Hey Travis, I have watched this video probably 50 times before I purchased my California Trimmer, and I must say thanks to you I was almost perfect my first mow 😂 Love the channel and thanks for all you do!
That’s awesome. Appreciate ya sharing that. Glad it went well. Exactly why I make these videos. Hopefully they’ll save some folks some time by them not having to learn the hard way like I did. Haha. Thanks again. Appreciate you.
I’ve come to realize how important views, comments, follows, and likes and notifications are to the success of a channel. I love your channel and it’s great! I love the information and knowledge you put out! Thank you for all the education and entertainment! Definitely been looking at reel mowers. A bit intimidating but super exciting.
Best video on the california trimmer, I bought the exact same about 2 month ago, agree with everything u said, it gets easier and more enjoyable every time, I love it
i guess Im randomly asking but does any of you know of a trick to log back into an instagram account?? I somehow lost my password. I love any assistance you can offer me!
@Otis Kamden I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
You definitely aren’t the only one who had to learn about not lifting the front roller. You have some smart friends 😜. But wait... was that... was that some editing I saw there?! The one take wonder has compromised his format?! 😂 good work buddy
Awesome, honest review. And man I wish I had seen this before I got a gas reel, the lifting up on the handle bars is a HUGE pro tip! That’s made all the difference in my mow. I didn’t realize how much I was lifting the front and I almost gave up on it before I figured that out. I also like how straight forward you are about the labor involved in owning and using a gas reel, easier than a manual but still not easy and you have to stay committed to the adjustments etc. great content man, thanks for these videos!
Thanks man! Amazing how such a small tip can make such a huge difference. I really appreciate your feedback and support. Goes a long way and is never unnoticed! Thank you!
Thanks. Even the company couldn’t have explained it as well. Mine is on the way and I’m trying to learn as much as possible before it arrives . You and only one other reviewer answered all the questions most people are looking for.
Awesome, so glad you found this helpful. You're gonna love it. I've started a playlist on the channel page with some other videos about. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Not only is it aesthetically pleasing to look at, but it also gives me the boost of confidence I need to deliver the goods in my vids. 10/10 Recommend. 👍
I was doing same with my new McLane,. I now put 1 hand underneath and lift up. Just a little. Works great, still learning. I enjoy your videos, keep up the great job. 🤠
I got the chain adapter but haven't got the handle extender. Don't know that I will. I've got really long arms, so the handle is at a good height for me. I don't want it up any further. I appreciate ya watching and commenting. 👊👊
I did my first mow with my new trimmer just like yours and these tips were sooooo helpful. I decided to come back and watch the video again. I definitely didn’t think the learning curve would be this different 😂. But By the time I got to cutting the backyard, I was starting to get the hang of it. Can’t wait for next season to get here for more mowing 😂. Thanks again!
Right on! Happy they were able to help. Haha, I bet I sounded like a wuss, but it really is pretty different. Glad to hear it got better in the back. It will just keep getting easier and more enjoyable. Piece of cake for me now. Next season will be awesome! Congrats on the new unit! Appreciate ya very much.
Budget Lawns LOL, i was curious at first to hear your feedback on the differences, but anybody after power mowing for the first time would come to same conclusion as you and I did i don’t think they would be calling us wusses 😂. Can’t wait for future mows to get more and more comfortable with it. Next season is gonna be schweet 😂 Thanks Again!
My CT should arrive in 10 days, and I'm watching all the video's I can, thanks for all the good pointers, I'm sure I would have done exactly what you did. I did order the front roller as well.
I bought the same one in the beginning of spring and I’ve had a blast. It is definitely a slow process, but the end result is awesome! There was a bit of a learning curve but all good now. Good job with the video!
I have to admit, I chuckled at a couple of these. But then I’m “classically trained” in the use of greensmowers. 🤷🏼♂️ You are right about the learning curve. I tell folks all the time, the first few mows are going to kick your tail! Watching this has given me an idea for a good video.
Haha. I'm sure lots of folks are getting a kick out of it. You're right though. They did kick my tail. Big time. Lol. I'm past it now. Getting better each time. Thanks for watching man. I appreciate it.
Bought the same reel last week and got the same result. I’m 6’4 the bar extension is a must lol already on order. Second cut I figured I was lifting the front up by accident myself so did the same as you and much better outcome. You’re yard is looking good!
This california trimmer seems like the best bang for buck for anyone getting into gas power reel mowers. I feel like every other brand I look at starts around $1500 and up. While I've seen the CT start just around $1100. Great video btw.
Thank you very much. Appreciate that. I agree. Entry into a power reel is pricey no matter what. A CT makes it much more affordable for sure. Especially not knowing if it's gonna be something you want to keep up with. It's a commitment. Thanks again for watching and the feedback.
Awesome video. I am one week (3mows) into reel mowing with my 20" McLane. I am having the same learning curve with turning and lifting the front roller off the turf. Well not so much me lifting but my yard is so bouncy it pops it up.
