  • New year new language! There's a lot of great reasons to learn a new language this year, so why not? I am absolutely loving my RUclips channel atm by the way. Even this video which is just on a topic I enjoy (learning languages) was such a joy to edit. Adding extra text flairs and things is just so fun and I'm enjoying what I make so much more than ever before. I hope you'll take up my challenge and learn a new language with me this year! It's free, and there's literally no downside. Let's learn! :D

As an American living in London I love noticing the funny differences between the cultures and one of my most popular video series is my British VS American one. Honestly once you start learning and you have good methods, you quickly realize it's not a con at all. Learning process can be extremely fun, you can meet many interesting people who want to learn the language too, and it really doesn't look like a ton of homework and few hours of memorizing words everyday.

It really is so hard to pick!! For Spanish I’ve started using Drops as well, you get five minutes twice a day or so and if you have a steak you get up to five extra minutes a day! I’ve got a 455 day streak on Duolingo but there are so many nouns I don’t know, and Drops is good for that. It doesn’t do structure or grammar so not a lot of verbs. I’d love a sister app called Splatters for verbs, because of the conjugation, lols. But the look of it is nice and it’s just enough gamification to be great motivation. I want those extra minutes for free, dang it!
Good luck on getting back into the swing of it!

Hello. New subscriber here. I am enjoying your videos.
I am on day 298 of my DL Spanish course and doing very well.
I worked as an Immigration Inspector in Laredo from 1997 -2004. The Spanish I learned was good for basic interviews and issuing visitor permits.
I regretted not improving my ability to speak and comprehend Spanish for many years. So last year I began with reviewing my text books and watching basic and intermediate RUclips videos.
Just prior to the new year (2019) I started with Duolingo. I decided to not test out at all. I did not want to skip any lessons and figured the repetition was what I truly needed to absorb and retain the information.
I studied French for a year and a half in high school. It has helped some during my eight years overseas.
However, seven of those years were in Germany where I received a Certificate of German Studies from the University of Maryland, European Division.
I was able to become highly conversational in German prior to returning to the US in 1988. Unfortunately, I have not retained much of that ability.
I plan to start using Duolingo German soon. I will probably do French first though.
There are many Haitians here in South Florida and many speak regular French also.
I am retired and may travel overseas again to improve my language abilities as you have.
I just wanted to introduce myself to a fellow lover of languages.
    Best wishes. Jim Regan.

Learning a new language is so much fun! I'm currently in my fourth year of French at my high school and I love it. I got the opportunity to go to France with my French teacher last year, where I learned so much about the culture and got to put my language skills out there. Now I also get to to to Quebec this summer and practice even more. Learning another language makes going to places that speak it so so much fun. It also makes it so interesting to learn the culture. When I go to college next year I'll be taking Latin and ancient Greek as well so I can read ancient texts in their original languages (I'm majoring in Classics).
For anyone looking to learn a new language, I recommend watching movies or listening to music in it. Watch a movie you know well and turn on French subtitles or audio. Read a book you know well in the new language. It's so much fun!

I feel like you Native English speakers have such an advantage - because for the rest of us, English is our second language, but since everyone speaks English, it's almost like it doesn't count, and learning a third language is much harder than learning the second, purely because the first one already takes up so much space in my brain, at least for me....and nobody will ever care that I speak Czech - because that's the thing about 'one country languages' - they're just not that practical outside of that country :/

I disagree. It is to our advantage needing to learn a new language, as it prompts us to train our brain. That in itself should create a superiority in intelligence. Besides, have you read this report:
      www.bbc.com/capital/story/20161028-native-english-speakers-are-the-worlds-worst-communicators
The process of learning a language would prompt us to think differently, train logic and therefore use language (even our native) more effectively. I think it is also a good way to train one to be able to see in other people's shoe, and therefore become more open-minded

Yeah, but on the bright side, you and your fellow natives have a brilliant code for when you’re stuck among idiots that don’t have Czech. I’ve never used more Irish than in England.

