Awesome pond! What a fantastic place you’ve built to enjoy life. Just the standard I’ve come to expect from you guys! Attention to detail on all aspects - from the planting to the design and all in between it’s just impressive.
Modern Design Aquascaping Inc. Definitely the negative edge skimmer, I am putting one in my pond. I have watched your negative edge video multiple times too.👍👍
Hi John, I am "studying" your videos more than 1 year constantly. Super videos, most informative and beautifull water features, too. This one is the most attractive to me. Just pure beauty... Thank you for such work, that inspires . 💟 💫
Long Cedar log works great. I did a gravity overlap on the liner there that leaked and I had to go back, tear it out, and do a seam-then re-build...Mom always said it’s cheaper than college ;)
The Hydro-engineering that went into this water feature is mind blowing! Not only is it stunning, it's absolutely brilliant. Thank you for sharing and inspiring. Cheers, well-done Guys!
This pond is just amazing. Another awesome build from you John. Love your enthusiasm and presenting style too, great channel full of great info and knowledge . Look forward to all your videos , all the best from England
Thanks so much kind words from people like you Keep me motivated to keep crushing out the content. It is often a thankless job :-) hope you had a great weekend
They are a lot of parts: the rocks, the plants are amazing, a like the feeding stone, the view of the pond and the most what i like is how u create the negative edge i truly love it
OMG. I just watched this for the second time and laughed when John talked about not having to worry about spiders when hanging your feet over the edge of the interaction rock. You don't know how many times I wonder about spiders lurking beneath the ledge of my deck that cantilevers over the edge of the pond. I need an interaction rock instead. LOL.
This is my favorite pond to date. If the negative edge reservoir is 2 times the moving water, in order to catch all the moving water if the pump goes out, how do you have standing water in the negative edge? You would think the negative edge reservoir has so much capacity that water would not accumulate... leaving just wet gravel and plants.
The ideal goal is to have a full reservoir when you plug it in and then the reservoir is operating at 50% fullness and has the ability to catch all moving water. The homeowner is here opt to plug it in and then fill it all the way up. That causes the water to overflow the water in motion when the power goes out but it also creates a water change at the same time so there are benefits to the situation.
That is gorgeous. We live in Michigan, and are considering an ecosystem pond. A couple questions: 1) Will this ecosystem pond work in the colder Michigan climate (Zone 6)? 2) What happens to the pond, water fall, etc during winter freeze? Thanks for posting these very informative and all made videos.
Yes- simple process for winterizing the feature and everything is fine till spring. I have friends who build in Michigan and have pond companies in Michigan.!
This is one of my favorite ponds as well, I don’t have a favorite part it’s the total package, I can use your magic here in California. My wife and I just relocated, the only thing I miss is my pond and large Japanese Koi. I want to install a pond, but after watching some of your addicting videos, I am now spoiled and wonder if I can find someone with your talent and knowledge here. Too bad you are in Tennessee, can I clone you?
We are going to be building in the San Diego area in December with some friends! Stay tuned :) Have skills-will travel, do you really want to go down that path? We can make it happen😎
John amazing job! Can i ask about water pump what is there? Will you have any video for swimming ponds? I mean something about water pumps how to set up electrical connections, or how to not kill yourself. :) wish you all the best.
John - First - thank you for all the great info! I think I have my head around the combined surface water & stream "water in motion" calculations. It makes sense and is easy to calculate. My question is in the water reservoir/pit. I figure maybe 5-600 gallons of water in motion. I have few questions here and I hope you can take the time to help. 1- How much depth of water in addition to the water in motion do I need? 2- I plan on using some aqua blocks in the base, but how do I calculate the area of gravel for water volume that might fill that area? Gravel is much cheaper, but obviously that means a much bigger hole, liner etc. which all costs time, area and $$. Is your gravel layer thin on top? 6” maybe or much more? Is the “pit” mostly blocks or gravel? 3- My pond will be about 14K gallons, how deep is the typical reservoir volume for a pond this size? In this video it looked like the reservoir was full and it had a few inches of surface water in it - nice place for “jumper” to survive the leap 😊. Is that typical to have surface water in the reservoir area? 4- I think I want an external pump system with a “snorkel” to pump out sediment. Do you always use submersible pumps, or do you sometimes use external pumps? I know this is a lot of questions, but I really want to get this right. Before watching your videos, I was going to use a traditional plastic skimmer system, but I like the negative edge much better for a large pone. Thanks again John H - Grand Junction Colorado.