Thank you. Right on. Congrats on the reel mower. Yeah, it can be a bit of a learning curve. But it gets way better fast. I just finished mowing and thought to myself how much easier it was. Only my second my of the season and already in the groove. Appreciate ya watching and dropping a comment!
My biggest thing about the trimmer is that it's only 20 inches. I need something like a 25 or 26 inch cut. But am looking forward to whatever my first reel mower turns out to be.
Just fired it up today after a warm up it runs great & works. It was doing a brush hogs work, not what it was built for. This machine is ancient-2hp Briggs & Stratton. Reliable, started readily after I'd stall it. Runs well, but needs a new belt for the reel drive soon. Seemed better than rotary mowers I used c1980.
out of all the California Trimmer videos I watched, you were the first to mention picking up a little on the handles. I appreciate that. When I had the JD 220B, I had to lift up a little. Eventually I was told, the grasscatcher is extra weight in the front as intended by the factory. But who uses that?? :)
Great tips Travis. Especially the light upward pressure on the handles to keep the front end down. I just got my grooved roller for my 1985 Trimmer and can’t wait to try it out.
Thank you. Yeah, it's definitely a small adjustment that makes a big difference. Awesome. You'll love the roller. Congrats. Appreciate ya watching! Enjoy that mow!
Thank you. Appreciate that. I'm glad I'm not the only one. Didn't think I would be, but dang, I felt like a dog chasing my tail the first couple times haha. Look forward to more CT talk with ya!
Budget Lawns I took a link out of my chain connecting to the rubber roller drum. I raise it when I make my turns and it gives me a “little” more clearance but still drops enough to get traction. I still practice the rolling turn method you described. Sounds like we had the same criteria when choosing a reel mower. Pound for pound this is a solid mower for sure.
Great feedback. I've been thinking about pulling the chain up a link with a bolt & nut or a zip tie. I raise it when I turn too. You nailed it. Sounds like we've go through the same things all the way through. It's a great mower no doubt. Really pleased all around so far. 👊
Great tips and something to know, I am currently mowing with a manual reel mower just seeing how it go’s I too only have size of lawn like yourself and happy with my manual reel mower as we in down under going into spring I will enjoy the mow 🇦🇺
Thank you. Nice, those manuals are great little mowers for the price. Good luck to ya this season! I'm sure you're ready to get going full steam ahead! Appreciate ya watching.
Great video man! Enjoying this series. I just purchased an older one made in the 80s. Restored it and and I'm loving it. May consider a new one later down the road. Look forward to you new videos on this topic. 🍻
Thank you. Glad you're enjoying it. That's awesome. These mowers are beasts. I'm sure the restored one works great. I bet it was a fun project too. Appreciate ya following along!
What you mentioned about turning the mower I think is why some may prefer TruCut because they have a clutch drive that you can feather rather than the lever you have to turn on or off on the McClane and Cal Trimmers.
Yes, I think you're right. But the more I've used this, I have gained much more control over my speed and don't have any issues going around objects. Thanks for watching and the feedback. That will help other folks out. Appreciate it!
@@BudgetLawns I am thinking about getting a reel mower but not 100% sure which to go with. I have several smaller (800-900 sq ft) rectangular grass areas in my yard. This means I have to do a lot of short runs and turns. Makes me think the cal trimmer might be cumbersome but not sure. Do you have to use the mechanical drive to move the mower or can it be pushed manually for shorter runs?
It would be tough to push without the drive roller down because of its weight but could be done I guess. I wouldn't recommend. That's a tough call on such a small space.
Budget Lawns I love your videos! I found my cal trimmer basically abandoned at a park last fall. It’s an older model. I had my local mower guy get it running and sharpen the blades and it works great. I’d like to get a front roller soon. I’m mowing at about .80 or a bit higher. We had huge wind storm blow through last night here in Portland, OR. I have a lot of clean up before I reel mow again. You can reel mow over debris!
Thank you! That's awesome. Heck of a find. It doesn't take a new one to do the trick. Just a little TLC on an old one and you're in business. Nice job. Hope ya got cleaned up after the storm. I love storms but the mess can stink some times. Appreciate ya!
@7:30, I've found that putting a heavy brick in the front catcher helps to keep the front of the mower down without having to keep the upward pressure on the handles.
@@BudgetLawns If you prefer to not catch the clippings, maybe you can fabricate some sort of weight that hooks onto the front instead of the catcher. I just prefer the cleaner look of catching the clippings. I cut every other day so it's usually not a ton of clippings anyway. That does mean I have to stay on top of my fert though.
Not bagging does add to your fertilizer for the year...around 25% of what's needed. But like you said, some folks don't want the clippings on the lawn. Sounds like you're on top of things! Well done!
@@BudgetLawns weighing down the front of the mower to me also helps to get a truer, lower height of cut. If you've got really thick, dense turf, the mower tends to just glide on top of the canopy.
I noticed that with the manual reel mowing. Was hoping to not see the same with a power. I'm just now getting thickened back up after a late summer scalp, so I'll keep on eye on that.
