I did a double take when The Cyclone made this list. It's the freaking Cyclone! Almost lost to an aquarium, sigh. No other coaster is so obviously a landmark in that EVERYONE has heard of it, even if they have never been there. I haven't been there, but I know that ride well from movies, old radio shows, and just hearing about it from my dad, who has been there.

I LOVE that they saved WHIZZER. It was so much fun to take our kids on their first "real" coaster where they sat "safe and sound" on our laps! (Lol!) I love the design of the train! So unique! Now we're about to take our grandson! Can't wait! Thank you, SFGA, for taking care of this classic, Schwarzkopf coaster!❤

Thank you for the history of Knoebels' Black Diamond. I thought it was a Knoebels original like Flying Turns, but it was a former Jersey shore pier ride? And it was filled with asbestos? Wow. I guess back then, asbestos removal would be less problematic than it would be today. Knoebels is truly a unique amusement park.
--- I wish they would acquire a double Ferris wheel. The ride is amazing, but they are so hard to find.

Another coaster that almost closed here in Britain is Vampire at Chessington World Of Adventures. It's an Arrow suspended coaster originally built in 1990 that had issues with the ride system and the trains beyond repair at the end of the 2000 season, and with Arrow obviously gone bust getting the parts required was next to impossible. Fortunately Vekoma was able to design 2 new floorless trains which saved the ride from being torn down completely :)

My home park, Arnold's Park had a similar dilemma in the late 80's. The entire park was slated to be demolished to make room for luxury hotels. This would include the 1930 wooden coaster The Legend. The public came together and raised the 5.5-million-dollar compensation in just 6 weeks!
Due to the declining structure, it was rebuilt in 1989 by GCI and again in 2021 by GCI. I hope this was interesting to you!

@@HugeRMCFanBoY-bx3odShockwave was very problematic and caused injuries. Coaster College made a What Really Happened on it a few years back. Basically its problems doomed it to a short operational life, and it took 2 more iterations of the 7-inversion mega looper to mostly solve them, hence Viper being the only one still operating.

I came to the video for the X-Coaster thumbnail! I worked for the park in 2009-2012. I remember all the ride ops wanting to ride X one more time at the end of the season, because they were planning on selling it. When I came back to the area in 2014 and saw X was still there I asked a former ride supervisor what happened. He told me the welded track story.

For me, it is The Phoenix. I grew up about 30 minutes from Knoebels in that part of PA. Regardless of the official name, us locals generally referred to it as Knoebels Grove.)
Back then, they also had a thing call 3 Buck Night. From 6 or 7 to 10pm on Wednesday or Friday you had unlimited rides. One memorable time, my brother and I rode the Phoenix 10 times in that short window. I don't know if there is anywhere else in the world with a world class coaster that you could ride 10 times in 3 or 4 hours under NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS.

RE: Skyloop, we have one of these in Australia that almost closed forever. It operated at Dreamworld in Queensland as Buzzsaw, before it was relocated to Victoria in 2022 where it was rethemed, repainted and now operates as Project Zero at Gumbuya World. So it is possible to dismantle and relocate them!

In Brazil there's a coaster that almost closed forever, but thankfully it reopened! Star Mountain at Beto Carrero World. The ride closed 2022 for regular maintance, reopened after one month but then closed again for more than seven months. The park never said a thing, but we were afraid to lost it suddently, like FreeFall (1st gen of drop tower). By december 2022, Star reopened and now, rumors says the park has planed to buy a new coaster and retire the classic ride.

A lot of these coasters avoided closure because of fan backlash... Really reminds me of past Disney attractions sparking fan outrage when announced for closure.
But Disney is not the type of company that would just fall for said outrage like the much smaller companies mentioned on this list, and Tony Goldmark even justified these closures by saying that Walt Disney himself wanted Disneyland to always evolve with the times and not be a museum preserving its attractions in amber.

    • @thecinematicmind

Back when the original Flying Fish closed down the backlash was huge and so the replacement came, mainly without theming and a slower ride experience. However I come to accept that Thorpe Park thankfully kept a piece of history for families which given the majority of the family attractions were replaced, I accept it these days.

Haha that buyer for X Coaster was Elitch Gardens. I remember when it made the news that we might be getting a new coaster buuuut it never happened lol

I love how not one, but two coasters on this list were saved by Knoebels.

Venom in defunct Camelot Theme Park is one of those roller coasters. It closed years before the park did, and was sold to Cornwall's Crealy Great Adventure Park and rethemed to Morgawr.

I'm glad phoenix and black diamond still are in operation. Have you been on Wildcat's revenge? If so, did you like it?

Cyclone was my first coaster when I was 7 years old. Now after 50 years….. I still love it. I ride it at least once a year.

Did you know that the Cyclone has its own baseball time? They are a minor league affiliate to the Mets and are currently called The Brooklyn Cyclones.

I thought Flying Turns at Knoebels was the ride where they lost the blueprints?

No mention of Superman at SFNE? It was almost torn down after its accident until it got the Ubrick lap bars.
