  • Ian Watson is the original author for the 40K universe. Hired by Bryan Ansell to write science-fiction stories for his beloved settings, Watson was responsible for creating the Inquisitor trilogy featuring Draco, Meh'Lindi the assassin, and Grimm the Squat, as well as for writing the long verboten novel Space Marine.
Watson also worked with legendary film maker Stanley Kubrick to create the screenplay for the movie that would later be made by Steven Spielberg - A.I. Artificial Intelligence - and we talked about the process and outcomes of that unique experience.
Many thanks to my Patreon supporters and Lewis of the Oldhammer Fiction Podcast for help in prepping for this interview.

As a diehard Ian Watson apologist, it makes me very happy to see this interview. I was starting to fear nobody was ever going to interview him!

I think we worked out why he got on with 40k. :3

Love his speech pattern and some of the antiquated words he uses. Like an old Victorian gentleman reliving his past life.

Priceless moments there with presumably Ian’s wife poking in to stop him going "too far" with certain things. "Watsooon!", "Ian Watsoooon!" - hilarious! Such a womanly thing to do and likely the outcome of many many years spent together.

"Space Marine" is still the template I prefer in my version of WH40K. Halcyon times where we felt it was collectively ours and our own as we had creative inspirations.

My FAVORITE 40K author... suitably wild and weird take on the setting.
I'm pleased to hear him mention Flaubert... whose Salammbo has a very exotic/alien feel to it, and echoes in Watson's 40K writing.

Very happy to see this interview! Imo Ian Watson is the only author who really does justice to the type of world that John Blanche illustrated and is hinted at by the earlier lore. Of course Space Marines should be psychotic and have sublimated sadistic and sexual urges!

Just as idiosyncratic and interesting as one would expect from his writing. The accent surprised me, then I read he lives in Gijon. A proper English eccentric and a very imaginative man. Nice to seem him still enthusiastic in his 80s.

I read Ian's books in german in the 90s, the translation was very odd back then. For example Space Marines where called "Kaisergrenadiere" ("Emperors Grenadiers") and the Golden Throne was "Der Goldene Rollstuhl" (literally "The Golden Wheelchair").

I loved his 40K books. I can't stand how people go on and on about 40K fiction these days, it's such bulshit. It was so much better back then: just massively over the top with its own embedded humour. It never really took itself perfectly seriously. But now it's sooooo serious. I read some of Ian's other stuff too, I still remember Deathhunter.

Why does he have a tiny baby hat perched on the tippy top of his head?
Someone get that man a scally cap that fits. They go _on_ your head, like a baseball hat or any other normal hat (tho they look best with a jaunty slant)
Sources: I’m from Boston so I have to wear them by law. 😅