Thank you. Yeah, the tall fescue and bumps will make that a no-go. But it sounds like you're killin' it with the rotary. Nice job! Tall fescue looks amazing when done right! Keep up the good work! Appreciate ya watching and commenting!
Subbed!!:) I am a super newbie in powered reel mowing. it's definitely a learn. i have Allett mower and im sure your tips can apply to this mower as well. very helpful video. thank you!
Love your channel; really appreciate all the videos. I’m still wrestling with switching over to a reel mower and will probably follow your path of starting with a manual reel mower to make sure I can handle the commitment. Question: In regards to being consistent in mowing every other day, what do you do when you go on vacation for a week or two, or work requires you to travel occasionally. Is it hard to rebound from those life events?
Thank you. Appreciate your support. Definitely worth giving the manual a whirl first. This season I’m gonna cut back to mowing only twice a week. Every 3 or 4 days so not so frequently. If I go on vacation or have time away, I just get right back into the swing of things. Really don’t change anything. Some folks may slowly bring it back down to their height of cut. I just get back to it. Good question. Thanks again!
@@BudgetLawns Not very happy right now. Looks like straight out of the crate, i have to do a clutch adjustment. Mover does not move and blade not spinning!
Well said exactly why I want it also glad you hit everything I noticed as well thanks bro for a great video and keep up the great work👍 Height adjustment ✅ Reel to bed knife ✅ Smaller for closer obstacles✅ Honda mower like all my equipment✅ Lifting up on the handle is new Thanks! Roller I'm not concerned about digging cause my big league lawns roller on the honda mower made me more delicate on the turns. Question did you get the high or low cut model?
After watching videos like these, I know how much of a commitment power reel mowing is. That is why I’m on year 3 or 4 of using my GW manual reel. I don’t use it all season, but come fall overseed time, I use it quite a bit! So my plan is to be able to make bedknife adjustments (check) and backlapping (unchecked), then when I get that powered reel, it won’t be as daunting.
Why am I on here looking for one and I only have 500sq feet. I want strips. Ahaha my next house, must have a huge lawn of Bermuda. But I guess I'm shopping for no reason. Dreaming...
I watched a lot of videos on all the reel mowers. I went with Swardman. I like the big rollers in the back that don't tear up grass on a turn. liked the color options. liked the B&S as I've had them for decades. have you ever used a Swardman? would be interesting in hearing your comments on them.
Unfortunately it's very hard to "test drive" the different reel mowers for most people. If your lucky enough to live near a company that sells a few brands, you can make a much more informed decision. Not saying anything bad about any mower, trust me. Personally...I'm glad there are as many options out there for homeowners.
Will it cut close enough for a putting green,,want to make sure before i make a 1500 investment,,seems they should all come with front rollers to avoid scalping
It only goes down to about .25 with the roller. So it just depends on how low you wanna go and how fast you want your green to roll. Some guys use em for that but if you’re wanting true green height, a used greens mower may be a better option. Hopes this helps. Thanks for watching.
Great Job Felts.. Love the Cali Trim.. got one about two months ago.. right in time for the scalp.. mowing 2-3 time a week and dialing this thing in. Great Job on review and WPS!! Question. Do you Ever mow barefooted?
Right on! Go Hogs Go! Appreciate ya watching and commenting. No, I don't mow barefoot. I gotta have that shoe support haha. I don't see how guys do it.
For sure. Great tip. I already do that at the end of each pass. For this season, I've modified the lift chain by bringing it up a few links with a zip tie to get the wheel up a little further. Thanks for watching and bringing that up.
Is there a way to scalp on a budget. 500sqft. Buying a nice reel mower for a few thousand to scalp once a year won't happen. My ego mower mows to lowest of 1.5" it says. So I need a cheap way to scalp to 1/2 every spring. Any ideas???
Is the cal trimmer made in the USA, or is it only assembled here? I'm thinking about getting one. Hoping its made in USA. Great vids.Love the content. We are kinda going down the same road this year.Bought my first manual reel mower and now looking to buy a powered one. Do you know how it cuts on slopes? My front yard has a big slope. Thanks for putting in the time and effort into making these vids.
I believe it's made right here in the USA. Thank you for the kind words. Yeah, it definitely sounds like we've gone down the same path this season. My lawn only has a slight slope in the front, so I can only speak to that. It handles it really well. Slower going up it slightly but no issues. I guess it'd just depend on the steepness of your slope. You're welcome. Glad you find them helpful. I appreciate the support.
Hey Travis, Awesome Video. I’m about to pull the trigger on getting a Trimmer as well. One thing that’s really hitching me is the engine choice. I’ve had B&S engines on a few mowers in the past and have had no issues at all. What are the benefits of the honda that everyone is so head over heels about? Is it worth the extra $150+ for the honda over the B&S? Your advice is appreciated. Thx.
Thank you. Appreciate ya watching. Glad ya liked it. I was just raised on buying a Honda. I've never had any problems with one so the reliability and longevity is a huge plus. That's not to say that the B&S engines aren't any good. I know folks who have em and never seem to have problems either. It's kinda like Nike vs. Adidas back in the day. Everyone had to have Nike but it cost more. Was it really worth it? In the end, it's up to you and what you can afford. I think you'll be happy either way.
