Restoring a Broken $2 Tetris Handheld. 9999999 Games in 1

- Опубликовано: 29 фев 2020
- I bought this old broken Tetris style brick game hand held console for restoration for $2. You can also buy similar devices new for the same price, but sometimes it's about the journey, not the destination. I don't know what math they used to calculate the promised 9999999 games, but I think the real number is a bit under 3000, mostly different variation of Tetris. The console is badly yellowed and dirty, the audio doesn't work, some screws are missing, and there is a lot of rust on the contacts.
I started by disassembling the console. Somehow I was surprised how cheap it was on the inside. Not sure what I expected... I found the audio was missing because one of the wire was loose. I suspect some parent may have done that to make the device silent because the sounds were really loud and irritating. The wire was easy to solder back on.
Second issue with the device was the corroded terminal for battery. This happens when a battery is left on the device and it leaks. This can sometimes ruin the motherboard but in this case everything was fine. I desoldered the terminals and put them in rust remover to get rid of the rust. After this I re-plated the terminals with nickel. Here's a tutorial to DIY nickel plating I made: • How to make simple DIY...
It was necessary to prevent them from rusting again. If I wanted to do an upgrade I could have fitted new terminals from a Gameboy because those are made of copper which is far better conducting.
I also removed the yellowing from the plastic shell which was supposed to be colorless. For this I used the same retrobrighting method as always. H2O2 and UV-light. Full tutorial here: • How to remove yellowin...

Hey there, just wanted to let you know my 10 year old daughter’s favourite thing to do before bed is to watch one of your restoration videos with me. It’s great daddy daughter time. Her favourite part is when you organize and line up all the parts after disassembly. Cheers, and keep up the great videos.

I had one of these ones back in '97, the same model and build. About 15 years later, while digging around a shed my father stacked things into, i found this lying in an old box. For curiosity's sake i turn it on and not only is it working, it has a tetris game my dad had on level four while paused. Fun fact: you can pause, turn it off, turn it on and it will still work, but to have it locked up 15 years, still saved up and with the same original batteries was just amazing. I still have the console around here, but i changed the batteries.
Good storage condition, then.
Cooooooooooollll
Wow
I have about 70 of the older Brick Games (~1990-2001) in 2021, and obviously I know about the pause function working when turned off, but to have one keep a game for 15 years is amazing! These UM6510s are very good to batteries (although my 9 in 1 ES99 and 300 in 1 E300 arrived from Italy both with corroded terminals - coincidence...?) whereas the earliest single-game E23s drain any batteries left in them.

For the longest time, I was trying to remember what handheld it was my dad owned when he was still around. After watching this episode, you've basically helped me remember. He didn't really let me play it, but I snuck my chance when I could because he was an arrogant you-know-what and I was a bored kid that didn't like going outside in an area where mosquitoes and hornets would tear your skin apart in the summer (and, despite being near the woods, we weren't allowed to play in the woods because he couldn't see us, so we had to risk sunburns, too).

The only difference is that instead of a Chinese made knock off machine like this one, she has been upgraded to a pour owner of a Game Boy Advance as a gift from her favor son --- me XD
