- Ian Watson is the original author for the 40K universe. Hired by Bryan Ansell to write science-fiction stories for his beloved settings, Watson was responsible for creating the Inquisitor trilogy featuring Draco, Meh'Lindi the assassin, and Grimm the Squat, as well as for writing the long verboten novel Space Marine.
Watson also worked with legendary film maker Stanley Kubrick to create the screenplay for the movie that would later be made by Steven Spielberg - A.I. Artificial Intelligence - and we talked about the process and outcomes of that unique experience.
Many thanks to my Patreon supporters and Lewis of the Oldhammer Fiction Podcast for help in prepping for this interview.

As a diehard Ian Watson apologist, it makes me very happy to see this interview. I was starting to fear nobody was ever going to interview him!
As far as I'm concerned, his books are still canon 😀
"The government apologised in parliament, but fuck that. And, uh, fuck the government for that matter".
I think we worked out why he got on with 40k. :3
Ian is the British Grandpa we all need to adopt into our lives.
I listened to this with my screen off and it was like some sort of lucid dream featuring Sir Anthony Hopkins. I thought I'd fallen asleep 😂😂. Fantastic stuff
Haha yes I thought so too. Hopkins doing Churchill at times
I still have my original copy of Inquisitor. Good to know that Ian is still getting cheques.
Bloody hell! I lent mine to a nephew, along with Space Marine. Keen to regain them now.
Love his speech pattern and some of the antiquated words he uses. Like an old Victorian gentleman reliving his past life.
Priceless moments there with presumably Ian’s wife poking in to stop him going "too far" with certain things. "Watsooon!", "Ian Watsoooon!" - hilarious! Such a womanly thing to do and likely the outcome of many many years spent together.
"Space Marine" is still the template I prefer in my version of WH40K. Halcyon times where we felt it was collectively ours and our own as we had creative inspirations.
Kubrick, Rimbaud, Baudelaire, 40K… these are a few of my favourite things!
That was a wild ride!
Great work Jordan, Watson's 40K universe is still the one I game in! 👏👍👌
My FAVORITE 40K author... suitably wild and weird take on the setting.
I'm pleased to hear him mention Flaubert... whose Salammbo has a very exotic/alien feel to it, and echoes in Watson's 40K writing.
I love how Ian makes out GW senior management to be a lot like the bickering High Lords of Terra. Fantastic interview.
What a complete mad lad old gent!
What a great interview and what a character! I read Space Marine when I was about 12 or 13 and it blew my tiny adolescent mind 😂. Still one of the best books about space marines.
Mad as a cut snake, and wonderful! Great interview with an absolute legend!!
Very happy to see this interview! Imo Ian Watson is the only author who really does justice to the type of world that John Blanche illustrated and is hinted at by the earlier lore. Of course Space Marines should be psychotic and have sublimated sadistic and sexual urges!
Jordan your videos are so fantastic. You have a great voice, great quality camer and sound, amazing hair. It's only a matter of time before you are getting 100k+ views per videos!!
Thanks for brining him to the screen. You can feel the true British absurdist and dark influences that 40k was based on oozing out of his charming recollections.
What a legend. Voids apart from the Steve Jackson interview. 🤣🤣
What an amazing conversation
Thanks Stu, it was a real pleasure chatting to Ian!
This was an AMAZING interview Jordan, I think I could listen to Ian and you talk all day. I'll absolutely have to check out his works now.
Loved this! What a personality, I'll have to go find that book
That was so much fun to listen to, he certainly plays into the eccentric English gentleman role very well. 😂 Definitely going back to revisit Inquisitor with more mature eyes. 🧐
Fantastic interview! What an incredible guest. Does anyone know where someone who didn’t keep their original copies of Ian’s books could read them again?
Thanks for another great interview. So much covered of the ongoing wonderful career of Ian Watson. Squeak-squeak! 🤩🐀🌠
Read Space Marine a few years ago and I loved it even for all the weird and strange events. Love hearing Ian Watson’s recollections!
Thank you for this. Watson's article 'Plumbing Kubrick' is fascinating and hilarious.
Thank you for this interview, thoroughly enjoyed listening to Ian and his anecdotes 😊
Space Marine is the only GW novel I’ve ever read, and it feels like it’s the only one I would ever need to read- sublime ❤
So you missed out on the Inquisitor trilogy? There's still time to rectify that mistake.
Great work Jordan, cheers!
That was a superb interview. I knew nothing of his career, and I'll definitely be checking out his books. Thanks Jordan.
Just as idiosyncratic and interesting as one would expect from his writing. The accent surprised me, then I read he lives in Gijon. A proper English eccentric and a very imaginative man. Nice to seem him still enthusiastic in his 80s.
“Who knows Ian? Maybe this will be my next movie” -Steven Spielberg
Delightful interview!
Oh, wow!
What a glorious man.
Great!
The Granddaddy of Evil himself!
I read Ian's books in german in the 90s, the translation was very odd back then. For example Space Marines where called "Kaisergrenadiere" ("Emperors Grenadiers") and the Golden Throne was "Der Goldene Rollstuhl" (literally "The Golden Wheelchair").
Find David Ferring next... please!!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I loved his 40K books. I can't stand how people go on and on about 40K fiction these days, it's such bulshit. It was so much better back then: just massively over the top with its own embedded humour. It never really took itself perfectly seriously. But now it's sooooo serious. I read some of Ian's other stuff too, I still remember Deathhunter.
The only really good author BL ever had
The only really good boy love author
Why does he have a tiny baby hat perched on the tippy top of his head?
Someone get that man a scally cap that fits. They go _on_ your head, like a baseball hat or any other normal hat (tho they look best with a jaunty slant)
Sources: I’m from Boston so I have to wear them by law. 😅
The way you awkwardly laughed at some of his cringy comments. Good for you for humoring him
What cringy comments, and why "humoring" him?
Hi love your videos ❤
KitbashCarnage hear at the age of 31 iv recently got back into the warhammer/kitbashing community agen after taking 15year brake to pay bills and so on .
