So, thanks for reminding me how fun language learning is with this program. Truly, if it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be learning a new language.
This update was kinda annoying to me, but that's more my fault than Duo's. Writing the same sentences over and again bores me to death... even though I know you're not supposed to finish all 5 levels at once, the perfectionist in me wins every time. Also, you sharing your streak makes me want to beat you. With my 1 day streak. Dammit.
Fuckin rip. I do every single one to 5 and then just go back and do the "practice" to brush up. But I agree, there's only so many times I can write "er rennt sobald er dich sieht" without it crushing my soul (he runs as soon as he sees you)
With the new crown system I really wouldn’t recommend doing it that way. Get 5 or 6 lessons to level 1 then slowly get them all to 2 (alternating between lessons). This allows your brain to focus on different things and recall the right vocal from long-term rather than short-term memory

Thank you so much for this video! I love watching your videos on language learning and so glad that you have a positive experience with Duolingo. Your videos actually inspired me to try the desktop version and now I use it more than ever and have more goals in mind to keep using Duolingo everyday. Your videos make me smile and though I am taking Duolingo for spanish, it's great that you incorporate your language in your videos and help yourself and others practice!
I do think that one of your first DuoLingo videos definitely had a big impact on the amount of German I studied per day - before I would use DuoLingo every now and then but these days I'm trying much harder.... videos, Tinycards, TV series, etc. So thank you for the inspiration! I love all of your language learning oriented videos.
So I originally downloaded the Duolingo app to relearn French in college before I had to take a French class for my degree. But I didn't keep up with it because college was so busy and stressful for me. But now that I'm an adult with a more regular schedule, I've gotten back into it thanks to your videos. So thanks for motivating me to pick up French again Evan!
Thank you, Evan! I haven't used Duolingo for at least a year and you just inspired me to continue learning now. Especially since you mentioned that they finally improved the mobile version (I also love the tips and grammar rules that the desktop version has but the app version didn't have before - it's probably because I'm an analyst :) )
You've shown me how beneficial a little every day can be; you've inspired me to keep hacking away at certain hobbies everyday (even if that's not a new language this year) 👊 👌❤
Hey! I love your videos I've been kinda watching them for almost two years! Thank you for all of your positivity and inspiration and for showing us different ways to get involved in different cultures. Because of your videos, I was inspired to join a club called "United Cultures" at my school and it has been going very well. Thank you for your videos on Duolingo it has motivated me to go back and try again on the app.
I started using duo after not using it fir a while because of your videos. That said, I LOVE the update. Because I had learned a few words the first time I used duo, the previous update opened every lesson for me. I couldn’t test out if the first level. This closed everything back up, meaning I need to complete the lessons and giving me a huge sense of accomplishment
I’m moving to Germany and your advice on duo lingo desktop and your humour bravery approach in learning the language encouraged me to pick it back up und ist sehr gut! Danke 🙏🏼
I tried Duolingo because your videos. Seeing how well it was able to teach you German, I used it as a study aid for my Japanese class and it ended up significantly improving things for me. It was also a great way to keep using Japanese after my class ended and not let it all fall out of my ear!! So thank you!!
Yes! I really needed this kind of video today! I haven't been feeling particularly motivated to learn Korean recently (I've only been doing the bare minimum, and not even putting much effort into that) and your videos always get me excited about learning more. Thanks so much, Evan!