    • @landerlaurits
      @landerlaurits 5 лет назад +13

as a language student i totally disagree!! so many teenagers in the western world who don’t have English as their first language are billingual, they can fluently communicate in two languages at a young age
this makes them smarter and they form connections between words and think about language aspects without even being aware of it
it will actually make learning a third language easier because you’ve got an extra language to compare the new language with, and for that reason it is even more useful if your native language, as in your case, isn’t a Germanic language like English
without being aware of it you know a whole lot about languages than someone who only speaks English
you learned English easily because it’s everywhere around you, mainly on the internet, and that might motivate you to learn languages, at least that’s what it did for me
you might think that these two languages are taking up precious brain capacity but really you got plenty of brain capacity, like i said knowing English would only help you with learning new languages
to close this off i want to say that Czech is not a useless language, every language is special and interesting in it’s own way, there are still millions of people speaking it and knowing this language can be vert beneficial just because of the fact that there aren’t that many speakers of it compared to way bigger languages
my native language is Dutch, i can also have basic convos in French and i speak English fluently, i study German and Polish at university, i’m fluent in German but barely at an intermediate level for Polish
but once i know Polish i want to continue on learning Czech
because the language sounds beautiful to me, because it’s similar to Polish, because i like the Czech culture better than the Polish one and because i absolutely love Prague
so there you have it, why i disagree

Yes, yes and yes! What you said about learning languages improves your English is 100% true, studying languages has taught me so much about grammar that I was never taught in school. Plus, once you learn one new language, it can make it a lot easier to learn other similar languages as you have that base knowledge! I’m also learning Spanish (I’m doing a masters in translation with French and German and I love the fact I get to learn a third language at uni for) love these language-themed videos! 🇪🇸

I have slight learning disabilities so that also plays into my motivation to study. it's really cool to know spanish on a base level though because i can recognise spanish words in songs and have that 'ooh i know what that means', it's a very rewarding feeling.

For anyone who is currently in school and reading this: if you are going to take a Spanish course, be careful of who your teacher is. My first Spanish teacher was absolutely amazing, she cared about the subject, and she cared about us. My current Spanish 2 teacher is the exact opposite. She is ruining the language for me which sucks because its a useful thing to know. Not quite sure what the point of this comment is but I thought I should put my 2 cents in.

You have to make a decition and try to learn the lenguage by your own way like watching videos or films or maybe learning about all the countrys that speak the lenguage you can start with peru or colombia or uruguay or my homeland Argentina you could watch dustinluke he is an american that loves argentinian culture or you could watch Zach morris he is an american that loves colombian culture. And if you want to improve your spanish yo must talk to a native speaker and that you could achive by traveling or like i am doing naw ...watching english speaker youtubers.

I am an American learning German as well and it's very fun for me to see your journey because it is mirroring my experience in many ways. I'm not nearly as far along as you and I've never been to Germany (Oktoberfest is definitely a bucket list experience of mine), but I'm ancestrally German and it's interesting and it just sounds cool and like "my" language. The last native speaker in my family was my grandfather and he's no longer with us, so it helps me feel close to him too. It's like a puzzle to me that I enjoy figuring out and then I practice talking to myself all day in German like a foreign lunatic. I don't know any speakers, but it's only been a couple months and I live near two German towns that I have yet to visit with my new skills. Your videos have been giving me a lot to look forward to!! 2019 is already exciting! Veilen dank!

"Over 75% of Americans don't speak any other language" and here I am, a mere EU citizen, having learned at least 2 (aka 4 in my case) foreign languages in school because that's what the EU requires. I learned English, Latin, French and Spanish in school (and I am German, so I speak that as well). My English is great, my Spanish is okay (need to practice it more) but I lost pretty much all of my French, I have also learned some German Sign Language in a course I took and am now doing Korean on Duolingo, so we'll see how that goes. I just think it's a very privileged way of thinking to think you don't need to learn anything else because you already speak English.

Over the years in school I’ve learnt french, Spanish, German, Latin, Russian and British sign language (not many to fluency though). The other thing that annoys me is when Americans think everyone should speak their language but don’t try learning one themselves.

Laurel K Yeah, I was in a tiny town in the southern US, and we only had Spanish and French as options. People took the bare minimum to meet the standards to pass, two semesters for us, and then promptly forgot it. Most citizens in the US don’t ever leave the US so they don’t think it’s needed. I’m a writer and like the idea of being able to understand and exchange ideas with people I’d not be able to otherwise. I’m working on Spanish and have been for two years. I may add Italian or French next. I’d like to add German and Russian (I took Russian intensively as a little tiny girl, lol, so maybe I hope it’ll help me some) and Arabic. I’d love to learn Mandarin, but I’m really intimidated. So I think I’ll be leveling up, lol. Level II languages first before the harder stuff!
I do wish schools focused more on this, because it helps develop the brain in a way it isn’t otherwise, but a lot of stuff is being dropped from schools, any kind of art and music is gone in many areas, even sports are disappearing in some places. I guess they think since most of the kids will probably never leave the US anyway and grades are dropping, let’s just plug away at that math more. It’s a shame, but a testament to how our schools are fairing overall I think.

