Hercules was so rough that my wallet fell out of my back pocket and it was velcro'd shut! I couldn't find out where I lost it and when I finally went back to the ride and asked if anyone had lost anything on the ride, they just laughed at me and handed me a giant box, lol.

Waited 3 hours for son of beast the year it opened. Word in the queue was that it was running 10-15mph faster than expected in the first few months after its debut. I was 14, so could take the pain, but my old man rode it once and said enough.

I think I have the Son of the Beast to thank for my back pain, It didn’t help that my brother told me to push my back against the seat as hard as I could, so after the first drop I got the wind knocked out of me and couldn’t breathe the rest of the ride. Only rode it once and that was it lol

I wasn’t even a year old when it came out, but my dad rode it opening day and said that that was without a doubt the worst roller coaster that he had been on. He blames his lower back pain on it to this day. He said that when you hit the bottom of the first drop, your back would immediately start hurting

It's definitely interesting and ahead of its time. That second part may have been the problem though. It was ahead of its time. The smoother rails and stronger frames used by modern steel coasters didn't exist yet. I give them credit for trying such an ambitious ride for its time however.

I rode Viper before it closed and I remember it well. It was the first ride to break while I was in line for it. We managed to get on before the end of the day and it was horribly rough. We also rode Great American Scream Machine. As a kid, my head was between the restraints and I got off with ears that we're totally red from banging around. My trip to Great Adventure was downright horrible and dangerous.

  • @gibbage1
    @gibbage1 5 лет назад +28

As a survivor of both Flashback and Wind Jammer. Flashback was so rough, much of it was a blur. I never truly understood the layout even after many rides. Wind Jammer didnt have 2 identical "racing" tracks. It has a smooth flowing side, and a angled jagged side, to simulate two different "personalities". Shortly after opening, people realized the jagged side sucked, and nobody would line up for that side. That would mean short lines if you could suffer though it. Not only was it a bad coaster (both sides were bad) but people HATED the ride because it replaced Soap Box Derby. Many fans tried so hard to keep that classic steeple chase ride, just to have it be replaced with such a failure. Many people boycotted Knotts in general, that contributed to the rides quick demolishing.

    • @Telefiend

I went on Mean Streak back in 2013 and multiple times when I visited Cedar Point before. I went on Magnum XL in 2013. The Mean Streak wasn’t a bad ride being a tad rough. Magnum XL was awful and really rough. Banging you around and smashing your thighs.

    • @clarinetJWD
      @clarinetJWD 4 года назад

The first few times I went to Cedar Point, I adored Mean Streak. I was young, so a rough ride didn't murder me yet, and it just hauled through its layout.
Then the trim break was added. It took a rough, but fast as hell ride, and made it rough... And boring.
Mean Streak will still always be one of my favorite woodies, though, from those amazing early memories of it.

It's definitely worse. You had the option of something actually unique with headbanging...versus somethign not at all unique (not even to the park let alone in general) with headbanging...and that breaks your legs and entire midriff areas too. I would've rather have seen a vacant lot for 2 years and them have actually replaced it with something remotely worthy. Park looks stupid when you enter now too, was total eye candy, and was more popular in the latter 2000's then it had been from pretty much 1997(Chiller)-2004 (when they put superman: underwhelming flight by it).

@@oneandonlysound3453 might also add that the restraints around your head also result in head banging in green lantern. My bf had a headache after riding it and we had to take a break for like an hour. Everytime I ride it have to really brace my neck (might also add the only reason I ever re-ride it is when taking someone to the park for the first time, otherwise I just skip it).

I don't think people truly appreciate what arrow dynamics did for the coaster industry! Their coaster were a bit rough around the edges because they didn't have computer models to determine perfect track configurations and g-forces like these companies have today. They had to engineer everything the old fashioned way while also pushing boundaries to create bigger and better coasters. They were literally doing what nobody else would do in order to continue the coaster legacy.

  • @Telefiend

The idea that there are worse rides out there than Flashback is disturbing. Riding Flashback was literally standing in line to get punched repeatedly in the side of the head, and since the roller coaster turned the exact same way every time, you got punched in the exact same spot on the side of your head every single time. Every turn slammed your head into the over the shoulder harness and there was nothing you could do to stop it. It was brutal.
I never rode the Windjammer, but boy was I angry when I found out Knott's took out the Soap Box Racers. I loved that ride. It wasn't exactly thrilling, but it was fun.

    • @briannabrittany3127

So true about Flashback. I hated that ride. You'd come off that ride with a crick in your shoulder, your ear having been smashed relentlessly against the harness, and your head banging against the side rests. Words can't describe how miserable that ride was. I remember someone asking me how it was after I rode it the first time, and I said, "it hurts" and he thought I was using some new slang term for "cool" or "awesome." He even asked, "what do you mean, it hurts?" I said "I mean it HURTS. Painful. Not fun." They should have stationed a chiropractor at the exit.