I began to start learning French just over a year ago on Duolingo and I’m just starting back up at it again. However, when I’m not in the mood to do my daily lessons, I tend to go to your channel and these videos motivate me to keep learning as I see how far you’ve come in your language learning. I don’t know if it’s just me but when I see someone else talking about language learning, it just pushes me on to improve my French. Thank you Evan! ❤️x
I was already learning Spanish in school but you were one of the people that inspired me to try and learn on my own. I’m contemplating attempting ASL completely on my own. I found this video very helpful because I probably wouldn’t have known about a lot of the things you mentioned without the video, so thanks! This is probably one of my favorite duolingo updates. I REALLY appreciate the grammar sections. That lightbulb button is also available on mobile (yay!) and before it, I was very annoyed because it felt like duolingo only taught vocab and you couldn’t truly learn the language. It also really ups the value of the site/app as a learning tool, and in my opinion makes it more valuable. Of course, best possible scenario they would integrate the grammar into the lessons but this is definitely a good step. Anyway, just my thoughts.
My tree fell down yesterday and as I stood there trying to figure out how the heck I was going to clean up that mess I got a reminder from Duolingo to practice on my phone. So, I went and sat down on the trunk of my fallen tree and did my duolingo as my neighbors stared at me.
I have wanted to learn German for years, even took it in college but never followed through. Then I saw one of your older videos about how you became nearly fluent using duoLingo and I downloaded it that day and off I went. So you didn't inspire me to learn a language, but you inspired me to pick it back up and now I've learned more in a month than I ever did in college. So thank you for that!
I used the test out feature when I was using it with my Spanish class in school, I tested out of things that were easy and I knew well. I'd get the easy xp for the assignment
I didn't even knew reaching the fifth level is golden.. Learning Japanese basics was so boring to me, that I was just happy to finish the first level and move on :D (I had Japanese in highschool about 8 years ago for 3 years so I'm rather practicing what I still know rather than learning) But now I'm motivated to redo the first levels in Italian.
Your perseverance in learning German has encouraged me to pick up Spanish again. I’ve had a streak for almost 1/3 of this year and I’ve even started reading books in Spanish. You have made an impact and I’m really grateful for your determination.
Hey Evan, didn't find you before I started learning German, but you really keep me motivated. I am pursuing a degree in German and whenever I get bored I watch your German videos and they are always so funny and cheer me up and get me back into the German mood no matter how much I am struggling. Thanks Evan, keep up the good work
I've been using duolingo to re-learn the French I've forgotten from my school days (about 8 years ago). I used the testing out feature to quite quickly force myself to remember all of the stuff I did at school that was somewhat latent in my mind and the huge xp boosts were a big plus in motivating me in those early days so it's a little sad to see that that wouldn't be an option for someone starting now
Hi Even. Really great points. I use Duo on my mobile and it really looks much cooler. I must say that I have been using Duolingo on and off and You are the one person that inspired me to add another language and also keep up my streak. So a big Thank You to you.
I think the primary reason they changed the test-out feature was because they wanted to keep people on the site for longer amounts of time so they would make more off of ads. If your daily goal is more than 20 XP, then now you have to actually complete more lessons rather than just using the test-out feature once.
Thank you very much Evan I haven't actually started a language because of you, but you've encouraged me a lot, and inspired me to continue learning, whenever I feel lazy or not in mind to learn languages I go back to your lovely videos
I started the spanish tree at the beginning of the pandemic. Your videos have made made me happy that I started post the most recent updates. And your success with the app IS a huge inspiration to me. Too many reviewers in the language learning community only have crap to dump on duolingo (IMO). I don't feel that way. Please please please produce more content. I love your videos.
As a teacher I am happy that stopped giving points for testing out. My students would try and test out instead of doing each lesson and as you said they do not learn it as well.
Thanks for this post. I am quite new to Duolingo (learning French from English for now 42 days) and it is interesting to see such a review of its features and future development. Some notes regarding your German, though, at 0:16: You translate “Let's just jump into it” to “Lass uns einfach hinein springen”. Firstly, occasionally verbs and adverbs get joined to one word in German, i.e. “hineinspringen” would be correct. Secondly, “hineinspringen” is usually taken literally in German as if you are indeed leaping into a lake or something like that. But you just want to jump into your presentation. Sometimes “stürzen” is prefered as an alternative: “Ich stürze mich jetzt in die Arbeit“. However, I would prefer following phrase: ”Lass uns einfach loslegen!” - even if it is no longer a literal translation. Anyway, I hope you continue to have fun with learning German.
I may not have started learning a language because of you, but I did get back to practicing my German because of you. I took 2 years of German in high school and a semester in college, but without anybody to practice with I was getting a bit rusty and I knew I had forgotten some of what I had previously learned. I loved that you put out a video entirely in German, and I loved even more that I was able to fully understand it. You gave me confidence that my regression in the language was not so insurmountable that I couldn't pick it back up. Thank you, Evan.
It Would be interest have a social media where we could speak with some one else who be a native from the language we want to learn, no only seeing their xp instead add more options where we can bringing our experience to the next level, thanks for your videos, all of them are nice, and regards from Venezuela.
Hey Evan, just started Duolingo around a month ago, learning German, as a way to boost my knowledge of the language, as I learn German in school. Thanks to you, my knowledge for German has significantly grown to a point I didn’t even know it was possible for myself. Thanks for influencing me Evan!

