  • John G Adams and the team at Modern Design Aquascaping Inc. are putting together a wetland filter and a large boulder waterfall in this video. This is the follow up to "Custom Intake Bay For A Farm Pond" which showed the construction of the intake and overflow. This time you will see the second half of the project, going on in time lapse for the most part because it was a lot of work over a few weeks so we condensed it all down to less than 20 minutes! You can also see John jump in and catch a snapping turtle. There are also metal dinosaurs, and a stainless steel duck made of pots, pans, and kitchen ware...just saying. Enjoy!

    This plus the intake bay vid were very interesting seeing these two filter systems being used on the same project. I think I would be horrified at the maintenance for the intake bay but I can see the need for one (when the pond scale and funds allow!)

    That really turned out great. The time you guys took on getting the whole thing level and later, when the liner was being back filled, shows as much as I need to see to understand you believe every little detail matters. Will there be a part 3 or some kind of follow up on this? I'd love to see how that natural pond clears up with the wetland filter and biofalls in place now.

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  4 года назад +4

      Yessir, every detail does matter! I will shoot a video after a year out there. I am also going to do the time lapse voice-over to really take the opportunity to teach the “how and why”. A lot of the success of the filter will depend on the maintenance and care, as well as the guys out there taking care to use bacterias etc. to help break down the organics. I was told by the people caring for it that water in the pond had cleared to a 4’-5’ deep visibility after a couple months. When we started you couldn’t really see down into the water, a foot at most. We are pleased with the results so far!

    Could you please do a follow up on this to show how the two filtration systems you installed affected the water quality in this pond over time. The snapping turtles will crawl overland to find it again and again but they are Jurrasic. I'm binge watching your videos, have several questions but won't ask them yet because they may be addressed already and don't want to waste your time. You cover a lot of details, thank you. Theres a lot to know and understand, you are a great teacher.

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the kind words! The turtles are forever! They are in the lower pond, the upper pond, and coming down from up-stream. They will never be gone😂 The water quality and clarity in the pond is much better now. You can see down into the water several feet whereas there was no visibility prior to the filter addition. The project is a few hundred miles from my house but I’ll get back out there someday. There was def room for a bigger wetland here, I think because of the inflow of fresh water, the smaller filter is doing a great job. Super happy with the improvement of the feature. With maintenance and products to break down the years of accumulated sludge, I forsee a constant improvement of water quality over the next few years👍

    Great vid john, what is the pool size vs filter size, and pump sizes for the wetland

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  4 года назад

      The filter is a bit small for the pond, but we made it as big as we could to fit the budget. Also the pond has a nice spring that feeds it with a constant overflow. We normally shoot for 10% of pond surface for a larger feature filter BUT money, environmental situations etc. have a place in the decision making process. Pumping 20k GPH currently- intake is designed to handle (and operate optimally) at 40k GPH.

    Hello, thank you for your inspiring videos. I would like to make such a system, but in all your videos the ponds are not very deep. It is winter in our country and for wintering fish, especially koi, people recommend a pond depth of at least 160 cm, is it possible to use this system in deep ponds with a water surface height of 160 cm? Thank you

    • @KoiAddiction

    This was awesome! I live in Cleveland TN. I'm curious what a project like this costs? I actually have 2 ponds that are tiered and something like this would be great for our outdoor space and ultimately be something our children could enjoy as a swim pond. Just a ball park figure would work for the moment. Blessings, Jason

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  3 года назад +1

      This project was about 150k turn-key. LOTS of variables could impact that massively though. We were going for WOW, cost not the big issue on this one. It could have been 1/2 that much and still function.

  • @conquestguy
    @conquestguy 3 года назад +1

    What an incredible looking project. Question: when you use the wetland filter to feed the waterfall how much more TDH do you calculate for the water resistance running upward through the rocks? It would seem to me that if I want a certain GPH over the spillstone then I would have to calculate some loss to account for having to lift (push) the water up through the filter. Thanks

    • @KoiAddiction
      @KoiAddiction  3 года назад +1

      I typically don’t add any. I figure what I want and design on the high end. I guess I could test that but if you are cleaning your filter annually, it’s not an issue. The water on top is the majority and it is creating most of the flow for the waterfall (in many cases). That portion comes out unrestricted on top of the wetland. If you really jam up your filter with plants, it may have an effect but using a higher head pump it should not be an issue and the resistance will change as the filter develops. Add a few feet of head pressure and call it a day!
