Derek Riggs's artwork is second to none and i love his artwork especially with Iron Maiden over the years. I've been a massive fan of Derek since 1990 or 1991 when I first saw the cover of 'Somewhere in Time in the window of a T-shirt shop in the Square shopping center in Tallaght in Dublin. Since then I've amassed a huge vintage Derek Riggs Eddie collection. I have all the vinyl, rare Eddie's, very rare Eddie's classic Eddie calendars, misc vintage Eddie's, and of course all the classic Eddie Christmas cards from 1980 - 1998. I also have Derek's Run for the Cover book too. However, there are some Eddie's and other art that are not included such as Piece of Mind era decapitated Eddie Head, Piece of Mind Eddie in a graveyard (it is in there, but it's very small), mummy Eddie on top of a pyramid, Somewhere in Time Eddie on a blue hoverbike and Somewhere in Time Eddie fighting a samurai warrior up the skies and quite a few others. I think I have a few more to collect, but then that will it, apart from the Eddie's that Derek puts out from time to time.
Derek's artwork is INSANE!! Eddie is by far my favorite Metal Mascot & I spent many hrs drawing him back in High School, got pretty good at it too.. that was back in the 80's so I doubt it would look as good now. Wish Derek was drawing him during this interview, would have loved to have seen the Master at work.
For an Art Appreciation course in college, I did my final on Riggs' work. After being a fan of his covers and other paintings to seeing them from that different prospective, I have really come to understand just how special his work is. He is truly amazing and it's somewhat of a shame in that many of the stiffs in the art community can't see passed the Maiden aspect to examine how awesome his work is!

I love this interview with Derek. A very interesting fellow with a child like demeanor for 61, I love it! (at the time of the interview). He seems to be in a good place. He's one of my inspirations for the arts as a novice myself. I'd like to try to paint Eddie if he wouldn't mind. Great stuff!
Thank you! That means a lot. We have been friends with Derek for a few years now, and he is so funny, and interesting. He's a real delight to have a conversation with, but it made it a little awkward to ask him for an interview, but like a true gentleman, he obliged. We said it would be only 10 minutes, but once we got started, he seemed to be into it.
He seems like a really interesting person. A real character, with a lot of weird stories no doubt. It's funny to realise he's the guy who made the monster Eddie, I used to look at in awe when I was a kid. I remember staring at Iron Maiden LP covers at stores, being a bit scared but most of all intrigued. I took in all the details, and thought this is the coolest thing there is. A bit later on, I also got into the bands music too, and I've been a fan since. Talk about getting your merchandise, and marketing nailed!

It's interesting. A big part of Maiden's success was because of the artwork. I think they'd have to agree with that. Because one would listen to the album and hold the cover and look at it while the music played. It took an artist to realize the Eddie concept. It sounds simple. "Yes we'll just have Eddie doing a bunch of different things." But that's only because we already saw Riggs paint it. He deserves a lot more credit. Love the guy's laugh!

So yes, a Steve Precision. Dave Strat, Adrian Jackson. and some Nikko drum kit plus a ton of other recording widgets would be quite a nice gesture. I accept artists don't have quite the same royalty rights as recording musicians.
(This assumes he gets nothing from any merch bearing his artwork, he may have been offered a one time bung, like Paul)
@@brendanoneil3489 My comment about NWOBHM was regarding Riggs, its relevant to Maiden etc but nothing to do with his artwork or payment etc. I dont know, what is it about Maiden fans in regards to what? He lives in the US, when he started out and did his early stuff for Maiden he was living in a dingy flat in London, I would give an educated guess and say hes been able to live a decent lifestyle and had his artwork displayed all over the world and move to the US thanks to Maiden. So the dont owe him a drink, hes already had it and a lot more besides, thanks to them. He had the chance for royalties but walked away, he couldn't be bothered and that was his own words.
@@KP-viking88 Do you know what he got paid, and on what deal? educated guesses apart? what sort of value would you put on the DR art merch since he gave it away?
Not saying they didn't pay the man at the time, but rather like the Star Wars merch royalties/flat payment offer....when things go beyond anyone's wildest dreams that would seem incredible to anyone, sometime it isn't just contractual obligations...when he started on this 'relatively' unknown london metal act,pre killers album release no-one could envisage where they took it.
Maybe they could bung him some music gear and few T shirts even.
75 usd signed and numbered prints sounds cheap to me
Maiden's covers since they parted ways with Derek have been atrocious. Why don't they bring him back in?
Astonishing artist. Maiden lost great album covers with losing Derek
Jaysus what a sweet child Derek is, special with such terrible interviewer.
I am grateful for the interview thou 😅
Thanks?
After Derrick I quit buying 45 dollar t shirts at concerts fall apart after 3 washing, Eddie looks stupid, not meant to be a cartoon? I won't wear a iron maiden t he didn't create, he as much of band as the band, Derrick still big merch for iron maiden even my son air force all ways have iron maiden t ,sweet trooper, he like I only wear what Derrick created, yah, you and me both?
He’s alright despite his politics
I've spoken with him many times, and never heard him bring up politics.
Your interview technique sucks. Just dead end silences after the man speaks. No flowing conversation. Rubbish.
I appreciate your feedback. We are pretty new with this and maybe it's not super pro, we think some people enjoyed it. Have a good one!
Who cares? Derek speaking is enough. Great interview!! Cheers
Also fake commentary. Meet my attorney about our hours together qualifying.
Wierdism. Hahahahahahahahaha
Most interviewers either :
1. Demonstrate NO PRACTICAL or even theoretical KNOWLEDGE
of the subject
2. No ENTHUSIASM or INTEREST in anything SPECIFIC
Or....
3. No sense of the subjects relation to "BROADER perspective "
.....and would FAIL at presenting a proper 5th grade
BOOK REPORT !!!!
Thanks for watching and the kind feedback.
This interviewer is just awful
Not all videos can be as brilliant as yours.
@@MetalSwapMeet why not
When maiden lost derek, lost maiden soul....and band lost the metal way
lol...Derek rules but maiden is maiden no matter what is on the cover. up the irons!!
