    Thank you for this video. As a plus size American it’s already difficult learning how to make your own clothes when it’s not part of your culture. And I love the fact that you put in templates or easy ways to measure to make sure the thing fits you appropriately. I don’t have a famous idea where I would even buy a lot of these things here in the states but I am slowly creating all of the layers to wear kimono

      Check and see if there is a Japanese cultural center in your area. Maybe a Japanese temple/ community center/ school/ church. Ours have a number of events throughout the year where many items are saved up for to be sold for upkeep of the facilities. Also, don't forget to check your library for construction books. Often books can be sent from outside your area if you ask a librarian for assistance.

      The fit is so important. And I don’t Iike that kimono culture tends to be anti-plus size. I’m here to change that 😊❤️

    This project was super fun to watch and I think I am going to have to try it out right away! I wear western-clothes, but many dresses come with a long "self belt" to tie at the waist. Often they aren't sewn as well as the dress and require ironing to look "correct" (most are suppose to be flat, like a ribbon, with pointed ends). But the Historical Obijime seems like a much sturdier, better version of the self-belt; I am going to try this out! (also the Obijime knot looks so clean and tidy) Thank you so much for teaching us about Kimono and helping people like me to expand their creative horizons! You have taught me so much about color theory and how to coordinate different materials together in ways I could have never come across otherwise.

    The sparkly graphite outfit is me fave. And while I'm not super keen on the ants..... if you had a cupcake print kimono or obi, and paired them with the ant obijime to a picnic.... it would be super cute! Especially if you have enough left to make one for your niece.
    P.s. if I got the terms wrong, I'm really sorry, I'm a little rushed right now to check. With adhd, looking things up ultimately result in deep dark rabbit hole journeys that totally sidetrack you from the task at hand. Have a wonderful festive season!

    MAJOR QUESTION: I’m sorry if this has been asked or addressed before.. I couldn’t find it if it was.. do you have any tips for those of us with larger hips? The skirt portion of my kimono always flare out like a western style skirt and the only advice I ever hear is to “pad out” to create the appropriate shape.. but then I either have to make my own kimono (because I can’t find one that fits), and/or look like a blimp, and overheat
    Please help!!!
    Or should I just give up 😢?

    When sewing two thin lengths of fabric together to make a tube, sew them on the diagonal. That way the seam is not all in one place to make a bump. This is from years of experience making seam binding to finish edges of historical costumes and cheap trim for kids costumes.

    • @BillyMatsunaga
      @BillyMatsunaga  10 месяцев назад

      Not for obijime please. The bump is nicely hidden under or in you obi arrangement. A diagonal seam might be visible according to the obi arrangement.

    Kimonomachi make a really decent plus size length obijime at 190cm long if anyone's looking for longer braided ones still.

    I really like the look of these, much more so than the braided obijime. The black one looked like a perfect match with the kimono, and the one from the Indian embroidered ribbon was so elegant. I have often been so grateful that men don't wear obijime because of my aversion for the braided type. I'm now a bit sad because I do like these that much! I did learn kumihimo years ago (and got one of the round braiding stands) and was sure I'd really love the look, but really only liked the look when done in a good wool. For some reason the wool when washed comes out just lovely and the silk or poly ones remind me of nylon braided rope, They are both after all round braids made with patterns in shiny materials and heavily patterned. The same sort of braid is used here for dog leashes and jump ropes and yes the patterns are pretty and they are so shiny, but really the thought "that looks just like a cheap dog leash" really makes me wish I had another option when doing an ensemble for a close friend and now I do! I'm sure in Japan there isn't that sort of association.

  • @cosmicbrambleclawv2
    @cosmicbrambleclawv2 10 месяцев назад

    Im new to the channel so it may have been suggested in the past but for turning the tubes inside out, perhaps a plastic tube like a half inch (approx 1 cm) diameter pvc pipe or a broken/cut hollow broom handle could help?
    I saw it on a geta making video, the man stuffed the fabric tube into the plastic tube and then captured/folded the last inch or so (2cm) over the edge of the plastic tube so the right side faced out and then just pulled the fabric back down the pitside of the plastic tube almost like he was turning a sock inside out
    It seems faster than manually turning with a safety pin 😅 (I know that pain all too well from having to fix drawstrings on clothes)
    He used the same plastic tube to thread strings and filler into the fabric tubes (stuffing the string wrapped in quilting batting into the plastic tube with a little hanging out the end, then sticking that inside the fabric tube and pushing it to the far side and grabbing the string/filler and slowly pulling the plsstic tube back out which left the string and filler inside the fabric tube)
    (I dropped the link to the video in question in a reply to this one after the fact, just incase my explanation was bad or anyone else wants to watch it to see what I'm saying/to make their own geta :) )