Budget Lawns thanks for replying. yeah i figured that was the case. i’m a nike guy through & through 😂. i went ahead and ordered the honda just like yours & T. Winnings through Home Depot. However, i did order the grooved roller from Reel Rollers instead of buying the one that comes from the factory. I am so excited to start cutting with some power. My manual 16” reel beat me up really bad this season 😂. Thanks Again.
Heck yeah! Congrats. Super exciting. I feel ya. I had all I could handle with the manual this summer. If you're gonna play the game, gotta have the right gear. Can't wait to get your feedback! Solid choice!
I'm getting an old one tomorrow. Checked it out, it runs well, has a sheetmetal grasscatcher in good shape. No manuals, should I try to contact Trimmer. They are in Ontario Cal.? As a kid in Los Osos a neighbor had one and I was fascinated. I used a rotary on ours and my Grandparents lawn.
Right on man! That's awesome. Congrats. You can try and contact them. You may be able to find one online. The latest manual is for sure on their website caltrimmer.com/. You're gonna love it. Appreciate ya watching. Have a great weekend!
I made a halfhearted try at starting it this morning. It has a 2hp Briggs & Stratton engine. The overall unit is clean, but shows age. A week ago Ronnie, the seller had it started up, but took some warning befor he could engage the blade and forward motion. This feels older than the rotary machine I used in the later '70s. It is an old enough gas engined device to have picked up eccentricities, having driven mostly '60s machinery though gen-xican. My 1969 Toyota Corona had to be warmed or it would die. It was a reliable car after the initial warm up. It was basically driving a Bug sized Galaxie.
Sounds like it just needs a little warming up. Even my troy bilt with a Honda needs it after sitting in winter. I like the sound of the unit though. Older machines have so much character and will still do a great job. Thanks for sharing.
I'm guessing these aren't worth a hoot for a lawn with a lot of tree debris and hills.. I have both, but would like a little feedback- as I like the cutting action of a reel mower, but only have rotary mowers as of now.
Yeah, a lawn full of debris with hills prolly wouldn't work out in your favor with a reel mower like this. Now some people mow hills with them, I just know it's tough. Check out The Lawn Shark here on YT. He mows a steep hill with a Toro Greensmaster. It's a challenge for him, but he's figuring it out. He'd be able to give you far more feedback on mowing hills as my lawn is fairly flat. Definitely can tell you, though, that it needs to be free of debris for the most part. Appreciate your question. Thanks for watching! 👊
Do you still have recommend the California Trimmer? I had 2 old Mclane years ago and they cut great, but was a maintenance nightmare (but they were old). My yard is huge and I'm ready to go back to a rotary. My biggest concern is Honda vs Briggs. You bought the Honda, but what's your thoughts?
I do recommend it. For me, it’s got everything I want and need. I’ve just always had Honda engines so I went with what I know. Other folks seems to be just fine with Briggs. I will say tho, that my new house has a slightly bigger lawn than my old with lots of slopes. About .25 acre. If you’ve got a busy life, keeping up reel mowing on a big lawn is tough. Plus I’ve learned over time that you can still have a beautiful rotary mowed lawn. I will be rotary mowing parts of the new lawn and reel mowing others. I think a good blend will be nice. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching.
I've got a mix of both common and a hybrid variety. Not sure which one as it's all what the builder installed and I didn't know any different at the time. Thanks for watching and your question. Appreciate ya!
@@BudgetLawns I am thinking of planting a Bermuda grass lawn. Problem is I don't know what a common bermuda lawn looks like or a Monaco or hybrid looks like. The hybrid seeds are very expensive. Your lawn is incredible. Can you point out the common bermuda sections. Thanks.
The front lawn is all common except for the very ends of the lawn along my neighbors' property line. The back is all hybrid. It's possible to have a very nice common bermuda lawn for sure. Hope this helps. Thanks again.
Yes, it's sold separately. It's the 20" classic unit. I've got a playlist on the channel page about reel mowing with more details if you wanna check it out. Appreciate ya watching and commenting!
Don't give up just yet. But you definitely wanna know some ins and outs before making a mistake. It's way different from rotary mowing for sure! Thanks for watching!👊
I’m in a new construction house so I haven’t used it this season until the lawn gets a little sand love. But I left off happy last season so that shouldn’t change. I’m in the northern part of Arkansas. Bermuda grass.
On this mower, you can't. The drive wheel and reel are connected, so when one spins so does the other. But I can tell you, it's tough to push across the lawn without the drive wheel engaged. It's a heavy machine. You need a self propelled system to even use it. Appreciate the question!
Chris Sobczyk, I have a Cal Trimmer from the late 90’s and you don’t have to put the drive wheels down to spin the reel. Mine has two levers, one to engage the reel, and one to lower the rear drive drum. The reel will spin and the rear drive will as well, but it doesn’t have to be touching the ground. It floats above it by 1/2” or so, so you can mow slow around a corner or something like that. My dad has a new one and I swear his works just like mine, but maybe not?! I’ll have to check it out now.