The cool thing about Flashback was that it was the only Intamin Space Diver ever made.
But I’m not trying to defend this coaster.
Riding Flashback is the equivalent of flying a fighter jet while navigating stunts for an air show while your head gets punched in the head by boxing gloves from both sides causing your head to ricochet constantly from the blows of the punches.
Getting punched by an actual boxing glove is less painful than this hairpin drop abomination.

Have to take issue with your bit on Steel Phantom. It was not negatively received by enthusiasts at all. In fact, for its entire run at Kennywood, it consistently ranked in the top 10 coasters in the country. When the park announced it was coming out, they received tons and tons of mail and emails from park goers and enthusiasts imploring them to reconsider, hence why they decided to renovate it as opposed to demolish it. Not sure where you heard it was negatively received across the board but that is simply inaccurate. There are articles around the internet and videos on youtube to support this.

I don't think people actually anywhere near have the hate for it like it seems to be expressed on youtube. There are so many comments all over about how much worse Green Lantern is, and I agree. In fact, to me, green lantern is the worst coaster at SFGADV. There's also a "love to hate on arrow" fad that still hasn't ended which doesn't help with the now known knowledge of the drachen fire mess up, or how badly some parks have maintained the smaller models, or removed the huge ones out of pure laziness. I can't go to six flags GADV for a season without hearing someone at random in any section of the park comment almost exactly "removing great american scream machine was the worst decision they ever made." And I agree. It's also an easy target because it's more well known than say, the two demon's, or it's sister that got killed 7 years prior, and people do mistake those smaller ones for vekoma's as well.
But this is the same video saying people hated Steel Phantom and it's "inversions" when only the cobra roll was even considered rough. THey honestly could've added another loop in a wierd straight section that never had an explanation for existing and changed out the cobra roll for another element/a big turn or something.
ANd with no real evidence but "ok, looks wierd, had to have been intense" on a wooden coaster that closed in 1946. So the credibility is severely lacking.

When Viper first opened at Six Flags Great Adventure I loved it. The layout was great.
If they had changed the restraints and reinforced the structure they could have improved the ride experience.
But Great Adventure is known to let their rides go without any extra care to prolong their life.
Rolling Thunder is a perfect example. Slapping a coat of paint on it every five years is not maintaining the coaster.
Rolling Thunder should have been re-tracked and better trains should have been added in the mid 90’s.
But that’s Six Flags Great Adventure for you. They would rather let rides rot, remove them and invest in whatever the new fad is.

The first roller coaster I road was Steamin' Demon at the Great Escape and that ride is far shorter and far more horrible on the corkscrews. The Comet is also a fantastically good coaster but I honestly really wish I could ride the old Crystal Beach Cyclone layout in its painful glory.
Also, Kingda Ka was closed on the day I went to Great Adventure. However I got to ride El Toro while having to take a shit. I won, but I was glad there was a bathroom next to it. I went full on RCT guest mode.

The Great American Scream Machine was fun to me! I got to ride it in 2007 and I had so much fun! I got to admit I rode it a second time before I left the park that day lol

I got to ride “Son of Beast” the year it opened (still with the loop)..
I can definitely vouch for the loop being the only smooth part of the ride. I had bruises develop from it, but back then it was all part of the fun, as I was 17 and could handle it. If I tried to ride it now (approaching 40), I’d probably throw out a hip lol.

I was there for the opening of Z-Force at Six Flags Over Georgia. I remember being unimpressed with the length and getting my brains beaten in. I also rode Drachenfire at Wiliamsburg. I was a bit freaked when they said women should remove their earrings. Sure enough I had a headache for the entire day that was exacerbated by the sickly sweet malty smell that permeates the entire park.

I can’t wait until you come to Six Flags Magic Mountain and try Viper, I actually thought Viper was better than their B&M floorless Scream, judging by the povs, GASM looked Rougher. But I’m surprise how much Hangtime Viper gives and I’m glad we have the last remaining 7 inversion Arrow looper, I hope you find it fun when you come. Anyways amazing video!

I'm shocked that there is footage of these coasters considering how long they've been gone (especially of Cyclone)

As painful as it was, I miss the steel phantom. Phantoms revenge replaced it. It’s fun but has no loops.

Great video as always. Growing up with Magic Mountain being my home park, flashback has to be my favorite ride credit. Time and time again I would visit the park and admire such a unique coaster that was never open. That is until one trip I was in line for viper and could hear it running. We raced over and after so many years was able to finally ride it. They would eventually shut it down about three hours later and never open it again. Painful, it was very painful.
