilton, however, I do not own one. Until they can improve the water resistance with screw down crowns, I won't buy one. A field watch should be tough and have a minimum of 100m. As you say, improve the lume, in 40mm, 100m water resistance and I'll take it!
The 46mm Pilot Day Date has a screw down crown:). I almost went for it, but decided on the 42mm.
I totally agree with the size 38-40 would have been better and offer a sunburst blue dial.
EyeOnTime 40 is the ideal size, smaller than 40 looks awful
Nice watch. It looks like copy of a Tissot T1, but still very nice :)
Mine averages about only +3 seconds a day. Outstanding for a basic ETA movement imo
Read review thanks subscribe I do have a question though I’m finding conflicting pictures on the black White version online does that one have a similar “vinyl record” dial or is it plain your feedback would be appreciated
The white numerals version also has the snail tracks around the outer half of the dial as this one does.
Great watch!
Trying to decide between this, the khaki king field, or pilot day date. Tough choice, do you think the increase in price of this is worth it over the khaki king?
I think that boils down to personal taste. I hate the dual cut out window for the day and date that the King has, so it was never a consideration for me. That said, the Khaki King is fantastic value for money if you like the asthetics. I think the H30 movement is a slight upgrade over the movement in the King as well, but it's mostly to do with the power reserve.
I can’t believe you said “toolish” is everything a tool then? What’s a violin?
So, tell us the size of your wrist so we can better understand the size issues you mentioned
At the time of this video, 8"
I can't seem to find a reason why this watch is $200 more than the Khaki King Auto ref H64455523. Can it really just be the 2mm increase and slightly different design? Any thoughts?
Hmmm...honestly not sure. I thought it may have been the movement, but it seems the King has the same extended power reserve. Maybe the spilt window movement is more expensive on the Day/Date?
Never liked the font of Hamilton’s numbers and I think the larger 3,6,9 and 12 are a mistake here too. Nice looking watch overall though
A dull finish is best; too much if a shine becomes scratched easily.
It's a shame they didn't make this in a smaller case size.
Quality is it the hamilton or the squale?
Between those two? The Hamilton, bar none. So far, it's been phenomenal.
It's a nice watch but Hamilton don't do anything with the movement, Hamilton is part of the Swatch group and that powermatic 80 movement is used in many different watches in the group from Tissot, Certina, Hamilton etc.
Does Hamilton have any quartz models 42 - 44 mm?
They do have a lot of their Khaki line available in quartz around this size.
@@TheBuddingWatchEnthusiast Thank you)))
If you have seven and a quarter inch wrist or larger check out the Sea-gull Chinese Military reissue watch. All in house.
I love mine and only £180.
I like Hamilton watches but they are always too big. And their smaller ones have super long lugs.
I have this item . And im sell
Only negative feedback from me is the non existant WR. A proper "military" watch should have 10ATM WR like Bremont. Otherwise, great style and mechanism.