Chris Sobczyk, it glides very easy and if you have a fairly flat lawn, it rolls pretty easy. Even up my incline in my front yard, still pretty manageable.
Could I ask how wide is the entire unit 24”? I know the reel is 20”. I’m thinking of buying it and want to make sure it will fit in certain spots in my yard
It'd take ya some time to mow an acre with it. If it stays really wet, I wouldn't recommend. It's heavy, so I wait until my lawn is dry so it doesn't rut it up in the soggy spots. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Budget Lawns it did thanks I just love watching the videos of powered reel mowers they just make the yard look so nice. If I keep up on the mowing that part of the yard doesn’t always seem to have as wet but yeah I’ll probably have to look into another potential replacement for my self propelled walk behind
Has it been very reliable? And how is it on a bit of a bumpy lawn? I was gonna get the fiskars stay sharp but I might just test it and if I like it I will try to get my hands on one of this.
Very reliable. Works great on the bumps, especially with the front roller. I think you'd be pleased if you get one some day. Thanks for watching. Appreciate ya!
Why is this called a California Trimmer? Is it a specific American brand? Can't seem to find powered reel mowers here in Ontario Canada without looking at the 4 to 5k options bought from specialty stores like John Deere, and they are typically classified as a Green's Mower.
That's the brand name. Yes, it's an American company on the west coast. That's crazy you can't find them there. Maybe just not a big enough market for them. You got that right about green's mowers. Way to expensive if new, but you can find them online used at a good price usually. I'm sure some of these American companies ship there. Worth a shot. Appreciate ya watching.
I forgot to add...good work on the video. Most reel mower videos take the approach of the viewer having experience with these. I learned more in this one than all reel mower videos combined that I’ve seen.
It's a great mower!! Let me tell you about grass. It's not going to happen over night. Mite be two years to get the lawn you want. The grass your cutting is not the same with a rotary mower. And I can tell you how to make it a mulching machine
I mow around an inch, so I can't attest to how well they work on tall grass. However, most folks use power reel mowers to mow low. For this model California Trimmer, the optimal cutting height is 1.25" and below, according to the owners manual. They have a high cut model that works better on taller grass, 1.25 and above. Hope this helps. Thanks for your question and watching.
You fill the oil to the top of the fill neck. You shouldn't have to ever figure out how to get some oil out because you thought you over filled it. It will simply dribble out of the fill tube if you poured it into the engine too fast. I Wrenched for Honda and serviced power equipment for 10 years. Thanks for the video.
Depends on your cutting height. The lower you go, the more frequent you have to mow. I can easily get by mowing every 3 days if I stay around an inch, which is where I like it. The folks mowing every day or every other are most likely mowing .50in or under with a greens mower. In that case, twice a week won't be enough. Thanks for the question buddy!
Oh boy. You're opening up a can of worms there haha. Call me crazy, but I'm not a stripes in my lawn kinda guy. I like the bermuda carpet look. That's a whole other topic for another vid. I'll be putting out my Lawn Care Unpopular Opinions Part 2 video soon. It may just be in there. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@BudgetLawns braaahhhhhh! Stripes all day every day with those reel bad boys. Would love one of those big powered beasts but I make do with my push reel. Makes great stripes ;)
Badmansband not on Bermuda. If you are getting lasting, defined stripes, you’re encouraging “grain” and setting yourself up for a world of trouble with thatch. The reels, especially greensmowers, will stripe, but Bermuda grows out so quickly the stripes are usually short lived.
Used a 20” CT today as my Tru Cut is getting sharpened. Totally awful experience, nothing is easy on it, don’t cheap out buy the Tru Cut, there’s a reason it’s the industry standard. Even pushing the CT was a chore, try both and you won’t look at the CT. My TC is about 10 years old, the CT was 2 years old and paint is rusting off already. Don’t throw you money away, do your research.
To each his own I reckon. I've talked to no less than a dozen people with Cal Trimmers and not one has spoken of an experience like this. Do your research and talk to more people than just listening to Jim. That's how I ended up gettin a CT. Heard a lot of bad about Tru Cut and never anything bad about CT. Thanks for the comment tho. That makes 1.
@@BudgetLawns I am just encouraging people to try both before buying aka do their research. My neighbor bought his without trying anything else and he regrets buying the CT after using my TC. The TC are mechanically more complicated but nothing is difficult if you have any mechanical ability.
I know you are. That's exactly what you're doing. As they should. I'm not mad about it. I appreciate you giving people that info. I just gave my research experience back. In the video, I never make any references to other brand units. At least I don't recall doing so. I just wanted people to know that I had done my research and asked around before getting a CT. All indications pointed that it was the right unit for me. Plus I wanted the least complicated machine mechanically. I had been told from Tru Cut owners just as you mentioned that they are more mechanically complicated. Not that I can't figure things out, I just didn't want to. I enjoy the conversation. It helps people learn. Thanks for being part of it!

