It’s fun to experiment and a great thing sometimes too. I was sorry to see Tad wipe off almost all of his painting-it wasn’t that bad - I like his foreground. Sometimes if you hold your fire and take a plein air home you find it’s better than you think.
Yes, I’ve found that to be true. Often the struggle of the process will affect my opinion of the product. He could have lived with it but since we were out there experimenting he chose to wipe it down and simplify. I think it would have been interesting to watch Tad build up the painting after the wipe out but we ran out of time.
@@chamberlainpaintings Yes, I’d have liked to see him do that too, be interesting to see what he was visualizing. It’s great that you can experiment so freely . Using Vertical strokes was interesting!
Been watching your channel this past year and definitely appreciate how you attempt to push yourself and your art while still staying true and being a tremendous inspiration. Happiest of Years to and everyone that watches you!
Fun to watch you and Tad out painting together! Love the idea to use a single large brush and do just big shapes…that practice would help me immensely. Beautiful result with simple but interesting shapes and subtle transitions of color. Happy New Year!
I discovered your channel during the holiday break. Love your colors, the simplicity of your art and can understand how hard it is to simplify sometimes. Lots of thinking involved and you make good decisions. I'm just beginning watercolor and learning so much from your approach to color and composition. Thank you for sharing your art.
New Year, New Technique. A fun experiment to paint in such a minimal way and yet have it read as a meadow leading to a seascape. Nice to hear that your watercolor sketching reveals new methods with oils. Happy 2023 Michael. Thanks for the session

First time I'm commenting though I have been following you for quite some time now. To me you are a true honest artist who does not mind sharing experiences. Starting the new year watching your art video and hoping to get myself out to do more plein air painting this year. Thank you for your channel, it’s awesome!
It’s so fun to see you try different styles. I love that about painting with others as we can learn from one another. You mentioned Monet and how he shows parts of the canvas and that is so true. It made me think of Sargent and how he did that, too, especially with his watercolors. Also, if you are interested - The Legion of Honor will be having a Sargent exhibit I believe this month! I can’t wait to see it!
Good experiment, Even better conversation. Just like being there. Now maybe go over the vertical brushstrokes with some horizontal ones. It's the mix of the two that creates the movement and interest, plus heaps of broken colour. Great start to 2023, more of the same please. Keep pushing those boundaries and see where it goes. 👍
Happy New Year to you and Tad! Interesting approach on this one. Love that you try new things and share your process and experience. Looking forward to a new year of your videos....they are definitely my favorite here on RUclips!

Great video, I love that you’re trying new techniques, exploring new ways of painting, taking chances, it inspires me to get out of my confort zone, looking to have a good time during the process, no matter the result…Happy new year Michael and Tad!!
Happy New Year Michael ! This is so different from when I first started watching you . 4 years ?Vertical strokes and they work !! You are ever challenging yourself . I like the Alizarin in there. Happy New Year, sir!!!!! Cool paintings, guys! ... Well, that's definitely a different technique, it reminds me in some way abstract paintings of the first half of 20th century, I don't know, I might be wrong. lol ... in modern words, it's a little bit "Minecraft" style! lol ... Happy New Year and have a good one! Greetings from the EU!
Happy new year Michael! Loved this new technique, really liked how the composition turned out as well and you definitely hit the mark on using simpler shapes
Happy new year Michael! Great video! Again so much to learn from your experimentation. Makes me excited to try something different as well. No disrespect to Tad, but when he scrubbed things out to simplify the shapes, the painting really did improve! Glad he enjoyed making the changes. I think you should totally have traced your shadow. I was thinking the same thing 😂 Thanks for the vid 😊
Thanks Miriam! Yes, I highly recommend experimenting with something new. It's an enjoyable challenge and a great way to grow as an artist. I love how Tad is open to making drastic changes and letting me share it here on my channel. Usually when we get into trouble with our paintings it's because we've broken up the big shapes with detail. Wiping down or going back to a big brush can usually get things back on track!
Happy New Year Michael! For a different approach, you could do a painting from start to finish using only palette knives and silicone paint applicators!😃
Fun creating! Nice to have openness to react to each other's work in progress and know the sharing is intended for good. Although I tell my husband that if I follow all his suggestions I will have to put his name as the signature : / Well, "Let me know what you think in the comments" : Finished painting gives me a Walmart-home-decor-artwork vibe somewhat but seeing it hang on the wall as an original oil painting would bump it back out of that class. Good to explore though because it will lead to fresh work. Love to be inspired here!
As i mentioned my goal was to get out of my comfort zone and try something new. Limiting the strokes to vertical forced me to focus on shapes. It also presented new problems to be solved. And more importantly it was fun! I agree it will lead to fresh work 😊
I think it will be really interesting to see your progression and thoughts, experimenting with your new approach, and would love to see how it evolves. Happy New Year

enjoyed the video. Thought that using vertical strokes was interesting and using that technique to produce texture into the painting. Useful stuff as always. Have a great New Year and look forward to the next videos.
Happy new year! ... This was an interesting process and experiment with a different approach but to me the painting just doesn't look finished ... Colors and values are there ... Maybe I didn't expect the outcome to be so different than your usual ... Just my opinion ... your willingness to try something new takes alot and shows that if you can leave the comfort zone then im inspired to also ... Thanks for the ongoing encouragement!
Thanks Nancy! I wanted this painting to look different from my usual work. I wanted to get away from my usual habits. It's going to take me a while to sort out what of this approach I'd like to add to my process. I think I just need to live with this painting for a while. I plan to experiment with other limitations as well. Limitations often force us to find new ways to solve problems. Happy New Year!
I tried using an umbrella when I first started plein air painting but it didn't work for me. It's an extra bit of gear to carry/set up and it toppled my easel several times. I tend to paint in breezy locations. I turn my canvas/panel so that it's not in direct light so I can judge colors and values. Happy New Year!
