    It is interesting that European-Victorians had the same "hollow" between the breast and the collar bone problem that Kimono has. For the Victorians the problem was that, no matter your size or natural shape, the corset would push everything around to make that "hollow" even deeper and more notable. The solution was also padding; if the padding was done with underwear then it would be done with little pads or by sewing on really dense ruffles from super-thin / lightweight fabric that could be gathered very tightly alone the sewn seam to then "poof" out. If the hollow was being filled by the outer layers then either crude pads (often made at home, or put in by a dressmaker) sewn directly to the inside were used or the padding could be built-into the layers of the outwear piece so you could never see it (this continues today with high-quality western business suits).
    I liked seeing your padding solutions here, it really helps to get "cross-cultural" ideas about how to deal with common problems; sometimes if one solution seems to not always work, there could already be another better idea already just a few countries / centuries over.

    Undergarments need to be discussed so much more when it comes to fashion, especially for traditional/cultural and historical dress. I've found that when people complain about the fit of something, they never even think about their undergarments being a major contributor to the problem. Undergarments are the core to the silhouette that you want.

    Oh, I have been waiting for this!! I have quite a big chest, what makes wearing kimono really difficult. Nothing sits right, even with padding, it’s really tough to get the right shape, so the collar won‘t open up or slip and slide everywhere. It might be the most uncomfortable video for you to make, but it is the most needed one for me to watch. ❤

      Same here. When I was living in Kyoto I was working in a small family business Kimono rental shop with traditional kimono mainly for 卒業式 and the Kitsuke sensei was the Obachan of the family. She always padded my huge chest perfectly (i'm a small 164cm tall 34DD 56kg girl) using towels, cancelling the unwanted curve chest and balancing with my over curved lower back compensating for this chest. I regret everyday not to have asked her in more details this padding technique because now back in Europe, I have a really hard time finding videos for this specific "physic" 😢 Your video is really helpful thank you

I'm a large chested woman and tried to use the sportsbra but the kimono didn't sit well, using the wrap over a normal bra and then padding gave me the shape and form I wanted. Thank you for doing these videos they are so lovely and informative.

    Hi Billy, so glad you are back on RUclips. I will sew a datemaki, to collect all necessary items to wear kimono. I am currently at the beginning of my kimono journey. I need to re-tailor my second hand kimono in regard of my wide hips, but the juban is almost finished. I practiced unshin to sew each seam back together with only a small seam allowance. Thank God, I do not need to change the collar. This is quite to complicated for me as a beginner😉.

    The Waso bra looks alot like the sports bra I wore in high school. The bottom support hem was much wider though, and it was quite comfortable since it was a cotton/lycra blend. It flattened the chest, but it doesn't look that it pressed down that much compared to your Waso.

    For me what I wear under my kimono is a wrapping around my chest. I will usually wear an ace wrap which you can by at walmart or a store like it for pretty cheap. I have no idea if anyone else does it or if it's even recommended at all. But it works really well for the shape I like, which is more flat chested, and it doesn't hurt at all!

    • @sonipitts
      @sonipitts 5 месяцев назад +2

      Just fyi, it is widely recommended to *never* use ace bandages or other compression bandages to do chest binding, because compression bandages are designed to in such a way that they can get tighter and tighter as you breathe and end up restricting breathing, cause fluid build up in the lungs or even cause tissue damage. (This has been a huge and ongoing safety issue in the trans community among folks without access to medically safe binders). I imagine if you're wrapping loosely enough it might not be an issue, but overall a non-stretchy wrap is probably going to be safer in the long run, especially if there's a risk that restricted breathing might interact with other factors (heat, medications, exertion, etc) in dangerous ways.

    • @emilyzee7483
      @emilyzee7483 5 месяцев назад

      @@sonipitts Oh I didn't know that! I myself have never come across that issue! Though thank you for telling me! I do make sure to never make it tight though so that's probably why I've never had any issues.

(I really prefer it because of the length and color, and my kimono sleeves are just the right length so they don't look squished in the haori sleeves, what are your thoughts about this?

    This is an excellent video, thankyou for making it.
    One of my problems has always been that there are no comfortable bras. Ive never had one, even when i was professionally fitted. I swear thise things are all designed by middle aged white men who seem tobthink they have so much say in a female's appearance. Yes, i know, that not true, but it certainly seems like it.
    I do just wear sports bras and have done for over 15yrs. I got sick of inderwires never being the correct curve for my cup size, the shoulder straps never long enough and blisters from the shoulderstrap adjustment buckles.
    You absolutely can fet sports bras that cut across your bust like the waso bra does, and still have room for padding, and i doubt very much any of it would show above the neckline of a kimono, a traditional kimono. Just look for ones with a scoop neckline and a scoop in the back too, and you shouldn't have too many problems.
    Sadly, they rarely come in anything but polyester and lycra, but, they do the job.
    I do, however end up with a pretty sweaty decolletage when I'm in my studio with the kiln goimg, and this only a t-shirt on over it! I'm going to rip off the pattern and make some new ones in super fun printed lycra....when i have time. Like you, im busy busy busy!

      If you are going to wrap something around your chest in any way tightly, it's not a good idea to use a stretchy fabric; so the stretchy kind of swimsuit fabric is probably best to skip, but there's probably non-stretchy fabrics meant for swimwear somewhere.