That is a fine looking hat! 👍🏼
Now it’s time to take it to new level and get the extended handle kit back game changer
I got the chain adapter but haven't got the handle extender. Don't know that I will. I've got really long arms, so the handle is at a good height for me. I don't want it up any further. I appreciate ya watching and commenting. 👊👊
Great video. I was looking for California Trimmer videos and didn't find too many. Thanks for putting this together.
Thank you. Appreciate it. Glad you found it. I've got a few others in a playlist on the channel homepage if you wanna check 'em out. Thanks again.
👍 best reel mower vid out there! This manufacturer ought to pay you for this service! Good luck!
Wow thank you. You’re too kind. I really appreciate that!
👍👍 hope it helps. Appreciate ya watching. Congrats on the new mower. 👊
I bought the same one in the beginning of spring and I’ve had a blast. It is definitely a slow process, but the end result is awesome! There was a bit of a learning curve but all good now. Good job with the video!
Awesome man! Glad to hear it gets even better. Worth it for sure. Appreciate ya watching and your feedback!
Thank you. Awesome. Congrats on the new machine. Funny how we go through the same thing. Glad you figured it out. Appreciate ya!
☀️Yep, I’ve done the same on my Allett pushing it down and all. 😂🤣 I now mostly hold it with and under grip like curling weights. Great video!!😎
Haha. Too funny. I like your style. I've experimented with that one too! Amazing how much that slight lift up helps. Thanks as always man!
I'm getting one "reel" soon but if I needed more convincing this would be the video. Great job!!!!!!!! Love your videos.......
Sweet. Bet you can't wait. Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
@@BudgetLawns your last few videos are making it very hard. You are much appreciated 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
@@russellmartin3880 as are you. Thank you.
I have that earthwise manual mower, I took out the plastic roller and replaced it with a industrual metal belt roller, drop in
👍👍 thanks for watching and sharing.
My biggest thing about the trimmer is that it's only 20 inches. I need something like a 25 or 26 inch cut. But am looking forward to whatever my first reel mower turns out to be.
Good stuff, nice review. Definitely a learning curve, but that cut quality makes it worth it!
Thanks bud. You got that right!
Right on man. That's awesome. A few tweaks it sounds like and you'll have it running like a well oiled machine. Thanks for the update. Excited for ya!
out of all the California Trimmer videos I watched, you were the first to mention picking up a little on the handles. I appreciate that. When I had the JD 220B, I had to lift up a little. Eventually I was told, the grasscatcher is extra weight in the front as intended by the factory. But who uses that?? :)
Thank you. Appreciate the feedback. Yeah, that’s a no on the grass catcher for me too. Pain in the butt unless scalping. Thanks again.
Great video. I’ve had a CT for a few weeks and had the same “What in the hell have I done!” thought my first mow. Your tips and takeaways are spot on.
I just got my first reel too. Great tips for next year cut. Thanks
Right on! Congrats. Appreciate ya!
Seems like a ton of fun enjoy it buddy 💚💚
It sure is man. Thanks bud!
On Point Info as Always Bro 🤙🏾🌱
Appreciate ya buddy!
Excellent video post!
Thank you! Have a great weekend!
Very nice looking yard.
Thank you. I appreciate that. Thanks for tuning in!
@@BudgetLawns Couldn't pass it up! $50 was a steal. They are absolute workhorses.
Oh heck yeah. Gotta get it for that price.
I have a cal timmer and I love it.
Right on! They're great mowers for sure. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Informative as always. You are the man!💪💚💚🌱
No, you're the man! Thank you brother!
Great video man thank you
Appreciate ya. Hope it helps.
Sweet video! Great information. I love mine!
Thanks man! Appreciate that! Great mowers for sure!
I been using a Fiskars push for the last 2 months. I bit the bullet and just bought a Rolux.
👍👍
Finally!!!💯👏👏👏👏👏👏
👊👍
Awesome!!! Great tips! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! You’ll be sponsored man🇺🇸
Thank you bro! You the man! 👊
I push my mclane forward on the front wheels when turning and backing up. This seems to eliminate almost all the damage when maneuvering.
That definitely helps too. Great tip. I've got a roller, so I try to turn on it in spots too. Thanks for the comment!
@7:30, I've found that putting a heavy brick in the front catcher helps to keep the front of the mower down without having to keep the upward pressure on the handles.
That's a good idea. I don't ever catch the clippings unless I'm scalping. I'll give it a shot the next time I do. Thanks 👊
Nice video. Wish I could use a reel, however, tall fescue and terrain forbid it. Hence, my Honda HRX 217 gives me the best lawn on the street. 🤠
Thank you. Yeah, the tall fescue and bumps will make that a no-go. But it sounds like you're killin' it with the rotary. Nice job! Tall fescue looks amazing when done right! Keep up the good work! Appreciate ya watching and commenting!
Subbed!!:) I am a super newbie in powered reel mowing. it's definitely a learn. i have Allett mower and im sure your tips can apply to this mower as well. very helpful video. thank you!