The gravel down below the zero edge is cleaned very simply. We just turn the pumps off and clean the reservoir below with our standard pond cleaning equipment. The way that we build the holding area below the zero edge has an access, called a centipede, which gives us access to the very lowest point of that reservoir. That allows us to clean below the negative edge independently of the pond. The water entering this reservoir through the gravel below is technically going into a mechanical filter. This gravel captures all of the debris and here you are expected to physically remove it. There is not much biological filtration going on here at all. The portion of the pond that does our biological filtration is the upflow wetland filter which creates a waterfall back into the upper part of the pond. I am uploading a video on how we build one of those as I speak to you, and there will be a video to follow that shows a time lapse of the construction process and how it makes a waterfall back into the pond at the end. So after all of this blabbering did I actually answer your question? Let me know & have a fantastic day😎
I love this pond would like to built a comparable negative egde in my new built, but there is one part I don't understand. Behind this negative edge you see a small "pond", so I guess this isn't the reservoir for the water in motion, right? Is there a hidden reservoir or does it overflow somewhere when the pumps stop?
There is only the pond, and the negative edge reservoir is the lower “pool”. That pool is where the water in motion is held during a power outage! It holds several thousand gallons sub-grade.
Ok, but normally the water drains to the stones right away in the reservoir, but here it seems that there is always a few inches of water above the stone, how can you achieve that? Normally you see a zero egde end in somesort of pondless pile of stone, instead of the small pond you see here, which is what I would like to see
So you can use what we call a bib liner. Basically a false bottom to hold pooling water. This is easy to achieve but hard to hide. That particular job he just keeps it full and then when power goes out he looses water in motion. We have done bib liners plenty of times though! Just be sure the overflow area doesn’t become too small to allow proper infiltration of water flow!
We filled our lake before constructing the wetland and it only took 3 days for the water to get green. Wetland will be ready in 3-4 days. It is designed according to your specifications. How long do you think it will take for it to clean the water?
Lots of variables. It’s like a new fish tank, it will take time to balance out the system. We always add pond and lake treatments as well (the rid-x for your septic system). You will need to add that as well. Algae control is always different. In my swim pond I use Wetland bacteria and debris clarifier for the algae. How big is the pond?
Its 42” deep if I recall, might be 48. Pond is roughly 24’x26’-its been 7-8 years😂🤣Waterfall on rt side is 4’ wide fed by wetland-left side is 2’ wide fed by spillway.
Jon Batt Yeah that’s hilarious probably 12 large blocks. 1.5 centipedes and a 5000 gallon per hour pump flow rate. That was one of my early wetlands I would do a lot of things differently than I did on it but it still works :-)
Yes I would. You can clean wetland and neg edge with a drain-rinse-clean & only do routine maintenance to pond itself BUT each pond is different. You can just watch system and determine needs in each location. Pond may only need vacuuming and leaf-debris removal if you practice good maint and don’t let stuff build up over time. We have a big pond we have treated this way coming into its 4th year and we think it’s finally time for the full drain and clean.
@@KoiAddiction Thank you! I am hoping with an under gravel “down flow” system that full draining pond cleaning won’t be necessary very often. I think we will be driving it will Air-Lift pumps. Some of the folks in Europe are getting fantastic results from those. They are getting as much as 2,900 gallons per hour water flow from a 20 watt pump! So simple and so cheap to run. You just have no head pressure - no lift. But if you want to drive a filter at or below pond level, they are amazing. For my application I will probably run 3 x 20 watt air pumps in the main pond floor for about 10,000 gallons of pond volume. I will break it up into 3 smaller sections and the outlets will create nice current at the surface to drive debris toward the neg edge. I think the combo of wetland, neg edge & under gravel filter will really work well. It adds up to a lot of natural biological filtration. I hope so anyway :). Merry Christmas to you and your team - your videos have been inspiring

Hi John, thanks for showcasing this pond. Some great ideas. I am curious, how many pumps are in this pond? Where are they located? Thanks John.
Sorry, just found this comment XO There are 3 pumps in the negative edge reservoir. 1 to wetland-1 to waterfall on left side-1 to the jets.

Intake bay to pull the water in - just make sure you design the inlet depth where it will perform properly at low-water level!