Also like a year and a half ago i took up korean as well so that's going super nice for me ^-^ thank you for helping me expand my love for languages!
You inspire me to not lose my streak :)
Same! I’ve kept a consistent streak since I begun using Duolingo, because I wanted to have the same awesome bragging rights! I think I definitely would have lost steam for studying and learning, if it weren’t for that inspiration from your videos! Danke!
@@flowersandeverythingelse2369 i waas keeping a consistent one for the first time in years, and have struggled to keep it for two weeks. I start studying as soon as i wake up, to wake my brain up so I can get dressed on time. Today my streak was completely erased for no reason, and I was so sad.
Don't lose your streak or you'll lose your family

You made me want to do duolingo more, because everyone else said they couldn't even learn a language with it
The update is so cool! I finished the german tree from french and I did not know what to do next. But now, because of the new duolingo, I can learn new words with the german tree from english! It is awesome!
I started learning German because of you and now I have a 150 day streak! Ja!
Das ist cool!
Wunderbar!
Wait till you lose it
I do think that one of your first DuoLingo videos definitely had a big impact on the amount of German I studied per day - before I would use DuoLingo every now and then but these days I'm trying much harder.... videos, Tinycards, TV series, etc. So thank you for the inspiration! I love all of your language learning oriented videos.
I literally have a duolingo notification on my phone atm reminding me about my Korean lesson 😂
Imogen Harris You better do your daily Korean lesson. If you forget the lesson, Duo will forget to feed your family.

I actually did learn German because of you! :D
Ich auch
Found your videos after starting German myself! Very motivational! Please keep up the good work!
I was totally not holding him at gunpoint 😅

Id use duolingo but id like to keep my family
I started using duo after not using it fir a while because of your videos.
That said, I LOVE the update. Because I had learned a few words the first time I used duo, the previous update opened every lesson for me. I couldn’t test out if the first level. This closed everything back up, meaning I need to complete the lessons and giving me a huge sense of accomplishment
Gosh. The 2012 Duolingo Owl is terrifying.
I’m moving to Germany and your advice on duo lingo desktop and your humour bravery approach in learning the language encouraged me to pick it back up und ist sehr gut! Danke 🙏🏼
I bet duo push send flowers to his house for being such a good boi
Watching this 5 years later. Upgrades have been substantial. Yes, your enthusiasm for the program has had a positive effect on me.

I tried Duolingo because your videos. Seeing how well it was able to teach you German, I used it as a study aid for my Japanese class and it ended up significantly improving things for me. It was also a great way to keep using Japanese after my class ended and not let it all fall out of my ear!! So thank you!!
Everytime you make a Duolingo video I get the motivation to do French again! just started up again hahahah

I started learning German because of you and everytime you speak in German I try to understand! So THANKS YOU SO MUCH!
Learning Japanese basics was so boring to me, that I was just happy to finish the first level and move on :D (I had Japanese in highschool about 8 years ago for 3 years so I'm rather practicing what I still know rather than learning)
But now I'm motivated to redo the first levels in Italian.
Your perseverance in learning German has encouraged me to pick up Spanish again. I’ve had a streak for almost 1/3 of this year and I’ve even started reading books in Spanish. You have made an impact and I’m really grateful for your determination.

