- In this video I'm trying a flat braid with 16 sections for the very first time. It was not a complete disaster, but it also didn't work out as planned.

I felt the pain at getting the braid mixed up in the middle of working 😅 Totally reminded me of when I practiced kumihimo a couple of summers ago. After making a mistake it was usually way too hard to sort out what went where. I tried to make a point of always leaving my work in a configuration where it was obvious what came next, and never ever to start talking with anyone whilst working. Talking was a sure way to lose track 😅
That's beautiful! I'm also a fiber freak, but this is not a craft for a household with three cats so I'll just have to live vicariously. 😂
I know you think your red braid is not pretty, but it's kind of lovely to have such a literal path of progress when learning a new skill. Keep it as a reminder of how far you've come, and how quickly you can pick up the rhythm of a new pattern 👍

I remember in Germany there was a simple version of this as toy for children, once on a village festival I even tried a much more complicated one called Klöppeln, which could have over 20 threads and a flat 台😊. Also as child I made some similar braids in China, we have something like this as well. It’s so cool that many cultures have similar art ❤
I have also been reminded of bobbin lace (Klöppel spitze) but I now remembered there was something called "häkelliese" for kids to make a tube from string in a type of crochet motion

@@fionafiona1146 In the US the häkelliese are called "Knitting Nancy" and are usually made to look like little dolls. I remember spending hours and hours with mine when I was a child. Sometimes they're called knitting spools.
Yes as a fellow german we once made one from paper but i still have a wooden one at home it was always so much fun
I am quite tearful after watching you crafting. I have done many crafts over my 83 yrs. including what we called "friendship bracelets." Which now seems so pathetic. As Billy says she loves threads, fabrics and co;our. M e too. Soo pleasing . Thank You.
I'm saving this video not only because it will be just useful when (one day I promise!) I will get a marudai, but because you show in a very humane way that when you start something there are up and downs and you learn along the way. It is just a very good reminder and I think it can help a lot of people get out the comfort zone with something not so easily accessible as kumihimo.
Btw the sound of the marudai is just so enchanting, I'm forever in love with this amazing tool 🥰

This really reminds me of the flat plastic "yarn" keychains I used to make as a kid, it had a little foam wheel to use so you don't mess up your design, basically a knock of kumidai.
I remember them so well!! I was obsessed with those 😂😂 I made so many… I wonder where they all went 🤔🧡

I wanted to make kumihimo myself but all I could find was those plastic marudai. I couldn't fathom that traditional kumihimo was made this way. Now, I know. now I'll get to it. Thank you!!

What a lovely video ! For years i made kumihimo bracelets with a cardboard circle, the marudai seems so much nicer !

It takes me awhile to be able to "read" a braid to figure out where I messed up. I have a heck of a time with Kaku Yatsu and I'm not sure why that one gives me such trouble! Thank you for the close ups, I definitely learned something today!
I got myself some looms from a dollar store and learned how to knit from them. I think it would be nice to make that with the looms.

This is my first time watching your videos. I'm hooked!! Your work is amazing. I'm so glad you continued even after making some mistakes. It turned out lovely. We had Japanese exchange students for 3 years while stationed in Hawaii. It was the most educational & enjoyable 3 years of my families lives. You bring back some wonderful memories.❤

this was an awesome return Billy! Thankyou so much, kicking your husband out for coming home too early was super cute. I also adored that steely grey kimono, super lush! Going from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock and back makes a lot of sense if you want a flat result. For some reason I wanted to add a core and just keep going round (I have an issue with following directions exactly and have to add my own spin. Blame it on my ADHD and creative spirit as a designer maker, I accept that to understand a skill you have to follow direction first, THEN switch things up, but the ADHD brain doesn't want to wait for that!). But your results, even the wonky start on the red were definitely something to be super proud of.
Beautiful work. Both are lovely. But if you want, you could make the braid longer than desired and trim away the early portion if you don't like how it looks. 😊
That would also be an idea! But it still would be too short for an obijime then 🥲
Dear Billy, Big respect! It is so nice watching you moving the threads on the marudai, Very elegent. I have done a few simple ones on a himoplate, for the Shifukus which were needed for the Chadao practice......The mistakes repeated when the concentration just a bit away. I had to go back again and again ...its so time consuming... But the result and joy was amazing... Your 2 Kumihimos are very beautiful! I have done a lot of kumihimo but I have never seen that chopstick trick before!!! I will definitely be using it for my future projects - so smart!
To me, the hardest part of kumihimo is not the braiding, but the finishing. I'm terrible at finishing the cord. I have created a couple of necklaces and a key chain cord. I want to do a choker, but I really need to improve my hardware connections and sealing the cord. Mine look terrible! Of course I haven't done any of the more complicated patterns either. I've done round, square, and flat cords so far.
So, I’m not the only one who has a project “ speak” to you from a cross the room!😅

I love this video so much, and it actually led me to getting a marudai for Christmas last year as well as a bunch of weights. I don't have silk thread, but I do have plenty of yarn to use! I've been making colored chords I use for hair accessories and even made a couple of hat bands for my husband! I'm excited for the opportunity to learn more about kumihimo as time goes on, and I can't thank you enough for posting this video, or I never would have started!

This is my first video watching of yours. I loved watching your technique. It reminded me of tying friendship bracelets and plastic lace keychains as a kid. I am currently deep into crochet and knitting. I’ve even started doing micro crochet with sewing thread. I just love watching other people share the joy they find in their crafts!

I actually think this looks like something you could make yourself, or by someone with just a few wood working tools. Both of our local Home Depot and Ace Hardware stores sell small round tabletops with smooth, rounded edges as well as dowels. Just a thought.😊
I'm in the UK, but I got one on Etsy. It's not as pretty as Billy's, but it's perfectly serviceable (and nicer ones are available!)

I loved this video, and you did well on your braids. Something I wanted to ask though is, do you have to use kumihimo braids for tieing/wearing, or could you make one for the string of a purse/bag???

I am very new to the Kumihimo braiding, i find i get easily confused. until i get started then i seem to be ok. The tension has to be the same right through the braid or it doesnt look the same as what you thought it would. Do you find the same thing happening when you are braiding. I will be honest here i am not sure what i will use it for when it is done but i am sure something will present itself sometime. Can i ask you a question? What made you start braiding Kumihimo? Are you living in Japan? My cousins son Jack has moved over to Japan, his Girlfriend is Japanese. He is teaching English over there. The Japanese and Chinese culture is very different but both of these cultures have fascinated me for years now. If i ever win the lottery i think that an oriental tour would be in the cards for me. Thank you for sharing what you know and it is always good to see what you did wrong when the braid is finished. is it not easy to undo what has been done wrong? Thank you again. This is soooo soothing Billy! I'm thinking I'd love to pick this up too, but would have to make my own marudai I imagine. About the thread, I wonder if the store you buy from on Rakuten does ship abroad? or if there is a way to get it sent abroad from a post-box service? I went back and looked again, but it was still too fast-- how do you loop the thread on the bobbins, so they do not unwind, and you can unwind in a controlled manner as you need to make more length? I used to do macrame, and the hardest part was to know how much length to cut each cord-- then I bundled them up using rubber bands so I could manage them. I think lace-makers all over the world must know this way of making bobbins.

Definitely not something i can do without throwing it through the window. I am very dyslexic so this wholle left right, clockwise counter clockwise would have completely tangled up.
Congratulations on your lovely braids. I will stick with knitting my multi coloured socks.

He really really doesn’t want to be in frame that’s why I told him where the frame was and should just leave the room to make it easier for him and me. Because he would be angry with me, if he was in frame the whole time and I didn’t tell him.
