The way he makes sacrifices to survive the war does make him look like a good ruler (nothing could make him look like a good father though), but his flippant attitude towards prety much everything makes quite clear that whatever good decitions were made are entirely by accident. Tripped is the right word to descrive his actions.

Kevin wondering why the books were demanded.
Historically speaking, books were extremely valuable as they were hand written on parchment, taking a long time to write and bind. Usually the book covers were made of leather. All lot of them had illustrations. Pigments for these could be also very expensive, depending what colours were available and what you had to import. There are also a lot of books from the middle ages using gold for illustrations.
And as reading and writing was not taught at the same time (Charles the Great could read and tried some writing. But writing was mostly trying.) being able to write a book is a craft that only a few were capable of.
So all in all, that's why books were valuable.

This game's story is legitimately heart breaking when you pay attention to it. Even the "best" ending is quite sad.

Quite sad? Last hour of the game in my nearly 6 hours of playing had me sobbing almost all the time until the end. It's fucking sad yet fucking awesome

Right?😆 Being Kevin, im not sure if he genuily forgot about the details of the last playthought and thats why he does the exact same stuff, or he simply does it knowingly to cause the worst posible outcome. Either way, you can always trust him to not learn from his mistakes. Or to be more precise, considering he actually did manage to keep the people relatively content (or at least not too miserable) until the war this time around, we can trust Kevin to learn the bare minimun to survive while still making all the same mistakes. Thats the Kevin way.

I enjoy watching Kevin play games where you have to make choices that actually matter. He somehow manages to be simultaneously good at making *plot* decisions, but bad when it comes to financial ones. The recent Road 96 video is a prime example of this lol
reminds me of fable 3 where you're supposed to make hard decisions to get the money for your army at the end, but what actually happens is you pay it all out of pocket from your real estate empire.
Yep, unrestrained capitalism meant I had more money than god, and never had to make any of those hard decisions in that game. Loved it.

Can confirm that this is what players do, I chose all of the good guy options that were supposed to drain my funds to dust and result in everyone dying. Instead, I just payed for literally everything with the massive bank that comes with owning nearly every piece of property in the entirety of Albion 💀

I would be excited to see you continue this! I've gotten invested in this character that makes a lot of choices quite flippantly but somehow gets it right in the end.
I bought thr game when it came out and played different endings all because of Kevin's demo videeo, I still watch it cause it was hilarious "send the witch!" "Now your castle it's gonna be cover in feces!".

Yes your Grace was one of those games where I thought it would be lighthearted, funny and not that deep...And then the plot just hits you right in the guts.
At the start of the game, the daughters were just little pixel people that made cute noises when you click on them.
By the end I was in full dad mode over these little pixel girls.