This is a creative joke! Nice work.
Thank you very much Evan
I haven't actually started a language because of you, but you've encouraged me a lot, and inspired me to continue learning, whenever I feel lazy or not in mind to learn languages I go back to your lovely videos
That reminds me, I haven’t done my duolingo lesson for the day
Elena Gibbons Pump your daily minimum up! One lesson is too low.😜
That tip on using Gern is so useful!
Although I was learning French before, your videos inspired me to use duolingo to help me learn more consistently!
I didn't know about the CEFR certified thing! I'm going to revise my French, and then add it to my CV :D
I started learning French about a year and a half ago but I slowly stopped around December... This video inspired me to keep learning, thanks Evan! :)
I just started to learn Portuguese after I saw how well you improved in german
I didn’t know about doulingo until I watched one of your videos and now I started learning Welsh because of you!
They should update the Japanese one to explain ha early on
I heard they are redoing the Japanese tree
Yeah, most people are gonna assume ha is always pronounced wa, they should fix that
I may not have started learning a language because of you, but I did get back to practicing my German because of you.

This made me so maddd when he said „gurn“ i was like wtf you are supposed to be fluent in german
@@garrettancel He can still be fluent and pronounce things incorrectly. I mean lets talk about the word brauchen and how impossible that is to say as an American lol
kaitey233 i disagree, you cant be considered fluent if you dont pronounce a simple word like gern correctly, because what else are you pronouncing wrong(many words more difficult than gern especially when gern is such a common word).. also i can say brauchen but have trouble with brechen😂
100% Went back into learning French on Duo because of your videos. Brushing up on 5 years in high school that I didn't retain at all, but definitely doing much better with Duo, and already have a better streak than I can remember having when I first started using Duo.
Omg I love Duo Lingo! And my niece and nephew do too and they’re in elementary school lol
I was already learning French via Duolingo when I discovered your channel but your enthusiasm for learning a new language has inspired me to push myself and do more to integrate language learning into my everyday life. I'm hoping to start reading easy books in French soon.

i used duoling for the first time probably a couple of years ago to learn italian but i felt like i was getting nowhere so i stopped. and then it was your last video on duolingo that really inspired me to start it up again because you actually managed to learn german from it. you really inspired me to give it another try and it's going really well. i even started attending italian classes (but have now stopped bc it's too hard to get to) and i've bought a few textbooks and will continue learning by myself at home. so thank you!!!
I started using Duolingo cos of u! Technically not started a Lang cos I started German in school
Started learning German because of your videos, I’m highly inconsistent but your videos have definitely helped me stay on somewhat of a structured schedule
I wish they added stories to mobile, I mean how hard can that be to implement.
Get on the desktop version via a browser, that has the stories. I had to click thru options in Chrome to make the desktop version the default. If you use different browsers, Google it.
I'm waiting for stories in more languages, love doing those.
Jsn they’ve added them now!
I started learning Russian from duolingo because of you!!!

Your dedication is truly remarkable and i hope i will be as diligent as you as well :)
I started learning swedish with duo bc of you!
@@elliewilliams9746 I'd like to be able to say I could have a conversation by now but sadly not speaking it besides learning 5min a day doesn't really help. but I kept my streak!
I wouldn't say you're the absolute reason, but between you and my school advisor, who uses it to review Spanish since he's fluent, you two's dedication to learning inspired me, currently I'm on a 44 day streak learning Spanish, French and Japanese mainly, with little bits of German, Irish, Esperanto, Swahili, Klingon and High Valyrian (so I can tell GOT fans I don't watch the show in HV).