Right on. Thank you. Congrats on the reel mower. You’ll be a pro in no time. Appreciate ya watching and commenting. Glad to have ya here.
Informative video!
Thank you! 👊
Thanks, just ordered one!!
Awesome. Congrats. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
Finally came in today!!!
🎉🎉👍👍
@@BudgetLawns Not very happy right now. Looks like straight out of the crate, i have to do a clutch adjustment. Mover does not move and blade not spinning!
I had to make an adjustment on mine. Reel was spinning when cranked up. Sorry about that man. Hope ya get it straightened out. It’ll be worth it.
Well said exactly why I want it also glad you hit everything I noticed as well thanks bro for a great video and keep up the great work👍
Height adjustment ✅
Reel to bed knife ✅
Smaller for closer obstacles✅
Honda mower like all my equipment✅
Lifting up on the handle is new Thanks!
Roller I'm not concerned about digging cause my big league lawns roller on the honda mower made me more delicate on the turns.
Question did you get the high or low cut model?
Boom. We're on the same page. I got the standard low cut model. Thank you for all the feedback! Your support means a lot!
Solid plan. I like it. Appreciate ya watching and commenting.
Almost 10K views! 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽
Sooooo close. Thank you! 👊
Rotarylow for life. PITTL!
Haha. No does it better than you!
This is the REEL DEAL folks!
My man! 👊 Thanks bro!
Mulching……what happens with the clippings? Early Spring, I usually mow 2x a week and with the fast growth a lot of clippings.
They break down and become fertilizer for the lawn. I’m actually working on a video about that topic. Thanks for watching.
Why am I on here looking for one and I only have 500sq feet. I want strips. Ahaha my next house, must have a huge lawn of Bermuda. But I guess I'm shopping for no reason. Dreaming...
Nothing wrong with that. I’d enjoy that 500sqft tho. Bigger lawn, bigger budget, more time…
@@BudgetLawns no stripes!
I watched a lot of videos on all the reel mowers. I went with Swardman. I like the big rollers in the back that don't tear up grass on a turn. liked the color options. liked the B&S as I've had them for decades. have you ever used a Swardman? would be interesting in hearing your comments on them.
Thanks for watching. Congrats on the mower. Never used one but hear they’re nice. I’m sure you’ll love it. Have fun. Thanks again.
Unfortunately it's very hard to "test drive" the different reel mowers for most people. If your lucky enough to live near a company that sells a few brands, you can make a much more informed decision. Not saying anything bad about any mower, trust me. Personally...I'm glad there are as many options out there for homeowners.
I feel ya. Just gotta do your research, dribble, shoot and hope for the best. 👊
Ready to see some cutting footage. Also where do you buy one?
Home Depot sells 'em. Here's some mowing action for ya! Thanks for watching. ruclips.net/video/XmpFn7qp5LU/видео.html
Reel and bed knife. Please explain that. I been thinking of getting a reel mower and keep hearing this.
10:55 is a truth bomb !
For sure! It's not a one size fits all mowing lifestyle haha. Thanks a bunch for watching. Appreciate ya!
Lift the rear roller when you turn at the end of a line.
For sure. Great tip. I already do that at the end of each pass. For this season, I've modified the lift chain by bringing it up a few links with a zip tie to get the wheel up a little further. Thanks for watching and bringing that up.
What’s the best beginner reel mower between $1,500 - $2,000
??
I would look into California Trimmer's line of reel mowers. They have their classic models and have been coming out with some new stuff recently.
Is there a way to scalp on a budget. 500sqft. Buying a nice reel mower for a few thousand to scalp once a year won't happen. My ego mower mows to lowest of 1.5" it says. So I need a cheap way to scalp to 1/2 every spring. Any ideas???
Go with an earthwise manual reel mower. I got mine for a little over 100 bucks. Goes down to 1/2 inch. Good little machine. Hope this helps. 👊
Is the cal trimmer made in the USA, or is it only assembled here? I'm thinking about getting one. Hoping its made in USA.
Great vids.Love the content. We are kinda going down the same road this year.Bought my first manual reel mower and now looking to buy a
powered one.
Budget Lawns Yessir! Thx Again.
@@SplashBucketz you bet bro!
How is it when you come to the end of a bed and then you want to back up a little bit and then make a turn is it possible to pull it in reverse
I raise the drive wheel to make it easier to pull backwards. Still heavy and not particularly easy, but easier. Thanks for the question and watching.
Once you get used to it....it’s more fun, your yard looks better. It’s another level of “everything” when you get a reel mower.
Couldn’t agree more! Second season starting off so much easier. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Do you have common bermuda lawn??
Is the front roller sold separately.. what size is the one you are using (20”)??
Yes, it's sold separately. It's the 20" classic unit. I've got a playlist on the channel page about reel mowing with more details if you wanna check it out. Appreciate ya watching and commenting!
Thanks a lot you talked me out of getting one now!
Don't give up just yet. But you definitely wanna know some ins and outs before making a mistake. It's way different from rotary mowing for sure! Thanks for watching!👊
Have you still been enjoying your CT reel mower after 2 years? what part of the country are you in? what type grass are you reel mowing on ?
