- I started this bog garden in April of 2018. I thought it would be fun to show you guys a consolidated video of the growth, from build to its first year and a half of growth. The garden is made in a Bradley Sink lined with pond liner, has a PVC lattice with a standpipe for watering and the substrate is 50/50 sand and peat. Its planted with a huge range of Sarracenia, Sundews, Venus Fly traps, orchids, and other flowering partner plants. Its capped with live sphagnum moss and is overwintered in place using burlap and pine litter. Its watered with collected rain water and so far has been an absolute success!

Plantaholic id love more plant content for sure! Are there any “nano” carnis?
@@KyIieMinogue tons of the sundews are a temperate species that stay small. Sarracenia purpurea is a petite pitcher plant as well
I am awaiting that update, it really looks amazing.
Question; are there any species from our region (I'm right below you in MD)?
@@deadfred821 Northern pitcher plant, Sarracenia purpurea is native to MD as well as Drosera brevifolia
Wouldn’t look forward to when you have to empty that thing out to refresh the soil.
This has to be a record. At time I’m commenting : 2 vids, 1.2k subs , 2 days . Awesome!
Thanks man! The support has been really heart warming!
I am looking forward to seeing the garden this spring. I'm thinking of using a plastic kid's pool to make a bog garden in this spring.
One video in and I'm already in love with this channel. That carnivorous garden is spectacular!
Thanks Daniel! I cannot wait to see how it looks this Spring!
Omg I read this as Coronavirus Container 😂
hahahah, that would be a vastly different experience
This is seriously the dream holy cow it’s gorgeous
I forgot how beautiful it has become.
I Love this bog garden, I live vicariously thru your videos as I have a very black thumb vs your green thumb. I've given up murdering plants so now I watch.
I love your Bog Garden 🥰🥰👍👈
the amount of knowledge she just unloaded *BOOM*.
Thanks man
I'm so glad this garden has taken off.
Me too! It could have been a total failure with how shallow it is!
@@Plantaholic Especially with the crazy rains PA has been getting. I was worried this garden would be torn apart.
@@ofthebeanvariety I think I was smart/lucky in the way I gapped the pond liner to allow for overflow
GARDEN GOALS!! Gosh, I love your carnivorous plants so much!
This is the first video I see from this channel and already subscribed.
I like how to-the-point this video is and you explain things really nicely
This video is AWESOME!!! I just found this video and absolutely LOVE the look of these planter bogs!! Thank you so much for the inspiration!! Just subscribed to your channel and can't wait to see how your bogs have matured since!! #EXCITED!!! ♥♥♥♥♥
Awesome idea. I'm thinking about making a big but above ground due to grass clippings etc. great job.
Spectacular display. Really nailed it
I love your bog gardens. This makes me want to get a bog garden in my yard. I need to do research for the North central part of Florida to see what plants would do well in this area and what is local. Thank you for the inspiration.
Your biggest obstacle may be the cool down needed but I know there are several species native toyour area
Please do more species spotlights. I watched your Venus fly trap one and really want some on the pitcher plants!! I'm also in Pennsylvania and want to get more into the carnivorous plants!!! Love your videos! Both on the Fish channel and here!
Thanks Liz! Just uploaded one about sundews :)
Beautiful 💕🌹💟👌🏻
Hi Rachel !! Nice bog set-up + tips!!! Thanks for sharing!! Oh, BTW.. LRB sent me here!! :)
I really hope my scarlet bells come back this spring. But regardless I can't wait for the upcoming new garden and tubbing season. I learned so much last year. Thank you for your help
Beautiful! I'm so pleased this new channel exists. Thanks for the content :)
I love the idea of how this garden, the looks are very amazing
That bog garden is absolutely fascinating! I am intrigued and am definitely wanting to do more in my yard in the coming years!
amazing plants 🌱
Love your voice! Nice video. Thanks.
I love your succulents, don't get me wrong I love the carnivorous guys too but I would love to see the succulents more just because they are more in my area of expertise. Keep up the great work, Mason.
Sure! They are still pretty dormant right now, as I work with mainly ones that work in my climate (sempervivum, sedums, etc). Stay tuned! Once that garden really wakes up, I will do a video, or maybe one of myt temperate succulent garden build up until now? What do you think?
Wow that is an awesome bog love it
I am so amazed at how fascinating I have found this garden to be - you have done such an outstanding job of creating and taking care of it! Looking forward to seeing it come out of hibernation this spring!
