Both are pretty good and in par even though they are launched a year apart. In photos sony falls behind s9+ in dynamic range in comparison darker areas are dark. But wins in colors and details.(example petals of the flower) In video Sony falls behind in zoom, auto focus speed and exposure in comparison but again wins in natural color reproduction smooth panning and stabilization (more evident in 4k) even Samsung has really improved the stabilization over its previous phones. In selfies Xz premium smokes s9+ in color, details and wide angle.

The newer Sony cameras are much better than they were in the past. Sony is improving camera quality faster than any other OEM. I can't wait to see what the XZ3 has in store for us.
In brighter conditions the XZPREMIUM takes clearer stills such as in the selfies and the dog. Video is better exposed on the S9 variant but the colours are so bad. At least with the XZPREMIUM I can actually visualise the place but in the S9+ its too boosted
XZP still performs at par with the latest Galaxy flagship, S9+; although the comparison is not fair bcoz XZP is a year ago. U should compare s9+ with XZ2.
The S9 Plus' photos aren't sharper... Both phones take fantastic pictures in both daylight and lowlight. And even if the S9 Plus'photos are a tad brighter, on the XZ Premium, you can make the shadowy/dark areas brighter by using Photo editor. It's not rocket science. And if you brighten up the dark areas, it doesn't affect the quality of the picture at all.

I was impressed with the Sony and just grabbed a new one for £209. I don't think you can do much better than that, for such a quality product, even if it does have the ugly bars around the screen.
I am watching with my Sony XZ Premium. But even if I am a Sony fan, setting bias aside, S9 wins with the details since XZ Premium images are kinda blurry when cropped closer. S9 images are warmer and brighter low light while XZ Premium have darker contrasts. Thing is, I am more of a more natural color look than an unnaturally warmer look. This makes me stick with Sony. In the end, still Sony. Now I am aiming to get my hands on the XZ 2 Premium...
Sometimes i don't understand why sony is so underrated nowadays... Kids these days will never understand what sony used to be and what it is to actually use a Xperia phone rather than watching just an unboxing video
I'd say the XZ Premium. Samsung still tries to brighten up the photos more, which makes them look pleasing to more people. Also, the sky in 4k video was noticeably more realistic on the Sony.

I would, but the XZ2 isn't released here yet and it's not like it'll be inexpensive when it does. 😉 I don't get the whole "fair" argument either. If anything, I thought the XZ did very well and underscores why you don't always need to pay so much for the latest thing. In the end, I'll compare what I want. 😁

XZ Premium is a great device, but the camera sucks. I just sold it after 5 months of use because of the camera. Dynamic range is bad, shadows are absolutely being crushed and details are being smeared even in best conditions (especially bad with HDR mode or "backlight" in automatic). There is a reddish colour cast on almost every photo and 90% of the pics that are not taken in perfect lightning will look like crap. Even an overcast sky is enough to smear details all over the place. Manual doesn`t help either, as the only thing you can do in this mode to improve a daylight pic is preventing HDR from turning on automatically.
Lol, sorry to hear about your experience. It is a bit disappointing given I had pretty good results with the XZs with the same cameras. It's definitely hit or miss in low light without any OIS. In good light it's not bad to me, but I did expect better. Here's to hoping they have better results with the XZ2 given they say they actually worked with Qualcomm on a custom ISP.
Yeah, hit and miss is a good description for the camera. I got some amazing shots out of it, but others were just bad for no apparent reason, even in daylight. Anyway, they just announced the XZ2 Premium today with new camera tech, so let`s see what it will bring. This was my first Sony phone and i was very pleased with it, minus the camera.