I am fluent in English but i have been taking Spanish since i was in 2nd grade (I am a freshman in high school) and I took Latin all three years in middle school an i would say if you are looking for and easier language take Latin it has so many roots in not only just english but in spansh and in many other laugages now i am sure everyone reading this comment is saying that latin is a dead lauange and you are right but by learing latin it will help you understand english so much more. For example the english word verbatim means word for word but the latin root word is verbum which means "to talk" and it is not just fancy words that no one ever uses but normal words like terrarium has the latin root terra which means earth. So it can be useful in your everyday life.

I love that you’re so passionate about getting people to learn languages. I’d recommend learning Latin: there’s even more declensions than German, and the grammar is reasonably challenging, but I’ve found that I engage with European languages so much more because of their root in Latin and vice versa - I so often find myself using my comprehension of Spanish, French and English to understand it) (Also rewatching/rereading Harry Potter is just hilarious as Rowling has created a very unique version of Latin mixed in with a little French). Also side note: you’ll use Zauberstab if you ever have kids and read them fairytales (my favourite book growing up was Dornröschen and it’s one of the few German words I know (surprisingly))

If you want a fairly easy one, try Swahili, Dutch, Indonesian or Esperanto. If you want one that’s more challenging I’ve heard that German is easier for welsh speakers. However it takes a long time to learn. If you want to try something with a different alphabet you could try Japanese or Russian, however with Japanese there are lots of characters to learn and Russian grammar is HARD. Have a look through duolingo and see what interests you. Also if there’s something that’s connected to a language that you’re interested in (like a book or type of music) then try learning that language. About 8 years ago I started learning German to read les miserables in its original language (I’m about halfway through now) and now I speak fluent French. One day I might learn Korean to understand k pop lyrics. Languages can be a personal choice, and it often helps to find the language that’s spoken somewhere you want to go. Keep me updated if you choose one, and viel Glück (good luck in German)

I've been having English classes or classes in English since I was 2 so I can say I understand it and use it.
It sounds perfect because since you're that young it is way easier to learn the language because you're also learning a lot of your native language and you can connect them easily. The only problem I had was that my english was way too basic, I understood a lot of things if I read them but my vocabulary was a shame and I couldn't understand anything listening to it. Since then I've been working on that and I feel like I'm way more comfortable with it. From not understanding anything I'm understanding everything you're saying in your videos without subtitles and I'm also writing this. My vocabulary is way better because I read a lot, I probably read more in English than in Spanish, and my classmates always ask me if they don't know what a word means or if they need a translation.
I do think I need to learn a new language seriously and I will start. At school I'm learning french but in three years I've learned not so much and I wish it was easier. I plan to continue learning french by my side but at school I'll be learning German wich I will take seriously.
Thank you because we all need to get motivated to continue learning.

First of all, I'm always really happy when someone is learning german as it isn't the most popular language and the grammar can be really annoying😅. I have been learning english for seven years now and it improved both my understanding in the internet and my grammatical skills in german and made it more diverse. I'm also learning latin for four years and italian for almost two years and since that's still not enough for me, I started learning ancient greek in school and middle egyptian at home at an 🇺🇸-website, which improves my language skills as well. You really encourage me to go on and do my best, even if it could get annoying (like ancient greek sometimes is).
    Thank you very much!
(It was a pain writing this as my german auto-correction keeps changing the words😂.)

You can also say "Zweitausendneunzehn (2019)".
    I think there aren't many germans saying "Zwanzig neunzehn (20 - 19)"

I was using Duolingo to learn French last year but quit doing it for some reason... You've encouraged me to start it back up again. I'd made good (before I'd quit) progress so I'm looking forward to starting it up again and refreshing myself. I work nights and have a lot of downtime, so I just need to stay motivated to using that downtime for learning instead of sitting on my phone browsing social media. Wish me luck!

I have been using Duolingo for a few months now, in part because of your videos. I am also learning Spanish and German. I think it is a great idea that you are learning Spanish from German. I am going to try to learn German from Spanish when I decide to start a new tree (I think).

I can't imagine learning spanish throug german because of the gender, that's gonna be a hard one, specially for an english native speaker. I wish you the best of lucks

    • @evan

Yeah gender is different often ugh

    • @Jannyl13
      @Jannyl13 5 лет назад +1

But the gender is much easier in Spanish. As a German native speaker who learned Spanish in school, I can tell you that gender wasn't really difficult. You just completely ignore the German gender and use the rules to determine whether its el or la because at least in Spanish it often coincides with the word endings.
What I wanted to say with that: if you've struggled through German gender (props to you, Evan!), Spanish will be a walk in the park! 😊

I love how passionate you are about learning new languages! In 2018 I picked up my learning of Italian and I'm continuing that this year, but I would love to learn another language. I'm already studying a (foreign) language at uni right now though, so it might be a bit much 😂