I love it. Really beautiful and amazing.
The plants look amazing :)
I have always enjoyed your plant videos. Glad to see you start another channel. LRB just gave you an awesome shout out!
oh yea? Where was that? I will have to thank him
Plantaholic on his channel he just put out a video this morning. Said to hi to you!
@@nrfishinman009 I went and watched and thanked him. What a nice guy!
Plantaholic Lucas is a the man!
You should get some companion bog plants, like cranberries, bog orchids, etc.
G'day great bog garden
This is a really fantastic set-up. I love the look of the containers, this really is a showstopper.
Super cool and creative
absolutely beautiful!
Looking great!
Love it! Beautiful

Beautiful
What an awesome project! Thanks for updating us on your progress! Totally beautiful!!!
So excited to see your new channel. Definitely looking forward to your summer projects. Cheers!
😍 wow
Been a big fan of this garden. Always looking good.
OMG. Saw the setup of this carnivorous garden and it was inspiring. Seeing it now I am amazed. You've exceeded my best expectations. The clip if when it was in flower was stunning. Love it.
I would love to learn more about these!
i have been hoping you would make a video about the bog garden! its always been one of my favorite parts of your channels!
If you ever have a chance to visit Atlanta Botanical Garden, they have an amazing outdoor carnivorous plant section right outside their orchid greenhouse.
Look forward to seeing how this develops this year!
Hope you come with a similar synopsis of the succulent garden - thinking of trying to do one on our garden.
I love carnivorous plants too! I want to get back into the hobby and I'm trying to successfully grow flytraps.
I'm a plantaholic too. I've had a carnivorous bog garden for 10 years. Love this channel, so glad you started it
I would love to see yours! If you have Instagram, tag me in a picture please! I am a relative newbie to CP's, as the bog is only 2 years old though I have been keeping them for about 6 or 7 years
@@Plantaholic had to have mt daughter show me how to do it.
lol that was from a few years ago all I have now is pics of the flowers
Wow!
Looking good. I remember using those kind of sinks at a shop i worked at.
Yes, these came from some industrial building being torn down
I remember when you created this garden. Such a great way to upcycle unordinary things!
You have og status! Thanks for sticking with me!
@@Plantaholic -- and thank you for the videos!
From what I saw last year with the Bog was exciting, can't wait either to see it this season to see how it's Grown!!
Hope you get that Aquascape pond you dream of too...
😊
I took out our swimming pool so have the perfect place for it
@@Plantaholic I have been dropping hints to Greg Whitstock, and even called the company to see what can be done, waiting for call back. Fingers crossed...You Definitely Deserve One!! Tanner got a nice one, but I think the one he built is much more awesome, maybe he can put a good word in for you as well. 👍
this is genuinely my favorite carnivorous planter I've seen. I remember when you set it up and I couldn't wait to see it at maturity. it's looking so good 😍 I'm so excited to see how it looks this summer!!
me too!!!!
Would definitely love to see a video specifically about the winterization of this bog garden. I have some carnivorous plants that I want to plant outdoors.
I have done a few on my main channel
I absolutely love this. I am getting ready to do my first bog garden... 😂😂🤣 well, if that's what you call it... it's only 3 plants, but I didn't want to get crazy on the cheeze whiz my first go round. I'm glad I found this just subbed!
WOW! Joey tells me to come check your new channel out, there are like 800 subs.... a few hours later and now you have 1,600!!! Killin it Rachel, keep up the great work, hope the Fam is doing well..
I had to follow you here as I am also a plantaholic (nowhere near recovering.) I'm fascinated by carnivorous plants, but don't have any yet. My big thing is cacti and succulents. How is your succulent garden doing? Do you have many indoor succulents?
❤❤❤
Fantastic video. Wish I could keep them outside in Pheonix.
I didn't realize you were in Phoenix. Maybe nepenthes or some trops would work for you
@@Plantaholic Moved here in 2018. Now I have a house and a grapefruit tree (wanted an orange tree). still working on reestablishing my fish room and finding plants I'll love to grow outside.
@@JeremyBolanos what are the humidity levels like?
@@Plantaholic Average is the 30's with it getting below 20 in the summer and around 40 in the winter. My bath towels dry very quickly.
This is a beautiful garden. I can't wait to learn more about them. I would love to do the here in the Chihuahuan Desert, but I think it is too dry and our water is liquid rock. So for now, I'll enjoy your beautiful bog garden. I can see that you have one edge of the industrial sink propped on top of the one in front of it. I know for a fact that those sinks are heavy. Can you explain how you have the back part of the higher sink secured at that height? Thank you!