I’m in a new construction house so I haven’t used it this season until the lawn gets a little sand love. But I left off happy last season so that shouldn’t change. I’m in the northern part of Arkansas. Bermuda grass.
Can you mow without the self propelled power drive wheel engaged? If yes, how difficult is it to push without the drive wheel engaged?
On this mower, you can't. The drive wheel and reel are connected, so when one spins so does the other. But I can tell you, it's tough to push across the lawn without the drive wheel engaged. It's a heavy machine. You need a self propelled system to even use it. Appreciate the question!
Budget Lawns Can you still mow with the drive wheel up and just manually push around tight corners or flower beds?
@@chrissobczyk5539 no, the reel won't spin without the drive wheel engaged.
Called the co they weren’t sure offhand 🤦♂️
It’s about 23-24 inches at its widest point. Thanks so much.
I have about an acre and some of my yard stays very wet would you recommend this type of mower?
It'd take ya some time to mow an acre with it. If it stays really wet, I wouldn't recommend. It's heavy, so I wait until my lawn is dry so it doesn't rut it up in the soggy spots. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Budget Lawns it did thanks I just love watching the videos of powered reel mowers they just make the yard look so nice. If I keep up on the mowing that part of the yard doesn’t always seem to have as wet but yeah I’ll probably have to look into another potential replacement for my self propelled walk behind
To me, reel mowing is like flyfishing; Slow, methodical and very therapeutic.
Thanks for watching!
Can you hang it up in your garage?
No. It’s heavy.
Budget Lawns thanks for replying! One last question haha 😂. How easy or hard is it to sharpen the blade? If you have done it yet
You're welcome! I haven't done it yet. But it won't be hard at all. Pretty easy process. Thanks again.
Budget Lawns awesome! Thanks again! And thanks a lot for the video
What is the weight?
Not sure exactly. But I remember the freight slip said 250 when it was delivered.
@@BudgetLawns thanks, great content keep it coming!
You're welcome. You got it! Thank you!
Your lawn appears to be flat, but do you or anyone know how this mower would cut on hills? Not a severe hill, but a hill nonetheless.
I forgot to add...good work on the video. Most reel mower videos take the approach of the viewer having experience with these. I learned more in this one than all reel mower videos combined that I’ve seen.
As long as it isn't severe, it will cut just fine. Will be more of a challenge tho. Thanks for watching and your question.
Awesome. Thank you for that. I appreciate the feedback.
First....dang it!!! Beat out by 8 seconds!!!
Haha. That was so close! 👍🥈
@@BudgetLawns 😭
Now now, it's ok. haha. I like your commitment.
What HOC are you at ?
Just a pinch over an inch. With the season drawing to a close soon I won't go really low until next year.
It's a great mower!!
Let me tell you about grass. It's not going to happen over night. Mite be two years to get the lawn you want.
The grass your cutting is not the same with a rotary mower.
And I can tell you how to make it a mulching machine
Very solid advice. True words right there. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate ya!
how does it do in tall grass??????????????????????????????
I mow around an inch, so I can't attest to how well they work on tall grass. However, most folks use power reel mowers to mow low. For this model California Trimmer, the optimal cutting height is 1.25" and below, according to the owners manual. They have a high cut model that works better on taller grass, 1.25 and above. Hope this helps. Thanks for your question and watching.
@@BudgetLawns where did you buy it from and how much to they cost
Home Depot sells them. You can check out all their pricing there. Prices vary depending on model and engine.
@@BudgetLawns i got a honda 216 lawn mower with the rotarty stop or clutch on it does great in tall grass i hope you subcribe to my channel
Appreciate the feedback. Great to hear from someone with lots of experience. Thanks for watching!
First!
👊🥇
Can you get away with mowing twice a week with a reel mower? I've heard some folks are mowing every other day 🤔
Depends on your cutting height.
If you put it under regulation you can get away with less mowing even under 0.5". Tnex is what I use.
@@BudgetLawns That makes sense. Thanks for the info👍🏼
@@MrMadeinthe80s ah, I forgot about the growth regulator, you are right about that 👍🏼
@@LawnImprovement you bet, buddy!
There's no stripes. Why are you not striping? Always stripe. Always. Always.
@@BudgetLawns NO STRIPES??? Why do you have a reel mower??? Do patterns, something!
Reel mowers aren't for stripes. That's not why people buy them and reel mow. In fact, it's likely not even a reason why.
Anything with the word California in it, I just expect it to not work.....
Yeah, I feel ya. But one place politics don’t belong is in the lawn. This is a great machine fore sure. Appreciate ya watching.
Just watcher your DIET watering video. Makes sense. THX
Awesome. Appreciate you!
My Cali Trimmer supposed to be delivered in the AM. Excited and now broke.....and your parlay to blame...lol
Haha. Sorry bout that. You’ll thank me later. 😂😂😎😎 congrats on the new unit. Worth it for sure. 👊👊