I built a 2x4 frame.
@@Plantaholic great! Thanks!
This is one of my fav plant things you've done on your channel. Really hoping I get the chance to see it during the summer in person, if you'll have me again! Its progressed beautifully and you've done an amazing job caring for all the plants. I don't know if anyone asked, but do the flowers have any kind of fragrance to them??
I too wondered what any fragrance might be like.
No, not that I noticed.
That is very cool. Do you buy carnivorous plants anywhere particular or do they have the ones you wanted locally or whats that like?
I buy from a few spots, locally, but also from carnivorous plant nursery in md. There are lots of reputable vendors, but I tend to choose from my general climate for ordering
what kind of hot peppers are you going to grow this year? My uncle grows me Ghost Peppers every year and i want to start growing my own habaneros!
Looking fantastic. How cold does it get during winter in your area?
Usually 10f
I had some like that, the actual in the greenhouse broke and lost everything from the heat. That's what I get for going on vacation lol.
That is sad :(
Is that a Sarracenia Purpurea v. Venosa at 4:40? I have one that I brought inside for the winter as I wasn’t able to make a big garden this year and it actually flowered around Christmas 😲! My Drosera Spatulata is flowering as well right now. Trying to find a Sarracenia Purpurea v. Purpurea to add to my collection as they can get a LOT more purple and can survive very low temps. They can range into the Northern Territories of Canada.
it was purchased as just purpurea, but hasn't gotten really richly red yet
Plantaholic It is my understanding that the Venosa subspecies has a rough, kinda hairy/fuzzy outer pitcher whereas the Purpurea subspecies is more of a smooth, waxy outer pitcher. Either way, it is one of my favorite “ground-hugging” sarracenias.
That is so awesome, I don’t know about the other ones but have you tried removing the flower from the Venus flytrap to have it grow more? Or are they seeding as well?
I always remove them before they flower as vft are so easy to propagate from leaf pulls
Plantaholic ooh I see that is good to know, so you take leaf with trap attached and it propagates? Thx, I’ll have to try that sometime ^^
Have you ever tried propagating Drosera from leaf cuttings? All my attempts have failed
Yes, that would be a fun topic
Try looking for some videos - they are actually quite easy. They also produce many seeds and, in my garden, grow like weeds.
What grow zone are you in?
What zone are you in?
Ok it might be a silly question but I’ve looked and tried to research in my area how to measure and /or find out what the TDS is in my water. I have the standard aquarium test kit, but is there a TDS kit? Or do you know what govt office would have this information? I feel like it can’t be this difficult and there’s an obvious answer I’ve overlooked ?
I’m in NYC I believe it’s “soft water” and after moving up and down the east coast is definitely the best tasting water right out of the tap. Lol.
You have to buy a tds pen to measure it. Tds is not a static or consistent measurement that the municipality would be able to supply
Generally NYC is SUPER soft
Plantaholic thank you very much!😊
I’m starting a bog garden and am wondering how much water should be present all of the time. Should I be able to feel it being very boggy and wet at the surface?.
I plant live mosses in the surface- if they look dry, it needs more water. When i water i saturate it completely
@@Plantaholic Generally, it is not wise to have rhizomes soaking wet for extended periods of time, although there are a few exceptions. I bottom water mine like Plantaholic, but have overflows a couple of inches above the bottom to keep the water from remaining too deep if I over-water. The disadvantage is that I need to water every 2 or 3 days during the hot and dry season.
I have not put in drip irrigation, since even RO water is too expensive to waste when a person has thousands of plants.
I'm new to the carnivorous plant scene and have watered all of mine
I have a question Mini greenhouse 58 cm x 40 cm Drosera seeds 100 seeds (Mix)
1.) Should we feed them manually at some point? as the domes are closed in their seedling stage to maintain humidity, leaving no access for any insects to get in.
2._Should we open the dome every couple of days for them to get new air?
3.) I have been told that boiled and then cooled water is fine for Sundews. Can anyone confirm this?
4. ) Can I water the sundew filter
Gj
My township has some ordinances about collecting rain water. It’s kinda ridiculous in my opinion.
They may be concerned about all the toxic molds, algae and bacteria that can grown in rain water barrels. If you could demonstrate to the township that the water is for plants only, you might be able to get a waiver.
